How to login as root in mountain lion?

i've already enabled the root function in directory utility.
i CANT find how to login as root user. in login window there's just the one for my admin account.
please help, i want to change the name of my home folder..
[p/s: i've done this previously in snow leopard]

Well, i have the same problem, and the solution you suggest kinda works...
If i log out and try to login again then it works as expected.
Meaning that if the setting is set at "Name and password" you get 2 empty fields
and if it's set to "List of users" (with root user enabled) i get 2 circles (one with my user name and a second one marked as other, so i can log in as root).
But this only happens when i log out and try to log in again.
If i restart the Mac or shut it down and open it again, then this setting is ignored and all i am getting is one circle with my main account to log on!!!
Could this be a ML bug?
I even upgraded to 10.8.1 today, but that didn't fix things!
Any ideas?
Thanks.

How do I print my iCal (Mountain Lion 10.8.5) in a 5x7 format? 5x7 is not listed as an option in the print menu.

For custom print sizes, see the software called Clickbooks: http://www.bluesquirrel.com/products/cbmac/
I would ask them if what you want is possible before purchasing.  A customer of mine got it to make many other custom formatted pages.   Don't have them anymore, but they I'm sure could tell you if it is possible.  Be sure to also indicate your printer model.

  • How do I download Safari for Mountain Lion?

How do I download Safari for Mountain Lion? It's not in the App Store, it is nowhere on the Apple website . . . OK, so I guess it is supposed to be part of Mountain Lion, but I am running Mountain Lion and whatever version of Safari I ended up with would not even run at all . . .  so I trashed it (or at least what part of it I was allowed to trash) and though reinstalling it would be a good idea . . . but I can't find one to reinstall. The latest version I can find is for Leopard, and of course that won't run.
Not to mention that since getting Mt Lion, iPhoto won't run . . . it produces an error message saying I need to check with the developer to make sure it runs with this version of OS X! So I wonder who the developer of iPhoto is, who produces software that is incompatible with Mt Lion???
And even in submitting this there is no option to tag it for any OS later than 10.7.4!!

Since Safari is crashing, post a crash report...   reinstalling the OS X rarely helps a browser crash issue.
If Safari has just crashed, press the Report button on the CrashReporter dialog box to view the crash  information.
Copy/paste the entire contents of the Crash Reporter window into your reply. If the crash report dialog does not appear or the crash is hard to reproduce, crash logs can be retrieved from the ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter> folder.

The Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody through the Mid 2010 White Unibody model 7,1 can run 10.8 Mountain Lion."
Why?  Good question.  I am a strong believer in not upgrading just because something new comes out, especially if you are running older equipment.  I would say unless you see a need for it, just stick with Snow Leopard until something comes along that absolutely requires Mountain Lion.

Try going to the web based site and see if you can set up a temporary folder there. Move anything you don't want to download to that folder.

  • How come, ever since I installed Mountain Lion, my computer is slower???

How come, ever since I installed Mountain Lion, my computer is slower???

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive may be failing.
Launch the usual set of applications you use when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. What approximate values are shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec?
    Step 2
You must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way as above. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Post the 50 or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out before posting.

How to fix slow mail in mountain lion in a easy way

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Quit and relaunch Mail, and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Post your results.
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

Usernoted was continually crashing and eating up memory. I clicked on it in the activity monitor and it took me to a place where I could turn it off. Without thinking I did so. I think I turned it off in the console or the terminal. I don't remember exactly what was written. I just clicked  to allow it to be turned off. Since then I cannot upload anything to facebook directly from my imac or from safari when I use share. But iI still get facebook notifications in the notification center. I have restarted and even shut down and then restarted and also logged out and in and I still can't share.

Update2: There is something very wrong with wireless on mountain lion recovery. I don't know what the problem is, but this link may explain:
    http://osxdaily.com/2012/08/10/os-x-mountain-lion-10-8-1-beta-released-for-dev-t esting-may-include-wi-fi-fix/
Wireless recovery would start out with over 25 hours estimated and kept on failing. It turns out to be a two step process of downloading a few Mbytes then a 4Gbyte .dmg file, but I couldn't even download the Mbyte file. I bought the thunderbolt to gigabit ethernet adapter, plugged it in, restarted recovery and download of a little more than 4Gbytes took less than an hour. My limiting factor was probably comcast home internet rate of 12Mbps. The wi-fi wireless connection should be able to do over 100Mbps, so wireless shouldn't be much slower than wired, except wi-fi wireless is broken. Now that ML is installed and updated, wi-fi seems fine now, as I am using it right now, but I haven't tried downloading a big file yet.
Don't use wi-fi wireless for Mountain Lion recovery.

  • How many times can you reinstall Mountain Lion?

Since I bought the Early 2013 15" MacBook Pro retina laptop used only 17 battery cycles on it now (2.7 with 16GB ram running Mt. Lion) computer I have not reset it. I spoke to Apple and it is registered in my name, I made a new Admin. account and password and Apple had me delete the original owners. I took off anything he had left on it. Applecare also I bought in my name. Apple said I didn't have to reset it and would be fine so I left it. They deauthorized the previous iunes account and the previous owner gave me his ID to deauthorize the computer. It was already deauthorized when I checked. He then changed his password for his security. It runs beautifully and has a Samsung screen.
I deleted the iLife apps and were going to buy them in my name (as his ID came up for updates) but now can't redownload in my name as it says I need Maverick OSon it to do so. I left the Mountain Lion 10.8.5 on it. If I contact Apple will they give me a redemption code for my name or how do I get older versions?
If I reset to new how many times am I able to reinstall Mountain Lion? If I decide to sell it later will I be able to reset it again with no problem for the new owner?
Thank you for your help. This forum is a source for many of us new owners to solve things.

As long as you do the download with your Apple ID, it'll be in your name. Reverting back can be a little involved. If you have that in mind, you should make a full backup of your clean install of ML and save it somewhere. Then you can just copy the image back with Carbon Copy Cloner. External drives are cheap, that's how I'd do it.

  • How do I do I install Mountain Lion on a new, blank SSD?

I've ordered a SSD for my MacBook Pro.  I don't want to copy my hard drive to the new drive.  How do I install a new system on a blank SSD when you need to have at least some type of system runnning to run an update or install from the App store?  Thanks!

Well, first you're going to have to format the drive. I would suggest buying an inexpensive USB enclosure for your old hard drive (OWC has tons of them - and I have three that I purchased from OWC). Then install your SSD into your hard drive bay and put your old hard drive into the enclosure and boot from your old drive. Then you can format your SSD using Disk Utility from your old drive.
Now as to installing ML on that new SSD. Since you'gve already purchased it, you can download it to your old HD before you even begin switching out drives. After it downloads, it will try to install. Quit the installation and you'll have a file named "Install OS X Mountain Lion.app" in your Applications folder. You can use this app to install ML on your new SSD.
Pretty simple, really - sorry of I make it seem complicated. I'm assuming that you're going to start 'clean' on this SSD and not clone your old HD to your SSD? You can do that, if you like... see https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4741.
    Good luck,
    Clinton
