How to keep the same image quality after OCR ?

Hello, I have scanned a page of a book, it has mostly black text over white background. In order to keep a good visual quality and a low size for the file I chose the GIF format. The gif is 153.4KB, when I save it as PDF the file is 119KB and after OCR it is 224.2KB (however the resulting rich text is only 3.6KB).
How come the PDF is smaller than the GIF ? Is the GIF converted into a JPEG ?
How come after OCR the PDF is twice bigger while the added text is only a few KB ? Is the image converted again ?
I only want to keep my GIF as it is and OCR it.
Is it possible ? Even though in the "Convert to PDF" settings it says "There are no settings that can be edited in Conpuserve GIF"
If not, what other software could I use ? I have DEVONthink Pro but it also converts my GIF against my will.

Well I'd like to see that, because before optimizing a PDF you must save it and when you save it the image is converted.
Here is what I get with a 600DPI TIF converted to PDF. Notice the difference.
Because DPI (Dots per inch) density affects the quality of the OCR. The higher the dpi, the better looking and more reliable the OCR. The less DPI is , the poorer the quality, and less relaible the scan is. There are different settings under the Create PDF Using Scanner Those setting affect the Quality of the OCR.
Once the Document has been OCR'ed have you tried to save as a Word Document or as an RTF Document? Then sleceted all the text and choosen a Font (Arial for example) save as a word document. Then created a new PDF. It might clean up the look at the text.
I will leave the answer at this and let someone else try. I don't wish to get anyone upset.

Welcome to the forum. What you are referring to is a Freeze Frame.
Though I like John T's method (one that I use), you might want to look into Frame Hold, if it is in Pr 6.5. It works in a similar fashion, but I like the still for my Freeze Frames. Also, remember that you can adjust the Duration of the still, by click-dragging on the Tail, until it is as long as you need.

When I do goods return refer to the sales order. How can I keep the same cost (VPRS) 100 USD but not 90 USD?

Let me tell u my understanding of your requirement, after the sales the cost of the item is changed to some thing low than it was in sales order or invoice, in this scenario you need to transfer the cost of the material as it is in the sale order or invoice (which you are taking as reference to create a Return Order), am i right?
If so, you can proceed like this.
In the copy controls of Billing to Sales orders ( F2 to RE) we have the pricing type N assigned to it ( Transfer pricing components unchanged, New Cost) here the system is reading the change of the cost again from the material master. if you don' t want it to read the material master data again we can have a change try with pricing type 'D' (Copy Pricing elements unchanged), and try now.

How to keep the SAME position of layout on left & right pages when adding a page?

A little background first before I ask the question:
I've been converting a PowerPoint document to the InDesign format, and adding pages as I go through by duplicating a page in order to keep the top description text in the same position at the top left hand side. The document is over 110 pages- more pages will be added soon, and some pages deleted. Basically the presentation will be printed as a book, and the client we are designing this presentation for sent us the master pages for the layout.
The issue I'm now having: I had to delete an odd number of pages which caused a shift of the layout of pages throughout the document after the pages I deleted. I figured that the right hand page was not aligned the same as the right hand page, so I measured in the same distance from the left edge on both pages and made the adjustments. But then when I added a page, the alignment shifted again.
Is this an issue with the master pages? Or is this another issue? Any idea how to fix this so that the pages are aligned the same whether I add or delete a page? I've included two screen grabs to better illustrate what is happening:

Those are your margin guides, and your client evidently expects the margins to be larger on the outside of the page than at the spine. Putting the text frame that says Main Building... on the master page will not only save you having to enter it each time, but will let you put it where it should be and have it stay there when pages switch sides. Your images are going to seem to shift, too, unless they are centered on the page on the horizontal axis.
I'm sensing you really have little or no experience using ID, and some basic training would probably help you quite a bit. I'll recommend Sandee Cohen's Visual Quickstart Guide to InDesign -- best book out there for beginners.

How to keep the original imovie quality as much as possible?

I've completed an iMovie project which lasts a few minutes short of one hour. The size of the iMovie project is 12Gig.
I want to burn this to a dual layered DVD using iDVD, and at the same time maintain as little compression as possible, keeping the quality has high as possible.
What is the best way to do this? Because when I export the iMovie file to iDVD using the create iDVD Project, and set my iDVD prefs to "Best Quality", and my "Media Type" to 8Gig (Double Layer) I end up with an iDVD project file of 3.39Gig.
How is it possible to create a DVD from the 12Gig iMovie file which, when compressed, will be larger than 3Gig, so as to use most of the disk space on an 8Gig disk.
It seems that the only two encoded settings I can alter are for "Best Quality" and "Best Performance". I was hoping to get at least 6-7Gig, thereby only compressing the original movie by half, instead it's compressed it down to a quarter of the original size. Judging the original movie against the DVD version on a TV screen reveals a noticeable amount of quality loss. Is there anything that I can do to force iDVD to not compress the file this much??

