How to just audio chat??

Hi! So i want to just audio chat with someone. I have enable audio chat clicked, but when i click the facetime icon in top right it opens facetime and i cant turn my camera off. I think im just missing some obvious thing. Any help!?!

HI,
As I thought I had made clear the answer is dependant on the type of Buddy or contact and is therefore a Yes and No answer.
Buddies are a Yes
Contacts (iMessage connections) will invoke FaceTime  and that being Video Only means a  No.
Depending only your Apple ID and how you are contacting the other person you maybe able to use your Apple ID  to use the AIM side of Messages beta
Lets say the other person is using an Apple ID ending in either @mac.com or @me.com
Lets say you also have a Apple ID like this (one or the other)
This means you can create a AIM buddy list (On the basis it Logs in to AIM) and you can add your Buddy.
The Password does need to be 16 characters or Less (AIM Server limit).
To be clear.
Some Apple ID issued by Apple are in fact Apple ID and AIM valid Screen Names.
This means in Messages Beta they can be the iMessage contact ID and you can set them up in the iChat Menu > Preferences > Accounts as a AIM screen name as well.

  • How much bandwidth does iChat audio chat use?

I have a friend who has a broadband connection via a 3G/Edge cell phone connection in Europe. She has to pay for bandwidth in chunks of 500mb. Anyone have any idea how much bandwidth audio chat uses on an hourly basis.

It's complicated by how much data you can send in Video with Audio or Audio only or text chat and by what rate then can accept it.
iChat normally sends Audio chats at about 25kbps up to about 48kbps
After that is a question of ding the math.
This will give the rate that is th Max. What you will not know is how much of that is actually data measured as Download over the service.

  • How do i do an audio chat with Googletalk users on iChat?

I just got Tiger OS with the new iChat and I was expecting to be able to do an audio chat with my friends who have Googletalk on their PCs. Unfortunately, the audio chat option is greyed out next to all of their names on my buddy list and I can only type chat with them. How do I fix this?
FYI, I already looked at some of the other posts and at the googletalk website, and I am already using a jabber account with the server as talk.google.com, my gmail ID, and the port set at 5223 as directed. My computer does have a built in microphone. What am i missing?

  • IChat audio chat downloads how many MB?

    Hi,
Just like how when we visit a web page, whenever we do a video chat, there is data downloaded (MB downloaded) right?
However, if I da an audio chat via iChat with an AIM user, in different countris, is there 'data' downloaded?
I kinda need to know this as the hall I'll be staying in charges the internet per MB downloaded.
    THANKEW!

During a Chat open the Connection Doctor.
This will tell you the Bit rate per second.
IF you have System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming set to the recommended 1.5Mbps this is the max that iChat could achieve.
Having said that I have never seen it achieve over 1Mbps.
It is a question of what is the max download you can have and what do you achieve on average and doing the math.
I chat most days and on some days to certain Buddies for Up to two hours
Only once in four years have I exceeded 15Gb download per month but also required my son to play On-line games with his X-Box 360
We have two Macs, two 360's, 4 PCs of various sorts that spend different amounts of time On-line.
    That is doing Video chats.
Audio only chats come in at about 30kbps as a max each chat.
Screen Sharing seems to be just under 50kbps.

  • How to do audio only chat?

I see under the Video menu there is an "Audio Chat Enabled". I usually prefer to do audio only chats rather than video. How to start an audio only chat?
    Thanks,
    Tony

Well, I really want to use it with my family. My son has Skype and he has it always running. My wife uses iMessages only. I like how iMessages is integrated with iOS--the program doesn't have to be running. With Skype, you have to make sure it is in the background.
Neither of them (and not of my friends) use any of the other Chat programs.

  • How do I re-capture just audio from already logged clips?

