how can i perform a search on my external hard drive on my mac pro os x 10.9.2 ?

Mac OS X 10.9.2 is 12 years newer than 9.2.x.    You need to make sure that Spotlight has indexed the external hard drive by adding it and removing it from Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Spotlight -> Privacy.   Check the menu for it:
to determine if indexing is still going on, as it will say indexing.
Alternatively, you can use a non-Spotlight tool, such as:
    http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/
    http://www.devontechnologies.com/products/freeware/ - EasyFind
http://www.osxbytes.com/ - iFileX (note the MacUpdate link provided on osxbytes page has a Malware advertisement for MacKeeper, do not download).
http://www.barebones.com/ Textwrangler has a Search file for content, which works on any Text file.

  • How do I get data from a pc external hard drive to my mac

I am about to purchase an Air. I have an external hard drive I have used for years with my PC.  It has countless pictures and music.  How can I get that data from my PC external drive to my new Air and also to the Time Machine?

Thank you for your reply.  It is a Western Digital external USB 3.0 formatted for PC.  It includes pics, videos, music, documents, power point, etc.  would it still just be a drag and drop?
    Thanks!

  • HT4796 how do i transfer data from my external PC hard drive to my MAC?

  • How can I transfer files from an old PC hard drive to my Mac?

I have an old PC from which I removed the hard drive.  It is an old WD 40 circa 2001.  I would like to transfer all my old documents and pictures to my IMAC.  I obtained a USB Universal drive adapter from OWC, but I can't get my IMAC to recognize the drive.  Can anyone help me.

    angelpup wrote:
It just doesn't recognize the drive.  Will the first solution you provided work?  The drive has been physically removed from the PC.
It should work with your Mac.  If you have access to a PC, plug it in and see if it can be read, and if so just copy the files to a flash drive to transfer to your Mac (Better than spending your day trying to get your Mac to read it for a 1 time transfer of files)
The problem could very well be that the adaptor you got from OWC is defective.

  • How do you  add 5th and 6th  e-sata hard drives INSIDE a Mac Pro?

My Mac Pro 3 GHz 4 core has 4 internal e-sata drives. I would like to add a 5th and 6th drive using the two extra e-sata connections inside the Mac Pro. These can be piped outside using a NewerTechnology cable making it possible to add two extra e-sata drives.
However, I am finding this unreliable. Often the drives fail to show up on the desktop and it seems that the cables and extra connectors are the likely problem. Does anyone make something that will hold an extra 1 or 2 drives inside the MacPro and make use of the two extra e-sata connections?
    Thank you.
    John Wawrzonek.
PS My new e-mail is [email protected]

I also use the extension cable to a socket plate on the rear of the Mac Pro to add an additional external SATA drive.
    The system works great
    however
The external drives are lost if the system is relaunched say as a result of a Safari install.
TO get access back to the external SATA drive I have to power off the Mac Pro and restart the Mac Pro (leaving the external drive powered up).
Once I realised why I was losing access to the external drive I just build in a power off into the sequence instead of a relaunch of the system. - Unless I know I will not be using the external drive during that work session.

  • How to look at a Mac hard drive using another Mac

The motherboard in my G5 iMac recently bit the dust, so I removed the hard drive and installed it in my external inclosure. When I access the old hard drive from a newer Mac to retrieve the information I didn't have backed up, it sends me to the file on the "new" Mac, {If I try to go to "Documents" on the old hard drive, it takes me to "Documents" on the new Mac} If I click on the External "Mac HD" in Finder, then select "Applications" - it deselects the External "Mac HD" & shows the "Applications" folder on the external hard drive {I have some apps on the old one that aren't on the new one} but when I click on iPhoto, it takes me to iPhoto on the new Mac - How do I access the files on the old hard drive?

If you have an external hard drive connected to your Mac, it should show up in the sidebar of your Finder window, just like a mounted server on a network. So if you select that external drive, it should show you the contents of the drive, including all folders and files that aren't normally invisible. From that starting point, you should be able to navigate to whatever folder or file you want on the external drive.
Don't be fooled into thinking you can click on the folders or files listed in the normal Finder window and expect them to take you where you want to go, or do what you want to do.

  • How much Ram can my Macbook use?  What Hard drive should I upgrade to?

    Hi Everyone.
I have a 2008 ish macBook with 4gb of Ram.  I use vmware Fusion to run Windows every day and I also use Aperture on a regular basis.
I'm looking to breath some life into this old machine and want to know how much ram the motherboard will support.  Here are the machine's specs.
    Hardware Overview:
      Model Name:          MacBook
      Model Identifier:          MacBook4,1
Processor Name:          Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed:          2.4 GHz
      Number Of Processors:          1
      Total Number Of Cores:          2
      L2 Cache:          3 MB
      Memory:          4 GB
      Bus Speed:          800 MHz
      Boot ROM Version:          MB41.00C1.B00
How muck Ram will the machine support?
My Hard drive is also nearly full and I would like to upgrade to a 500gb drive.  Any suggestions on which drive to choose?
    Thanks!!

You can install up to 6 GBs of RAM. There are any number of good choices for a hard drive replacement. I suggest visiting OWC for information on pricing, makes, and models. They also provide video tutorials on how to replace a drive in MacBooks.
To prepare for the upcoming release of Lion I also suggest spending $29 to buy a Snow Leopard DVD and upgrade your OS.

