How to: IT Virtualization career with VMware as rock-solid foundation

Hello all,
I'm considering exactly what the title says. I've spent the better part of the past month reading/watching about the topic. I mainly researched the VMware product line (really, an ecosystem), along with Certification paths. I'm leaning towards the main DCV dish, with a side of CMA as needs come by. I am now building some sort of 'plan' for myself, contemplating the next 2-5 years or so with a VCP6-DCV goal in mind. There are a number of questions I need to ask to the actual pros, though. (highlighted in bold for anyone wishing to skip the following wall of text)
First of all, I'm heavily questionning my background. I wish it were enough to dive deep into vSphere right now, but is it? I mean, beyond VCA... I like to think "I can do this, I'm good admin material, I know it", but would an employer see it through the same lens? Probably not. My question is, would you hire ─ at the bottom of the IT/VMware ladder of course ─ this individual? Here's a quick, honest-to-god profile (please skip if you wish as none of this italic part speaks of VMware).
I'm 32, male, I live in France (but plan to move abroad to a more dynamic region, in terms of technology and the economy in general).
My 'official' pro background in IT is fairly limited ─ back in 2005 I trained & worked (at the same time) for about a year and a half on general admin/network. So, mostly windows 2000-2003-XP, general IT concepts; we had an HQ with about 30 users and 30 distant sites (car rental company present all over Paris), everything VNC'ed to the server room which hosted a dozen Dell Edge something (distant profiles etc.). Applications such as MS Office or credit card payments (Wynid) were served virtually through Citrix, and I had the opportunity to even run it at home in my lab to learn. It was back in 2005, but the basic concepts of networking, directory management or virtualization seem pretty clear to me, even as of 2015.
At that time I was young. Well, younger, at least. When I realized that what needed fixing weren't really the computers but the users (j/k... or am I?), I cut short my IT experience and did other, unrelated jobs, even spending some time back at the university to learn law and a bit of sociology (political theory, social interactions, things like that). Enriching, and I can use all of this to fuel my vision of technology, but now I want back in IT as a professional. It's an obvious vocation I've been ignoring for too long.
Ever since my teens, I've been dabbling in computers.
Learned Dreaweaver 3 with a bible in just over 3 months and made my first website back in 2000.
Since 2005 I've always had a windows server at home ─ it seems like it's not really my home unless it's a domain. I've been sharing coffee daily with ADDS ever since.
I like starting from scratch, designing and building entirely new IT systems (my home is my lab) every other year.
All my hobbies, at some point, got "computerized". For instance I learned everything I could about metadata for media/content files, from the Dublin Core principles to real-world popular DBs schemas (MusicBrainz notably) passing by actual implementations on my system, just because I need my music and video files to be properly sorted and browsed "smartly", you know... Also built a few home audio/video studios setups for friends...
Many people around me come to me for advice on technology, of any kind ─ I like science and tech, always reading up the latest and greatest, and apparently able to research what I have yet to know. I get good feedback on my advice, more often than not.
These are just a few examples of a trend in my life that says "I don't work in IT, but on a daily basis I spend a few hours, often having actual fun, with geeky-IT tasks, even just reading".
I'm extremely thorough by nature. Reading and carefully understanding, checking and applying a Best Practices whitepaper is often a paradoxical treat to me ─ it may be somewhat boring come page 14, but it's just beautiful when a system runs close to perfection, I often find a deep motivation for these ironing-out/optimization tasks. I'm also very practical, down to earth. I love ideas, I get my good share of it, but ultimately what matters to me are actual results ─ though I never rush things unless I have to, I'm infinitely patient with a project. I spend hours designing, testing (seeking real-world proofs-of-concept) so I don't mess up in actual production. I like things neat, sober and efficient, from variables to comments and names passing by external documentation ─ which I highly value, probably stems from my research-oriented mind. I do document my home setups to some degree!
Do these things matter? Do they help me, along with these certifications, or is my professional IT inexperience, at 32, the end of that road?
From what I've read, I'm fairly confident that with the right self-traning, hands on, I have a shot at VCA6-DCV. Practical questions:
I can get a good book, I can get online training, I probably can build a decent lab for virtualization at home. But how can I get hands-on with the software?
Evaluation doesn't seem like an option since it's limited in time.
Unless, maybe, one can get several trials as long as everything is freshly reinstalled. Being a lab we obviously don't care to break everything every 60 days or so, but does it work like this with VMware trials?
Is there any way I can run a non-productive fully-featured VMware ecosystem at home, just for the sake of training? (note: I'm willing to pay for that right, just can't or rather won't afford $2000 licences of course, I'd rather spend that on training classes)
I've discovered the fabulous VMware Hands-on Lab.
Is it really free, unlimited?
If yes, I suppose that's the recommended way to get hands-on VMware products?
Should it be the only way, how can I verify that my practices are good in the long run (days, months, years...) if I can't run the systems for more than a few hours? My understanding of IT is that making things work at first is only the prologue to a long day-to-day care and management of systems and apps, and I wouldn't want to miss that kind of understanding with mission-critical infrastructure such as virtualization. Seems like the mother of all critical-to-monitor and analyze/report/optimize etc. That doesn't happen in a few hours. I find myself puzzled by that apparent contradiction between training and real work.
Now, let's assume I pass my VCA6. Then what? How do I go from there to VCPx?
With my rather unconventional background, as seen from IT, can I land a level 1 vmware admin job if I get a VCA6-DCV? (I'm doubting, thus also considering maybe VCA6-CMA as well, to demonstrate *more* motivation and skills). I mean, are these VCA's even remotely enough, or should I brush up, say, on my Windows server/system admin and get a basic certification there before I aim at VCPx VMware certifs?
Assuming I manage, eventually, to have a job involving VMware datacenter products (ESXi cluster, vSphere, vCenter etc.), I understand that 2-5 years worth of pro experience are recommended to consider VCP-DCV. I assume a motivated individual, training at home on top of work, getting involved socially with the community and so on, would probably fall in the lower end of that range. From your experience, is being hands-on at work 'enough' to truly understand and master (read: work skillfully with) VMware products? (again, with VCP in sight) I'm asking since, more often that not, you don't touch critical settings, unless you absolutely have to, in a prod environment (for instance, if my company, back in 2005, hadn't allowed me to run citrix at home for a few months for training's sake, I just wouldn't have gotten my hands dirty enough with it to be able to administer it, later on this job). Which leads us back to my previous questions about hands-on in a lab environment. Which lab, where, and how?
And importanly enough, about how much would it cost me, overall, from VCA to VCP, including one mandatory class, and the necessary long-term hands-on training?
Sorry for such a long post but I wanted to hear back from the community with enough understanding of my situation. Please be frank and don't hold back, I need to hear the truth about my chances at this, and the sooner I realize how to proceed, the better. Currently, I'm beginning to train on ESXi and vCenter Server (awesome products, btw!) Any help in reaching my VCP endgame will be greatly appreciated, so thank you in advance for any light you might shed on my path.
PS: I apologize for any english mistake, it's not my mother tongue.

