How to Kill an App?

I've come across this problem a couple of times and my only way out was to turn off the phone, then switch back on...
Problem: some apps work in landscape mode and don't seem to respect the gestures as they should. The last example is 'Mahjong Legends', which I've used happily on my PlayBook. I saw that it was available in the Blackberry World list on the Z10 (evidently, it was listing apps I've downloaded for the PlayBook that we assume are also compatible with the Z10), so I downloaded it. All was good as it started... right away in landscape mode. The game plays, but there is no 'quit' option in the app menu. And swiping from any edge did absolutely nothing. No way to get out of the app that I could see.
Is there a trick to this, or is it a bug?
A follow-up question... should the swipes rotate with viewing mode (landscape/portrait)? Perhaps my Otter Box is interfering with the bezels on the long edges, but I seem to get locked into landscape mode once in a while...
Solved!
Go to Solution.

Removing the case absolutely did solve the problem. I was confronted with the problem in two different circumstances.
The first was 'Mahjong Legends', which opens in landscape mode and doesn't rotate to portrait. I had zero luck swiping the bottom of the landscape mode to minimize the app for closing. Removing the case solved this and I can swipe up from the bottom of the long portrait edge to shut it down.
The second was the web browser, in landscape mode. I eventually did manage to minimize it while in landscape mode, but it took several trys and significant pressure from the edge of the case onto the screen. Too much to be usable in my opinion. I could rotate to portrait to make the upward swipe work, but I shouldn't need to. Without the case, the phone just works as it should, and feels much more like my PlayBook.
I saw a comment somewhere about the protective screen portion of the Otterbox causing trouble. Some have cut it off. I didn't try that as I wanted to return it... ;-) but it might be at least a partial solution for some who can't NOT use that box!
Knowing what I do today, I'll be very fussy with my case selection. I put a screen protector film (are those over-priced or what?!) on it for the moment and will watch to see what comes on the market. I like the BB holster, but it doesn't seem to be large enough to allow any sort of skin. Roots is evidently coming out with something similar to the Otterbox which I'll look at, but who knows...

• How to kill an app which hangs

How to kill an app which hangs or takes a long time to load?
As an example I opened the IE, choose settings --> delete history
the status is: 'Deleting browsing history' for the last 20 minutes and I don't really know how to kill the IE or restart it? The back button doesn't work in this case.
same happens with other apps, like games when there's a limited internet access. Apps may try to load and the back button doesn't work in this case.

It's not that there's no response, cos I can switch apps and other apps respnd. It's just that a specific app hangs (or loads data or whatever) which takes too long for me to wait for and I'd like to kill it.
So the question is - if the phone is generally responsive but one app in the background needs to be killed, can I somehow do this not rebooting the whole device?
edit: just to add: the back button while hold get's me to the app list and I can switch apps and work with others.

If the process chain is running in background,
goto SM37
Give * in the jobname
Give the username who scheduled the process chain
Job status - check the check boxes - SCHED, relased, ready, active
click execute.
It displays all the process chains that, scheduled & running.
You can select the process chain that need to be stopped & click STOP active job or ctrl+F1.

I updated to new ios7 and now I'm not able to kill apps like in the earlier version of ios6.
Also, is there an app that automatically kills apps in the background after a while.

Double-click the Home button to bring up the app screen, then swipe upwards on the app.

None I know of. I don't believe that the software development kit would allow someone to write such an app.

