I wish to load Mac OS 10.6.3 onto a partition of my Mac OS 10.7 (Lion) in order to connect to various printrs...
I have created set a partition and erased it completely as I possibly can but not enough since my attempts to
load Snow Leopard have failed after many attempts. I understand that this should be possible, but how???

If the Mac originally came with Lion, then you cannot install Snow Leopard. In just about 100% of all cases, you cannot install an OS that is older than what a Mac shipped with.
If your Mac did come with Lion, then the only way you can run Snow Leopard is to purchases the Server version from Apple, and then run it within a virtual machine, such as VMWare or Parallels. Which wouldn't help you at all printing from apps outside the VM.

Made a second partition on my 2010 iMac that had only one Yosemite partition before. I thought it was supposed to wipe out the original partition when creating another one but much to my surprise Disk Utility merely shrank the size of the Yosemite partition. Result: Yosemite 3.9 TB and new partition (that I want to put Snow Leopard onto) is less than 100 GB. New partition shows under devices in Finder. When I insert Snow Leopard installation CD of course I'm told that I cannot install on this computer or at least this partition. When I restart and hold down the option key the only choice I have is the original partition with Yosemite but not the Snow Leopard partition. So...can anyone tell me what to do to get the Snow Leopard OS onto the second/new partition?

That sounds like your disc is unable to install Snow Leopard - what install disc are you using? Is it grey or a white disk with a Snow Leopard printed on it? Grey discs are for a specific model & cannot be installed on other models. If you can provide a copy of the error message we may be able to help (an image or some of the final output may help). We are left assuming it may be a kernel panic.
The white 'cat' disc is a retail version that can be installed on compatible Macs.

That sounds correct - you don't appear to have managed to install 10.6 yet so you can't select that as a boot option.

Boot from your bootable backup drive - restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears. Select the icon for your external drive then click on the downward pointing arrow button.
After the computer starts up do the following:
Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your internal hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Leave DU open and do the following:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the internal drive. Source means the external drive.
This will restore your old system so you can continue using the computer.
An alternative to the above is that after formatting the internal drive restart from the Snow Leopard DVD and install Snow Leopard on the freshly formatted internal drive. You can then restore your Home folder and other applications through the Setup Assistant which will provide an option to restore your files from another Mac or hard drive.

i just recently purchased a mac pro 13.3 inches and it came with lion, but lion doesnt run power pc apps so i went and bought snow leopard because i was addvised by and apple support member that i could install it onto a partition and choose to run it. days later i get the disk and call in but this oither member says i cant. can anyone here tell me how i can do this because i know you can but the apple guys just tell me that its not addvised and send me here. thank you

I'm trying to put Snow Leopard on a partition. I have Lion installed on my main disc and when I try to boot from the snow leopard disc I get the 3 beep sounds. I've done this before I just don't remember how. It won't let me boot from the partition.

If I may suggest installing Snow Leopard on an External HD (USB, preferably FireWire) and then running it from there.

I want to install Snow Leopard onto my external hard drive, but all of my files are on there, and I read that if I do the install, all of the data will be erased.
If I used time machine to back up the files before I do the install, are they at risk of being erased, since they will be back-uped on the external?
This is probably super obvious, but I want to be very careful with this.

I want to use quicken on my lion macbook pro. i tried installing snow leopard into a partition but can't install it. i can't start from the install disk and neither can i just designate the partition as the destination. thanks

Joerel- You may not be able to boot that Mac with that DVD but it should be able to boot from a fully-updated version of Snow Leopard + Combo Update (preferably 10.6.8v2) since that model originally shipped with Snow Leopard. Getting Snow Leopard onto it might be an insurmountable challenge; it depends on your available resources.
You're going to need a Mac that can boot from that DVD or already has 10.6.8v2 installed. You should then be able to clone that other Mac's boot volume over to the partition you set aside on your newer Mac's internal hard drive.
Remember that you will need to use the Combo Updater, not the "delta" update from Software Update, if you want to be sure this will work. The reason for this is that you need to be sure the components for the newer Mac are included in the OS, which the original DVD install obviously does not have and the "delta" updates may not have.

I need my AppleWorks! This is what I've done thus far.
I have a brand new 21.5" 2.5 GHz Core i5 running Lion. I made a 20 Gb partition on which I would like to install Snow Leopard so that I can run my beloved AppleWorks. I NEED the drawing program.
I inserted a Snow Leopard install disk and restarted holding the C key. I get what looks like the Lion version of a Kernel Panic every time. It never goes to the SL disk.
When I just open the SL disk under Lion and try to open the SL install app I get "You can't use this version of the application Install Mac OS X.app with this version of Mac OS X. You have Install (sic) Mac OS X.app 23.1."
I've also tried booting while holding the option key to select the SL cd and I've changed the boot disk in SysPrefs to the SL disk, all with the same kernel panic result.
Any suggestions welcome!

