  • How to keep music on external hard drive, but play on iMac?

So, I have nearly 500GB of music on an external hard drive. I don't want to move them into my iMac, because it'd obviously eat up all my free space. My question is, how can I keep them on the external hard drive, but still access and play them while I'm on my Mac?
How would I do so using itunes? Would it be simpler to use a different program? If so, which one? Cost?
Could some please tell me how to do this step-by-step? I am at a loss for how to do this! Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance.
(Also, on a slightly unrelated topic, does anyone know a good software to create album cover? I like to make them for mix cds I make. Name cost, preferably something cheap).
    Thanks again!

How would I do so using itunes?
Open the Advanced section of the iTunes preferences and set it not to copy content to the iTunes Music folder when it's added to the library. Alternatively, drag them onto the QuickTime Player in the Dock.

  • How to keep music files on external hard drive

My laptop is only 80 gigs. My external hard drive is 500. I want to keep my music on the external drive because I have over a hundred gigs of music. I would like iTunes to just reach into the external drive and play the tunes without bringing them into my laptop, yet whenever I add the files to my library, they are brought into my laptop, filling up all the space. How do I get them into the library without bringing them into the laptop? My favorite way of playing music is by Shuffle.

Turn off the preference setting for "Copy Files to iTunes library"
Choose Edit > Preferences and click Advanced.
    Uncheck the "Copy files" checkbox.

  • Upgrading from iPhone 3G to 4 - how to keep music/SMSs/etc?

    Hi all,
Just bought a new iP4. As far as I know, most music on my 3G is on the phone ONLY and not on the computer. How do I make sure that I transfer EVERYTHING to my 4, including photos, SMSs, music, etc.?
    Thanks!

All iTunes content on your iPhone should be in your iTunes library on your computer - all music, movies, tv shows, and 3rd party apps.
If you have Sync Music selected under the Music tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes - you don't have manually manage music and videos selected with their being no benefit with manually managing music and videos with an iPhone, after purchasing music from the iTunes store with your iPhone, the music will be copied to your iTunes library on your computer automatically the first time you sync your iPhone with iTunes after doing so.
The same with 3rd party apps when having Sync Apps selected under the Apps tab for your iPhone sync preferences, which should be selected for a number of reasons. With this selected, after downloading an app direct with your iPhone, the app will be copied to your iTunes library automatically the first time you sync your iPhone with iTunes after doing so.
Photos in your iPhone's Camera Roll can and should be imported by your computer as with any other digital camera. The Camera Roll is for temporary storage no different with any other digital camera.
And photos transferred from your computer via the iTunes sync/transfer process should remain on your computer.
If you don't have Sync Music selected and Sync Apps selected, with your 3G connected to iTunes, at the iTunes menu bar go to File and select Transfer Purchases From - the name of your iPhone. This should transfer all music purchased/downloaded from the iTunes store direct with your iPhone and the same for all 3rd party apps.

  • IPod Nano - How to keep music but clear personal info

I have sold my iPod nano and want to keep the music but make sure any personal info is deleted.  How do I do that?

You should not do that, because the new owner does not own your music.  It would be considered illegal, and discussing how is not appropriate on the discussion forum owned and operated by Apple.
Also, even without identifying info "on the iPod," your identity may be embedded in the song files.  So, if the new owner extracts the song files from the iPod and distributes them online, song files with your name (or other identifying data) may get replicated by the millions.
Do a Restore and sell it "empty."

  • How to keep music on an external hard drive, but still manage in itunes

Hello, so i just got a new pc. Have downloaded and authorized Itunes and have pointed my file media folder to the external hard drive. What I'd like to do is keep all my music on the external hard drive without saving any music onto my new pc. So is it possible to keep all my music on the external hard drive but still be able to manage the music library in itunes?

    Hi,
I'm not sure if this is exactly what you're asking for, but I asked a similar question once before. I hope this helps.
Here is a tutorial from Apple: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1364?viewlocale=en_US

  • How to keep music on a shared account separate?

We have been able to do this for the past few years with no problem. We all downloaded music on a desktop computer and synced our ipods from it. Each family member has a different user account on the computer (not itunes, but the computer).
Recently, I got a new laptop and downloaded iTunes on it. However upon signing in it ended up sharing everyone's music with everyone else, presumably because there were no user accounts to separate music. I realized this later.
Now I need to get all of our music separated again and I cannot figure out how. Help?!

