How to keep everything synchronised on two Macs

Hello,
My Father and I have just got two new Macs: I've got a MacBook Pro (not retina), and my Father has got the new 21.5" iMac. (And of course they both came with OSX Mountain lion).
We need to get them both to synchronise for work and keep them synchronised - if possible keeping all settings, preferences, files, applications etc. synchronised. So that when we swap Macs now and then if going out somewhere, they are exactly the same.
(Haven't got a Time capsule or Time Machine at the moment).
Thank you.
All the best,
Daniel

Thank you both, I've found some third party sharing software for example SugarSync - But might just go with local network - home folder.
While on the subject of sharing on Macs, do you know about printing from a iPhone/iPad through a Canon printer plugged in to (my) MacBook Pro: http://discussions.apple.com/message/20580877#20580877

  • How do I share files between two Macs on my wireless network?

I have an iMac G4 and an ibook G3 on a wireless network. I have "file sharing" activated on both computers. (Also Appletalk, which may or may not be a misguided move, but I got the idea from OSX "Help.")
When I try to get from either computer onto the other, my computer is recognized by name (another alternative is to log on as a "guest"). I'm prompted for a password. None of the passwords I use works. I've tried the administrative passwords for both computers.
How do I get beyond this hurdle to share files? I've posted elsewhere to no avail. This must be an easy one. How do you share files between two macs on one network?

Do your accounts on the machines have the same short name? It's an issue I've seen a few names.. one machine with bsmith, the other with bobsmith, but the long names for both being "Bob Smith". The login windows would confuse users because it showed their names, but because the short names didn't match, it wouldn't work.
The password you should use is the administrative one, so I don't know why you're not having luck.

Can anyone tell me how I keep everything I had in my old photoshop, now I've updated to Photoshop CC 2014.  It did give me the option to transport over all my presets, but because I didn't have internet access at the time, it couldn't do it.  Now I'm not getting the option.  Please help.

Migrating Presets does not require a network connection and you can still migrate your cc presets if you still have CC installed.  Use Photoshop menu Edit>Presets>Migrate Presets...  Migrating presets only migrates presets.  It does not migrate Plugins, settings, extensions and scripts.  CC 2014 is also not completely backwards compatible with CC.  Support for Flash Panels and Oil Painter filter have been removed.  So extensions like mini bridge no longer work in CC 2014

  • How To Share USB Devices Between Two Mac's?

I am musician and have several USB controllers that I would like to share between my Mac pro and my Macbook Pro. (drum pad, keyboard controller,USB midi interface etc.) I have seen several switches offered on the net, however they all seem to be for PC from what I have found really.
Belkin 7-Port Desktop USB Hub (F4U017) was recommended but the language in the the description does not mirror the same types of functions I am seeing mentioned in units made specifically for the PC. (ie "share USB devices between 2 computers.") Did I taint my mind by looking at the PC items first? Is it really as easy as to plug two Macs into the same USB hub and share their devices? Does anyone have a working solution they are using for this type of situation? How do you do it?
If I could share 7 USB devices between the two systems, I think I would be just this side close to Heaven in ease!
    thank you!
    Cheers,
    Marty

Thank you for the lead Direwolf, it felt like there might be a little more to it than just connecting to a hub. I just converted from PC about 8 months ago. Loving my macs!! A KVM switch I had not thought of that. I will look into. I read the wiki page and it seems like a kvm would replace the screen sharing feature the two machines can now use easy enough, only without using the cpu overhead to do it??? (i think is what I understood)
Does anyone have a model they are using and can recommend? (it's a jungle +out there+) I just did a quick search and found mostly kvm switches with 2-ports USB,. ... looking for seven, come on lucky seven! lol!
I will keep looking. In the mean time if readers have additional ideas, I will be very grateful! Cheers!

  • How do I share files between two Macs using ethernet?

I have two Macs, both running OS X 10.4.11. How can I connect them using ethernet in order to transfer files back and forth?
    Pete

I have an ethernet hub with both computers connected to it. You may be able to just connect the two computers with a cable, but it might have to be a "Crossover cable"
Go to your system preferences>>Sharing and turn of file sharing for each or both computers.
Then go to the Finder>>Go>>Network and the other computer should show up there. Click to connect.
You will have a choice to connect under a password or as a guest. If you want security, set up passwords, otherwise just use guest.

  • How to keep mails synchronized between two systems?

    Hello,
I have a home iMac and will soon need to have a portable for occasions when I'm away from home.
I suppose it would be easy to ensure identical environments by booting the portable system on a clone of the system disk of the home iMac.
However, the next question is: how to keep the two systems synchronized and, especially, how to keep the mails stored on the two systems synchronized? I'm looking for a solution for this problem. What are the options offered by Mountain Lion to do this?
Thanks for any hints or tips,
    Denis.

Although not free, perhaps this program might do what you want.

  • How to get SMS forwarding on two macs

I have two macs and want SMS forwarding on both of them. But it looks like you can only have it on one at a time. They always switch names and sometimes both don't work when I am trying to hook them up. How do I get them both to send and receive SMS?

Thank you both, I've found some third party sharing software for example SugarSync - But might just go with local network - home folder.

