How to limit songs being synch'ed to iPod

Hi,
I must be the dumbest guy around. This really should not be that hard.
My total Music Library is 28GB. In the house we have one iTunes Library. My wife, my two girls, and I all share this library. I like Rock, Country, and some of the new stuff that my girls like. My wife, she is into Streisand and also some of the new stuff. My girls are typical teenagers. One likes Country, top 40 and Rap. The other is into Rock.
I created 4 different Smart Playlists. One for each of us. They are sorted by "Last Played". The Smart Playlist use lots of rules to fine tune the selection of music. Each of these smart playlists is over 8GB.
My girls have 8GB iPod Touch's. My wife and I have 2 iPods each. Two 4GB iPods and two 8GB iPods (Older Mini's and Nanos). For simplicity, let's just talk about me and my 8GB iPod. I want to synch to my iPod only that music that is in the my Smart Playlist. And I want it to update each time I connect the iPod. And I want it to sych music that has not been played recently.
When I connect my iPod, I get a message that there is not enough room on the iPod. That is not surprising, as the playlist is bigger than the capacity of my iPod. So, I created a size limited Smart playlist based on my original Smart playlist, but now when I synch, I get an error that the size limited playlist is dependent on a playlist that can not be found.
A nice to have.... What would be cool is if I could set up the iPod touches to synch, Apps first, then photos, and then fill whatever remaining space was left from a specific Smart playlist.
So, any instructions or guides on how to set up our playlists and iPods?

How you delete content from your iPod depends on how it is set up to receive content from your iTunes library whether that be via automatic syncing or manual management.
For automatic syncing, you must reconfigure your settings so that the album/tracks/content you wish to remove is no longer configured to sync to your iPod.  For example, if the Sync only checked songs and videos option is enabled from under the iPod's Summary tab, make sure all the tracks for this album do NOT have a tick mark next to them in your iPod.  Then resync your iPod with iTunes.
If that isn't the case, you'll want to look at the iPod's Music configuration tab.  You can access this tab by selecting your iPod under Devices. This should bring you to the Summary tab over to the right.  Look for the Music tab along the top and select it.  Here you can configure how and what music syncs to your device.  If you make any changes to this tab, be sure to hit the Apply button in the lower right hand corner to sync the updated changes to your device.
Otherwise, if you manually manage your iPod's contents, you must manually remove content from it.  You can do this by plugging your iPod in and clicking the small black triangle next to your iPod from under the Devices section in the left hand pane of iTunes.  This will open up a submenu of content that is indented underneath the name of your device, so go ahead and click on Music (or whatever content you are wanting to remove).  Locate the track or tracks/content you wish to delete. Highlight them and hit the Delete key or choose Edit -> Delete.

By syncing from your iTunes libary. You have to imprt the songs into your iTunes libary
To import music into your iTunes library on the computer go to iTunes>Help>iTunes Help>Add items to iTunes and follow the instructions

My old computer crashed and deleted my iTunes media file with all my playlist. However, my iPod has the playlist I lost on the computer. How can I replace (reverse synch?) my iPod media information back onto my (now reinstalled) virgin iTunes media folder?

Yes it's possible to sync music back from a iPod back into iTunes that (I assume) wasn't purchased on the iTunes Store.
Apple allows iTunes Store purchases on devices to be reversed back into iTunes, just not cd rips and stuff like that. For that it's a one way trip to the device from iTunes.
I likely can't suggest such software here, but if you visit iLounge you can ask what is the latest software that works for your platform.
Really it only takes a mere few minutes to backup your iTunes Library and stick in a few cd/dvd's or a external drive. iTunes even has a menu command for it to make it oh so simple. Please use it and backup all your data.
Hard drives fail, computers burn up, thieves steal, stuff gets forgotten. Plan for something happening because it will.
    Good Luck

  • I have moved my itunes library to a new PC.  All but approximately 100-150 songs will synch to my ipod.  It says "not authorized" but when I authorize it, it says "already authorized"?  I thought possibly they were DRM files, but I can't tell?

