How to limit SATA III to SATA II speed on MBP 2011

I've bought an 240 GB SSD with SATA III interface. The SATA controller detects the device correctly and sets up a 6Gbit/s connection.
With this set up my system - and according to many public postings many other systems, too - experience temporary failures of the connection, i.e. the system repeatedly stops sending data over the sata connection. Some information hint that the SATA cable doesn't support 6Gbit/s because it's not shielded well.
I would like to solve this issue by limiting the SATA-sped to 3Gbit/s. This should be possible somehow...
Does anybody know how to configure the SATA-controller to set up a SATA II / 3Gbit/s connection to the SSD?
Thanks in advance!

(google for "ssd sata 3 macbook pro 13 2011 hang" and you will find many reports of incompatibilities.)
The author tested one sata II and three sata III solid state drives in an MacBook pro 13" early 2011.
There are many articles in the net describing problems with MBP 2011 and sata III ssds.
I hope that limiting the sata controller to 3Gbit/s will solve the problem.
I would prefer this solution over buying a sata II ssd. First, because all modern ssd have sata III support and second, because I will be able to use the ssd when I switch to the MBP 2012 at some time in the future.

  • Lightroom user - Multiple SSD setup & SATA III availability - suggestions?

Ok, this is a convoluted question (in my mind), but I'm going to ask it anyway. Also, I realize that none of this is probably going to make a ton of difference, but every little bit helps.
    This is my current setup:
-120gb Corsair Force GT - Windows 7, Lightroom 5 and CS6 (among a few other programs)
-240gb Corsair Force GS - Lightroom catalog and working files
-7200rpm Seagate HDD - Final copy jpg storage
    -Other specs: i7 2600k, 24gb RAM, GTX 560
The SSD with Windows & Adobe software usually runs pretty close to 20gb free, so I'd like to get a larger & faster SSD to clone to. I'm thinking of getting a Samsung 840 Pro 256gb.
So, assuming I keep the exported files on the HDD, I'd have the 3 SSDs (all fast, but the Samsung would be the fastest) at my disposal. Here are my questions regarding the SSDs:
    1) Would it be advantageous to split up the Lightroom catalog and the working files onto two separate SSDs? Or would you suggest keeping them together?
    2) Should I use the Samsung 840 Pro for the OS & programs? Or would a different use help to maximize overall performance?
A second part to this scenario - my motherboard only has 2 internal SATA III connections (the rest are SATA II obviously). If I don't pursue a new mobo, which I'm not going to at this time, which of the two SSDs (and associated purposes) would you put on the SATA III connections?
    Thanks!

Are you experiencing performance issues with your current LR System and in what areas (Develop module, Export, etc.)?
Your current 3.4GHz  i7 2600k quad core processor should be provide good LR performance. There is also no guarantee that moving to a higher-performance  4 , 6, or 8 core processor will improve things inside LR. We've actually had cases in the LR forum where performance is worse with certain high-performance processors (6 and 8 core).
Multiple SSDs don't add much LR performance improvement on a properly functioning system. Running all your SSDs on SATA III versus SATA II ports is unlikely to produce any "measurable" LR performance improvement since you're already at the point of diminishing returns.

  • P55-GD85 SATA III problem

I have just built my system with WD Caviar Black SataIII and installed windows 7 with the hard drive in the SataII port. Everything went great, until I realized I has it in the wrong Sata port and wanted to utilize the SataIII connection to take advantage of the whole reason to buy the board and the hard drive. When I try an switch over, windows attempts to load and then BSOD and restarts immediately.
I dont know if my SataIII controller is bad. Is there anyway to tell???

What is incorrect about it? Revison 1(I)->1.5Gb/s, Revison 2(II)->3Gb/s and Revision 3(III)->6Gb/s.  Makes perfect sense to me.
I was just referring to what it says on that Wikipedia page:
    Quote
    Terminology
The name SATA II has become synonymous with the 3 Gbit/s standard. In order to provide the industry with consistent terminology, the SATA-IO has compiled a set of marketing guidelines for the third revision of the specification.
        * The SATA 6Gb/s specification should be called Serial ATA International Organization: Serial ATA Revision 3.0.
        * The technology itself is to be referred to as SATA 6 Gb/s.
        * A product using this standard should be called the SATA 6 Gb/s [product name].
Using the terms SATA III or SATA 3.0 to refer to a SATA 6Gb/s product, is unclear and not preferred. SATA-IO has provided a guideline to foster consistent marketing terminology across the industry.
    Clear as mud!