Sorry, the video content must be compressed to a certain level to be playable in DVD players - it's a matter of the bit-rate that DVD players can handle.
iDVD's 'Best Performance' produces a disk with about as high a bit-rate that players can handle. Because MPG-2 compression works on frame to frame differences, to maximize your DVD quality do things like place your camera on a tripod and make sure there is plenty of light.

I have a large jpeg image map for a hundred pages. The jpegs are all the same except I changed the city name for each one.
So for each corresponding htm page, the 4-5 links out are the same.
Waht is the trick to not have to create by hand hotspots? thanks.

Here is my new version of Murrays writing, easiest way I think:
You open up a pre-existing html, say Chicago. Then drag over with pointer to the new jpeg you want (Buffalo). It replaces Chicago with the buffalo jpeg, all links work perfectly. Then do a save as called Buffalo.

I am using time/date based rolling appender for the jboss log. but I found the server.log file will be updated with new log message after I restart the jboss server. therefore all of the message before jboss restarting are gone. is that a way I can keep the lasted log message that is just before jboss restart.

Don't know about any jboss options, you could always create a bat or sh file that renames the existing log before starting jboss.

I'm getting ORA-31085 error when try to register the same schema with same URl.
My requirement is that I should be able to reregister the same schema with the same URL .
I'm using the following function :

But its not happening as of now instead the ORA-31085 is thrown second time.
Plz provide pointers to solve the issue.

Hi Experts,
If I remove the plant from the shipping tab in the contract item (the contract type is WV), I will be able to enter the WBS or Order in accounting assignment tab. However, if I enter the plant (in order to determine the tax in pricing), the WBS and Order are disappered and there is one new settlement rule button showed up.
Do you know any configuration could keep the WBS and order in the accounting assigment tab even the plant is there.

Thanks for your answer. However, I even added the plant in the WBS, the tax (we use tax jurisdiction) still could not be determined.
The problem is that SAP changes the account assignment tab screen (it suppresses the WBS and Order fields, but addes settlement rule) with the plant in the shipping tab. Do you know how to keep the same account assignment tab screen with the plant in the shipping tab?

How to keep the quality of an photo I import onto my ipad2?

I'm going travelling for a couple of weeks next month, I have a Canon EOS 450D camera that I wish to take with me, and my 32gb Ipad 2.
I have a camera connection kit also, and plan to copy my images from the camera to the ipad for safe storage on a regular basis. (mainly incase the camera gets stolen!!)
I've copied pictures over before and noticed that the quality reduces significantly. Does anyone know how to maintain the same quality/size picture?
Also im guessing the 32gb should be fine to hold quite a number of pictures??
Would anyone recomend doing anything else???

The camera connection kit doesn't reduce quality, it keeps the photo's size, quality and Exif info intact - photos that you sync from a computer via iTunes are 'optimised' by the syncing process, but the kit doesn't alter them. You can then copy them to your computer : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083
After you've copied the photos to the iPad I would still keep them on the cards as a separate backup.

How can I make different catalogs from the same image where that image has been changed in some way between the catalogs. For instance if I wanted to have a catalogs for cropped images and have 3 catalogs one for 4x6 , 5x7 and 8x10 cropping. When I tried this , if I changed a file in one catalog that same image in the other would change also.

Do not confuse the creation of the crops and the display in collections per crop ratio.
Of course one virtual copy (VC) per crop ratio is needed. If the same image should be cropped in all 3 mentioned ratios there would be 3 VCs.
The OP asked how to have/see a set of same-crop-ratios.
After having created the virtual copies for whatever crop ratio he wants, the way to display this result in the fashion asked for is via smart collections, provided they can be found. Without a plugin the naming of the VC with the crop ratio applied is a straight way to achieve that.
IF the wish is to get new crops automatically added. (See my answers 2+3)
IF the wish is to creat static collections per crop ratio for a certain set of images, I'd go as follows:
1. Select all images you want to have cropped in that way,.
2. With this selection click on the + to add another collection and fill the dialog box like this:
Then navigate into this newly created selection and perform the 4x6 crop - according to taste individually or by synchronizing the first crop.
