How to look up a wireless client via MAC address

One of my AirPort Expresses shows a wireless client whose MAC address I don't recognize. Is there some utility that will show me info (manufacturer, etc) of a wireless MAC address?
Also, under what conditions would one choose to set up the Wireless Mode of an AirPort Express (Extreme) to "Extend a wireless network" and when would you choose "Participate in a WDS network"? The help files don't explain this stuff very well.

If the "g" Express is set to "join", it does not extend the wireless signal, it receives the wireless signal as if it were a computer. The idea behind "join" was to provide a means for users to stream AirTunes to a remote location with an amplifier and speakers.
If you are not using it to stream AirTunes, there's really no reason to have it powered on. As you have probably discovered, the ethernet port on the "g" Express is not active.
You'll need to recheck some settings on your main base station, the Extreme to make sure that it is setup correctly. Open AirPort Utility, click Manual Setup and click the Wireless tab below the icons. Just make sure that there is a check mark next to "Allow this network to be extended". Update to save any changes.
The "n" Express should be configured using AirPort Utility, Manual Setup, Wireless tab. Check that your Wireless Mode is "extend a wireless network" and make sure there is a check mark next to "allow wireless clients".
As you have discovered, the ethernet port is also active on the "n" Express when you have it set to "extend" and it will also stream AirTunes. Great features on the "n" Express.
You might think about adding another "n" Express to extend to another area.
Ethernet is always the best choice for speed and stability if you are able to hide the wire through the house. If it's not feasible to run an ethernet cable, take a look at ethernet powerline adapters.
You would use a pair, one device at the Extreme end and one at the other end where you want the signal to go. These devices use the home wiring to transport an ethernet signal and they work very well. Not quite as good as straight ethernet, but close and far better than wireless overall.
I bought a pair from DirecTV to setup the On Demand service because I didn't want to crawl through a hot attic to run an ethernet cable from my office router to the DVR. Much faster than wireless...and I previously had a very good wireless connection between my Time Capsule and the Express I was using to extend.
Hope you get things figured out soon.

I have an eee 901 using the zeneee901 kernel. I got wireless to work out of the box to an extent. This will probably be easier to exlain just posting the commands.
    ifconfig ra0 up
    iwlist ra0 scan

    dhcpcd ra0

This wouldn't be so bad except I can'tuse Wicd. This was happening way before I installed Wicd btw.
    What's the deal?

R00KIE wrote:The way you do it I don't know, but in wicd you can select an option to associate by essid instead of mac address and it works fine for me.
Someone else might be able to answer your question. Maybe you can consider using another network connection manager, would makes things easier. Although knowing why it doesn't work is also good
That's good, but I can't find that option. Where is it?

  • Problem: The  wireless  client Obtaining IP address.

Problem: The  wireless client Obtaining IP address.
    Setup.
I have a fiber circuit which feedes my Wan port. Then
I made a local network that then I branch off to five other AirPort Extremes.
Acting as access points with a static IP for local network, with no security enable and extending the wireless network name is off.
With both types of models, the new & older all extreme models.
    Sym:
I can reset the head end airport router with will fix the problem for a day or so.
Question:Can the wireless client cause this type of problem. the reason I asked, everything was working fine for the last 2 two years until I added a new access point. I have change it out with another unit which did not help the dhcp problem.
So my thinking either my head end router is starting to go bad with DHCP or a wireless client interaction may be locking up DHCP until I restart the router again.
Has any one had the same type of problems with DHCP???

    Thanks for the quick response.
The first option sounds like I need some  type of wireless software which at the moment I'm not utilizing so don't know how to do that.
option 2 also sounds foreign to me ! ;-)
Can you add some details or point me to any links you can ref me to so I can try to familiarize myself with these options ?

  • Restricting access via MAC address?

    Hello,
Could someone please tell me how to restrict access to my wireless network (and internet sharing) by only allowing computers with a certain MAC address to join?
    I'm kinda stumbling around here
    Thanks,
    Jonny

Sorry if I wasn't being specific enough...
I have my eMac set up as a Software Base Station, which streams internet & Airtunes to an Airport Express. I have it set up this way, because my ADSL modem is connected via USB (so it's a bit of a workaround). As a result, I have Internet Sharing switched on, so I can access it from all my other macs.
What I want to do is to stop other people from accessing my eMac's internet connection. If I set up a WEP password for Internet Sharing, I lose my Airtunes facility... so I was thinking another way might be to restrict access to the connection via MAC address. I only want my other airport card-equipped macs to access the internet connection and network generally.
    Surely it's possible?

  • How do you ADD a Wireless Client PC to your Airport wLan?