• How to kill iCloud password popup on Mac start up?

iCloud password is asked every time I reboot my mac. Can't turn it off. It makes me crazy! How to kill this popup? MacBook Pro Yosemite OS X 10.10.2 (14C109)

Good Afternoon vonnavi,
If you are repeatedly being asked to enter your iCloud password on your Mac, try these steps to resolve the issue:
iCloud: Account troubleshooting - Apple Support
http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203512
Go to My Apple ID (appleid.apple.com), click “Manage your Apple ID,” and try to sign in with your Apple ID. If you are unable to sign in, follow the steps provided there to reset your Apple ID account password.
I receive a “failed user name or password” alert when attempting to sign in at iCloud.com, in iCloud preferences (Mac), or in the iCloud Control Panel (PC).
Make sure that you're entering your entire Apple ID when you sign in (for example, if your Apple ID is [email protected], make sure that you aren't trying to sign in with just “username”).
Verify that the Caps Lock key is not enabled. All passwords are case sensitive.
Make sure that you're using the correct iCloud-associated Apple ID and not a different Apple ID used for other services. For more information about having more than one Apple ID, refer to Using your Apple ID for Apple services.
If needed, reset your Apple ID password at iforgot.apple.com.
If you use the same Apple ID for iCloud as you do for other Apple Services, (for example, Apple Online Store, iTunes Store, or Mac App Store), changing your iCloud account password also changes your password for the other Apple services. Make sure that you sign in to those services using your new password. Also, be sure to update your Apple ID password on all of your devices and computers that may use your Apple ID (such as any email applications that you use to receive iCloud email).
I can't sign in to iCloud on my Mac due to an alert stating that my email address has not been verified.
If you can't sign in due to the alert “Account not verified - Check your email for instructions for verifying your account”:
Close and reopen iCloud preferences before attempting to sign in to iCloud again.
If that does not resolve the issue, check your email folder and Junk folder for a verification email sent from Apple.
If there is no verification email in your email folder or Junk folder, click the Resend Verification Email button in iCloud preferences.
Hope this helps ...

• How to kill aprocess

Hi,
could anybody tell me how to kill a process which is runnuing on unix OS.
actually I have an RMI server, and I want to write an applet or some thing simillar to stop this server.
So I need to know it is pid on the server to kill it.
Any body has an idea??

• How to tell what apps are "running" in multitasking pane?

My understanding of how the ipad works is that when one presses the home button, the open app closes. However, when multitasking using the bar, how does one determine which apps are actively running versus which apps are simply displayed as part of the recently used apps list? I often have multiple safari windows plus a few apps open at one time. (I know I can view the safari windows by hitting the "windows" icon on the menu bar.
I'd like to be able to conserve battery life by killing background apps when necessary. But there is no "task pane" to see what's open at any given time.
Any help appreciated,

No, when one presses the home button the open app does not necessarily close if it is capable of multitasking (for example Pandors radio).
The recent apps bar is really for selecting among recent apps. That is to say it is a way to switch between apps without having to go to the app screens to find the app.
Note only a subset of apps are actually capable of multitasking and these are rather obvious when they are running. There is an indicator to the left of the battery level indicator which indicates this (>).
Let me give an example. I just opened an app called My First Puzzle Toys. From the app home screen there is no close or exit option. With the app open, if I touch the home button on the bottom of the bezel, does this close it? Or is it still running? Similarly, if I double click the home button and choose Safari from the list, are both then running? Another example: I just double clicked the home button and launched Labryinth. The game's home screen has no exit choice. If I double click the home button and choose Safari, is Labrynith still running?
Maybe I just don't understand how this os works. Do apps not use memory if they are not actively shown on the screen?

• How to kill EPMA Deployment

Hi,
I have EPMA 11.1.1.3 and after making some changes in account and location dimensions i started deploying the app.It was initialed at around 6pm..i informed by client that it usaully takes aroung 6 and half hours to complete the deployment but after 8 hours i checked the Job its still it was going on and it might have hung up at 6%..Main thing all the changes have been reflectd in Hyperion Planning...So my question is how to kill this job running on?
Thanks in advance.
Pranav

So my question is how to kill this job running on?^^^I thought I was going to hear "Nuke it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure" EPMA can be Alien-like.
it usaully takes aroung 6 and half hours to complete the deployment but after 8 hours ^^^Really? That's amazing. I suspect you are forcing a dense restructure this time so that might be part of the issue. Has the Essbase restructure happened yet?
I would be unbelievably suspicious/completely unaccepting of any metadata build that took 6 hours. There has to be a better way.

