How to kill a backup that's frozen?

I have a 500 GB external drive and a 233 GB capacity internal drive that only has about 125 GB of space used. I have lately been having problems with Time Machine freezing up part way through a backup. Even when I select Stop Backing Up from the Time Machine menu it will not kill the backup. I simply get a message saying "Stopping Backup". However, it never stops and this message never changes. I have erased and reformatted my external drive, but I still seem to be getting this problem.
Any advice would be deeply appreciated.

The Time Machine disk is a Western Digital external drive that is at most, 2 years old.
It may still be the drive; they are mechanical beasts, after all, with tiny bearings and moving parts. If it won't spin up quickly enough at the right time, OSX may be stuck trying to talk to it.
And some WD's have a built-in sleep or "spin down" mode that sometimes interferes with TM backups: http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/stdadp.php?pfaqid=1376
Do you have another disk you can try, even temporarily?
Also try deselecting the +Put the hard disk(s) to sleep . . .+ option in +System Preferences > Energy Saver+ temporarily. Some externals respond to that setting, some don't.
I had previously been backing up just fine, and did so for a year and half with no problems. Interestingly, I started having these issues around the end of October, around the same time that I started having problems with the machine freezing up when I tried to log out.
They may be related -- did you ever solve that?
Try running the +Apple Hardware Test.+ It's on one of the disc(s) that came with your Mac, and is tailored to it's particular hardware. The disk should have +Apple Hardware Test+ and instructions for running it printed in very tiny type.
Also try the (free) Rember, a heavy-duty memory tester, from: http://www.kelleycomputing.net/
Any chance this could be related to the fact that I no longer have any of my other backups? When I reformatted my external drive
Doubtful, but if so, a "full reset" of Time Machine, per #A4 of [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum), will fix it.

    On your computer:
In iTunes go to Edit/Preferences/Devices and you'll see a list of all backups on your computer. Click on the ones you would like to delete.
    On your phone:
In case you are backing up to iCloud, go to Settings/iCloud/Storage and Backup/Manage Storage/Backups/ tap on the device and scroll down to the bottom of the page and hit "delete backup"

    Hi Laiwin,
What did you delete? Did you by any chance delete anything out of the /Library or /System folder off the root level of the drive? Probably the best option is startup the computer and then immediately hit Command + V. This will boot into Verbos mode. When does the boot process stop? What does it say? This will help tell us where it is failing in the boot process.

  • Is there a way to undo a backup that overwrote a previous backup on itunes?

I recently restored my iphone due to some complications, everything was going good. I forgot my encrypt backup password and had to restore as a new iphone. I was planning on restoring it again once i remembered my password however itunes backed the new iphone up, replacing the old back up. I was wondering if i could some how undo the newest backup that was on my itunes and get back to the old one.  Also is there a way to unencrypt the password for the backup?
This is for itunes windows xp

De-encrypting isn't possible, you have to have the original password.
A little trick is to make a backup copy of the backup, by adding something like a number to the name of the extra copy yoiu make, then if necessary you can rename the latest backup, change the older backup to a current name and the system will be fooled into thinking you are using the latest version.  If you do that, keep track of what you are doing with the backup names so you can keep them straight.  Making an extra copy of a backup, stored in a different folder, helps for the occasion of forgeting a password and needing a good copy to use when doing a complete restore.

  • How can I restore my iphone to a backup that's not listed in the drop down menu

I updated my iphone and everything was removed. I attempted to restore it however the only backups that are available when I have the iphone logged into itunes is the one from today. How can I apply an older backup say 1 to 2 days ago to the drop down menu of the restore button? Right now the only thing that's showing up is the one for today and that's abslolutely not the one I want or need. And before the question is asked no I didn't save it to icloud.

iTunes only keeps one normal backup, per device. Thus, there are no previous backups from 1 or 2 days ago unless you restored your phone & backed up before you restored. Restore point backups are time/date stamped & are not overwritten.

Delete some apps, files, photos, videos, movies, etc to free up some space.

How Do I Get Rid Of The “Other” Data Stored On My iPad Or iPhone?
    http://tinyurl.com/85w6xwn
With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5/6, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

    Hi MrsMoosie,
I'm sorry to hear you are having these issues with your iPad. If your iPad isn't responding or doesn't appear to be charging, you may find the information and troubleshooting steps outlined in the following articles helpful, in particular the following portion:
If you don't see the charging screen within an hour, or you see the connect to power screen, check your connector, USB cable, and power adapter. Make sure that everything is plugged in firmly, free of debris, and not damaged. You might want to try a different USB cable or power adapter.
