How to limit broadcast traffic to two PC's

We have a hardware appliance that behaves badly on the network.  It constantly sends broadcasts on port 45454 to announce its presence on the network.  We have only two possible clients for this appliance, on the same VLAN as the appliance. What is the best solution please to make sure that the traffic only reaches the intended receivers ?
What if we move the two PC's to another VLAN ?

As they are broadcasts, your best option is pretty much what you've already mentioned, moving the devices to their own VLAN (you mention moving the two recipients, but you also want to move the source host too).

  • How to limit mail traffic with MfE

    Hi all
    I did set up MfE on my e71. I know from mobile 6 ppc´s to limit traffic per mail like only download 1kb per mail. Where can I set this option in MfE?
    BR Chris

    I don't know of a setting to limit the size of each message as a limit in Nokia's MfE 2.9, but the following provides some limitations of how much you get:
    1. Primary limitation of messages is provided with the setting for Options->Settings->Mail for Exchange->Options->Edit Profile->Email->Sync messages back.  I typically have 90 days of messages in my Inbox on the Exchange server, but limit the MfE content on my N97 to 1 week.
    2. Secondary limitation of email is that attachments are not automatically downloaded.  They are shown as a list when you open the message and it will report the size of each and even prompt you with a warning if you select a large attachment to download.
    3. The documentation for MfE (http://nds1.nokia.com/phones/files/guides/Nokia_Mail-for-Exchange_2.9_UG_en.pdf) says "if a message is very large, only a portion of it will be downloaded automatically.  To download the remainder of the message body select  Options->Fetch."  I've found that this ends up limiting to about 10 kb per message.
    4. If you are still having storage space problems on your C: drive, you should reconfigure your email to save on the E: drive (highly recommended for N97 owners for all email regardless of whether you use MfE or not.

  • Multi-auth and broadcast traffic

    I was talking with a co-worker about multi-auth host mode and we are wondering how does it handle broadcast traffic. So if we have a switch port set to multi-auth and we are doing dynamic vlan assignment. Say you have an esx host device running 5 vm instances, if three of them pass and get assigned vlan 32, the other two fail and get assigned vlan 86. When a broadcast goes out on vlan 32, will the devices that are in vlan 86 see the broadcast traffic?

    Anybody have an idea?

  • How to limit  dimensions values of querybuilder

    Hi,
    I want to learn how to limit dimension value in query builder. i want, the user who run the querybuilder can not see a dimension value which i do not want to display.
    For example,
    The time dimension has "2000" and "2001" values as default which is defined in database. Normally when i run the querybuilder for create new presentation or calculation, In the dimensions panel of the querybuilder display all values of each of dimension. The user can select values which she/he want from that list.
    But i want to limit values which the user can see in the dimensions panel of the querybuilder. for this time dimension example, i want to hide "2001" value from the user. How can i do it. if there is any sample code, please share.

    Thanks Thomas, excellent suggestions as always.
    If anybody wants more information regarding Thomas' suggestions please refer to
    Oracle9i OLAP Developer's Guide to the OLAP DML for the AW Permit command.
    In sumamry: To create permission programs, you define two programs with the names permit_read and permit_write. In these programs, you can specify PERMIT commands that grant or restrict access to individual workspace objects. In addition, you write these programs as user-defined functions that return a Boolean value, and the return value indicates to Oracle OLAP whether or not the user has the right to attach the workspace.
    For relational security there is an excellent tutorial on the database pages of OTN, follow this link:
    http://otn.oracle.com/obe/start/index.html
    then follow the links for Oracle9i Database Release 9.2.0.2 - Security - Creating Label-based Access Control. This module describes how to use Oracle Label Security to setup security based on label policies
    These security layers should be transparent to the OLAP metadata layer, therefore, once you have implemented your chosen security method your BI Beans application will only need to connect with the appropriate user to inherit the security layer. • How to limit threads in a Java QuickSort algorithm.

