How to keep window always on top?

I use afloat to keep most of the window always on top but it doesn't work for some apps like excel, textwrangler etc...
How can I make excel, textwrangler etc.. to stay on top even if I focus on some other apps?

AFAIK, you can't. When you change focus the app assumes you want to use it.

This is working fine whenever I start application. But problem is, if I go to full screen and come back, ontop flag is unset.

This is working partially. ie, VLC is keeping ontop propery, but video is not going full screen.

Windows "Always on Top"

I am trying to get a window to "always remain on top" or float above all windows, regardless of where I click. For example, if you zoom Itunes into a smaller window, it always floats above all windows. How do I do this with other windows? It helps when working on multiple applications to keep a source document in a window "always on top" and prevented from being hidden.

Is it possible that my panels in CS3 were always floating, allowing me to prevent them from being covered? I'm just thinking that it seems odd that panels could be covered at all. You loose a lot of editing abilities when one can't see them!

Dragging Document Windows - (Always On Top)?

A few times, I've dragged a document window over(on top of) a set of panels (layers,channels, etc). Once I let go of the mouse, the title bar of that window (the draggable bar) is placed behind the panels (I'm in standard screen mode). Most of the time this isn't an issue, and probably because I've never dragged a small enough document window over a panel set for this to be an issue worth asking about (all times before, the document window was wide enough to extend out behind the panel(s), so I was still able to click on the title bar. So, after moving this small window and letting go of the mouse, the title bar is completely hidden behind the panel. I know I can move the panels around and/or minimize the panels, but I'm wondering if there is a setting where you can have your document windows (always on top) of other panels?

If you loose a window behind your panels just hit the tab key which hides all tool bars and panels, drag out your window and hit tab key to make your tools/panels visible again. Panels will always be on top of windows.

How to keep new applications on top within windows 8.1 desktop

In previous Window versions when one opened applications such as word, excel or browser or snipping tool these applications stayed on top.
However, in windows 8.1 now when ne application is openned, one needs to minize other applications before starting to use it. This is very non productive use of time and prevents swtiching between dpendent application, open version of documents, and
images.
Please provide suggestions how to configure the system to enable latest application on top.

Based on my knowledge, you can keep new applications on top of all other windows on your desktop, even while you're working in other programs.
I would like to suggest you restoring healthy by using this command: dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth first.

Why the office windows always on top of others - how to change it back?!!

I'm using mac os x and office 2011.
Since maybe couple weeks ago (maybe after one of the office upgrades?), when I have multiple office windows opened (e.g., multiple word documents, excel, powerpoint), these windows always appear on top of others (e.g., safari, calendar) first!
Here is an example: now i'm using safari, so it's my active window. If I want to go to calendar (which is already opened), when I click the calendar window, all the office windows (which are opened as well) will jump out first!! Then I have to click the calendar again to make it become on top of the office windows. That means, whenever I want to switch to other windows while office windows are opened, I have to click all the other windows twice, because the first time I click on any other type of window, the office windows will jump out no matter what.
This is very annoying after a while. I'm not sure if I explained this clear enough. But how can I change the settings so the office windows can just not always on top of other windows??!!

Yes, I can view/hide the OSK with no problem but the keyboard, itself, changed somehow.

How to keep window "floating" in front

I used to know the trick, but have forgotten. How do I keep a window "floating" on top??

One way is to browse your iTunes Music Library in the Finder and open the video file with QuickTime instead of playing it in iTunes. Then you have always-on-top and also fixes the "full screen on 2nd monitor" problem. Maybe not ideal, but a workaround.

I was wondering if anyone knew how to make a window "Stay on top"
Sometimes when you are copying information from one window to the next you would like one "primary data entry window" stay on top, and a secondary window not overshadow the first when made active. This way you only see the part of the window that you are interested in copying.
Some programs like skype allow you to have the option as "always on top", but I was wondering if Tiger had the same feature for it's windows?
The other way around this problem is to re-size the secondary window, but I was hoping someone could tell me a way to keep a designated window as "always on top"

I think perhaps, that the closest you'll get to it, is by using the 'New Tab'
feature in File, where you can have several windows with quick access available while browsing.

How to make QuickTime "Always on Top"

Was browsing the Discussions trying to figure out how to make QuickTime 7.1.3 "Always on Top" on Windows XP, but judging by the unresolved threads I gather Apple forgot to include that option.
Anyway, I've just discovered a free download that allows you to get around this problem: HELDUP. It creates a tray icon that you can click and drag onto QT (or any open program) to make it topmost/always on top.

Firefox windows, always on top ?

Since my upgrade to Leopard my browser windows are always on top, even when I open the dashboard widgets. So I can't see half of them.
The window will be grey [inactive] but refuses to disappear to the background and make room for my desktop or whatever window I want to see. Only minimize will make it disappear. Firefox has been updated to the latest version, so that is not the problem.
Anybody ?

I've been having this problem for the last few days and it's driving me insane. I read that if you disable the 'show downloads window' in the preferences, the problem seems to go away. This is not the case for me. I have restarted, etc. but the dang thing keeps doing it and I can't figure out the trigger.
Any other ideas? I'm seriously considering switching to the 3 Beta, but I don't want to lose the few add-ons I use.

Mac File Site window always on top

I am using Dreamweaver 8.0, but have seen this exact same
issue on a Windows CS3 install and a Mac CS3 install.
I like to have the Files Window detached from the right side,
and expanded so I can see the Remote Site and Local Files lists
side by side. When I open an html file, I expect the html file to
open on top of the file list window. It works this way on some
installs, but not on others, very annoying. In the problem
installs, I must manually move the file (site) window way down to
the right to expose the html file I want to work on. Then when I
want open another html file, I have to drag it file window back up,
to see my file list, double click on the file, and then move the
file list back out of the way.
In other words, in the problem setups, the File Window is
"always on top", so it must be a preference or setting, but I
cannot figure out.
Please help me fix this annoying problem.

I'm having the exact same problem in DW CS5 now. Did you find a solution? Hitting fn+F8 isn't going to work on my iMac extended keyboard. F8 is the iTunes play pause button. Besides, having to command-tab to an app THEN hit fn+F8 just isn't going to work obviously.
I can't believe in 2010 this is broken.
Please do let me know if you found a way around it. I tried all the different layout prefabs in CS5, and without exception they all do it.

How to keep windows unhidden on same Space?

I use four Spaces on my Macbook. Sometimes when I'm closing a program, it's confirmation or some other modal window will create in a different Space and hide behind all windows there. For example, I close Adobe Premiere in Space 1 but it prompts to save the project. All I see is that Premiere doesn't want to close. I click Premiere and get the bump system sound. Nothing. I have to force quit.
Now I've learned that those little confirmation windows are appearing in other Spaces. For the above example, the confirm save window is in Space 4 under all the windows there. This doesn't just happen with Premiere. Lots of other programs will do this. It doesn't happen all the time but often enough.
Is there a way to "Keep windows grouped" or something that will prevent them from slipping off into another desktop instance?

this shouldn't happen but the responsibility for that lies with particular applications in question. there is no general system setting you can adjust. complain to program developers. some apps have poor spaces integration.
the only option you can choose on the system level is to assign an app to all spaces. but I don't know if you want to do that.

How to keep figures at the top of the page.

I have three figures which I have draw with Drawing tools.
The first figure I want to keep always in the middle of my first page.
Second figure I want to keep always on the top of my second page.
Third figure I want to keep always on to of my third page.
There position should not change even if I add few more paragraphs just before my first figure. How do I say OpenOfifice to keep the figure in place for me? I can do that in Latex. However, I am newbee in OpenOfifice .