  • How would I go about changing my harddrive to a SATA III 6Gbit/s drive?

I want to replace my 250GB hard drive in my macbook pro from 2009. How would I go about changing it to a SATA III 6Gbit/s drive?
Do I also need to replace RAM or anything else? What step should I take?
    Thank you!

You can certainly install whatever drive you like, but your Macbook Pro is fixed at SATA II. SATA III drives will work fine, but only up to 3Gb/s (which far exceeds a rotational drive's read/write speeds anyway).
In practical terms, if you want to copy your current system onto the new drive, you would need to buy an external enclosure (Firewire or USB2), install the new drive in that and format it Mac Extended using Disk Utility. Clone your current system over using SuperDuper.
Make sure the new drive is named something different from the original drive to distinguish them when you restart. Test that it will boot by holding down Option as you power up the computer.
Remove the new drive from the enclosure and install it using iFixit guides.
If you don't want to use the files on your current drive, you don't need the enclosure, but it's recommended, so you can use your current drive as extra storage after you do the upgrade.

  • Z68A-GD80 (G3) RAID 10 (Intel Controller) How to Connect to MB in SATA III???

In the User Guide and in the promo/product description for this MB it says it supports RAID 10 Intel and the minimum number of drives needed is four.
There are only TWO SATA III connectors on the MB(Intel).  How do you connect four SATA III SSDs to the MB for RAID 10????
I just bought four SATA III SSDs and they were blister packed and nonreturnable!!
    HELP!!

    Quote
The MSI Specs do NOT make this clear! Period!
The MSI specifications did never tell you that there are more than 2 SATA ports available via the same controller, which would be the precondition for a 4xSATA-III-RAID-10-Setup. There is no Z68 mainboard out there that has more than 2 SATA-III ports on the same controller.
What you are mad about is yourself not checking the number of available SATA-III ports on the same controller.  This information is out there, clearly written on the product page, in the user manual and is even indicated by the coloring of the SATA ports themselves.
All you need to do is accept the fact that it is actually you that did not properly acknowledge this clearly available information.
There is no Intel mainboard out there on the market with 4 x SATA-III ports on the same controller, which means a RAID-10-array of 4xSATA-III drives is completely impossible unless you find an add-on SATA-III RAID controller offering at least 4 SATA-III ports which supports a RAID 10 configuration.

All are SATA III drives and the motherboard support SATA III. There are no jumpers on the drives that limit the speed.  I've check the bios and there is no setting to set the speed of the SATA bus. The drives are being detected using ahci but not at SATA III speeds. I'm not sure if it matters but the OCZ drive was cloned for a slower speed drive when it was installed. I've been searching and can't find how to get the drives to detect at SATA III. Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

Well, I am glad my semi-necro-bump was able to bring fresh new attention to the OP's seemingly unresolved problem.
I am an idiot, and after closer inspection, my SATA III is running at SATA II speeds because it is a SATA II drive.  I thought that my Mushkin Atlas mSATA SSD (SATA III) was running at 1.5Gbps, but that is actually my optical drive.  My SSD is running at the expected SATA II speed since that particular input is SATA II (which was was indeed aware of).
@OP, if you are still following this thread, I hope your problem is solved.

I am very happy with my Portege R835, except for the sata-issue....severely limiting my SSD speed, as I as many others bought this computer specifically because I thought it supported Sata 3. It is absolutely horrific of Toshiba to limit the sata speeds without telling their customers about it!! They will definitely lose thousands of customers on this rather stupid move of theirs. Unbelievable!! Why ruin such a good computer. Sell customers a Ferrari not telling them it's speed limited to 80mph. Toshiba; be up front about such vital information to your customers!!!

  • SSD Upgrade - SATA III Compatible Macbook Pro 2009

    Hi there,
Just wondering if someone could clarify this for me please:
Looking to upgrade to an SSD, a high end model. I want to spend around £250, but I'm not after lots of GB's as I'll be happy to move my media to an external drive, which is what currently uses 90% of my HDD space.
Anyway, I was looking into the OCZ Vertex SATA III, but after some searching around I'm not sure if the MB Pro has the ability to handle SATA III at 6GB's, so would be totally pointless paying extra for the SATA III capabilities.
Could someone just clear this up for me please, and if anyone could suggest a make/model for me? I'm looking to spend £250 tops, although like I said, i'll settle for little storage space. I'm really after just the quickest one I can find for that price. Looking to upgrade in time for a clean install of Lion, then I can take a lightening quick MB with me when I start med school in September!
    Thanks guys!
    Harrison

Unfortunately, without your actual Mac model how can we tell if it supports 6 Gb/s SATA?  You can check the specs for your model at support.apple.com/specs/.

