How to iPod a new BMW

Read in the forums that BMW supply a Y shaped adapter for iPod use when you have BMW's Navigation system. The part number in the UK is 61 12 0 431 424, but be warned its £40 inc VAT, after you have paid for the Nav system (£1400 or £2000 depending on option) plus £205 for the USB connection and holder in the centre armrest.
Poor show, which I am about to take up with BMW. I'll let folks know how I get on. Anyone else managed to get this cable for free?

My wife has a one month old 120d mSport convertible. She specified the Navigation-system Professional with the USB interface under the arm rest and the official BMW iPod Adapter Cable when she ordered the car. In general, the ICE set up seems good, however, the iPod connection is extremely unreliable. My wife's iPod (Fifth Generation 60GB -- December 2005) Occasionally works. She will come home and tell me that the iPod didn't work today, or, sometimes, that it worked fine. There doesn't seem to be any pattern to it either working of failing to work (except that it fails to work most of the time). My iPod (classic 160GB -- late 2009) never works. When the iPod fails to work, the iDrive screen says that the USB is not connected. I've tried switching to an ordinary Apple iPod cable to see if we get anything with that, but that doesn't work either. Is it necessary to do something particular to either the iDrive system or the iPod to ensure it works? Nobody at the dealership seems to know how the system is supposed to work and I can't find any information about setting up or using an iPod with this particular system from BMW.
Any help would be very welcome.

Sounds like the usb port is faulty but don't discount the y-cable.
There is no real set-up to them it's really plug and play but you could try the usb in the glove box??

You might consider connecting it to the charger and charging up the battery overnight.

The sync is one way - computer to ipod. The exception is itunes purchases: File>Devices>Transfer Purchases

Since you have the old SIM, you will not need to use anything out of the 4S. It should activate just fine with the old SIM after you wipe the phone and then restore it.

If you connect your ipod to your computer then look in the hidden folder labeled "iPod_Control" . (This is on a Mac version, but i think it's the same for Windows) and in "Music" is all your music mixed up in different folders. Just drag the MUSIC folder onto itunes then BAM! It's done ;D

The 4G/iOS 6 does not have an Activation Lock. That started with iOS 7.
Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.
If recovery mode does not work try DFU mode.