Thank you very much for your answer.
I think I do hear you. Assuming I can clear that first step you suggest (get a job supporting a company IT infrastructure, probably at the desktop), then I need to ramp up towards servers and eventually, it's somehow up to me to either help bring VMware to that company, or join another one where VMware is already present. And, as usual in business, ROI/TOC is the sinews of war. I suppose VMware, as a global IT leader, is somehow built on that premise. All of this makes a lot of sense to me. I think it will help me when making future choices. Very practical ideas are already popping up in my head.
I think, for now, I'll focus on
getting that first job in IT infrastructure,
while training for my VCA at home.
Then see from there. Regardless of my job, I can probably keep on self-training towards VCP ─ it never hurts to learn, and ultimately it may help me make the best out of a required class  training.
Just a follow-up question, specifically about VMware and security. I'm digging this way because, thinking of your suggestions, here's one aspect of IT in particular that seems a very good bet to me. Here's the context in France (and several european countries):
Studies show that small and medium-sized french businesses (SMBs, up to 250 employees) have mostly missed the digital revolution of the last decade or so. The root causes go deep, as there are about 100,000 IT jobs available in France because of a lack of skilled workers, and the general population shows very poor technological culture overall. Thus, there's a lot to do in the backend to ease that necessary transition (cue for newcomers like me, willing to enter this market, I suppose).
More specifically, there is a huge need for security, which is, too often here, nowhere near acceptable standards. It would be easy to blame IT departments, but they in turn blame their CEOs for not understanding the issue ─ whose main reasons for negliging security are often misconstrued or outdated perceptions: increased cost, tediousness of the end-user experience; but more often than not, it's just blatant unawareness of the risks.
I think VMware delivers very good solutions to this issue.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I understand that virtualization brings a layer of abstraction that makes it inherently superior, from a security perspective, to physical equivalents. And I think it's obvious the end-user experience, should it be different, is better virtualized than not. Therefore ─ you see where I'm going with this: if I had to show a company how VMware is interesting, not only for saving costs or ease of management/deployment, but above all in terms of security, what would be the main selling points, specifically? Also when training myself, which products, which specific designs or implementations or features, in the vast VMware ecosystem, are key to security if I want to bring that to my company? I'd like to have my eyes on that from the beginning. Basically knowing what to say when, one fine day, a manager/recruiter asks me: "how would using VMware be better for our security?" or "how will sponsoring you for VCP-DCV help us in this regard"? (again, rather from a small or medium-sized business perspective)
I'm thinking SSO, vShield and vSECR from the top of my head, but I confess the whole set of VMware server products and features is still a bit overwhelming to me. Obviously I'll do the bulk of research myself, I just need a few pointers.
Thanks again for the inspiration and support!

