How to keep unplugged macbook awake with lid closed

My macbook would stay awake while its plugged in with its lid closed, but it won't stay awake once its unplugged.
any suggestions?
thx!

Requirements for closed display mode:
Power adapter
External keyboard, mouse, or trackpad
External display
If any of these conditions are missing, then the closed MBA will sleep. So, unplugging the power will sleep the system.

  • Keeping my macbook awake with an external monitor

So, I just hooked up my 15" macbook pro to my Samsung LCD using the mini display/port to HDMI adapter which in and of itself has resulted in some resolution problems, although that's something for another day. My big issue currently is that I'd like to go ahead and keep my macbook closed up so that I'm not putting any unnecessary wear and tear on the monitor, and to keep down the power usage. However, no matter what I do, whenever I close up the macbook the thing automatically goes to sleep after about a minute, regardless of whether I have it connected to an external power source or am actually in the middle of doing anything. Anybody have any advice?

I actually found that guide first and followed all of the steps and it still just automatically goes to sleep, despite being connected to an external power source. And clicking or using the keyboard doesn't work either. It'll stay on for about a minute after I close it up and then it just goes to sleep. I was actually in the middle of typing this post and it happened. Is there a setting somewhere I need to track down?

  • How to work on external monitor with lid closed?

I have an external monitor connected to my MB Pro and would like to work with the lid closed. When I shut it, the monitor also goes to sleep. Yesterday I did something right and the monitor woke but I was able to keep the computer closed. Today it's not working. I use a wireless keyboard that also goes to sleep when the lid closes.
What's the procedure to keep the monitor awake while the laptop is closed?
    System 10.6.8

Yes, I have done that and tried it over and over and it still won't work. The monitor went on for a few seconds and then went black again.
Is it possible to do this with a wireless keyboard? I do press the power key to try to wake to keyboard but nothing happens.

  • ARD access to Macbooks asleep with lids closed?

Some people say you can operate a Macbook with the lid closed, some say you can't. Can anyone answer this one please? In school there is a storage trolley full of PC laptops (Vaios I think, but not sure) and the network administrator is able to update software and do other admin tasks on them over the school network without taking them all out and opening them. Apparently they will wake up if he accesses them and go to sleep again when he's finished. We've been trying to do the same will a trolley full of Macbooks and Apple Remote Desktop, but they just won't wake up, so he's having to take all 16 of them out of the trolley and open them which is terrible. Can it be done? Over Airport, preferrably, but we do have ethernet in the trolley if neccessary.

Well, this is all built into ARD. If you open the admin guide at http://images.apple.com/remotedesktop/pdf/AdministratorsGuide20061116.pdf
and turn to page 140, it goes over how to wake a sleeping Mac.
    To wake a computer:
1 Select a computer list in the Remote Desktop window.
2 Select one or more computers from the list with a current status of “Sleeping,” or
    “Offline.”
    3 Choose Manage > Wake.
    4 Click Wake.
Then, of course, you can administer it with all the functionality of ARD. Note, I'm assuming the Macs are sleeping, not completely shut off.
It seems pretty straightforward, so perhaps I misunderstood.

  • Running macbook pro with lid closed

    Hi all,
I want to run the Macbook Pro with the lid closed, like maybe when I'm downloading a file or using it as a desktop with an external screen.
I have insomniaX, however I am concerned about heat.
The vent in the back seems to put out as much air as it does with the lip opened.
    Any insight on this?
    tia
edit: oh yea I have an early '09 mac book pro; 15" if it matters

If you use InsomniaX, you should certainly be concerned about heat. I recommend trashing InsomniaX, because it enables you to abuse your MBP in a way that Apple intended to make impossible.
To use the machine with its display closed as it was designed to be used, follow the instructions in this article:

  • Turn on MacBook Pro with lid closed?

    Hello!
I have a 2012 rMBP connected to a Dell U2713hm monitor with a wired USB keyboard and a Magic Trackpad.  I usually run the rMBP with the lid closed in a twelvesouth vertical stand.
Most of the time I just let the rMBP sleep when I am not using partially because it is a pain to turn it on by taking it out of the stand, opening it up, turning it on, and then closing the clamshell again.
Is there any way for me to boot my rMBP with this setup (or some other related setup) while the laptop remains closed?
    Thanks!

I don't think there's any way to turn it on with the lid closed. What's wrong with just letting it sleep? I almost never turn mine off completely.

  • Stay "awake" with lid closed and no ext. display?

