How to Leave Mail on Server

I can't find a "preferences" setting to leave incoming mail on my server. Even with MobileMe, I keep "losing" mail that is downloaded to Mail on my MacBook Pro laptop, and I need to later be able to download the same messages to my iMac desktop in order to keep my records straight.
(Even the IMAP accounts won't sync incoming mail to MobileMe. . . but I wouldn't need that if I could just leave mail read on my laptop on the server.)

that's special to some email providers. I know gmail POP does it but i didn't know about Comcast. such email providers have special POP setups and then messages removal preferences can only be set via webmail interface and whatever you do in email client preferences (Mail.app or any other email client) is ignored by the server.

  • Leave mail on server - where do I find this setting?

    Hi everyone,
I'm looking for this setting as it informed me on the izymail website to change my setting to 'leave mail on server' as this will allow me to access my emails that I have already opened on my laptop/PC.
Where can I find this setting? iPhone/IzyMail/Hotmail?
    Regards,

There would be a setting in your email client for this. Outlook or outlook express you have to go into the account options/properties and in the more settings section . On the iphone I think you want to go into the advanced settings on the email account and set the delete from server option to how you like.

  • Leave mail on server with gmail

I configured my ipad to retrieve my mail from gmail but it is not leaving my mail on the server and therefore whatever I receive on the iPad I now don't receive on my computer. How do I fix this on the iPad, I can't seem to find the setting to leave messages on the server.

If you go to settings in GoogleMail on the web, and go into 'Forwarding and POP/IMAP' you will see the POP and IMAP settings. Make sure that POP is disabled and that IMAP is enabled for receiving mails. That should sort out your problem. All received mail should be the same on the server, your iPad, computer etc. Deleting a mail will delete them from everywhere, remember.
However, I am confused by how GMail works for sending emails. It just seems to work like a POP account with an SMTP server, as all 'sent' mails just seem to get stored on the device that they were sent from. No syncing at all.
On my MobileMe IMAP account, all mails - received, sent, etc. - are all synced to all devices.

  • Can no longer leave mail on server

After 4 hours with ATT and Apple including an Apple call back that never came I have not solved what seemed a simple problem. In the past my phones have left messages that I deleted from my phone on the Att/yahoo server. They no longer do. If I delete an email from my phone it is deleted from the server (at&t) of course. The options to change this are no longer in the iphone settings. No one at Apple or AT&T seems to know what is going on. Can anyone help? Thanks!

I don't want to remove the mail from the server, I want it to remain on the server when I delete it from my Iphone as it did before the OS 4 update.
    Duh... no kidding?
Then check your account setting on your iPhone for removing messages from the server when downloaded. The available setting for this on the iPhone with a POP account is as I provided.
On my laptop I have Outlook set to leave messages on the server. On my desk top, when I receive a message it is deleted from ATT/ yahoo.
What is your account setting with Outlook on your Desktop for removing messages from the sever when downloaded?
If set to never the same as with the account settings with Outlook on your laptop, try deleting and recreating the account on your iPhone.

  • Hotmail setup in IOS6 does not have a "leave mail on server" setting

Since upgrading to IOS6 and iPhone 5 I noticed that my Hotmail account does not behave as it did before the upgrade.  Prior to the upgrade, Hotmail was set up as a POP3 service, with settings that allowed user to retain email on the server.  Thus, if you read or deleted email on the iPhone or iPad, you still had it on your Macbook or iMac.  With the new IOS, there is an option for an easier ADD Email for Hotmail.  If you utilize the easy setup, you get no choices in how IOS device handles your email - if you read you incoming email on the iPhone, the email is automatically grayed out as READ on the laptop.  If you delete the email on the iPhone, the email is deleted on the Mac.  There are no settings that allow you to modify the behaviour of the mail account, unless you delete the account and reinstall using the "Other" service.
Is this a "FEATURE" or was there a mistake made by Apple in how it manages Hotmail accounts?

Yup.  You have to use the "Settings"/"Mail Contacts Calendars"/"Add Account"/"Other" option to set up hotmail and then under "Advanced" options, set "Delete from server" to NEVER.
If you use the native option to set up your hotmail account, it will push all changes made on phone thru to server.

  • Pop email account - no option to leave mail on server - no option to select all messages

I have recently obtained a Playbook and I use the latest OS version 2.1.0.1314 So, unlike other users, I did not experience the lack of an email application. I think the email application is excellent but it does have a couple of shortcomings. I would expect an option to leave email on the server when deleting emails on the Playbook. I have checked all the types in setup, not just Pop, and none offer this feature. I am a bit puzzled by another post on this site that refers to such an option. Was it a feature previously? I would also expect a bulk selection option so that all emails could be tagged for deletion without having to tag each one separately. These 2 features may well have been requested from Blackberry already and hopefully they will be included in a future release. Do Blackberry have a Suggestion Box?