  • Adding an SSD (SATA III) to HP Elite desktop. Is it possible?

    Dear Experts...
I would like to upgrade my computer adding an SSD drive as a master drive and shifting the original 2TB drive to be a slave.
I found several coices of SSD drives but almost all of them are SATA III interface.
Does my desktop supports this interface? as it is just written that it has a SATA interface without specifying which version of SATA!
How many hard drives could this desktop holds? I already have two (the original 2TB, and my old 256GB drive), and I wand to add one SSD for Windows and progs.
Can I buy this SSD for example? Samsung Electronics 840 EVO-Series 500GB 2.5-Inch SATA III Single Unit Version Internal Solid State ...
This is the official HP specifications page of my Desktop .
Thank you in advance for your help.

    Hi,
It has 2 spare HDD bays as on its specs:
         http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c02781215
You can swap SSD on your machine and make the old HDD as a secondary ("slave") drive. SATA III is backward compatible therefore you can use it. Since SSD's are smaller (normally 2.5") you need something which is similar to one of the following brackets:

  • Xpower Sata III Setup for Boot drive

Hi again, I need help setting up my sata drive now...So far I have set sata 6gbs controller mode to AHCI.
Verfied the Marvell bios recognized my drive correctly and installed windows. Was I supposed to change anything
in the marvell bios(Virtual Disk? Assuming that is for 2 drives for raid)? Now I need to install the drivers for them. Should I install any other drivers first (Chipset, Lan, etc)? Also should I download them from msi or marvell? One thing in the manaual threw me off "Important: Only when you set the "AHCI" mode in the integrated Perpheral menu of mainboard bios setup, you have to install the raid drivers for the sata devices"? What exactly do they mean? Then it goes on to show how to install the drivers for bootable raid array. I kinda get the impression I was supposed to install the drivers via a disk as I was installing windows? Do I need to start over?

well my Marvell controller recognizes my drives, it will let me install windows on them.  but i have no option at in the msi bios that would allow me to select on of these disks for a boot drive.  my only bootable options are on the sata ii ports.  i have tried my ocz sold 3 ssd, my 10k velociraptor, and a 2tb seagte data drive.  no option to boot from them.  and when i boot from my dvd drive to install windows, when i come to the prompt to customize my install, windows tells me that i can not install windows on this drive because the controller is disabled please go into your bios to enable the controller to properly boot and install windows.
this is obviously and issue with the motherboard itself.  at no point and time have i ever had the option to boot from the sata iii controller.  ive owned this mobo for just under a year.

  • P55A-GD65 Can not see Sata III drive

I can not get the bios to see my 250gig sata III. I have it connected to sata#7 white connector.
I tried to first see it, no go. I am trying to fresh install w7 hp upgrade 64bit to my new sata III drive. I can not find the drive. I do not know if it is bad or what?
I set Integrated peripherals- sata 6g/s controller mode to ahci, and in on-chip ata devices raid mode set it to ahci. I tried to install w7 from disc. It just Says I have made a hardware change. Try to do a repair start or start as normal. Then said my boot sector was messed up. I pressed  reset and got into bios and set it all back to ide mode.
It would not start normal. But from page it says try w7 disc etc. I told it to start windows normally it did, I have rebooted So I guess it fixed the boot sector..
I am not sure what to do. I can not find the drive, and no place in my bios can I find the sata 7-8 connectors. they are listed as 1-6 and 9.. everything skips 7-8. I am in w7 now. I could do the reg tweak. I want to fresh install w7 upgrade on my new sata III drive. then nuke this sata II and make it a storage drive..
Maybe I need to press a key with w7 disc in  during restart. I can not figure out how to make Let me reinstall w7. I did press F6 but I did not know what to do. Upgrading from xp was pretty easy. This sata III and  mobo and w7 is a head ake. It is no simple instructions no place to make this stuff work right. Ha ha the manual is no help either.
I do not know if maybe the drive is bad or not. I never had to do this stuff in bios just to install a drive, and then controllers 7-8 show no place. I do not know what to do..