  • HT1727 how do I transfer my iTunes from an external hard drive to a different computer?

How do I transfer my iTunes from an external hard drive to a pc?

If you don't have all of your music files within the iTunes Music folder structure, simply moving all of your music to a new location will not result in your iTunes library automatically updating the file paths to all of your songs appropriately. If you have a few other locations in which you store your music, you can take the ExportImport script turingtest2 wrote, make the modifications below, export the results, paste them into Microsoft Word or Excel, do a Find and Replace with the correct file location, and then import the new locations. To use the script, follow turingtest2's instructions on this thread as posted on Dec 19, 2012 6:28 AM.
Note that the modifications, while they worked for me, show my lack of experience with VB as the progress bar will no longer work. Definitely be sure to back up your iTunes library file before executing the script with the below modifications, but doing this for 3500 items didn't even take 2 minutes for the script to run.
    Line 89 was:        Prog=True
    Line 89 is now:     Prog=False
    * I had to do this because otherwise the progress bar was erroring out. So, i just turned it off.
    Lines 164-165 were:
'File.WriteLine "<#>" & .Location           ' Not so useful if working with missing tracks
    'File.WriteLine "<Album>" & .Album
Lines 164-165 are now three lines (the middle one is the only uncommented line):
'File.WriteLine "<#>" & .Location           ' Not so useful if working with missing tracks
    File.WriteLine "<Location>" & .Location
    'File.WriteLine "<Album>" & .Album
Finally, insert this whole block around line 270 so that it looks similar to the others:
            Case "<location>"
If T.Location<>Value Then                ' Don't update if value won't change
                T.Location=Value
                U=U+1
                Trace T,"Updated Location"
              Else
                V=V+1
              End If
'If Trace Then MsgBox "Updated Location"
Note that I had to comment the very last line as well or else the program errored out. You won't be able to trace the results either.
Just thought I'd share this in case anyone else needed something like this.

  • How do i intall mountain lion on a new hard drive

    How do i do it?
I bought a new 13" MBP a few weeks back and have now got my SSD. I realise that Apple no longer give out OS install discs and i don't have mountain lion purchased on my app store as it came with my laptop. So how do i install mountain lion on my new hard drive without having to buy mountain lion.

Option 1  - Newer Mac's like your come with internet recovery. Which means if your drive fails or is corrupted or in your case your install a brand new drive, internet recovery will let you reinstall the OS you are eligible for. So replace your drive and boot your system with cmd + R keys pressed down for 15 secs or so and your machine hooked to the internet. This will install ML from apple in your case.
Option 2 - Clone or backup (your entire system using time machine) your hard drive to a external USB disk. Replace your drive and then restore the new drive from the clone or backup.

  • How can I make a backup to an external hard drive from iPhoto if it won't open?

how can I make a backup to an external hard drive from iPhoto if it won't open? I just wan't to make a backup to my pictures not my entire computer so how does Time Machine work on that?

you could also clone the drive or volume, or just some of the user folders. look for carbon copy cloner, then enable the "use checksum to insure file integrity."
you can have multiple iPhoto Library catalogues in different locations.
Continue to use TimeMachine and make sure it has 350% or more capacity than your system and data.

  • How do i copy my files from my external hard drive onto my imac

how do i copy my files from my external hard drive onto my imac

You should be able to 'migrate them' without having to do so during a reinstall, from an external drive. In some cases, you may be able to use TimeMachine software even if the drive had not been used as a backup.
The usual way, though, is to drag & drop copy from one to another (volume or folder) you created in there and have open. Or drag an item on top of the icon of a hard disk drive when it is mounted on the desktop. I'm used to working with open folders and windows, because that works best; and then see if I want to change how things look inside their destination. This helps should I later want to burn them to a DVD and have it correct. And I want to know where they are.
I had more links to some information about importing or migrating data into a Mac from an external, a week ago, but can't find them now. A few good links to pages, but I think I posted what I did find directly to answer someones question about it; and believe the info was in an Apple Support article about TimeMachine, near the lower part of the page with blue words with a disclosure triangle, so you could read more in that page. But I don't believe these two are correct in that TimeMachine (some versions) only allow wireless backup to a drive in a base station unit such as Apple sells, for this. The link I saw simply said how to work around not using the wireless stuff. Maybe it was a dated item, not in these?
See a main general portal to TimeMachine support,
    here: http://www.apple.com/support/timemachine/
Or basics that may not provide optional copy methods:
Mac Basics - Time Machine backs up your mac:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
Perhaps a search of Apple Support database (or even ASC discussions?) would yield ideas, and perhaps find what may work for the kind of files you want to copy, and where they can be found & used later. Are the files for specific applications? Or images, music, etc?
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • How do I find my photos on my external hard drive backed up using Time Machine?

How do I find my photos on my external hard drive backed up using Time Machine?
My hard drive died so this is my only storage. The hard drive was from an early 2008 Macbook Pro.
I had recently installed Snow Leopard.

If they’re in an iPhoto library, look in the Pictures folder of your home folder first. Otherwise, they’ll be in the location corresponding to the one you saved them to.