Let me try and explain why that option is not required or even relevant to Playbook.
An email Client like Outlook or Thunderbird goes and gets a copy of your email from the webmail and stores it on your computer permanently. That "pop" action very often deletes the webmail version so you have an option to leave it there or not.
Playbook messages app is not an email client. Think of it as a remote control for your webmail. It takes a temporary copy of any webmail less than 7 days old (you can vary it between 1 day and 30 days) and whatever you do with it in Playbook happens to webmail. It uses your webmail's own rules for things like storing copies of sent mail.
If you delete a mail, it deletes it from webmail. If you don't, it doesn't. When it gets to 7 days old it just does not sync with Playbook and you can't see it any more. But it will still be there in Webmail unless you purposefully delete it with Playbook.
If you want to delete a whole page, tap the top one and the bottom one at the same time to select all mails between. It is most effective when in Portrail mode. Remember though this will delete them from your webmail.

  • Mail.app on Leopard & Tiger glitch with "leave mail on server" setting.

A coworker has configured her two Macs (one at work, running 10.4.11; and one at home, running 10.5.8) to download email from a single POP account on our company server, using Mail.app on each system.
She did this by using the "Remove copy from server after retrieving message:" setting checked on, and with "after one month" selected from the associated pop-up menu.
This worked fine for her for a few weeks, but recently both computers seem to have lost track of which messages they've previously downloaded. As a result, whenever she checks mail, both versions of Mail.app want to download the roughly several thousand emails stored in her inbox.
Is there some known glitch in Mail that explains this? Or is there some interaction between the two Mail apps that might be creating confusion? Or is that setting just not intended to work the way we're expecting?
I personally use that same approach to manage mail between a couple of devices and mail clients (including a copy of Mail.app), and have done for years without anything like this behavior, so I'm baffled.
    Thanks for any advice!

    Restoring Lost OS X Files
If you erase or otherwise "lose" an OS X system application or utility (such as Mail or Disk Utility, for example) you can restore them without having to reinstall OS X.
Download the shareware utility Pacifist. Read the documentation. Use Pacifist to extract a fresh copy of the missing application from the file archives on your OS X Installer disc. The file archives are usually found on the installer disc in the /System/Installations/ folder.
After restoring the application you need to reinstall the OS X Combo Updater for the version of OS X you currently have installed. This assures the new copy of the application is updated to the current version.
Lastly, it's a good idea to repair permissions.

  • Mail / iPhone / desktop - leave mail on server

I've just had a laptop meltdown and am using a desktop machine until it's fixed. I want to be able to collect my email on my iPhone 4GS but also access it on desktop. However when I pick up mail on phone it's not remaining on the server. Can't find the relevant bit of the manual. Can anyone help...?

try rechecking and unchecking that box. If that doesn't work you can try rcreating your mail preference file.
quit mail and move the file homedirectory/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist to the desktop and start Mail. you'll have to recreate your mail accounts but once you do they'll recognize their existing mailboxes. go to mail preferences->accounts and uncheck the box to remove messages from server. see if this helps.

  • Leave message on server

My Orange account is set up on my Blackberry flip pearl and I have a message saying
If you use an email client Microsoft, outlook, Mozilla ,T hunderbird to access your Orange messages, change your email client settings to leave your email at the server.
if the email client does not leave your email messages on the server, blackberry service may notbe able to deliver to your Blackberry device.
I have tried the following OUTLOOK under tools or mail preferences
    Select mail account
     locate advanced server setting options
select option to leave  mail on server.
the thing is I CANNOT FIND THE  TABS ON MY WINDOWS XP PC.

Ahhh...reconciliation is a different problem from initial receipt of emails. Reconciliation of deleted, read/unread/etc is discussed in this KB:
    http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=KB05133&slic...
Warning -- when you dig deep into that KB (and it's linked references) you will I am sure discover some inconsistencies. These have been reported to RIM and they are working on revising all KB's related to BIS reconciliation features for accuracy and consistency.
As for initial download of emails, each POP client (BIS, your PC, etc.) can maintain their own flag for downloading emails. But, some POP servers may not allow that independent flag for each POP client. What is supposed to happen is that the flag of "already downloaded" (I'm sure it's called something else!!) is independent for each POP client -- so that each can retrieve the message (as long as it's on the server). But, some POP servers seem to be able to override that flag -- so, if the message was downloaded to the Outlook client, it won't be able to download to the BIS client even though it's BIS' first attempt. I'm not really sure how that all works -- I'm not a POP server guru, but that's the behavior you are describing (I think).
I am hopeful that the re-write of the KB's by RIM will help to clarify all of this better.

  • How can I control SMTP server list in Mail?