  • How to install ABAP trial with VMware on Windows XP

I installed ABAP on my computer, but since the computer name is too long and I cannot shorten it, I am looking to install VMware and then install ABAP trial. I have uninstalled all previous SAP components.
Regarding VMware I found this link http://www.vmware.com/download/  but cannot figure out what to download from here. Do I install both server and player? Also after I install VMware how do I install ABAP in this VMware?

    Monica;
The site you have for the VMware is correct. I currently have v1.0.5 of the VMware installed on my taplet and windows 2003 server as its OS where I installed the NW7 Trial version ABAP.
Step 1 - install the VMware (Make sure you allocate enough space. I did mine for 40GB)
Step2 - install OS on the VMware
    Step3 - install Netweaver 7 ABAP trial
    Good luck.

  • How can I virtualize Lion if I bought a new Mac with Lion preinstalled?

Hi folks. I read that you were allowed to virtualize 1 instance of Lion after purchasing Lion.  How can I virtualize Lion if I don't have any install media with one of the new macs?

If you bought on of the new MacBook Airs or Mac Minis, you will have a short term problem as the you will not be able to download a fresh copy of the Installer. See my post here.
This problem should go away soon probably with 10.7.1
If onthe other hand you bought one of the oleder models and it came with Lion, then you can download another copy of the installer by:
    Open the App store.
Hold down the option key while selecting "purchased"
Lion should now say "Install" rather than "Installed".
Click install to download a new copy of the Installer.
As soona s th installer automoatically opens after doqnloading, quit it
Save a copy of the installer from Applications.

  • Okay my phone was working just fine and I locked it and went to unlock it and now it just sits on the black screen it wont even show the lock screen I dont know what to do but I am very careful with my phone anyone know how to fix it? Plz and thank you!

Okay my phone was working just fine and I went to unlock it and it wont show the lock screen it just remains black please if anyone can help me fix it it will be much appreciated, I am very careful with my phone so I dont know why its acting like this.

I'm glad to hear that they replaced your phone. Any experience I have had with Apple customer service and/or Genius bar has been extremely positive. While I have had positive outcomes from trouble with other phones in the past, they are not as quick and  friendly. I had a Motorola phone and a Samsung phone go bad several years ago and warranty work through AT&T required that I wait for a replacement unit and then mail back the original unit to keep from being charged for the device. This usually meant almost a week without a phone. Nice to walk into Apple and walk out with a replacement device. Enjoy your phone.

