Hi, I am trying to lock a single layer so it cannot be changed — is Ps CS4 unable to do this?
I highlight the layer in Layers Pallet.
Then the Lock icon is grayed out:

I have a simple project with various text layers moving up from the bottom and gently landing in position. There is also a style face blur going on so the text starts out blurred and becomes clear as the text lands. As I duplicate a layer in the group for a new line of text, then slide the new layer downstream a bit, the blur keyframes don't move to the layer's new position. They stay in the original position. Anyone know how to lock these keyframe to the original layer?

There's quite a bit of strange behavior with text I'm noticing as I was trying to figure out a workaround.
Using the gaussian blur filter didn't work as it should. It works fine on the base layer but when you duplicate the text layer with the blur, it's visibly cropped for no reason (crop is not checked, and the fixed resolution changes nothing). It's as if the act of duplicating a text layer breaks the gaussian blur filter. The only solution was to delete the filter and reapply.
I also tried using a Ramp behavior to adjust the face blur in the Styles tab. Once again it worked fine on the initial layer. But when I duplicated the text layer, the duplicate Ramp behavior was there, but lost it's connection to the parameter it was applied to. I had to reattach it.
Definitely some strangeness there. Also, if you animate the blur with keyframes as the OP did, and then duplicate the layer, the copy will have keyframes in that parameter, but not at that point (even if you haven't repositioned the layer). If you then select Previous Keyframe from the animation menu of the duplicate, the playhead disappears from the GUI. That's definitely in bug territory.

Background (main) layer has a padlock which "Indicates layer is partially locked".

I agree. Saw that in another recent thread, and it was news to me. Do not know if its a new addition, but I do not recall it in my older versions. It does not work in PS CS2.

Apple changed the save behaviour several times in the past few versions of MacOsX - there is a good article about this:

The trouble is, you should (I know, not much of a help to you at this point) always create backups AND work with versions. So save many versions (x1, x1a, x2, x2a, etc), because when you work within one master file you run the risk of these type of accidents and there is always a tiny change your file becomes corrupt for some external reason. You never know. Disk space is cheap, losing your work is often a real hassle, and can become very problematic when dealing with clients.
So, save many versions, and make backups of your work. And never NEVER open your original files in any other software - always use a duplicate. You never know what that software might do to your files.
Anyway, have you tried searching for the file name on your mac? Maybe, just maybe there is a duplicate lying around somewhere with the layers intact.

I like to retrieve a file from the FTP server using Apache Commons Net libraries.
for example if the file size is 20MB. When the file is in the progress of copying or transferring from the FTP server i need to lock the local file which is in our local directory so that no other process will use the same local file which is in the process of copying otherwise partially copied files will be used by another process.
the file should be locked when it was in the progress of copying from the server. I have an automatic process which will access file objects at certain time and try to process the files.
I like to know the simplest and easiest way to lock and unlock a file object locally which is trying to copy a file from the FTP server which is of huge size.
And also i like to know how to lock and unlock a file in general?

I will +1 Pixelan's products. They are great, simple, and have about the best support that I know of. When you explore, say Pixelan's SpiceMaster, dig deeply. Things appear rather mundane, on the surface, but there is so very much power lurking, just below the surface. I could almost imagine a 1000 page manual to cover every possible aspect of that program... Every time that I use it, I learn something new, and wonderful.

There is a somewhat clunky way to do it. First, go into your mail (Settings - Mail/Contacts/Calendars) and turn off (dont' disable) any accounts you don't want to be seen. Then go into Restrictions - Accounts and select "Don't Allow Changes." This will prevent anyone from turning the mail back on. When you're ready to turn it back on, go into Restrictions and either Disable Restrictions or go into Accounts and select Allow Changes.
