How to link to aperture managed photos?

I'm working in Motion 5 and have lost the link to some photos now managed in Aperture. Does anyone know how to reconnect the link?  I know I can relocate masters outside of Aperture but would prefer to have them managed. Thanks for any sdvice.  Colin.

Since they're bundled inside of Aperture's Library structure, you'll have to export what you want to use from Aperture first, then use them in Motion.

  • How to choose which Aperture duplicate photo to keep

I use Aperture 3.4.5 on an iMac with OS 10.8.4 and, like many others who have written to this community, I have acquired lots of duplicates because some years ago I  moved from iPhoto to Aperture. Those collections are mostly referenced in their original collections. I quite understand how these duplicates came to be.  Using Duplicate Annihilator - Aperture  I have found a great many (4 thousand) pairs of duplicate pictures out of a library of 60 thousand, and as  has been explained by several responders, usually one is called iPhoto Original and the other iPhoto Externally Edited or iPhoto Edited.  I have never knowingly used an external editor, but I do understand that, in iPhoto, just rotating the photo from portrait to landscape will create a copy, something that does not happen with Aperture.  So that is why the dupliocates exist. My question is basically, now that I have found them, how to choose which one of the two versions to keep, because there seems no reason to keep these duplicates.
Obviously if I have made noticeable changes, or added many key words,  then I want to keep that one. The duplicates in question are in  two-photo Stacks. The original will have  a size of 3 MB or 4Mb and the copy will have a smaller size, maybe  as little as 1.5 or 2 MB.  Sometimes the copy has just been rotated (and the file size is made smaller). With Aperture I can rotate the original iPhoto picture and maintain the larger size. Sometimes (but not always) there is a name change from xxxx to xxxx.jpg.  But even without a name change, the edited or rotated file is smaller.  I have examined the two images at high resolution, in Aperture, and I cannot see any difference, though they have very different sizes.  This surprised me; there seems no benefit from the larger size, though there is a slight shift of the histogram of colors. (I do not plan to print any of these at high resolution, just show them on the iMac or a video.)
So my question is: is it desirable to keep the larger original file, though I do not see a difference in the image on my 27in iMac? I have many of these duplicates to choose between, and I would like to understand the consequences of my choice before I delete things.

I would keep the larger as long as storage space wasn't an issue and if it was I'd look at increasing storage before deleting the larger file.
Think of it this way the larger files contains more data, more data means not only a better image (even if you cannot see a difference on the monitor) but also more options when you go to edit the image.
Cropping is just one obvious example.  A larger file will give you more options when it comes to cropping the image.
You can always create the smaller from the larger, you can;t go the other way. Once you delete the larger file the data is lost for good.

  • Managing photos in aperture

I'm feeling pretty stupid and frustrated.  I just went through and deleted maybe 200 photos that I didn't want.  (Of course, I wouldn't need to do this if all my photos were excellent when I took them!)  I was using Aperture, and of course deleted versions.  Then, I did a batch rename.  What I think I've learned since having done that is that 1) I never deleted the photos I thought I was getting rid of and, 2) that I only renamed them in Aperture and then, it was a version I renamed and not the original.
So, I go to Photoshop to work on the photos...and guess what...everything I thought I deleted is still there (in Photos, which is where I save them) with the original jpg. file name.
If I want to change the original file (like delete it or rename it) is there a way to do that in Aperture, or is my only option using Finder?  The task of going back and redoing everthing I did yesterday is daunting, but I don't think I have a choice.

If I want to change the original file (like delete it or rename it) is there a way to do that in Aperture, or is my only option using Finder?
First of all - don't use the Finder with Aperture! You will be in for a lot of trouble otherwise. If you are using Aperture, let Aperture manage the media files, otherwise you are risking an inconsistent Aperture library. You can and should use Aperture to delete and to rename your files, even the original files.
I am not quite sure about, what you have done exactly and what you wanted to achieve.
I just went through and deleted maybe 200 photos that I didn't want.
How did you delete the images?
So, I go to Photoshop to work on the photos...and guess what...everything I thought I deleted is still there (in Photos, which is where I save them) with the original jpg. file name.
Is your Aperture library referenced, and you can see the original image files in a folder in the "Photos" folder?
To delete images in Aperture reveal them in their project, select them in the Browser, and select "File > Delete Version" or "File > Delete Original Image and all Versions" from the main menu bar, depending on if you want to delete the current version or all versions and the original image file as well. If you did it this way, did you remember to empty the Aperture Trash?
To rename your original files use "Metadata > Batch change" and select a preset for the version name. Then check the button "Apply to Original file". This will rename the originals as well.

  • How to manage photos from multiple accounts

    Hi,
i am trying to solve one problem. I have one iMAC where i have two user profiles connected to different AppleIDs. Next to it there are two iPhones and two iPads. I am trying to find out, how to manage photos from all these devices using one account on iMAC. Second question is if there is any finction in iPhoto that can publish images to NAS server? Second alternative for me is to byu iCloud drive space and use Family sharing for publishing photos. Bellow text schema is attached, it is only my idea and i dont know if this could work like this. Did anyone somehow solved this configuration? Thanks

I can see the screenshot if I double click on it.  However, here is it again.  Being Halloween maybe it'll show.

  • How do I manage photos using a folder - subfolder type structure?

How do I manage photos using a folder - subfolder type structure as I have done previously within Windows? For example, my photos were stored with a folder for each year and sub-folders for each month whicheach  held the photos. Can I do this in iPhoto?