Well, Forms and Reports are still core skills to have.
Oracle JDeveloper and Oracle ADF are the core tool/framework used for our future business applications (Fusion) as well as being at the core of our tools like WebCenter, BPM, EM etc etc. So that might be a smart option of you want to do something new which will be a core Oracle skill. The book I wrote on this might be of use. Google for "Quick Start Guide to Fusion Development Oracle JDeveloper Oracle ADF".

  • Hardware with VMware requirment

    Hi alls
i am new in RAC and want to know something very begginers question.
I want to mock up RAC implemtnation within my PC with vmware.
Which VM ware server would be sutiable if
I have OS RHEL 5 for two node machine?
    I have standard edition 11g rel 1?
what hardware requirment i would be need in terms of RAM,processor speed, hard disk space etc using VMware.
    Thanks

The latest VMware server release should do. RH 5 was supported starting with VMware server 2. Any software that can run on RH 5 will work. The virtualization layer in your case happens between the Windows OS and the VM OS. Any software that can run on RH5 will be able to run on the VM. It's transparent that it's a VM. VMware Server has a lot of overhead because it's a virtualization layer between the OS running on the hardware and the VM (BTW, VMware ESX server, it's enterprise solution can run bare bones). I think that you should go with at least 3 GB of RAM considering that you'll probably have a small database for testing purposes (and I wouldn't go with more than 2 instances). Think about how many layers and how much you'll be running. Expect it to be very slow. You should go with a quad CPU since the PC will be doing a lot of multi-tasking and you'll probably want the faster CPUs as well. I'm not sure what you're planning on doing with the database but the standard Hard drive size should be sufficient enough for everything, but you'll have a lot of IO overhead, so get the top of the line harddrive.

  • Can I use boot camp or other virtualization software with Snow Leopard Server?

Can I use boot camp or other virtualization software with Snow Leopard Server?

Boot Camp is not virtualization; it boots Windows natively on the Mac hardware. So Boot Camp would be irrelevant to running Snow Leopard Server. Parallels and VMWare Fusion both have at least "experimental" support for running Snow Leopard Server in a virtual machine on Mac OS X, though I don't know how robust it is as of this time. You might ask for opinions on the Parallels or VMWare forums.

    Hello
Simple problem - don,t know how to solve it.
With Premiere CC when I try to do a selection (click... drag... release the click) very often it stop way before the end of the move I'm swinging the Magic Mouse. I taught that the mouse clicking was defective and went to get a new Magic Mouse after lots of frustration. Today, I have an edit to do it it does the SAME thing !!
    I was like ????#$%?&*(???
Opened all the lights and taught I've trow the new mouse to the garbage and was using the defective mouse again... no !! - ??
Actually, the bran new mouse is doing the same thing. What I understand after investigating on the motion and watching carefully my fingers !! -  is that when I click I have to keep my finger at the EXACT same place on the mouse... drag and release and it's fine. If I click by pushing on the mouse and my finder is moving of a 1/32th of a millimeter, it will release and my selection will be to redo. You can understand my frustration ! - 75$ later... same problem, but I know that if I click with about 5 pounds of pressure and trying to pass my finger through the plastic of the mouse, it you stay steady and make it !
The problem is that scrolling is enable while clicking and it bugs.
    How to disable it ??
Simple question - can't find the answer !

    Helllooo !?
sorry but the Magic Mouse is just useless with the new Adobe Premiere CC and since I'm not the only one but can't find answer this is really disappointing. This mouse is just fantastic and now I have to swap from a USB mouse to the Magic Mouse every times I do some editing. My USB mouse if hurting my hand somehow and I want to got back to the Magic Mouse asap. Please - for sure there is a simple solution !
    Thanks !!

Oracle 10g is obsolete.  Oracle 11g is already at terminal release.
Have you installed the Oracle rdbms software?