Got a bin full of clips ( I've already dumped the media) that the client just wants one channel of the 2 audio, (no video) re-captured.
Is there a way to modify and batch capture so no video is re-captured. Just audio?
    Thanks,
    p2

select all the offline clips in the browser and then choose Modify > Clip Settings...
in that window you can turn on and off or otherwise modify the video and/or audio settings
if, when you chose the modify clip settings option, you get an error message saying "No items have files which are applicable to this operation" its because you have deleted the master clips media but not actually made the master clip "offline" ... you can easily fix this by first selecting all the offline media and choosing Modify > Make Offline... (Shift D)
    cheers

    Binary Images Description for "iChat":

    Hi,
The log points to the ports going all over the place and some ports are not even iChat ones.
This would normally be caused by going though tow routing devices.
How and through what and how many methods are you connected to the internet ?

  • Can't start Screen Sharing, Video Chat, or Audio Chat

    Hi there,
I've been through countless Apple Discussion and other website threads, but I can't figure this out.
I just got my dad a brand-new iMac with Mountain Lion 10.8.3 on it. I'm using a MacBook Pro, also with 10.8.3 on it. We're both using the Messages app, signed into our respective Google Talk accounts (not Apple IDs with Google email addresses).
But for the both of us, "Invite to Video Chat," "Invite to Audio Chat," and "Share Screen With..." are grayed out in the Buddies menu, even though both of us have "Video Chat Enabled," "Audio Chat Enabled," and "Screen Sharing Enabled" checked off. I unchecked the option to consolidate the various Buddy Lists in the Messages > Preferences > General pane, and when I go to my Gmail account's Buddy List, I see the four buttons underneath the list (with my dad's name highlighted), but only the "A" button is clickable--not the other buttons for Audio (the phone icon), Video (the camera icon), or Screen Sharing (the two rectangles layered over one another icon).
Does anyone have any ideas on how to remedy this (short of using a completely different method of screen sharing)?

    HI,
On your GoogleMail Page pull down your own Name/ID
    Click Account
    Choose "Products" from Menu.
Enable "Talk" (Sign in to Dashboard far right)
This is separate from the settings to actions on the Web Mail Page accessed in the Settings icon.
However I am not sure if the setting absent there if TALK has not been enabled as it was done some time ago for for me as well.
Jabber apps can have  Priority Setting to allow people to be logged in via several devices and be sure a messages goes to the right device at the time.
iChat version 3 through 5 had the same Priority as the Web Browser login and would stop text Messages getting through.
iChat would show the Buddy still on line if they were logged in via the web page at a later stage
but the Video and Audio green icons would disappear from the Buddy List and the icons at the bottom would be greyed out.
Messages has a default priority of 0 compared to iChat's 23.
However I have never managed to work out which end of the scale outranks the other.
Essentially logging in to Google Mail web page to Check things is likely to stop the ability to Video chat.
This is because Jabber app use a Protocol  called Jingle to connect and this is not compatible with the SIP iChat and Messages uses.
It is included in the Web Browser Plug-in you can get from Google.
The default setting for the Bandwidth setting is the NONE one.
However it can pay to set it to 500kbps.
This helps when  internet speeds that are faster vary too much for the Buffering in iChat and Messages to work.
In broad terms a 5% variance in a 10Mbps download speed can be 500kbps.
Forcing Message to only use 500kbps is fast enough for 4 way video chats but is well below any variance interference.
It can also help where the ISP slows the connection as it thinks it is a Peer-to-Peer file sharing event.
Video and Audio chats (including Screen Sharing) are peer-to-Peer connections.

  • Audio chatting with only one person

friends i run the cocomo example folder audio application. it runs successfully
    but this has following thins.
sdk  audio example uses an audio publisher and subscriber.
        * All users other than the person running the demo can hear the published audio.(important)
        * The example also shows to change various audio settings such as gain, silenceLevel,
        * echoSuppression, and so on using AudioPublisher properties.
        * These settings pertain to the audio publisher and do not affect the settings of other
        * audio subscribers.
    my needs:
roster displays that who are all the users avails in room. Just i have to select the particular person and i have to make audio chatting. it is not puplished to others in the room.
suppose in room 5 members are there means. audio should be published to only one selected person. how to do it. if you know the coding part. please send to me. it is very urgent.