Any ideas how to get all my songs synched on the ipod?  They are in my itunes library on the new PC.

    Hi kellmack,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I recommend the steps in this article if iTunes prompts you to authorize your PC to play some purchases after you've already authorized it:

  • My Ipod touch will not synch all songs in my library - on my windows 8 laptop. Doesn't matter if the songs are checked or not - only some songs will synch to the IPOD. I have multiple devices and two accounts.

My IPOD touch will not synch all songs in my library. Library is on a windows 8 laptop. Checking the songs does not matter. I have multiple devices (ipod, IPhone 4 and 5, IPad 2) and two ITunes accounts.

All songs play on the laptop windows 8. The second Ipod touch we have - all songs synch to it and play.
But the first Ipod touch we bought - only half (or so) of the songs synch. So I assume there is an issue with the newer Ipod touch. The songs not synching are songs I added to the library from CD's.

  • Need help, how to transfer songs from iTune library to ipod??

Hi everyone, I just got my iPod this weekend for my birthday. My friend told me to go to "Lime Wire" to get free songs, so I did and the songs went to my iTunes page.
However, for some reason when I tried to download all the songs to my iPod, only one song popped on my iPod. (Weird)
Anyway, how do you get the songs from the iTunes library
to download to the iPod. What am I doing wrong?!
    Thanks!

    Welcome to the discussions,
Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in itunes and transferred your purchases.
There is 3rd party software out there to do what you want, but not supported by Apple, see this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2013615&tstart=0

  • I just bought an Ipod Nano for my husband from a friend. We cannot figure how to add songs. I have an Ipod Touch and everything I pull up on Itunes is dealing with mine...I can't do anything with his Nano. What are we doing wrong?

I purchased an Ipod Nano from someone yesterday. How do I register it in my name and unregister the previous owner. I have a 4th gen Ipod touch and was told I could add songs from my library to the nano but we can't seem to do anything with it. HELP please!!

Connect it to your computer and restore it as a new device. Then chose what music you want to sync with it and do so just like your Touch does.

  • How to get songs out of a used ipod touch then reassign

My son gave his old Ipod touch to his little sister. i think its a 1st gen. He has about 1200 songs and wants to be able to transfer all his songs onto his iphone. Hasn't used it in so long, he doesn't remember his login and password into his old itunes account. I installed itunes onto her computer, plugged in the ipod and the name of the ipod shows but does not show any songs in the library but i know they are in there becuase we can hear them on the ipod. So first, I need to know how to make a backup (on CDs)of all of these songs so that we can transfer them onto his iphone....then to erase them all off of the ipod so that she can start fresh with a new account, etc. To all of you who are much smarter than I....your help is greatly appreciated.

The music sync is one way - computer to ipod.
You will need to move the music from his computer to hers, then sync. You can use the backup copy that should always be maintained to move the music over.
Since the ipod touch will sync with one computer at a time, when you sync to another computer, it will first erase the content from the ipod, then replace with content from the new computer.

  • Why are unchecked albums or songs being added to my ipod?

I've just recently upgrade(and kind of downgrade) from a 32gb ipod to a 8gb iTouch. I'm having the problem of too much music, but not enough space. I'm trying to add certain albums or songs onto my iTouch while not using up all my space. The problem is that my iTunes or my iTouch would add albums I don't want to add on my iTouch (again not enough space). For instance, I have multiple albums by Beyonce but I only want to add one of her albums onto my iTouch from my iTunes library, but it always adds all of her albums. I even unchecked all her albums besides the one I want, but it will still add all her albums onto my iTouch. On my iTouch menu under Music I have sync music selected as (selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres) selected. I don't have it as(Entire music library) selected. I don't know why it's adding unchecked and unselected music onto my iTouch when I sync it.
Can someone please tell me how I can fix this, so that only the albums or songs I want to add onto my iTouch ONLY goes onto my device?