If you are going to be a professional DBA, you need to learn to
    1) read the documentation
    2) wean yourself from dependence on pictures and GUIs.
    3) read the documentation
    =================================================
Learning how to look things up in the documentation is time well spent investing in your career.  To that end, you should drop everything else you are doing and do the following:
    Go to  docs.oracle.com.
Locate the link for your Oracle product and version, and click on it.
You are now at the entire documentation set for your selected Oracle product and version.
    BOOKMARK THAT LOCATION
Spend a few minutes just getting familiar with what is available here. Take special note of the "books" and "search" tabs. Under the "books" tab (for 10.x) or the "Master Book List" link (for 11.x) you will find the complete documentation library.
Spend a few minutes just getting familiar with what kind of documentation is available there by simply browsing the titles under the "Books" tab.
Open the Reference Manual and spend a few minutes looking through the table of contents to get familiar with what kind of information is available there.
Do the same with the SQL Reference Manual.
Do the same with the Utilities manual.
You don't have to read the above in depth.  They are reference manuals.  Just get familiar with what is there to be referenced. Ninety percent of the questions asked on this forum can be answered in less than 5 minutes by simply searching one of the above manuals.
Then set yourself a plan to dig deeper.
    - *Read a chapter a day from the Concepts Manual*.
    - Take a look in your alert log.  One of the first things listed at startup is the initialization parms with non-default values. Read up on each one of them (listed in your alert log) in the Reference Manual.
    - Take a look at your listener.ora, tnsnames.ora, and sqlnet.ora files. Go to the Network Administrators manual and read up on everything you see in those files.
    - *When you have finished reading the Concepts Manual, do it again*.

  • UCCX Advanced Quality Management with VMware View

    Hi,
I have a customer who uses UCCX 8.5 with VMware View clients running CAD and 7940 IP phones.
They are looking at recording options and have expressed an interest in the Advanced Quality Management product.
There are a few issues that I would need to consider specific to their environment.
The first is that Desktop based recording would not work in this environment as CAD is running on a virtual desktop rather than a PC daisy chained to the IP phone. The second is that network based recording is not supported as the 7940 phones do not have a Built in Bridge.
This leaves server based recording which uses SPAN port mirroring. The issue with this is that the agents phones are distributed across multiple Catalyst switches so I guess I would need to configure RSPAN - has anyone got any experience of using Cisco QM with RSPAN? - if yes how well did it work? - the customer would probably be willing to upgrade the IP phones used by the agents if that would be a better option.
The final query relates to the Screen Recording Client - the install guide details how to install this on a Citrix server but makes n mention of VMware view. Does anyone know if support for this is on the roadmap?
    Thanks!

    Hi James
I've done an RSPAN deployment with UCCX recording which I presume will have similar gotchas...
The only issue I had was that I ham fisted an RSPAN config in that SPANned the VVLAN on all the edge switches. My mistake was that I didn't exclude the uplink ports, and these switches were stacked, so there was a lot of packet duplication initially (sounds like 90s dance music time stretching).
If you ensure you SPAN ingress only on all the endpoints (i.e. phones, and gateways) and then exclude any ports where traffic might be seen a second time (e.g. switch uplinks), and then filter for the voice VLAN  you should be OK.
This deployment was a routed LAN with different subnets on each edge stack but this worked OK with everything running through a single RSPAN session back to the server.
I've not had the good fortune to have to do this more than a couple of times, and I've not done it for AQM  - but assuming that SPAN/RSPAN are supported along with the video recording part running on the endpoints I don't see it being too different as they seem to be written by the same people.
Can't help re: VMware view either I'm afraid...

  • Transferred my Library to new laptop, but how to associate/sync iPhone with new laptop?

I got a new laptop. The old laptop is still working. I transferred my library using the Home Sharing method and all of my items were moved except my apps. I plugged in my iPhone to the new computer and used "Transfer Purchases from iPhone" option and all of my apps were added to the library. But, now I don't know how to associate the iPhone with the new computer. When I plug in my iPhone to the new computer. It starts to sync. It says steps 1 through 3, spins for 20 seconds and says complete, but nothing was done. I do not get the "this iPhone is associated with another library" message when I plug it in to new computer, perhaps because I've authorized both computers. All I can find in my searches is how to avoid losing all of your data and how to transfer your library, but none has dealt with this exact situation. I am stumped as to how to get iPhone associated with new computer. Can I transfer my backup from the old computer and restore from backup? Other thoughts? Sorry if the answer is somewhere (I'm sure it is), but I have spent two days looking.

