How to keep iMac screen black while keeping secondary monitor running for visual experiments in Matlab

Hi,
I'm trying to run a visual experiment using PsychToolbox in Matlab.
I've attached a secondary monitor to my iMac for this purpose and I'm having difficulties trying to
'black out' the iMac screen.
I need the secondary monitor to run at a refresh rate of 120Hz and at linearised luminance (did this for my secondary monitor),
so I can't really use my iMac screen. However, i need my iMac screen to be darken out because I'm doing a vision experiment.
I tried dimming my iMac screen but it doesn't go completely dark. I tried Ctrl+Shift+Eject (or was it Command) but it will darken both
monitors. I also tried mirroring, but it doesn't seem to work too.
I'm really stuck and any ideas will be greatly appreciated!
shui
NB:I'm using OS X Version 10.8.3.

I do not know the details of your experiment, but creating a black monitor is not difficult. For example a completely black page, e.g. in Power Point, set to fill the screen?
The advantage of doing this with PP is that you can move in to or out of the black page with just the space bar. You can set up your monitors so PP is displayed on just one monitor.

• How to disable iMac screen and not to put it into sleep?!!!

I would like to play a movie on my iMac but to watch it on my LCD TV. How to disable iMac screen and not to put it into sleep. PLS have in mind that ctrl+shift+ eject does not work, it makes my iMac screen go black as well as the tv screen. So far, i have red many articles concerning this subject, but no one seems to have the right answer. I simply can´t believe that apple did not think of it, as it is nothing new ....
Thanks

My brother has eight cats, so your not along. Fortunetly his go outside.
I have been talking to the people over at macforums and they had some good thoughts. One guy suggested going analog and soldering in a rocker switch on the cable connecting a hub to the computer, turn off switch turns off keyboard and mouse.
I was prepared to try that but a great idea came along. Arch, you might be interested in this too. Buy a cheap (found one locally for $20) usb kvm switch that takes one usb keyboard and mouse and connects it to two pcs/macs and only connect one of the outs to my system. There is a button to switch between the two, so when I want to disable the keyboard and mouse, I just switch it to pc2, which is not connected to anything.
Cheap and easy solution. I wish I could of figured out how to do this with software, since there would be no money if it was freeware, but I guess you cant win them all.
Thanks everyone for chiming in!

• How to keep the field open for input with error message in report program

Hi,
Need a help in solving the below issue.
"How to keep the field open for input with error message in report program"
Regards,
C.Shasiraj.

Hi...
you have to use the event:
AT SELECTION-SCREEN ON <FIELD> EVENT.
u have to give an error message in this event.
Consider the following Example:
PARAMETERS : NUMBER TYPE I.
AT SELECTION-SCREEN ON NUMBER.
IF NUMBER = 10.
MESSAGE 'Number vakue is 10' TYPE 'E'.
ENDIF.
START-OF-SELECTION.
WRITE NUMBER.

in this if u give the value of number = 10, it will not proceed further, if u give some other value other than 10 you will proceed further...
Execute this program once u will understand....

• Can someone please send me some tips on how to keep my G5 running quickly?

I'm looking for some great tips on how to keep my G5 running quickly and smoothly. I'm new to owning a MAC and PC's have a disc clean-up and defragment program (among other thing) that I used constantly to keep things running smoothly. Thanks for your help!

Try using Disk Utility to repair your startup disk (hard drive) as shown in Dr.Smokes Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption.
Doing the other things in there may help.
Here's his maintenance link so you can start a monthly maintenance program, if you haven't done so already.
Cheers!

• How to make the screen dim while music is playing

I can't get the screen to dim while playing music on my iPod Nano. It used to be that the screen dimmed while music was playing until it lit up when I hit a button to change volume, track, etc. This preserved the battery life. It seems that I inadvertantly changed some setting just a few days ago because I saw the apple logo appear on the screen and since then have not been able to figure out how to make the screen dim while playing music. I think the fact that the screen is staying on while I'm listening now is making the battery out very quickly. Does anyone know how to solve this problem? Thank you!