    Follow up.
My cam batteries are acting up. Sorry not better photo'. The second photo. I changed out my speakers set up etc, and its photo was with our cam corder, it has no flash.. The top 5.25 bay filter is a test. I need better materials to make a better 1, but it works well, not so pretty tho. If I relax the pantyhose, It looks a lot better, is black. You can not see through it, but less air flow...
The blower box mod I made from a gutted opt drive, uses the rest of the 5.25 bay cage as the lower sides of the box. The top side, the actual gutted opt drive, I used my zig saw, cut along the sides from the top and back end. So it was free to bend down. You can not see from the photo, but it is down just above the top of the mobo tray, and extends out past the back side of the 5.25 cage. With both downward blowing air and is more compressed or moves faster because the top is bent down etc. I cut off the access on the side so not to go past the 5.25 cage. Made a face plate to mount the fan [can crank 103 cfm] to the other end of the gutted opti. It is easy in out, uses my normal case mounting gear, and is flush with the front of the case. The filter and or front cover are separate. I need to make a better filter frame. But it works. I like it for now.. My twin p160 case has the same set up, but using a 80mm face plate and fan, and being a normal 5.25 opti drive as it base, they can go case to case, most all cases have a 5.25 cage, so. I could use this on the lian li case below and just mount a normal fan filter right to the face plate..>>
Build #2, my buds rig, was a snap to build. Not 1 fault in the entire build from- view reliability history. The large case was nice to work in.. Both systems running great and with AHCI support.

    Rev up your SSDs?

And, will SATA II PM require new cases? Will the 5PM still work, but limited performance?
    Hi,
The SeriTek/5PM enclosure uses a Silicon Image SiI-3726 port multiplier that is limited to a maximum of 250MB/s per enclosure. Multiple enclosures can be used to increase performance. You can see an example of this on the SeriTek/2ME4-E performance page found here: http://www.firmtek.com/seritek/seritek-2me4-e/perform/
As "6G" controller drivers are available with port multiplier support, all SiI-3726 based enclosures including the 5PM will work. The "6G" standard is backward compatible with 3G and 1.5. However, these enclosures will always be limited by the 250MB/s bandwidth limit found in the SiI-3726 PM. When hard disk performance was less than 90MB/s, the 250MB/s limitation was not that big of a deal as it took three hard disks to reach that limit. Now with the Samsung F3 providing up to 140-150MB/s with a single hard disk the port multiplier limit can be reached much sooner.
What the 5PM is really great at is increasing storage capacity. Since a single PM can support up to 5x the amount of disks as a direct connect configuration it will always provide the most disk space. 5 x 2TB = a 10TB enclosure on a single cable. Multiple enclosures can be used when both high capacity and higher performance are desired.
If the user does not need to support lots of hard disks, direct connect enclosures with one SATA cable per hard disk can provide very nice performance with a PCIe 4-lane Mac eSATA controller.
Pick your poison. Both PM and direct connect enclosures should work with "6G" controllers that support PM. What I am more concerned about is the possibility of enhanced Mac eSATA compatibility issues for hybrid enclosures that use eSATA/FireWire/USB or any combination of these multiple ports with the standard AHCI driver.

  • Pcie sata III card

I have replaced the airport card of my mid 2010 iMac with a pcie sata III card which works fine (I can even boot from it) but it takes 3 minutes now for the screen to come up and start the OS.
I believe it is some sort of hardware initialization/negotiation that takes that time. Or maybe the system keeps ckeing for the airport card.

  • S415 SATA Interface - SATA II or SATA III?

Does anyone know what type of SATA interface is available on the S415? Is it SATA II or SATA III?

bridle_post wrote: How do I determine if my HP Pavilion HPE h8-1160 CTO supports SATA III?  HP documentation doesn't seem to be specific about SATA II or SATA III.  Considering an SDD upgrade.  Thanks.
Hello bridle_post. It appears these series of HP systems ships with either an AMD chipset and an Intel chipset.
Both these chipsets in a retail motherboard support Sata lll, but it appears that in the HP motherboard version, Sata ll are only supported.
Here  is a link to the specifications for this system with the Intel chipset, and it shows the specification for the hard drives as 3 GB/s.
Here  is the link to the AMD motherboard, and it also shows 3GB/s.