Randers4, so I carefully followed the directions (only one that confused me was about adding a fake address/calendar entry, is that for Macs, I'm using a PC?.)  I restored it from the backup and everything looked good. I had hope, the final step says to sync it and when I did, I had the exact same problem. It spun, went quickly through only 3 steps (even though there were 7 sync steps with my old laptop) and nothing changed. It clearly didn't sync.
So, I had an idea that I would back up everything by right clicking in the left pane and forcing a back up on the new computer, and then erasing the entire phone and then restoring from the backup I just made to see if that would make a difference. So, after I tried that and it restored, it was weird. All of my settings were there. Some folders were there, my pictures were there, but all of my apps, folders, music and video was missing and it still wouldn't sync. So, then I had to plug it back into my old laptop and do a restore from there to get that stuff back.
Shouldn't I get a message when I plug the iPhone into the new laptop saying this phone is connected to another computer? I tried "Reset Warning Messages" but it doesn't do anything. At this point, I don't care if I lose some of the stuff from my iPhone (texts, etc)...but I want it to sync to the new computer because my old laptop is on its death bed.
So frustrating, all of my iTunes content is on the new computer, the only piece that is missing is getting it to "talk" to the iPhone. Times like this I wish I wasn't a poor teacher and could afford to get a nice Mac laptop.

  • Problem installing Free BSD 64-bit with VMware Player on Thinkpad W510

I installed VM Ware Player on the latest Thinkpad W510 with a 2.66ghz Intel processor. I am getting an error message indicating that the CPU doesn't support long mode. I was advised by the freenode #freeBSD channel that long mode is x86_64/amd64/emt64. This same channel also suggested that I tell vmware it was a 64bit guest. But I don't know how to do this. How do I do this? VMware Player didn't offer me any user options during the install. Is this something I should setup in the bios of the Thinkpad? Or something else? Is there more than one version of the VMware pLayer?

Look on BIOS if VT is enabled.

Monitoring WebLogic J2EE on VMware with VMware vCenter Operations
The Blue Medora vC Ops Management Pack for Oracle OEM was updated in early May (2014) to include enhanced support for Oracle WebLogic J2EE integration. All of the Oracle EM target types for WebLogic related components including WebLogic Server, J2EE Application Deployments, Oracle HTTP Server, as well as WebLogic Cluster are now available to be ingested into VMware vC Ops Enterprise Edition.
With the data available within these new vC Ops 'Resource Kinds', you have the ability to create WebLogic on VMware relationship views, WebLogic on VMware mashup dashboards, as well as leverage vC Ops anomaly detection and predictive analytics on your WebLogic J2EE landscape. Below are a number of example dashboards that were easily created using the WebLogic data available within the Management Pack.
The first dashboard, the WebLogic on VMware Relationship View -- helps you visualize your WebLogic environment running on VMware all the way down to the VMware VM, ESX, and even Datastore level.   This can useful for diagnosing critical J2EE applications running within the vSphere environment -- allowing you to quickly discern whether a problem exists in the Oracle WebLogic layer or one of the VMware virtualization layers.

I succeeded to complete first 6 steps but from step 7 , author guided me to continue in Visual Administrator and choose <SID>/Server<#>/Services/Security Provider
    - Under Component, choose Ticket.
    - Choose the Authentication tab page.
    - Change the options for com.sap.security.core.server.jaas.EvaluateTicketLoginModule and enter the following values:
    like
    trustedsys<Number>=<BW_SID>, <BW_CLIENT> (for example, BWP, 000)
    u2022
    trustediss<Number>=<ISSUER_DISTINGUISHED_NAME> (z. B. CN= BWP, OU=SAP Web AS, O=SAP Trust Community, C=DE)
    u2022