  • How to see SPACES/network of two macs

I read that we can activate (see?) spaces with F8. I have a MAC BOOK so I think FN and F8. But when i press nothing happens. i am not sure I understand this. I never used shortcuts before so maybe I am missing something.
Another thing. I have two Macs. One is connected to the Lan and the other uses Airport. is there a way I can use one to back up the other? It doesn't seem that one can see the other. Do i need a cross cable?

My apologies in advance if I am stating the obvious here ....
From my experience using System Preferences, as you have described, provides Leopard with the knowledge of which "Space" to load an application. It does not actually load it.
Therefore pressing F8 or (Fn-F8) will not show the applications unless you have actually explicitly loaded them beforehand. If you subsequently load an application it will then appear in the correct "Space".

  • How can I synchronize Documents between two Macs

My early 2007 iMac has been hospitalized for over two weeks waiting for a new logic board from Apple. I have a mid-2009 MacBook Pro to use in the meantime, but have never synchronized the two machines, so many files that I want/need are not available. When the iMac gets back home, I would like to copy the complete Documents fiolder from the iMac to the MacBook and then find some way of keeping them synchronized in the future. (Both my machines are running OS X 10.7.2.)

you can check out syncmate - it syncs data between Macs. According to information at their website, folders can be synced in real time - seems like it's what you were looking for.
According to information on their website you get 50MB for free and 200MB if you pay $40, I don't know about you but I fill 50MB very fast.

  • How do i transfer files between two macs over the net (FTP)

    Hi,
Couldn't find a thread like this, apologies if its been discussed already recently, I'm trying to enable two iMacs both Intel, both running 10.4.10 to be able to swap files (quite large 350MB) over the net just using Tiger.
We both have .Mac accounts but the files only upload properly to our iDisk 1 out of 3 times and its getting annoying, I basically want my mate to be able to drag a file off my HD onto his via the net using no other programs just Tiger, is this possible?
If not, what's the best free program to use.
    Thanks

You'll have to get an FTP client as the Finder only reads, not writes to an FTP server. I can't suggest a free one. You will also need to open your computers up to the world. If you don't know how to do that, search for Port Forwarding and your particular router. You'll have to open up port 21 for FTP.
Plain old FTP is not very secure, so you shouldn't leave it open all the time. SFTP is Secure FTP, and you can use Fugu to use it. You'll still need to set up Port forwarding, but you can pick whatever port number you want. Fugu lets you pick the port number. You should set up standard users on each machine and make a sftpTransfer folder in the /Users/Shared/ folder. This will allow each of you to access the files. sftp allows anyone to see the directory structure, but still maintains the permissions from OS X. So, as standard users, you can look into each other's Home folder, but you won't be able to get into the subfolders or transfer files to or from any unshared locations.
By the way, I wrote an entire post describing how to use sftp from the command line before I decided to look for a client app for you. Then I found Fugu and changed it all.
    Edit:
I forgot to mention you must turn on Remote Login in the sharing pane, and you'll have to use port 22 as this is the only one Mac OS allows remote connections on.

  • How to keep same database with two different names in SharePoint 2013 for two different applications

    Hi All,
    I have very strange situation.
I had SP2010 production database(wss_content_contoso) migrated to SP13 few months back to migrate one site collection only while I have 15 site collections stored in this database and created a site contoso.com
Now, I want to migrate same(wss_content_contoso) SP2010 database to SP13 and want to create contoso2.com.
I changed database name from wss_content_contoso to wss_content_contoso2 and assigned newID during mount process.
After this exercise, I don't see any site for contoso2.com and issue seems to be the same database.
    My question is!!!!
How I can keep both databases(actually same database with different names) and run both application simultaneously?
    Any help appreciated!!
    Thank you,

You need to run Backup-SPSite/Restore-SPSite on each Site Collection you want to 'duplicate'. You cannot restore the same Content Database to the same farm as the Site Collections have the same GUID, which is stored globally for the farm.

  • How do I download Mail to two Macs from server?

Lion seems peculiar about this: if I check my (imap att.net) email from my Macbook, the messages load just fine. When I go to my iMac and check email, the messages that have already downloaded to my Macbook aren't offered by the server anymore--they don't download--AND, even stranger, my inbox is mostly empty because messages don't seem to stay locally saved (i.e., on my Mac drive). That means there isn't an archive of all my emails on both my macs for me to search when I need to; whichever Mac I happen to check email on first ends up having more messages. To find an old email, I have to search BOTH Macs, instead of like in Snow Leopard when each Mac would download the same group of new messages off my ISP's server.
Is this making sense? Basically, it seems that Lion only downloads messages from an email server once and then deletes the original from off the server, so my second Mac can't also download a matching set of incoming emails as well. How do I adjust my settings so that Mac doesn't delete new messages from the server, so I can also download the same messages to my second Mac as well?

Are you sure your mail account is IMAP? This sounds more like the behavior with a POP account than an IMAP account. With IMAP, messages are never downloaded; they are always on the server (unless manually copied) and just marked as being read. Please confirm your type of account and post back.
    Regards.

  • How do i sync music on two macs

How do I sync the music libraries and playlists on my macbookpro and my macbookair?

As mentioned this is for content only. With homesharing running and whilst viewing the other library, change the setting in the bottom left corner to 'items not in my library', then click the import button in the bottom right corner.
For future imports you may want to set up automatic imports from the settings menu.
For playlists you would need to export them as XML files on one computer (file > library > export playlist) then transfer it to the other computer and import it.