For example, my photos were stored with a folder for each year and sub-folders for each month whicheach  held the photos
    Why bother?
Check out the search box at the bottom of the Window. (Click on the Magnifying glass, it opens it) Now click on the mgnifying glass in the search box) and select 'Date'. Now you can find all the photos from any day, month or year. If you want to find the photos from a range - say a paticular week - then you can do that with a Smart Album.
Organising photos by date means you have to remember the date the shot was taken, and after a while, and after a few thousand shots, this gets harder and harder to do, so you spend more and more time rooting through folders.
iPhoto offers a range of organising tools and each offers more possibilites to quickly find the shot you're looking for. For instance:
I use Events simply as big buckets of Photos: Spring 08, July - Nov 06 are typical Events in my Library. I use keywords and Smart Albums extensively. I title the pics broadly.
    I keyword on a
    Who
    What
Where basis (The When is in the photos's Exif metadata). I also rate the pics on a 1 - 5 star basis.
Using this system I can find pretty much find any pic in my 45k library in a couple of seconds.
So, for example, I have a batch of pics titled 'Seattle 08' and a  typical keywording might include: John, Anne, Landscape, mountain, trees, snow. With a rating included it's so very easy to find the best pics we took at Mount Rainier.
    File -> New Smart Album
    set it to 'All"
    title contains Seattle
    keyword is mountain
    keyword is snow
    rating is 5 stars
Or, want a chronological album of John from birth to today?
    New Smart Album
    Keyword is John
Set the View options to Sort By Date Ascending
    Want only the best pics?
add Rating is greater than 4 stars
The best thing about this system is that it's dynamic. If I add 50 more pics of John  to the Library tomorrow, as I keyword and rate them they are added to the Smart Album.
In the end, organisation is about finding the pics. The point is to make locating that pic or batch of pics findable fast. This system works for me.

  • How to link from another page directly to a photo within a Spry gallery?

I have created a page that has a photo gallery using Donald's tutorial to make a spry photo gallery. I have a need to link to a specific photo in that gallery from another page. I have seen the discussions on how to do this with tabbed panels etc.. but wondering how to do it in this context.

how do you manage photos if you lose the computer your iphone was synced with?

Are you talking about photos that were synced to your phone? If so, the photo sync is one-way: Computer to phone. Apple makes no provision to extract these photos from your phone, you'll have to use third-party software to do so. Note: photos synced to your phone were reduced in resolution for display on your phone, there is no way to recover their full resolution.

  • How Can I Manage Photos?

I have taken 631 photos with my iPhone. I can't seem to copy them from the phone. I can't even sync them with my computer. If I choose a folder to sync the photos to, iTunes tells me this will delete all the photos on the phone.
I'm baffled as to how you can manage photos you take on the phone. Any tips?

Phoney, you have not mentioned if you are on Windows or Mac.
On a Mac, iPhoto (and iTunes simultaneously) pops up and recognizes the iPhone. Ignore iTunes. The photos display on the iPhoto panel. Create an Event and Import Selected Photos (as you would do from a camera or SD Card).
Unmount the unit on from both iTunes and iPhoto and you're done.

  • How to copy and paste a photo in another folder using Aperture?

How to copy and paste a photo in another folder using Aperture?

What do you want to achieve? Do you really want to create a copy of an image, and thus create a second copy of the master image file? You will waste disk space this way.
Usually you would create new versions of an image, if you want versions with different adjustments. Versions do not require much additional disk space. But all versions of an  image have to be in the same project. To create a new version: Main menu bar -> Photos -> Duplicate Version
To create a copy of an image in another project (and to waste the space ) drag the image to another project while holding down the option key. This will create a copy in the other project.
Sofar nobody here could come up with a good reason why one would want to create a copy. I am curious what in your workflow requires you to do that. Would you mind to tell us?

  • I am confused about how to manage photos between my iPhone, iMac and iPad.  How do I avoid using all the storage pace on my various devices?

How do I manage photos between my ipad, iphone and imac without using all the storage on the various devices?

If enabled, iCloud Photo Stream ensures all new photos are sent to all your devices. Then you can simply add the ones you want to each one's Library, and delete any photos you don't want.
One technique is to designate one device as the "master" containing all your photos - probably your iMac, since it is likely to have the greatest available storage - and make sure you have a backup strategy for it. That way, any photos you choose to keep on your iPad and iPhone are redundant copies that can be deleted as you wish, or as required should you need to restore your iOS device. If your iMac breaks and its Library irretrievably lost, the importance of its backup becomes critical. Therefore, consider having more than one backup, and more than one geographical location for them.

  • I moved my Masters, now how can I tell Aperture that my photos have moved?

I just purchased Aperture, and wanted to import my iPhoto photos into Aperture. However, there was not nearly enough hard drive space on my MacBook, so I copied the iPhoto photos onto an external hard drive, and then imported the photos from the external drive into Aperture, keeping the masters on the external. So far, so good. Now I disconnect the external hard drive from my MacBook and attach it to my AirPort, thinking that I would be able to mount the external over my network and Aperture would see that the maters were now on the networked drive. However, now Aperture is saying that it cannot find my master images. So my question is, how can I tell Aperture that my photos have moved? I thought about the relocate master menu item, but I can't to that because I am not actually relocating the images, I am relocating the drive that the images are stored on. Any help would be most appreciated

Reconnect Masters, as opposed to relocating them.
