    You can't. If you had set up MobileMe / Find My iPad on it before it was stolen then you could try locating it either via me.com on a computer or Find My iPhone / Find My iPad on a another device - but that will only work if it's connected to a network and the device hasn't already been wiped and/or MobileMe disabled on it.
    Apart from that you should report it to the police, and as a safety precaution you should also change your iTunes account password, your email account passwords, and any passwords that you'd stored on websites/emails/notes etc.

    I wouldn't have though this device offered tracking, but if it does it wouldn't be through iCloud. You'd have to ask the manufacturers. (And an iPod Touch which hasn't enabled the app can't be tracked.)

    You cannot trace your iPad via its serial number. If you set up your iPad and authorized "Find My iPad" in Settings, you could go to icloud.com, enter your Apple ID, then attempt to find your iPad.
    However, if the the thief isn't connected to a WiFi network, or has reset the iPad, or you didn't authorize "Find My iPad", you're out of luck. It can't be found.
    As for your police, that's not an issue that we can help you with. Some police departments will help. Some won't.

    So I called apple and the guy was more than helpfull. Basically learn from my experience, when u have an I-device with iCloud, turn it on! Even though I didn't install the app find my iPhone, I could still install and find it through iCloud.com. Since I didn't, I'm SOL. Got the ipad free through work, but still am furious and disappointed. Tracking through serial number is possible, but not for just anyone and it involves many hoops to jump through, and a fee. If I had paid for this ipad I probably would pursue that route, but for now it's lesson learned!

    The thief connected to wifi because it notified me where it was but i haven't recieved an email to say that the remote erase has started or anything
    Is my ipad erased?
    I enabled the function and it says pending  until connected to internet, but it must have connected to the internet or I wouldn't have recieved the email saying where it was!
    I have changed my Apple ID password \ iCloud password my email passwords
    I'm just worried and wanted some clarity to say my info has been erased
