How to keep a clean install with migration assistant

I have a mid-2009 13" MacBook Pro (5,5 - Intel Core 2 Duo - 2.26 GHz) with 8 GB RAM. I am currently running on OS 10.6.8 and want to upgrade to Yosemite.
I also plan to replace my original drive with an SSD.
I have had a series of Macs going back many years, usually getting a new one every few years and migrating everything from the old to the new. My Macs always start out fast but start slowing down within a short while. I was told this could be due to the fact that I am importing a bunch of old stuff onto my machines and that it would be better to keep the old stuff on a separate drive.
So I want to do a clean install of Yosemite and the small handful of other apps I need.
I will pull the original drive and put it in an enclosure and can either use it or my backup via Time Machine to migrate my files to the SSD via Migration Assistant.
What I am unclear on is what all I will want or need to migrate over, and what I want to avoid. I will bring my documents folder of course but I want to be careful not to bring over any unneeded apps, preferences, libraries, etc. Are there any resources for guiding me through the process? Is Migration Assistant the best tool for this?

Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.

  • Clean Install to Migrate Assistant

My computer is pretty screwed up- and time machine isn't saving the day on this one. Anyway, I'm super paranoid about my itunes/iphoto/iweb files and I was thinking about doing a clean install of snow leopard then using the migrate assistant to get that stuff back on using a time machine backup. Can I do this? Should I do this?

Waaayyyy ahead of you. I backed up everything to a completely separate drive last night. Is there an article you can point me to that can describe exactly how to do this? I just don't understand that if i completely wipe my drives, and do a clean install, how can i access TM from the "new" system? Also will it allow me to pick and choose exactly what files to restore? Thanks for all the help.
It depends on what you want to do, and that depends on what's wrong with your system (which isn't clear):
If you only want to replace your version of OSX, without disturbing your settings, users, data, etc., don't wipe your internal HD. Do an +Archive and Install+ instead. See the *Archive & Install* section of the Glenn Carter - Restoring Your Entire System / Time Machine *User Tip* at the top of this forum. That's the easiest, quickest, and safest thing to do.
If for some reason you really want to erase your internal HD and reload your apps, users, configuration and data, see the *Erase, Install, & Migrate* section of that same Tip. That doesn't let you pick and choose, though. There are four categories: Apps, settings, Users, Other files and folders. Those are yes or no selections; you can't do much find-tuning.
If you want to fine-tune, your best bet is probably to do the +Erase, Install & Migrate+ but omit apps and perhaps files. Then use the normal Time Machine "Star Wars" display to selectively restore what you want. You will miss things that way, and have various difficulties, especially with apps that were installed with special installers (instead of just dragged into your Applications folder). That's because they put files in various places, so it's best to re-install them with the original installer.
If you're going to "fine-tune" what you want, you may also want to refer to this: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6185507

  • Problems with CS6 after installing with Migration Assistant?

I just used Mac OS Migration assistant to get CS6 into a new computer.  Everything was hunky dory on the first computer and I already deactivated CS6 on my older second computer.
But I am now having CS6 issues on the new one.
InDesign won’t start up and Photoshop thinks I’m using a trial version.
My feeling is that the problem comes from AAM.  All my Adobe problems seem to come from this unpleasant program.
Can anyone suggest how I fix things please?

    Simply install the software correctly.

  • Clean install VS migration assistant

    Hello
I recently upgarded to a larger 120GB HDD for my G4 giga ether duo using the OSX Tiger's migration assistant. However, something went wrong and some of my daily used applicaiton like flash and photoshop are behaving badly. So I am considering doing a clean -install on the new drive to avoid any un-needed files and apps that accumulated on the old mac for the past 5-6 years.
My quesiton is, after I install osx tiger on the new drive, is there a way to migrate or copy just the app and user acct info that you need from the old HDD? such as email acct, iTunes songs, iPhoto pics, Address, app preference and such? and avoid the app that you dont need?
Any suggestions and commends are greatly appreciated
    Michael Huang

Is there a way to migrate or copy just the app and user acct info that you need from the old HDD?"
Yes...just use the Migration Assistant and transfer only the user files.

  • How to select files to transfer with migration assistant

I am trying to transfer my iphoto library from imac to imac.  I am using Snow Leopard 10.6.8 I have used migration assistant to transfer settings, applications etc. but how can I select the files from the old computer to transfer to the new one?  The application transferred but not the library.  Further to this I would like to transfer other files but there doesn't seem to be a way to select those folders on the old computer.  Anyone have an answer?  Thanks

I don't have an external drive.  How do you select which files to transfer using Migration assistant?

  • How to install a clean install with leopard upgrade DVD!

Does somebody know how to do an clean install with a Leopard upgrade DVD?
I bought my MacBook for 1 week ago, and them said that i would get leopard sent later. And when i get it, its a upgrade cd that i cant install only leopard on my ny frsh hard-drive. *** apple?

