How to learn Photoshop CS 5.1?

Hello Everyone,
First off I just want to thank you for taking the time to look and hopefully answer my question.
I am fairly new to the Photoshop world.  I purchased Photoshop CS 5.1 over a year ago and it has been sitting on my Mac without me using it.  I open up the program from time to time and try to mess with it, but in all honesty I have no idea how to properly utilize it.  My goal was to use Photoshop to work on family and friends photos, and just have fun with them.
I would like to gain as much knowledge as I can with Photoshop.  However, I have found it a bit daunting to learn the program.  Can anyone recomend me some excellent turorials to get started?  Books? YouTube videos?  Anything online?  I am a college student and working part time, so unfortunately I can not currently afford the monthly membership of sites like Lynda.com
Any help you can provide me with would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks so much!!!

Start with video podcasts.
Scott Kelby's website and Terry White's site will get you up and running in no time. Then when you do have the money, go ahead and use Lynda.com it is worth it.
You will find Scott's and Terry's video's on Itunes, their dedicated web sites and Adobe TV. So they are easy to find.

    Hi,
You should take a look at www.lynda.com. They made al lot of courses also about photoshop elements. I don't know if PSE 5.0 is still available, but you can always check. If i am right you can also see what the content is of the course. I watched a few of these courses and i think it's very good.
    Hope it helps.
    Kind regards,

  • HOW DO i LEARN PHOTOSHOP

how do I leaRN TO PHOTOSHOP

Along with the suggestions for some good tutorials, much of the answer will depend on how YOU learn best.
    Some learn better with reading.
    Some learn better with doing.
Some learn better by watching others do it.
I am a combo of 1 & 2, with emphasis on 1. My wife is a combo of 2 & 3, with emphasis on 3. It just depends on the person.
One good resource for 1 & 2 is the Adobe Classroom in a Book PS CS __ , by Adobe Press. It has both the reading and then the doing, in a series of exercises. Those exercises are representative of real-world operations, and usually explore the multiple ways that PS allows the user to the same thing - the same end result is shown with several methods. As soon as CiaB comes out for my Adobe programs, I pick up a copy, and work through the exercises, while reading.
Considering the popularity of tutorials, I think that # 3 is a more common learning path nowadays.
Which ever path you choose, remember, you will never know everything about Photoshop. I've been using it commercially for almost two decades, and learn something new in these forums, almost every day.
    Good luck and happy learning.

  • Where can I learn how to use Photoshop?  Is there an online manual?

I just downloaded the 30-day free trial and watched some tutorials.  So far, OK, but not enough!  Can anyone tell me where to find instructions?

    Go to Online help page
    Photoshop Help | Photoshop Help
and on the left half way down the page there are links to two PDF files
    https://helpx.adobe.com/pdf/photoshop_reference.pdf
    http://help.adobe.com/archive/en/photoshop/cc/2013/photoshop_reference.pdf  (via the archive page)
But I always use the online facility because it is easier to search and find what you are looking for.  The CC PDF is just short of 800 pages for instance.  That would take a lot of reading through!
Adobe publish their Classroom in a Book series, which break down learning the apps into manageable chunks, but I still think that too dry and difficult as a way to learn Photoshop.  Because it is such a complex application that can do so many things, it is MUCH better to learn those aspects that you have an immediate and ongoing use for.  That way you avoid the 'use it or loose it' trap.  You don't need to learn it all in one go.  In fact there will be large chunks you will _never_ need to learn because you'll never have a use for them.
So I would suggest getting to grips with layers and layer masks, as a first step.  Then when you get stuck, come back and ask on the forum.

  • Best ways to learn photoshop CS4?

    Hello,
First time poster here. I see from posts I've been reading here that many of you are experienced Photoshop users. I hope you can share some advices on best books or videos to help me learn Photoshop.
    What do you suggest?
    TIA
    Karl

Spend thousands of hours in front of your computer with this crazy application called Photoshop open!  ;)  First and foremost, I would read some books written by Dan Margulis....possibly "Professional Photoshop" which will give you a great understanding of color correction.  Also, join NAPP http://www.photoshopuser.com/ for however inexpensive it is and watch the video tutorials which are priceless and also able to be downloaded if you have Quicktime Pro, etc. Obviously there is no substitute for time actually working in an application, but different Photoshop seminars like Photoshop World can be helpful, reading books and online tutorials are great, and also some more advanced stuff once you really have a grasp in PS would be something like Dan Margulis's classes which are SUPER intense 3 day classes which propelled me above many of my colleagues in regards to how Photoshop should really be used and what it was intended for...not just running plastic wrap filters.  :)  Hope this helps!  @.

  • How to start Photoshop CC on Creative Cloud

I dont know how to start photoshop cc on creative cloud..