Hello ZingMA,
You need to reset the backlight timer.
Go to settings, general, and backlight. You should be able to set if from there. I am assuming you have a 6th gen nano. If you have a different model the user manuals have the steps. Found here:

Hope this helps.

• Is there a way to turn the new iMac screen off while running a song?

I know the key command is shift control eject-- and it works-- but only for a few seconds. Does anybody know how to turn the screen off so that it will stay off for any serious period of time?
I used to do this in my g5 by just turning the monitor off. great to trick to ensure that i'm listening to a mix w/ my ears--- not my eyes.
thank you

Thank you for all the responses.
I've tried the black cloth. it's okay-- but i wind up have to attach something to the iMac--- and my clients are very sensitive to the things look here. i think it's petty-- but whatever. Also-- i have to constantly be taking it on/off as i make ajustments.
As far as turning around goes-- this is okay. I've tried it. the thing is-- your the way your ears receive sound-- is significantly different when you turn around. not drastically-- but again-- i'm talking about slight adjustments anyhow. any little difference can throw things off.
And the idea of a screen saver-- well-- here's the thing: when i'm trying to think only of music-- i don't even want to have to look at a computer screen. Imagine if you owned a nice pioneer 1970's stereo receiver and killer set of speakers. But everytime you were listening to it-- you had to look at a some sort of computer image. just not that pleasant.
comfort is pretty important to me at this point and that's kind of the whole goal. to still sit where i sit, look where i look, but not have to see a lit display on a computer screen.
i will try the hot corner thing.
thank you all for your responses.

• How to mirror iMac screen wirelessly through a mac mini connected to an hdmi port of HD TV?

I have a new Mac Mini connected to a Sony HD TV. On the same network but in a different room I have my iMac. I can control the iMac with wireless mouse and keyboard from the same room where the TV and Mac Mini reside. I would like to work on my iMac but use the HD TV as my monitor so I can show slideshows and iMovie projects without transferring files to the MacMini first. Is it possible, and if so, how do I go about setting it up?

Your iMac likely supports a higher resolution than the TV does. The maximum standard TVs today use is 1920x1080, and if your iMac is an Intel Core i3 or i5, its own display is at least that high of a resolution. Which model of iMac do you have?
If your iMac is running at least Leopard (10.5), then both machines have Screen Sharing built in. It can be accessed from the Finder, but as often as you would like to use it you should go to Macintosh HD > System > Library > CoreServices and drag it (the icon) to your Dock. That will create the shortcut to get to it easily. As I noted before, the built in Screen Sharing VNC software doesn't do full screen, but third party VNC software can. Both machines do not need to be using the thrid party VNC software, just the one viewing - in this case your Mac mini. Chicken of the VNC is a popular free one, fairly easy to use:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/cotvnc/
For more info about how to set up Screen Sharing and how to use the included application:
http://mac.appstorm.net/how-to/os-x/using-screen-sharing-in-os-x-leopard/
Note that you will have to use the settings in System Preferences, regardless of what VNC software you use. Both systems will need to have Screen Sharing settings enabled.

• How to keep MacBook Pro running ...

Hi everyone!!
New to MAC world, bought it 2 months ago, I want to keep my MAC running fast and smooth as it is right now, WHAT IS THE BEST WAY to keep it that way?
I have search around blogs, ppl have different point of view.
Someone said all I need is to follow this:
1 Make redundants backups
2. Keep your software up to dat
3. Don't install crapware,
4. Beware of trojan
I have read ppl say MACs don't really need mantenace, few if any, THEN others says they need maintenance.
If they dont really need maintenance, how do old files get rid of itself?
I need to know what is the best program or what should I do to clean old files or unwanted files out of the system to keep it clean and fast.
Sorry if this has been posted before.
Thank you!

I've had my mac for 3 years and it is just as speedy as the first day and have done nothing on my own. It takes care of itself. It's a good idea to restart it at least once a month to dump the cache. What old files are you referring to? I delete the old ones I no longer need.