If no security is enabled on the airport extreme 802.11n
PCs and Macs can get online easily
As soon as I enable WPA or WPA2
my macs can get online using the password
my PCs want a network Key of a specific length and hex format
and my airport utility app offers a phenomenally long 'equivalent' network password which does not make any of my PCs happy...
There is also an option of adding a wireless Client (a menu item in the airport utility app) but it closes the page as soon as I click on the menu item - I have NO ACCESS to this feature... something of a bug in airport utility version 5.2.2
the option is supposed to be add a Client using a PIN or simply add the first client to connect... NEITHER of these features work - the airport util software simply refuses to load that config page!
    what gives?
    how can we solve this?

Here's a wonderful piece of info that could help all of us...
Many wLan cards on the PC side don't seem to like WPA2
so you can resolve that issue by selecting WPA in the Airport utility
If you are using WPA / WPA2 on the airport extreme
    then... go grab a PC
yes, I said a PC... ARE YOU LISTENING APPLE?
on the PC, you need to install the software that came with your Airport Extreme 802.11n... it looks the same as the SW on your trust Mac
but the thing is, it actually works when you want to ADD a new Wireless Client to your network.
now... when the PC has the software up and running and you can see your Airport extreme - ADD A WIRELESS CLIENT but don't use the PIN method - that method failed 5 out of 5 times I tried... Use the First Attempt method..
You will likely get an error but ignore it and go to the wLan connection app in your windows taskbar (bottom right side) you will want to VIEW Wireless Networks available to you.
If you see your airport, great, click the CONNECT button and the app will ask for your NETWORK KEY
Just enter your Wireless Password (the same one you used to configure your Airport Wireless Security on the WIRELESS page of the Airport Utility)
then click connect and voila... all 6 of my PCs were able to access via WPA
I am stunned that I wasted so much time with this
and concerned that Apple's software acts differently on the PC allowing me to ADD users whereas the Mac application simply would not load the page
in case you are wondering I used the following versions for this time wasting exercise
    Mac: Airport Utility v5.2.2
PC: Apple Airport Utility for Windows v5.0
gosh what fun this has been
on the Mac ADDING a wireless Client failed (see my post earlier)

  • How to modify Time Capsule wireless clients?

I have a Time Capsule that I use as the router for the house. We've had a lot of computers connected to it over the years. What I am wanting to know if it is possible to remove wireless clients that are connected or previously connected. Under Finder there is an HP computer that is connected but to my knowledge there is no Windows based computer using the network. At one point there was an old HP laptop connected to it. But for the life of me I can not find anything or figure out how to remove this computer from showing up under the Finder. I am confident that the problem resides at the router because I can see that same device connected.

Maybe you have an HP printer that is connected either by wireless or Ethernet?
Does the HP device show up in the list of current wireless clients? If not, then the HP device is connected via Ethernet to your network.
What I am wanting to know if it is possible to remove wireless clients that are connected or previously connected.
If a wireless device is already connected to the network, the only way that you can remove it is to change the wireless network password, or set up Timed Access on that device..
Chaging the password will disconnect all connected devices, then you will have to log on again from each device that you want to connect.

  • How do I add a wireless client in Airport Utility V. 6.0?  Option missing?

I am trying to add a wireless client to my Airport Extreme base station, version 6.0.  In previous versions, there was an option under "Base Station" to add a wireless client, but that seems to have been taken away.  First, why, when it seemed to be the perfect place for it?  Second, where was it moved?  I need to re-add my bridge after a power failure and it is SO frustrating!!

Suggest that you download and install the more functional AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion , which was available on the same day as AirPort Utility 6.0. It seems that a number of users have missed this.
You can keep both 5.6 and 6.0 on your Mac and use the one that you want. But, since 6.0 is now part of the Lion operating system, you cannot delete this application.

  • Locate wireless client by IP address ?

Is there a easier way to locate a wireless client by ip addrss in a WISM controller or even via WCS ?
I now go to the home page of my controller and go to the client section and filter by mac address , AP names, etc. once I find that, I  drill in and I can find the IP address listed then, but what if I have a wireless client IP only ? I'm running version 5.2.193.0 on the WISM controller.  My WCS is a level 6.x.
I trying to locate a wireless client which I believe is sending spam but unless I go into every profile connection, how can I locate this client ?
    Thanks all

  • How to assign static ip via mac address on LINKSYS WRT54G2

? how do i assign an ip per mac address with this router? i can't seem to find the option and its becoming a real pain
on my buffalo router i can paste a mac address and assign and ip for each mac on my network