    With the following piece of code, I quickly run into OutOfMemory exceptions, since the code starts creating Threads exponentially. However, after waiting for a long time (for all the exception texts to print out, obviously making it slower than running it with one thread only), the program eventually ends with the correct result. Is there a way to run the code as is, but making sure that no more that x threads are running at a time?
    things I have tried:
    - sleeping the current thread - makes it slower than one-thread.
    - looping blank while Thread.activeCount() > x - doesnt work at all
    - suspending resuming threads based on the activeCount - doesnt work too
    Code:
    import java.util.*;
    import java.io.*;
    public class ThreadedSort extends Thread{
    private ArrayList<Integer> _list;
         public ThreadedSort()
              _list = new ArrayList<Integer>();
         public ThreadedSort(ArrayList<Integer> List)
              _list = List;
         public void run()
              threadQuickSort();
    public void threadQuickSort()
              try{
    if (_list.size() < 2)
    return;
    Integer pivot = new Integer(_list.get(_list.size()-1));
              ArrayList<Integer> left = new ArrayList<Integer>();
              ArrayList<Integer> right = new ArrayList<Integer>();
    //ListIterator iter = arr.listIterator();
              // *** optimize here
    for (int i = 0; i < _list.size()-1; i++) {
                   Integer next = (Integer)_list.get(i);
                   if (next <= pivot)
                        left.add(next);
                   else
                        right.add(next);
              ThreadedSort LeftThread = new ThreadedSort(left);
              ThreadedSort RightThread = new ThreadedSort(right);
    //          System.out.println(Thread.currentThread().getName()+" --> "+Thread.activeCount());
    //          Thread.sleep(4000);
              LeftThread.start();
              RightThread.start();
    //          System.out.println(Thread.currentThread().getName()+" --> "+Thread.activeCount());
              LeftThread.join();
              RightThread.join();
              _list.clear();
              list.addAll(LeftThread.list);
              _list.add(pivot);
              list.addAll(RightThread.list);
              }catch (InterruptedException ie) { ie.printStackTrace(); }
              return;
    public static void main(String[] args) { ///////////////////////////////////////////
              Random rand = new Random();
              ArrayList arr1 = new ArrayList();
              long before_threadedQuickSort, after_threadedQuickSort;
              try{
              FileWriter fout = new FileWriter("out.txt");
              BufferedWriter bw = new BufferedWriter(fout);
              before_populate = System.currentTimeMillis();
              for (int i = 0; i< 2000; i++){//***
                   arr1.add(rand.nextInt(2000000));
              after_populate = System.currentTimeMillis();
              ThreadedSort sorter3 = new ThreadedSort(new ArrayList(arr1));
              before_threadedQuickSort = System.currentTimeMillis();
              sorter3.start();
              sorter3.join();
              after_threadedQuickSort = System.currentTimeMillis();
              bw.write("time for threadedQuickSort: " + (after_threadedQuickSort - before_threadedQuickSort)); bw.newLine();
              bw.newLine();
              arr1.clear();
              bw.close();
              }catch (Exception IOException){};
              System.out.printf("\n\n");
    } //end of main
    } //end of class

    So you dont have to go thru the code:
    Quicksort:
    with one thread only I start the sorting by choosing a pivot from the initial list and then generating a left list (all values less then pivot) and a right list (all values greater then pivot).
    then i recursively call quicksort with the left and right lists.
    with one thread that works fine.
    threadedQuickSort:
    each thread object has a variable _list that keeps its list.
    from the initial thread, i do generate again two lists (left and right) but then i construct two threadable objects with those lists and start them, creating for each list a new thread.
    so each thread will create two new threads.
    for a initial list with up to 2000 rows, that yields to the correct result although much slower than the one-threaded version. maximum number of threads ever used was around 500~600.
    for a list with 20000 rows, my machine chokes at around 2600 threads. (OutOfMemory exception)
    My Processor is a 8 core (each core can run up to two threads) giving me a total of 16 actual threads i can work with.
    So the question is how to limit the threads that are created to 16. There is no method in the Thread class where you can specify the max number of threads in a threadgroup.
    @ jverd:
    I looked at ThreadPoolExecutor, but it looks kinda complicated. I see that the idea is creating a queue of jobs to be executed (which would be the different sublists (left and right lists), and then using the specified number of threads to work with the queued jobs, but im failing to understand how it works. Can you point to a simple example somewhere showing how to declare a ThreadPoolExecutor object and work with it. thanks

  • 340 bridge traffic between two non root bridges

    I have a deployent with a 340 series bridge acting as root bridge and two 340 bridges acting as non-root remotes. The hosts hanging off the non-root bridges can communicate with the hosts hanging off the root bridge but i cannot get communication to work between hosts on the two non-root bridges. Is there some sort of split horizon type setting I need to configure on the root-bridge to allow traffic back out the radio interface.