I've seen a lot of discussion about e.g. deleting servers, but it often includes smug replies like "click the delete button" when there is often no such button. I have found a possible 'get around' to this particular problem by changing the server data to something that doesn't exist, save that, then select the server again from the list and hey presto, there is now a Delete button you can use. But again, that is not the full story because if that server is used as the primary server for any other account, you cannot modify the data.
Not only that, but you CANNOT simply swap servers so that e.g. an account uses one of the other servers as its primary server. Unless I'm missing something major here, it is NOT possible to move servers. You can change the data for the server to be exactly the same as another server, but that just means you now have an identical duplicate. Once a server entry has been created, it is an independent data entity.
So I seem to have several problems here.
    1. A server cannot be deleted if it's in use as a primary for any account.
    2. Servers cannot be moved, i.e. swapped between 'Primary' and 'Other'
    3. Simply editing the server data does not 'merge' it with any other entry that may have the exact same data.
    4. When creating an account, you cannot pick the outgoing SMTP server from the list of ones already created. Simply entering the same data as one that already exists may use that existing server, but may create a new duplicate. I have seen both of these occur and once there's a duplicate, you cannot get rid of it.
I want 3 accounts to all use the same 'Primary' server and also have the same 'Other' server. IOW, only 2 actual servers. After the first 2 accounts are created, that's what I have. Somehow they seem to be able to 'share' the same servers. But when I create the third account and enter the same data for its SMTP server as the others use as their primary (i.e. exactly the same process as when creating the second account), for some reason it does NOT use the existing matching server and I now get a third server created. I simply cannot get around this since whatever I do, each of the duplicates is used as a primary and so cannot be deleted. If I could swap them around so that the third account was using another account as its primary, then I could delete the duplicate and all would be well, but as pointed out above, that's not possible.
I'm hoping that I'm simply wrong about all this and it is actually possible to do what I currently believe it impossible. Can anyone explain how to actually control this server list?

can't edit SMTP server list in Mail
i have exactly the same problem using 10.9.4 - did you ever get a reply?

Try going to the web based site and see if you can set up a temporary folder there. Move anything you don't want to download to that folder.

  • In sending an e-mail, I get a message of copy placed in outbox, e-mail addres server rejected , how do I correct outgoing settings.?

In sending an e-mail, I get an error message that it is placed in the outbox, the e-mail address server has rejected this, how do I reset outgoing mail.?

Relaying is the act of sending an email whose return address is xxx@yyy and using an outgoing email server whose domain is @zzz.  Many/most services reject this because many spam mails are sent using relaying (in order to avoid using a valid return address).
Check the outgoing mail server setting. Make sure that your username and password are in there.
Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>Your email account>Account>Outgoing mail server - tap the server name next to SMTP and check in the primary server and make sure your username and password are entered and correct - even if it says that the password is optional.

  • Leave email on server, delete from i-pad HOW?

OK, I've read all of the different e-mails on this subject, and have not yet found the answer. I want to be able to delete ALL mail on my i-pad WITHOUT affecting the e-mail on my Yahoo server. I have gone to Settings/Mail.../My Account/Advanced and have only 3 buttons there:
    Mailbox Behaviors
    Drafts Mailbox
    Deleted Mailbox
    Deleted Messages
    Remove
    Never
    After One Day
    After One Week
    After One Month
There is absolutely nothing here that says to leave mail on the yahoo server when I delete it from the i-pad.
Can anyone help me out? I do not use my ipad primarily for e-mail and save a LOT of e-mail on the server that I would like to remove from ipad.

Might be an omission on Apple's part, or might be the configuration requested by Yahoo - there's no way to tell from here. If interested in Apple fixing it, though, you'll have to make that request via the FEEDBACK FORM — http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html

  • Mail OUTGOING SERVER ISSUE

How can I change the server for outgoing mail?? I only have one and it prompts me with this:
Cannot send message using the server
    smtp.mac.com:sharrkmedia
The connection to the server "smtp.mac.com" on port 25 timed out.
Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below or click Try
Later to leave the message in your Outbox until it can be delivered.
    any thoughts?

If you look around the discussions you will see there are many folk with the same issue. It looks like a serious bug in Mail. I have the same problem. I believe it has nothing to do with what port you are using. Port 25 should be the right port for most folk.
Some people have managed to get things working but it seems to me they've sorted things by fluke rather than logic. There doesn't seem to be a fix-for-all.
I have read these things have worked for some folk (not me)...
    -reset router/computer
-erase email accounts and manually create them again
-re-enter (ie delete and re-type) the SMTP server address(es)
-switch on/off/on smtp authentication (it should be off for most folk)
    -plus others I've forgotten now.
Non of this worked for me.
Personally, I believe these are not fixes but they might have an effect on the problem for some people.
I'm waiting for a solution and using my old computer in the mean time