• How to keep keyboard qwerty layout for french input

Hello all. I'm a new converted to OS X world, long time windows user. I'm experiencing a really great time with my MacBook Pro since i bought it about one week now, learning and learning a lot of new things about it since this OS and the windows OS are not really the same.
I spend a lot of time on this forum looking for answers to my qestions and i've found so many answers, thanks to the seniors who helping us the newbies.
Here is one question I'm not finding a thread of on this forum: My keyboard is a qwerty one, but i use both english and french language for my work, when i added the french language to the keyboard, it automaticaly convert the layout into azerty keyboard everytime i want to type thing in french. I'm having iOS and i was able to keep the qwerty layout for french so that when i'm typing in french, and push "q w e r t y" it out put "q w e r t y" which is what i want, as for the accents that can be find in several french words, the auto correct correct the as i'm typing on my iDevice so that i do not have to wory about the acsents. I've noticed that the MBP also have the auto correct feature in the keyboard setting, so i was hoping that there is actually a way to set the French language to use the qwerty layout instead of auto converting into azerty layout whenever i want to input using french. And if there is a way to set it, or a software that i need to download to get what i need then please advice me a how - to or a step by step instructions.
thanks in advance for you helps.

Thanks Tom, I like the "hold down key" trick.
However I come back to the initial request, as I can manage with the accent in several ways: autocorrect, hold down trick, alt-` shortcut; but they are not so direct solution!
The solution i am expecting is changing the language to french as I know by heart where the accent keys are. But my keyboard is US (so qwerty). When I change to french (it comes with azerty) I need to adapt with the letters. So I would like to get also qwerty arrangemet of letters for french language setting.
If that is possible I will be able to set up on time the french language when I'm typing text in french, having to adapt only with the accents keys which I know by heart. It would be the perfect solution for me. By the way, I'm currently learning how to type the accents with the US keyboard which is the more direct solution I've found untill now.
Regards.

• How to send the canvas window to a secondary monitor ?

Hi there,
I already hooked up a secondary monitor.
How do I send the canvas window to a secondary monitor ?
Thanks

Once you have your extenal display connected, you need to go into System Preferences > Displays and turn off mirror displays mode. This puts your external display in extended desktop mode. Then you can drag the canvas window from your primary display to your external display.
Note: in my experience if you normally have the Dock on the right side of the screen it will disappear when you do this. Just do  > Dock and select one of the other Dock positions.

• How to keep that valve open for certain period of time and shut off automatically

Hi everyone,
The objective of the VI is to measure pH and then open acid or base valve based on pH valve. Below is my UNFINISHED VI
My question is: if, for example, the pH is 10, then, the program will open acidic valve for 5 seconds and then shut off automatically. After that, wait for 5 second. this process will go on and on as I use while loop, but I just dont know how to control the valve on for 5sec and off and then wait for 5sec.
Anyone can help me out? Thank you very much
In the picture, please enter those values before running
P.S The VI is based on previously posted vi by someone who made it 1 yrs ago.

1. The reason the valves close immediately is that the Elapsed Time VI does not cause any wait, it only measures the time. So the valves closed within a small fraction of a second of the time they opened.
2. I modified your VI to wait until the Elapsed Time has ended. See the "wait" state. I probably modified some of your other functionality in the process, but this shows one way you could do the timing.
3. You do not need any Value property nodes. They should never be used if the value can be wired directly.
4. You do not need any sequence structures. Dataflow will determine the order of things occurring.
5. If you use an enum for the state machine (and it is a good way to name and select states), you should make it a type def. Then when you need to change it as I did to add several states, you only need to change the Type Def in one place and the changes propagate through to every place you used the control or constants derived from it.
6. I added a Halt state which will close both valves before stopping the program. When you are controlling a real world process, it is important to consider the start up and shutdown requirements. For example the digital outputs of the USB-6008 default to inputs when the device is first powered up. And, the inputs are pulled high by a 4700 ohm resistor (at least I think I recall that value). Will this open your valves before the program starts running and sets the I/O lines to outputs and forces them low?
The USB-6008 has rather limited drive on the digital lines. You will probably need a buffer between it and the valve coils.
PID and PWM are more complicated than I want to get into here. First, are your valves proportional or on/off? Second, (assuming that they are on/off) how fast can you open and close them without destroying them in the first week? What is their expected lifetime in terms of the number of operations? How fast do you need to be able to change them to keep your pH where you want it? Are these values compatible?