    There isn't anything in the bridges that would block traffic between the two sites. Is this one large subnet, or are there two subnets? If there are two, how are you routing between the two?
    Can one non-root bridge ping the other non-root?

  • Time Capsule firewall allows broadcast traffic

    It appears that Time Capsule will forward broadcast traffic from the LAN side to WAN and allow responses back. I would have thought that when the Router Mode was set to "DHCP and NAT" that this wouldn't happen. It seems like this might be a security flaw.
    Here's my setup, and why I believe this is the case:
    Comcast Xfinity service -> Motorola SB6121 -> Time Capsule (latest generation 7.6.1 software) -> Netgear GS116 -> home network with airport express and various hard-wired and WiFi devices.
    The SB6121 cable modem is wired direclty to the WAN port on the Time Capsule. And then the first LAN port on the Time Capusule is wired direclty the Netgear switch. And then everything else is wired directly to the Netgear switch. The Time Capsule's DHCP server is set to hand out addresses in the 172.16.0.2 to 172.16.0.200 range and so everything in my home network should be getting addresses in that range.
    The SB6121 is not a gateway or router - its just a modem, but does still have a weird little DHCP server that is supposedly only active when the cable service is dead, but in practice (at least for me) seems to always be on. And there's no way to turn it off, at least from my end - perhaps Comcast could, but that's a black hole. This weird little DHCP server is hard-wired to hand out addresses between 192.168.100.11 and 192.168.100.42 and there's no way to configure it differently.
    What I see though I (which makes me think there is a security flaw in the Time Capsule firewall) is that DHCP requests from my home network are sometimes answered by the SB6121's DHCP server instead of the Time Capsule's. I say "sometimes" because most of my Apple equipment (laptops, iPhones, iPads and a Mac Mini) get configured with 172.16.0.X addresses. But most non-Apple equipment is getting 192.168.100.X addresses - this includes a Denon AV reciever and Comcast cable box. But I also have an Airport Express (latest version, 7.6.2 software) - its Router Mode is set to "Off (Bridge Mode)", but if its Internet -> Connect Using: is set to DHCP it also gets a 192.168 address.
    I thought maybe it was just the hard-wired devices getting the 192.168 addresses, but they're not. The Mac Mini is hardwired and gets the right address range. And then I thought that all WiFi devices were getting 172.16 addresses, but they're not. I have a "Nest" thermostat that connects to the WiFi and gets a 192.168 address.
    Obviously there are several problems here - having multiple DHCP servers on a network is a recipe for disaster. But it seems to me that the Time Capusule is mis-behaving. The weird little DHCP server on the cable modem on the WAN side of the Time Capsule shouldn't be accessible from my home network. The Time Capsule shouldn't be passing broadcast DHCPDiscover packets from the LAN side through to the WAN side.
    I've been all through the Time Capsule settings and don't see a way to further lock down the WAN-LAN connection. I suppose I could get a managed switch or "real" firewall to stick between the cable modem and the Time Capsule and use it to block traffic, but I shouldn't have to. And I suppose I could ask Comcast to disable the DHCP server on the cable modem, but I don't have the fortitue to sit on hold for hours trying to explain it to them. Or I suppose I could get a different cable modem that doesn't have the silly DHCP server, and maybe that's the ultimate answer, but I still think the Time Capsule has a flaw.
    I got the SB6121 plus Time Capsule combination specifically because I didn't want fidgety stuff to deal with. I could have gotten a router supporting DD-WRT if I wanted to play network engineer at home, but I do that at work and just wanted something I didn't have to debug or think about.
    Anybody in a similar situation or have suggestions?
    If you got this far, thanks for listening.
    -dave.
    (Oh yeah, I swapped the Time Capsule with the Aiport Express -- latest model with WAN and LAN ports -- and got the exact same behavior. I suspect that all Airport models just treat the multple ethernet ports as a dumb layer two switch and blindly forward ethernet broadcast traffic from one port to all the others.)