The fact that you can't boot directly into the Snow Leopard disc without a kernel panic suggests that the SL disc you are using is not compatible with your hardware. Did your new machine come with Lion pre-installed and are you trying to use a SL disc that came from somewhere else?
Even if this is the case, there still might be hope. This support page

That indicates that your machine model was introduced before Lion was released, and originally shipped with Snow Leopard 10.6.6. Although it's possible that the hardware was changed for the machines that are now shipping with Lion, there is probably a reasonable chance that the hardware is the same, and that your machine can still run Snow Leopard. You would need the machine-specific OS X 10.6.6 Snow Leopard install disks that used to come with your particular model though - a retail Snow Leopard disc is OS X 10.6.3 and is too old for your machine, and an install disc that shipped with a different model Mac won't work either. If this is your situation I would call Apple, give them your machine serial number, and see if there is a replacement set of Snow Leopard discs available for it.

I bought a used iMac (2011 model, Lion OS X) and I need to install OS Snow Leopard onto a partition I have already created.
I have tried rebooting from the SL installation disk which does not work as the computer only beeps at me (beeps 3x then pause, beeps 3x then pause, etc) whilst showing the white screen with apple logo. I then have had to 'force quit' out of the computer to shut it down to stop the beeping.
I've tried holding down 'C' whilst restarting the computer to bring up the start up disk options & it beeps again in the same screen.
I've read through many threads in forums to try to find a solution but have been unsuccessful in doing so.
Please someone help me?

How do I install Snow Leopard as a partition with Yosemite on a 2001 Mac Mini?

I have owned Mac's on and off since the 80's. I currently own (myself and my kids) a 2008 MBP, iPhone 4 and 4s, 2 old iPhone 3's, just purchased a 2011 Mac Mini and iPhone 6, and my work-from-home computer is a 4 month old MBP.
Several years ago, I upgraded the 2008 MBP to Mountain Lion. Then the one and only game that I have played since around 2001, Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds, wouldn't work on Mountain Lion so I successfully added a 50GB partition and reinstalled Snow Leopard and the game has worked great ever since.
Recently, I gave my son that 2008 MBP, so I purchased the Mac Mini (i5 dual, 8GB memory, 750 HDD) and immediately upgraded it to Yosemite. I proceeded to carve out a 50GB partition and have tried several times to install Snow Leopard to no avail.
After creating the 50GB partition, I rebooted, and held down the option key so I could then have the option install the Snow Leopard onto that 50GB partition - but it just keeps freezes up on me. I even went so far as to try to copy the 50GB off the 2008 MBP onto the Mac Mini and that (understandably) didn't work either.
While I know enough to cause trouble, I am completely flummoxed with this. I've run many searches and haven't been able to find a solution.
Can someone please walk me through the steps to make this work? When I do restart, I don't even see that 50GB drive like I do when I restart the 2008 MBP so I suspect something may be wrong from the get go. In Disk Utility, it shows the 2 partitions just fine, but not on reboot/restart with the option key held down.

Let TimeMachine make a full backup of your ML installation to a different external drive. Then turn of Time Machine.
In Disk Utility, use the + sign at the bottom of the ML partition to add another GUID, HFS+ Journaled partition for Snow Leopard. Resize to taste. Name it differently from your ML partition. Exhale.
Now ideally, you would like to reverse the external clone and put it back into the new SL partition. Then fix permissions. And demonstrate that you can boot into individually stable OS X installations. This would save you alot of work. Resist copying your home directory into ML just yet.
If you cannot successfully achieve the preceding paragraph, you will be faced with a full SL and application reinstall.
The ~/Library contents for SL and ML are sufficiently different that you do not want to mix them. You may want to salvage Safari bookmarks.plist. And, ML created folders in the home directory may have different permissions or ACL settings than in SL. So, my rule of thumb would be to copy folders that you created in SL, and only the contents of matching named OS created folders such as Music, Pictures, Downloads, etc.
For each operating system, you probably want the Time Machine settings to exclude the opposite OS X partition. If you use the same host name in Sharing prefs, then you will mix SL and ML backups on the same Time Machine back up drive. If you use different host names, they will be distinct folders in the Time Machine backups.backupdb and allow discrete restores per host. You may also want to gag Spotlight from indexing the opposite OS X partition.

I can't load Snow Leopard on an empty partition

In February I bought a new Mac Book Pro that came loaded with OS X Lion. I want to run Final Cut Pro on it. I bought FCP on ebay but can't load it because it is a PowerPC app and Lion won't load it.
I added a partition to my hard drive to load Snow Leopard, bought SL online and am trying to install SL.
If I try to run the install app from within Lion I get this message: "You can't use this version of the application install Mac OX X.app with this version of Mac OS X." Then in small print this: "You have Install Mac OS X.app 23.1"
If I try to boot from the SL Install DVD I get this message: "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button until it turns off, then press the Power button again." I do this and it always comes back to this same message.
I tried booting to the Recovery HD but can't get that to allow anything either.
Is there a way to get this running? Or have I wasted a lot of money?

If you purchased the current model of MacBook Pro, then to the best of my knowledge it cannot boot from Snow Leopard. You would have to run Snow Leopard as a virtual OS under one of the virtualization solutions (Parallals Desktop, VMWare Fusion, or VirtualBox). There's been debate about whether the desktop version of Snow Leopard is licensed for such use, but the developers of the solutions believe that it does not and hence allow installation of Snow Leopard Server, which is licensed for virtualization, only.