Have a look under Playlists, Artists, Genres, and make sure you haven't checked something there that collects all her stuff. For example, if you had Beyonce checked under Artists, it'll transfer *all* Beyonce music.
As an experiment, uncheck everything in those three lists, so you *only* have checkmarks under Albums.
    Hope that helps

  • How to transfer songs from iPhone 4S to iPod Touch 4G

Hello users of iPhones and iPods etc all over the world...
My mum recently brought an iPod 4G and wants to transfer her songs from her iPhone 4S to this new iPod. I have spent all afternoon trying to work out how to via iTunes and Apple Support, however there is no use - I have tried backing the iPhone up to my laptop and booting it to the restored iPod Touch, however with 3 attempts all failed. Both devices have the latest iOS, so there is no issue there. One thing is that I'm using Windows 8 Asus X501A, however this should not make any difference from if it was a Windows 7 for that fact.
I'm usually quite fluent with my iDevices and technology, but have just gone clueless.
    Many thanks

  • How to play songs in sequential order on iPod touch 4th Gen. ?

How do I play songs in sequential order on a specific album? Some albums should be listened to that way, for example LIVE CONCERTS or concept albums.  I have an Ipod Touch 4th Generation.  I have turned OFF shuffle play, but that did not help.

Arrange them in a Playlist in the proper order and then just play that playlist.

  • My computer crashed. So does this mean I can not add any more music to my ipod from a different computer without all the songs being erased? Can I sync my ipod to a new computer if I allow all the songs to be erased?

My computer crashed. So does this mean I can not add any more music to my ipod from a different computer without all the songs being erased? The ipod works fine and now i got a new computer. So it seems like my only options are leaving my ipod in a state where i cant add anymore songs or erasing all my songs and trying to use my ipod from my new computer. Can someone please inform me on how to have my ipod work from a different computer, even if i have to erase my songs. Thanks.

Yes, if you choose the Erase and Sync option (or restore your iPod) you will be allowed to sync your iPod with the new computer.
If you would like to save the content that's currently on your iPod, see this older thread from another forum member Zevoneer discussing the different ways to copy the content on an iPod back to your PC.

  • Song Won't Transfer to Ipod

    HI,
I was using my Ipod just fine with ALL of my songs on it when it froze. I couldn't even reset my Ipod. I let the battery die out. That reset it. However since then I haven't been able to transfer any songs to my ipod. I restored the ipod and made sure I had the most up to date software on my ipod, and itunes.
Here is what's happening when I dock it. My Ipod is recongized my computer, and itunes. I look to see it if my ipod is being updated with the songs and I can see the songs being transfered to my ipod. I come back after a few hours and Itunes says the "UPDATE IS COMPLETE". However, my Ipod still says "DO NOT DISCONNECT." If I try to eject the Ipod via the Itunes software, Itunes will freeze. If I try to stop it by using the "Safely remove hardware" icon in my tray then the computer tells me that it is updating and should not be disconnected. Even after over night is still tells me the same thing. Once I get it disconnect, either by stopping all the Ipod services or physically disconnecting it, the only thing that is updated is my playlists, but there ane NO SONGS on my Ipod. I have repeated this a couple of times and the results are the same.
    What should I do?

Instead of dragging them from your library to your
iPod, try dragging them from your Podcasts list to
your iPod. Make sure that your podcasts aren't grayed
out. If they are, you will have to click Get in the
Podcasts list. The problem could be that you are
putting them on your iPod before they are fully
    downloaded.
Thanks again. I've now found the five video podcasts I downloaded as a test, but they're still not in "Video Podcasts" on the iPod ... that remains empty. The five were in "Video Playlists" inside the "Videos" list. They're now also under "Playlists" from the first menu. Given that I don't think I did anything to create any Playlists at all, I remain confused ... but at least I've found what I downloaded. I remain convinced that something needs to be clicked -- maybe in "Settings" -- in order to set my iPod straight, but I don't know what. The un-intuitive nature of this situation is frustrating. But I do appreciate your help.