I am using my MacBook Pro to stream audio from an internet radio site. The computer's audio output is wired into my home stereo system. It all works great but is there a way I can close the lid without the computer going to sleep ? There is no external keyboard, mouse or display connected.
    Thanx

That's one of the cool things... the display sleeps "normally" but the computer does not. I've been monitoring it for the last couple of hours and it's not even getting close to hot. Thanx for the heads up tho...

  • MBP Randomly Wakes Up With Lid Closed

    Hi,
My Macbook Pro (OS 10.4.11) always randomly wakes up by itself after I closed the display lid. Is there anything I can do to remedy this? Thanks.

I get this too and it is really really annoying. Then, when I open the lid to try to put it to sleep again, it goes to sleep, so now it's doing the opposite: asleep with lid open and awake with lid closed. The real problem is that I can't wake it up! The other annoying thing is that with the lid closed some of my bluetooth devices i.e. wireless keyboard and mouse wake it up. Solutions?

  • How to keep the MB powered on with Lid closed

How to keep the MB powered on with Lid closed and no monitor connected?

You can't. And you shouldn't due to heating issues.
There are however 'hacks' that allow you to bypass
    this.

This may be true of overheating, but ONLY in the iBooks and very old laptops, if you think about it what is the difference between native clamshell mode (Using the monitor/keyboard etc) and the hacked clamshell mode? does plugging a screen in to the laptop some how create more ventilation :S
This rumor is really really wrong, and as stated only affected the old machines which were not capable of native clamshell mode, but of course we keep the warnings there because we dont want to be sued if some idiot places it in there laptop bag while rendering a movie.
PS. If anyone can give me evidence to prove otherwise i will add it to the investigation that im slowly compiling to "bust" this annoying myth

How to connect my macbook air with thunderbolt to tv via hdmi?

With this adapter. You will also need an HDMI cable.
The Thunderbolt port doubles as a mini DisplayPort on the MBA.

Nobody in these forums represents Apple or any store.  In order to try to buy something, you must contact the stores directly yourself.
I have heard that retail stores may be able to place a special order for what you want.

  • Macbook sleep wake up with lid closed

Hi everybody. Since 10.9 I had a strange issue with sleep on my MBP 15. If I put it in sleep with the button and I close the lid, it will wake up closed waiting for the password.
Also, if it is in sleep while charging, or charged, and I plug off the magsafe, it will wake up again....even with lid closed.
Already resetted PRAM, SMC, all the basics, any idea?
    Thnx in advance

  • Can iTunes play with lid closed?

I am a newbie, so please excuse me if this sounds like a dumb question. I just moved from Windows world (after using it for 25 years) to MacBook Pro about 4 months ago.
I am using AiportExpress to stream music from iTunes to 3 different audio system throught my home. I would like play iTunes to play the music even when my MacBook lid is closed. I can't seem to get this work. Seems like such a basic function. Is it possible to play iTunes with lid closed? What am I missing?

    {quote:title=Chris CA wrote:}If Apple were to allow it with a setting and the user burned up the computer, then it would have to be covered under warranty, which it isn't.{quote}
Don't mean to argue.. but I still believe that it should be a user enabled/disabled function. I've used it on all my PCs for several years (when playing CD on Windows Media Player) and I am yet to BURN a single device
If I have to keep the MacBook open to keep running iTunes, wouldn't I run the same risk of BURNING (like you said)?
OK.. this is what I need to do...
I have all my music in iTunes. I have setup 3 AirportExpress (AirTunes) hooked up to receivers on 3 levels on my home. I'd like to play the music from iTunes (wirelessly streaming throughout the house via AirTunes) without having to keep the MacBook open. How do I do it?
I don't want to see any third party apps (e.g. Insomnia) to prevent my computer from going to sleep. I just want to accomplish what I described above. Can this be done or not?
Another question is if the iTunes is running on one of my Windows-based laptops, and I close the lid on that, iTunes (on PC) should continue to run. Right?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • Odd behavior: empty optical drive makes eject sound with lid closed

Anyone heard of this? I've got a black MacBook (2.0Ghz) w/ Leopard. Laptop is plugged into outlet with lid closed & no disk in the optical drive. Every 2 minutes or so I can hear the eject sound like when you push the eject button.
    Any clues or suggestions?

I have had this problem for a couple of months. I took it into to be looked at by someone at the Apple store and they couldn't replicate the problem. It happens continuously now and drives me crazy. I took a video of it and posted it on youtube. Take a look and tell me if this is what you are experiencing, or if you have any ideas on what is happening or how to stop it. I plan on taking it to the Apple store this weekend if it is still doing this (which I am sure it is)
