How to kill open PDF's when installing?

I have several hundred computers that currently have reader 9.1 installed.  I built a custom install of 9.2 using the Customization Wizard which uninstalls 9.1 and installs 9.2.  This will get pushed out via SMS.
In versions 8.X and prior anytime a PDF was open there was an acrord32.exe process running.  It appears now that with 9.1 (my currently installed version) if you have a PDF open in an IE window there is no associated acrord32.exe process.  The problem is if somebody has a PDF open (in an IE window) at the time I push out 9.2 it will hang because there are files in use that need to be updated.  In the past I have simply taskkilled acrord32.exe before running setup.exe.
Anybody know how to configure setup.exe to automatically close any open PDF files and continue?
Thanks.

I don't think there's a way to do this. You'll have to kill IE to uninstall 9.1. At the most you can find out that whether a PDF is open in browser or not through a script and then kill IE. This way users who don't have PDFs open will be saved. But I strongly suggest that instead of getting into that hocus pocus you should go for simple solution and kill IE.

Why can't I open pdf's after install of adobe reader? Should I see it in system preferences?

There are can be reasons PDFs cannot be opened. For example, some forms created with Lifecycle Designer cannot be opened.
Are you sure the file is a PDF? Can you open it in Adobe Reader or Acrobat on a Mac or PC? Does it give an error message when you try to open it?

How do I open PDF links and PDF files, heeelp! This is very confusing, I've tried everything (such as installing adobe reader etc) and nothing works for me, I'm very dissapointed with Apple right now, this suck! I'm studing and I really need this function to work for me!

You don't need to, and should not, install any software to view PDF's. They open in Safari from the web, or in Preview from the Finder.

  • TS3212 How do I fix "error 7" when installing I tunes?

How do I fix "error 7" when installing I tunes?

Take a look at iTunes for Windows: "Error 7" message when opening iTunes. Perhaps your .NET Framework needs a repair.
For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

  • I cannot open pdf documents after installing Reader XI

Hi I have just installed Adobe Reader Xl. I now cannot open any pdf document - the screen is blank and closes after about 10 seconds. When running the trouble-shooter it states there is a compatibility issue. I have re-installed, I have looked at my internet options settings but still cannot resolve the issue. Do you have any suggestions? I am running Windows 7 and Norton 360 Premier Edition software.  Regards Doug

Interesting that when I installed ReaderXI I wasn't asked to accept terms.
    Cheers

  • How do I open pdf docs in Safari 5.1.5?  Online suggestions have not worked.

How do I open pdf docs in Safari 5.1.5?  Online suggestions have not worked.

    Back up all data.
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Go to Folder... from the menu bar, or press the key combinationshift-command-G. Copy the line of text below into the box that opens, and pressreturn:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari.
If you still have the issue, repeat the above steps using this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

  • How can I open PDF files?  The usual procedures don't work for me.  Thanks.

How can I open PDF files?  Until a couple of months ago, I had no problem.  Now I can open none of them.  I have Adobe Reader X.  Yesterday I uninstalled Adobe X, restarted the computer, and then reinstalled Adobe X.  No success.  Thanks.

What happens if you open Reader first then use File>Open like Bernd suggested?
Are you sure you are opening them in Reader and not a text editor or MS Word? I ask because Reader will not prompt you for a language.

  • How to open PDF automatically when printing with distiller?

Does anybody know how to get the PDF to automatically open when I print a  document using distiller please?  It is driving me crazy
    Thanks
    Mark

I am printing to a single PS file from my wordprocessor. Distiller watches the PS file folder and automatically converts the PS file to PDF. Then nothing happens, despite toggling of the 3 options. Is this universal, does it never work?
When I use a Windows wordprocessor (like MS Word or WordPerfect for Windows) and the Adobe PDF printer driver, then the PDF is automatically opened in Acrobat, but I understand that Distiller is bypassed. Acrobat ignores the product of Distiller -- unless, of course, you doubleclick on Distiller's PDF output icon, or right-click on it and choose View.
Acrobat 7 (I believe it was) opened automatically for us from Distiller. How disappointing if 9 has irretrievably lost this ability.

  • I cannot open PDF files when I am using Firefox, how can I fix this?

I cannot open PDF files while I am using Firefox. This is true for opening PDF pages in Firefox and outside of Firefox.

I ran into the same problem, and here is what I have done to fix it.
    Go to Tools/Add-ons
You might have to get the latest Adobe Acrobat Reader (Likely 10.x.....)
On any exiting Adobe Acrobat Reader select disable (to disable the plug-in)
If you have already gotten the latest Adobe Acrobat Reader just disable any earlier version.
There is no official way to uninstall a plug-in so this it the workaround.
If you do need to uninstall the plugin you need to type about:config ....about:plugins search for the article to do it.

  • How do I open PDF files in Acrobat, not Safari?

Sorry for such a dumb question, but I would like to open & view PDF files in Acrobat (v7.03 standard) rather than in Safari when I go to a PDF file in Safari, but I can't figure out how to do this. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks. (OS 10.4.2)

Ok, You can do one of 2 things.
Go where ever you find something that needs you to download to view as a .pdf.
If it opens in your browser as a pdf but not with the Adobe logo save it to your desktop by either opening the print dialogue and clicking "Save as PDF".
You can actually do that with any document. Then just highlight but dont open and click on "Get Info".
Once inthe dialogue ,look to the part that says "Open with" and locate and select Adobe 7.0.3. Click 'Open With' to select the dailogue that says, 'Use this application to open all documents like this.'
    Click 'Change all'
    That should do it.
Also you can right click on a mac pdf document and get the dialogue 'Open with' and find and select Acrobat. You will be asked by Adobe if you want to make Acrobat the defaulf programme for such files.
There used to be somewhere that you could just go to and download a simple pdf that when clicked on just presented you with the last piece of this method.
You could also just stick in a CD of a programme that you have bought for your Mac, drag any PDF that may appear on the CD to your desktop and perform the latter part of instructions.
    Cheers

  • How can I open PDF files in Firefox? Nothing works no matter what I try. Other browsers open them fine.

When trying to open PDF file, screen just stays white and no content is seen. Status says "Done". PDF files will open with no problem in internet explorer, safari, and chrome. Nothing in Firefox which is my preferred browser.

I have heard that trying to use Leopard with AppleWorks can cause a corruption of the hard drive. Is this true?
No, not at all. AppleWorks actually runs better in Leopard on both my PPC & Intel Macs than it did in Tiger. I have found AppleWorks to be faster & more stable in Leopard on an Intel than any other system I've used.
I repaired permissions (both before and after installing Leopard) and have also dumped AppleWorks preference file, then restarting all to no avail.
There are more than one AppleWorks preferences to delete. Only deleting the .plist or just the files in the AppleWorks folder in Preferences will not work. They must all be deleted at the same time. Take a look at this user tip, AppleWorks has stopped working correctly.
Deleting the preferences often fixes printing problems. Also, make sure you have the newest driver for your printer from the manufacturer's web site.
I did install Leopard as an update rather than wiping my HD and doing a new install. Should I delete AppleWorks and all associated files and reinstall AppleWorks and reinstall Leopard from scratch?
Possibly. I chose to do erase & install with migrating users & data for all of my Macs. I did try the upgrade with the MacBook Pro & it was a disaster with failure to start up after installing Leopard. I was willing to take the chance because everything on my MacBook Pro is on my desktop Mac.