    Howdy sjkm,
I was thinking about what could be causing this issue. You are all using the same AppleID with iTunes, it sounds like. So I feel that automatic downloads are the culprit in this case. This article named iTunes Store: How to enable Automatic Downloads found here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4539 shows how to enable or disable the function by checking or unchecking the boxes.
    Open iTunes.
If you have not already, authorize your computer for use with your Apple ID by choosing Store > Authorize This Computer. See this article for information about iTunes Store authorization.
For Mac computers: Choose iTunes > Preferences and click the Store tab.
For Windows computers: Choose Edit > Preferences and click the Store tab.
You can enable Automatic Downloads2 for Music, Apps, or Books under "Automatic Downloads."
Also I was thinking that rather than each person going and deleting the songs they dont want from their respective user account, you could copy the itunes library from the individual user accounts on the computer they are organized correctly on, to the user accounts on the new computer. This article named iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer walks through how to do that, and offers different methods of copying the library over. It can be located here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527.
    Take care,
    Sterling

  • 2 iPod touches, one computer. How to keep music separate?

My daughter and I both have a ipod touch. When I sync I get her kid stuff on mine and I have to remove it, and she gets my adult stuff on hers and I have to remove it.
Can I create a profile for her and one for me so I can put kids stuff in her profile, adult stuff in mine, and some stuff in both?
If not is there an easier way to sync them?

  • HT1848 MY wife has an Iphone 4  and I have a 5. To date we haev used one apple is/account to manage music purchases. Recently we bought a Mac and created a new apple account for her. How do I synched her phone with new apple account?

MY wife has an Iphone 4  and I have a 5. To date we have used one apple account to manage music purchases/library. I updated ny phone to the new OS version and all her texting is showing up on my phone.  I understand if i create an apple account for her I will not see her texts. Recently we bought a Mac and created a new apple account for her. How do I synched her phone with new apple account and get access to the music library under my account on the new MAC laptop  before I update her phone to the new OS?
Going forward if I purchase music under my apple id and want her to have it on her device, how can I acheive that?

You can continue to share an Apple ID for purchases.
Sign her in to her new account here:
Settings > iCloud > Delete Account (Keep on Phone if you want to transfer contacts, calendars, etc...) then sign in with her new ID
Settings > Messages > Send & Receive > Apple ID > Sign out then in with new
Settings > FaceTime > Apple ID > Sign out then in with new
Use the same Apple ID here:
Settings > iTunes & App Stores > Apple ID

  • How do I keep music on my iPhone vs iCloud? (It keeps disappearing)

How do I keep music that I downloaded to my iPhone from disappearing after a period of time?  I recently purchased some music from iTunes on my iPhone (running iOS 8) and downloaded the music. A week or so later I went to play the music and found that it was no longer on the iPhone but could be downloaded from iCloud. However, I was driving in an area without sufficient wireless coverage - and that downloading would count against my monthly plan.  It had all been previously downloaded over WiFi.
It seems like Apple is trying to "help" me by taking music I haven't played for a bit and taking that off my phone to free up space... or something like that.
I have NOT synced my phone with iTunes in a long while, and someone suggested I need to do that and set up songs in playlists so that they stay on my iPhone. That just seems like a lot of work.
I just want to purchase music, download it, and have it stay on my iPhone!  Any ideas how I can stop the music from being removed?
    thank you!

The only reason music is removed is if the phone runs out of memory needed by some other function. Check your available memory; if it is very low that is what is happening.

  • My laptop had a virus and I am trying to sync my IPHONE 4 to my desktop, how can I sync my phone without losing all my music, apps and contacts?

You are talking about the menu bar of Itunes, right?
Yes. With iTunes open the menu bar is at the top of your screen.
where exactly is the Store/synck you iphone option?
After you authorize the computer connect your iPhone then follow the instructions here > iOS: How to transfer or sync content to your computer
When you are done transferring the data to the desktop, right or control click the iPhone under Devices left side of the iTunes window then click Back Up.
That way you will have a backup just in case you need to restore your iPhone.