    Thanks for reporting this.. I think you should advise Apple of this flaw.. It is a serious flaw.
    The cable modems are always made with local IP address so you can check the settings and the DHCP in them is designed for using a block of public IP addresses.. ie.. if you were extremely rich.. you buy a block of IP addresses from the ISP, plug the modem directly to a switch. And every client that joined would get a public IP address. Since the ISP are not that generous as to actually hand out more than one IP, (our local cable ISP in Australia, Telstra actually gives out 3 for free). The modem however will switch from public to private IP address when it does so, once the first address is allocated. There is no security risk as that private IP has no internet connection. (Test it and see, but any device getting 192.168 address should have no internet connection). The Modem has no NAT.. so it is purely for internal purposes.
    When you tested the Airport Express, did you set it up to 172.16.x.x range as well?
    Could you please test if you haven't already the TC at its native IP address and range?
    Domestic routers often fail to work properly if used off their default range.. somewhere in the coding they have fixed some addressing, instead of correctly using settings you put in. This is not at all unusual actually. My advice to people is always stick with default unless you really want some pain.
    If you are happy with pain, I would ensure all names are set to SMB standard.. as it sounds like you know networks I presume you would already do this. Apple names are ghastly things.
    Stick to short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric names for everything.
    Make sure the dhcp range includes enough addresses that it cannot run out..the normal standard is 2-200.
    If the lease time is set to 1day default, set it to 20min.
    I would also turn off ipv6 (maybe only possible on the client). That does seem to lead to confusion.
    If necessary you should be able to use static IP reservation via the dhcp setting in the TC.. that might also help.
    Are you running a 5.6 utility to do the setup?? If not you must!!
    You can load it even into Mountain Lion with a bit of fiddling.
    Check logs and setup the reservation for any devices failing to get IP correctly.
    And yes, in the end you may have to simply use a more standard router.. and hive off the TC to bridged role.

  • How can I send email using two different email address that both link back to my one exchange account on my Ipad mini

    How can I send email using two different email address that both link back to my one exchange account on my Ipad mini?
    On my PC I simply have a master return email address and use a POP for the secondary address.  Both are through the one exchange account without a problem.  I need to be able to do the same on my Ipad.

    Ah, I should have made that clear.  My domain didn't come from google.  It was purchased at and is hosted at dreamhost, but I haven't used their email servers in years - I just route everything through gmail.  I actually have a bunch of domains (with websites).
    Gmail has an option that lets someone with custom domains send (and receive) email through gmail using the custom domain once Google confirms proper ownership of the domain (to prevent spammers and such).  Gmail has a setting for "send email as" which allows gmail to be sent using a custom domain as the sender.  I'm pretty sure Apple's old mobileme had this feature too, but I didn't use it.

    Qualcuno sa come collegare il testo in due o più caselle di testo nella versione 5.0 di Pages. Grazie per le vostre risposte.

    It's just one of the many, many features that have been eliminated or changed. Leave feedback for the Pages team using the link in the Pages menu and review & rate the new versions in the Mac App Store.
    If you previously had iWork '09, those apps are still in your Applications folder in a folder named iWork '09. You can continue to use them to get things done.

  • How to limit the max dialog no that one user can use at the same time?

    Hi,
    I meet one performance problem that one user can open 6 sessions in the GUI and he/she can run 6 reports at the same time witch could occupy 6 dialogs in the sap R/3 instance. It makes poor performance for other users.
    Would you pls tell me how to limit the no. of sessions one user can create at the same time or how to limit the no. of dialogs one user can occupy at the same time?
    Thanks a lot!
    I used this parameters in the default profile as blew:
    rdisp/rfc_check 1
    rdisp/rfc_use_quotas 1
    rdisp/rfc_max_own_used_wp 20 (means: 20%)
    It still didn't work.
    Sean

    Hello,
    We can reserve DIA W.P by giving value to the parameter :- rdisp/rfc_min_wait_dia_wp=1(default)
    that have to necessarily remain free for other users.
    This parameter is used to reserve a number of dialog work processes for Dailog mode.
    For eg. If 10 dialog w.p. are configured for the instance(rdsip/wp_no_dia=10) and the parameter rdisp/rfc_min_wait_dia_wp=3 is set,parallel RFC's can occupy a maximum of 7 DIA W.P.3 DAI W.P. always remain free for dialog mode.
    But now the question is how we assign/restrict this free dialog w.p. to the specific user.