First, there is no such thing as a "clean install" option in OS X. But the "cleanest" install is to start with a reformatted drive (using Disk Utility's "Partition" tab), followed by an install of the OS that will be cleansed of any traces of OS or file system corruption. (The "unclean" options, "Upgrade" & "Archive & Install" won't be possible, & the erase part of "Erase & Install" is at this point redundant.)
However, if you use Setup Assistant (which runs after rebooting) or Migration Assistant to bring over copies of old system components, applications, & settings, you may be reintroducing something "unclean" from the old versions.
This said, if your up-to-date disk is just an updater (nobody seems to know yet), you can do a "cleanest possible" install by following the above with your original Tiger Installer disk, letting it reboot & not importing anything during setup, & then following the instructions supplied with the up-to-date disk to upgrade. At this point, you may want to clone the startup disk for future reference, before adding back in your apps & user files by whatever method(s) you chose.

  • How to do a clean install without loosing anything

    Hi all,
I (foolishly) installed Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard as an update to my existing 10.5.8 Leopard install last year. Ever since I've had a host of small but annoying problems, that no one else seems to be complaining about. (For example in the finder half the time when I right click on a file the pop-up menu disappears after half a second and I have to click and hold to keep it open so I can make a selection.)
I'm starting to wonder if some of the problems I'm having are caused by the upgrade install, instead of a fresh install.
So I'd like to do a clean install of the OS, but it's been so long since I've done that I've forgotten how that works. How can I do a clean install without loosing all my data? Do I have to pull all my data off the hard drive, wipe it clean and start from scratch like you do on a PC, or is there an easier way? (I hope there is an easier way.) If someone could point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it.

I'm starting to wonder if some of the problems I'm having are caused by the upgrade install, instead of a fresh install.
I did an upgrade install on my old MacBook Pro, and it worked just fine. The key is that the system has to be in good working order when the update is applied... if there are minor problems, those problems can be magnified by an upgrade.
Of course, this may not be your problem... have you checked all your software and hardware for compatibility with Snow Leopard? One site that you can use, though it's by no means comprehensive, is:
    http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/
So I'd like to do a clean install of the OS, but it's been so long since I've done that I've forgotten how that works. How can I do a clean install without loosing all my data?
Unfortunately, there's no easy way to do a true clean reinstall. In a nutshell, here's what you need to do:
    1) Back up all your data. Make sure you've got application serial numbers stored somewhere!
    2) Now back up all your data in another place. If you don't have two copies, you won't have any backups after the next step... the backup from step 1 becomes the original, and a poorly-timed drive failure would ruin you.
    3) Reboot from the Mac OS X install disk (SL disk in this case)
    4) Erase the hard drive with Disk Utility
    5) Install the system
    6) Update everything to the current version via Software Update
    7) Install any apps you need
    8) Update those apps if necessary
    9) Reconfigure anything that needs it (network settings, appearance preferences, etc)
    10) Copy +only documents+, no settings files, from your backup, preferably manually rather than with Migration Assistant (which can sometimes copy more than you might want it to).
That's about it! For assistance with any of those items, just say the word.

I have a new SSD drive and need to either migrate my old HD data, including the Windows 8.1 OS or do a a clean install.  I have obtained the ISO, prepared the boot for the flashdrive and downloaded the install software.  It asks for the product key.   I used the suggested BIOS reader and obtained "a" product key off the BIOS and used that it but (as above) it does not recognize the image.
How id I get my single Windows license onto my new SSD HD?  Reload, clean install, ???
How do I get the proper product key or confirm it is correct?
It is a new system with little data that I need to copy. I just want the operating system.  I have the driver disc that came with it.

  • Clean install and migration of only one or two program

How does one do a clean install and migrate only one or two applications.

I don't believe there is a "clean install" on the Snow Leopard disk if you launch the install from your standard system boot. I believe you need to:
    1) Put the SL disk in the machine drive.
    2) Restart your machine.
    3) Hold down the 'c' key during startup, to boot from the SL disk.
    4) Once the system boots up, it starts the Snow Leopard install process. However, you have a menu bar where you can run several system utilities, such as Disk Utility.
    5) Run Disk Utility and erase/reformat the main system harddisk. This will give you a "clean" disk to install Snow Leopard on.
    6) After Disk Utility finishes, proceed with the install process.
    7) After intallation of Snow Leopard, restore any apps/data you want from backups and/or original installation packages.
    Hope this helps,

  • How to Perform a "Clean Install" - Offline installer link not working...

The thread containing - "How to Perform a Clean Install of Flash Player in Mac OS X" -  was an answer given by Mike M. several times in this forum. I attempted to access the "offline installer" link that was offered, but it does not seem to be working. Does anyone have an updated link to a functional offline installer that I can use to finally download Flash Player for Mac OS X v. 10.9.5?
I receive an error message stating "Error: Unable to proceed with the installation."
Many of the photography and game websites I use (almost all, actually) FP, and I would really love to get back to my daily routine soon!
    Best Regards,
    Mel R.

    Hi Mel,
The correct link is posted at the bottom of the Installation problems | Flash Player | Mac page, in the 'Still having problems section'. The download links recently changed and it appears the FAQ was not updated.  I have updated the with the help page URL as it's less likely that this link will change, and if it does, a re-direct to the new location would be implemented.

Do a backup before doing anything.
If you want to make a clean install of Mountain Lion, boot into the Recovery Volume (command - R) on a restart, use Disk Utility to Verify/Repair  the disk and run Repair Permissions. Then erase the hard drive using Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format using the Options button. Reinstall Yosemite. Restart normally and test. Use Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant to import what you want.