    Hey Karthick,
Like chat you cant publish Audio just to a certain user. One approach would be using groupName. So try exploring groupName concept in the AudioPublisher. The publisher and subscriber can have the same groupName and this would enable them to have a private conversation.
    Thanks

  • Getting "refused connection" message; can't video or audio chat

I have searched and read posts on this forum but I am somewhat at a loss, perhaps due to my lack of sophistication on these issues. Here are the facts:
My son is living in Belgium this summer, and we had hoped to iChat with him using audio and video. He has a 15" PowerBook G4 running 10.4.6 and iChat 3.14, and an external iSight.
This computer, behind an AirPort Express Base Station, worked well all year for video iChatting at college (USA).
He now has the same computer (firewall off), the same AirPort Express Base Station in his Belgian apartment. The apartment is connected via a Prestige 841 DSL modem (I believe this is a Zyxel unit).
We get the "the user refused the connection" message when audio or video chat is attempted. We are able to chat text-only. Also, Skype works (wasn't installed until after these problems were noted).
At my end I have a MacBook Pro running 10.4.6, built-in iSight camera, iChat 3.1.4, behind an AirPort Extreme. I am able to video and audio chat with other people behind this configuration.
Also my son can't audio or video chat with iChat with other users, so clearly the problem is at his end.
I had him change the port that iChat works on from 5190 to 443 but that didn't help. QuickTime streaming speed has been adjusted on both his computer and mine.
It appears that the prestige 841 is not actually a router but just a dsl modem, so I don't think there is any port issue with that unit. The airport express isn't doing any port forwarding, to my knowledge, at his end, but I admit to being a bit confused.
I tried looking at the Ralph Johns' ichat pages but I couldn't figure much out from them, especially since I in am the USA and my son's machines are in Belgium. Hopefully I have provided enough information to get a step-by-step solution from the local genuises here - please?
    Thanks for any help.

    Hi Andrew,
I can not see the 841 listed on this site.
    http://portforward.com/routers.htm
This may be that it does not Route or it could mean it is recently new and not on the list yet.
However we can find out by doing a few things.
If you go to System Preference > Network.
There are two drop downs near the top.
Choose the Airport option in the second drop down.
    Now click the TCP/IP tab
It should then look like the Pic Molly and I have been swopping in this thread http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2531947#2531947
(your IP as 10.0.1.xxx and the "router" being 10.0.1.1 fro the Airport)
An Airport device does not do Port Forwarding as such.
in it's default mode is does NAT everything. This means it does point all data to a specific IP from one side (modem or ISP if modem is in Bridge) to the other (LAN = Computers).
This can mean problems if the modem does route and is DOING DHCP.
IF he takes the Airport out of the connection set up and connects direct to the modem does it work ?
Get him to repeat the above in System Preferences > Network.
This time he will have to select Built-in Ethernet from the drop down.
We will need to know the IP that now shows up. Refere to the thread I linked you to and the posts to Molly about how to tel if the modem is in Bridge from the IP numbers he gets.
There are test accounts and real live testers listed in the 3 tables on this page
    http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/ContactTesters.html
Which ones can you get to and can your son when connected direct to the modem ?
IF the Modem is routing then it will be simply a question of turning DHCP Off in the Airport and making it a Wireless Access point.
    Go to Applications/Utilities
    Open Airport Admin Utility.
Log on to the Airport in the first window.
Then go to the Network tab in the main window.
Deselect Distributing Addresses (This is the Airport's DHCP)
If you repeat the System Preferences > Network > > TCP/IP tab thing you should now see the same or at least similar IPs as when connected directly to the modem
Keep the Quicktime setting to match the download speed.
As it is a Zyxel keep the port at 443.
Also get him to Check if his MAc Firewall is On
( System Prefereces > Sharing > Firewall tab)
Also check the Advanced Button here and theat it is Not set set to "BLock ALl UDP Traffic"