    @miilktea123,
First, remember that you don't start Photoshop CC _on_ Creative Cloud, you install Photoshop on your machine via the Creative Cloud app. To do this:
    1) Go to http://creative.adobe.com
    2) Click the Download Center tab if it's not already selected
    3) Locate Photoshop and click Download
    4) The Photoshop product page displays
    5) Click Download again
    6) If it's not already installed, the Creative Cloud app is first installed (and you may be prompted to allow the Creative Cloud app installation)
    7) Once installed the Creative Cloud app downloads and installs Photoshop (again, you may be prompted to allow Photoshop to be installed)
    8) From then on, just treat it like any other app running on your computer
Installing the Creative Cloud app the first time is a bit of a nuisance, but I have to say that managing/downloading/installing apps via the Creative Cloud app is one of my favorite features of Adobe Creative Cloud.
These instructions assume that you already had a Creative Cloud subscription or have established a Creative Cloud trial account.
Let me know how it goes,

  • Best way to learn Photoshop?

    Hi there,
I'm trying to transition to a career as a graphic/web artist and before making the transition I was looking to take a photoshop and/or illustrator classes (preferably weekend classes) in the Los Angeles/Santa Monica area. I don't have photoshop on my computer so ideally I'd be able to find a class that had the program loaded on their computers already.
Any help and/or advice on how to become a graphic/web designer would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much for taking the time.

A student can buy the whole creative suite for $599 the cost of nonstudent purchase of Photoshop standard. The best way to learn Photoshop is to have it and use it. Click on every button, menu item, and pallet/panel. don't be afraid to look in every nook and cranny, I'm always surprised by the lazy people who ask the most basic questions all because they have not put the time into looking around the application.
seriously if you are going to spend all that money on the app It seems like you would want to spend some time going over it. Think of it as a video game and you must look at everything to win.
also if you only want it to crop pics and print them or put them up on a simple website Elements just might be a better choice

  • Where can I get full instructions on how to use photoshop?

Where can I get full instructions on how to use photoshop?

    Hi Stephanie,
Photoshop is a huge program with a pretty steep learning curve. I would look at your local library or bookstore for a book for your particular version of Photoshop.
Adobe Classroom in a Book is a good starting point.
I also like books by Deke McClelland, Scott Kelby and Ben Willmore.
You may also want to look at signing up at Lynda.com to access their vast video tutorial library (I believe it is $25 USD/month.)
    http://www.lynda.com/
Adobe TV has some good free tutorials:
    http://tv.adobe.com/
Julieanne Kost (my hero) has a ton of resources:

Russell Brown also has some good videos:

  • How to learn to use photo shop?

I'm wanting to learn how to use photoshop. I don't know anyting at this moment. But i would really like to know what to do and where to start. Could anyone give me some hints.
    Please
    Thank You

    Welcome to the forum.
A bit of the answer will depend on how YOU like to learn, or learn best.
I am more of a book person, so the Adobe Classroom in a Book for PS, Adobe Press, is a favorite of mine.
Tutorials, like the excellent Lynda.com are a bit lower on my list, but that is very personal preference, on my part.
One of the better learning tools out there is Photoshop User magazine, which is part of the NAPP (National Association of Photoshop Professionals) membership. Each edition has several levels of learning articles from beginner to very advanced. That is the only magazine that escapes the recycle bin around here.
Adobe TV has a lot of good tutorials, and demonstrations, as does Dr. Russell Brown.
There are also quite a few books on PS, from authors like Scott Kelby and Ben Wilmore, and most concentrate on particular subjects, such as Photoshop for Photographers. Because PS is such a powerful program, and offers features specific to so many diciplines, zeroing in on what YOU want to do, saves a lot of time, and some technical info, that might not be of use to you.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Is there an instruction sheet detailing how to install Photoshop Elements 13 (from a DVD disk), on a Windows 8.1 computer, and if so, where do I find it

Is there an instruction sheet detailing how to install Photoshop Elements 13 (from a DVD disk), on a Windows 8.1 computer, and if so, where do I find it?

Googled for an instruction sheet.  Got the following.
    https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/getting-started/install-pse.html
    and
    https;//helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/kb/photoshop-elements-installation-errors.html
(Don't know why the second one didn't turn into a link, that's the url that printed out at the bottom of the page)
In any case it doesn't matter.  I returned it to the store where I bought it.
Rule #1; Don't use a product if the people who produce that product (software, hardware, etc.) don't properly support it.
User forums and\or chat lines, are useful and may help.  But!  They do not constitute proper support (not for installation purposes anyway).

  • How to install Photoshop on a new computer

    Jeff,
That option is not working for me because I have a subscription to Adobe Photoshop rather than a product.
When I view my orders, it says I have no orders, I can only see my purchases through the "my subscription and services" link.
I do not see a place to download the program.
    Please help!
    Thanks!

Branching this to a new discussion.
Yearnlearn please see Install and update apps - https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/help/install-apps.html for information on how to install Photoshop CC 2014.