• How to kill back ground processes?

I had installed Amonitor app and it shows there are these 3 processes, poc-bbot, bash, cp running. It was never there. can anyone tell me how to kill it?

Hi, thanks.
Actually these 3 processes has never shows up. And yes, i was kill all the apps once i dont use them. my recently open bar is always empty.
The reason why i has concern is my bat life is shorter when these 3 processes are running. It used to has this, so i restore to factory mode. then after awhile, these came back.

• How to restore an app to recently used app bar after deleting it from bar?

I frequently have to kill an app (GPS Drive) in order to get it to work properly alongside another app (HiDef Radio). Reason being: When I use the two apps at the same time, the HiDef Radio frequently renders the live voice guidance on GPS Drive inoperable. A customer support representative for GPS Drive advised me to kill GPS Drive, using the recently used apps bar, and re-open it when this happens. (The representative also said that they just submitted a new version of GPS Drive to Apple, which should hopefully fix this problem, but in the meantime, I'm stuck not being able to listen to the radio and use live voice guidance at the same time.)
To kill GPS Drive, I followed the instructions in the iPhone 4.1 manual:
"Remove an app from the recents list: Touch and hold the app icon until it begins to jiggle, then tap [the red minus]."
The manual then states, "The app is added to recent apps again the next time you open it."
Problem is, contrary to what the manual says, GPS Drive is not added to recent apps again the next time I open it. And since it's not added back to the recent apps bar, I can't kill it next time I have this conflict with HiDef Radio. So the problem remains.
Is this—the fact that the app is not added to recent apps again the next time I open it—some sort of bug? (And, if so, is the bug Apple's, or GPS Drive's?) Or am I missing something? (And, if so, how do I make the app re-appear in the recently used apps bar after removing it from said bar?)
If anyone is wondering how I know that removing an app from the recently used apps bar kills it, see this, from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4211 :
"If you experience issues with applications that use multitasking, try these steps to troubleshoot:
"1. Check the App Store to verify the application supports multitasking. You can also check the developer's webpage.
"2. Close the application and reopen it:
" 1. Double-click the Home button to load recently used apps:
" 2. Select the application by tapping and holding on the application until the red minus appears:
" 3. Tap the red minus to quit the application. This also removes an application from recently used apps."
Thanks in advance for your help.

I just discovered the answer to my question. Apparently, when you're in an app, that app does not appear in the recently used apps bar. This is logical in one sense: You can't switch to an app that you're already in. However, in another sense, it is illogical: In most operating systems, when you want to kill an app, you can kill the app without exiting the app (which is necessary in cases in which a freeze prevents you from exiting the app) by using a keystroke or directly entering a task manager. Given that the recently used apps bar serves two purposes—fast app switching and killing problematic apps—what makes sense for one purpose doesn't make sense for the other purpose. Anyway, the moral of the story is this: If you want to kill an app using iOS 4, you have to exit it first. Problem solved.

• How to buy/install app on iPhone 4s 8.1

I have never been able to understand my I-Phone! It's going to kill me with aggravation, and they'll never find the murder weapon!
How will I go about installing Pages on my I-Phone?
If I click on APPS, there are too many choices including "white pages". None appear to be the pages I have on my I-Mac.
If I plug my I-Phone into the I-Mac / I-Tunes, I don't know how to find the app store. Nothing seems to work.
Thanks!

Thanks, Liz:
I was dragged kicking and screaming into getting an I-Phone last Feb. because several clients text me. Up until then, I was perfectly happy with my flip-phone!
I have been on computers since 1967. Yes, 1967. The realization has finally washed over me that technology is outstripping my need for it. So I have resigned myself to using I-Phone for telephoning, texting, an occasional GPS, and a small amount of Internet. That's it. No streaming, photos, music, games, or nonsensical apps.
Lessons at Verizon and Apple just cover the basics. I have gotten more info from Youtube and Apple Communities.
The party will just have to pass me by!
Thanks for your help!