The feature that you are looking for is called "DHCP reservation".  This feature is not available on the WRT54G2.  Several of the newer Linksys wireless n routers support this feature.
You can assign your computer a fixed (static) LAN IP address, however, you will need to do it manually.  Linksys has some very specific rules about assigning fixed LAN IP addresses.  Be sure to follow them carefully.
Rules for using fixed LAN IP addresses on Linksys routers:
With Linksys routers, a fixed (static) LAN IP addresses must be assigned in the device that is using the address. So you need to enter the fixed address in the computer or printer, not in the router.
When using a Linksys router, any fixed LAN IP address must be outside the DHCP server range (typically 192.168.1.100 thru 192.168.1.149), and it cannot end in 0, 1, or 255.
Therefore any fixed LAN IP address would normally need to be in the range of
    192.168.1.2 thru 192.168.1.99 or
    192.168.1.150 thru 192.168.1.254
assuming you are still using the default DHCP server range.
Also, in the computer, when you set up a static LAN IP address, you would need to set the "Subnet mask" to 255.255.255.0 and the "Default Gateway" to 192.168.1.1 and "DNS server" to 192.168.1.1
It is also important that no two devices on your network be set to the same static LAN IP address.

  • DHCP via Mac Address

I have a Cisco 831 router. I am handing out DHCP to my network via the router
    ip dhcp pool HmPrivate
    network 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0
    default-router 192.168.1.1
    dns-server 192.168.1.20
    domain-name hmprivate.net
What I am trying to do is assign the same ip address to my laptop via DHCP by associating the mac address of the laptop to the DHCP ip address. This is easily done on a windows server.
I have not been able to figure it out on this router though. I have looked at the commands under the pool as well as in config mode. Nothing is jumping out at me.
    Any assistance is greatly appreaciated!

Ok I powered up my laptop got an ip address from the rtr of 192.168.1.21. On the router i did a sh arp to get my hardware address of 0015.0025.60aa. I then created the new DHCP pool for the static entry. From my windows laptop i do an ipconfig / release then a ipconfig / renew. I keep getting the 192.168.1.21 address and not the 192.168.1.13 address that I want.
Am I missing something really simple here? Why wont the laptop grab the 192.168.1.13 address?

  • Obtaining client's MAC address

Is it possible to obtain the MAC address of a client connecting to my server socket?

    hi,
well i figured out how to get the MAC address in Win 9x and Win NT 4.0, well i could not figure out the c/c++ api for doing a JNI call, but the next best thing is to run the native utilities and then get them to write to a output file,.. so for eg, you create a batch file like this
    runwin9x.bat
    @echo off
    winipcfg /all /batch mac.txt
you then then use the Runtime.exec to get to run this batch file, it will create a file by name mac.txt , you then parse this file for the line containing the literal stirng "Physical address", A typical line looks like this..
    Physical Address.........: 00....
if the number starts with a 44 instead, then it is the PPP Dial up adapter address, so just parse for the Line which contains the String physical address but does not contain the number starting with 44-...
For winNt you can use the winmsd.exe to get it to write to a file..
    for eg
    runwint.bat
    @echo off
    winmsd /s/f
now the gotcha is that this creates a file with the machine name.. in the format machinename.txt..., you then parse this file for a line containing the String
    "Transport.."..
well what you could do, is first figure out the OS by doing a System.getProperty("os.name") , then call the respective batch file [using Runtime.exec], parse the batch file outputs depending on the OS and then get the MAC address... and after getting the address, just delete the output file resulting from running the batch file...
I dont know the c/c++ call for this.. i someone could point out which library to use, it would be useful..
    cheerz

  • How do I set timed access for specific mac addresses?

My daughter tends to stay up late on social media long after we've asked her to go to bed, so I'd like to use the AirPort Utility to just shut off her internet access during set hours. It looks fairly straightforward to set up, however, I don't know how to find her MAC address for her iPod. Can anyone enlighten me?

iPods, IPhones, and iPads do not have a MAC Address.
On the iPod home screen, tap Settings
    Scroll down and tap General
    Tap About
Scroll down to locate the Wi-Fi Address
Use the WiFi Address of an iPod, iPhone, or iPad in place of the MAC Address when you are setting up rules in Timed Access.

    Hello
Recently I bought a new Wifi Router and when I use the Maps App it tells that my ipad is located in China (Shangai)
When I also want to use the automatic timezone feature in the preferences app it indicates that my ipad is in China (Shangai)
I have already searched for a number of discussions (in and out the Apple Support) and their I found that the problem is in a location DB managed by Apple (crowd-sourced database). It seems that my Wifi Router is registered with a wrong location. :-(
    my questions :
.- is the somebody that can give me a procedure (certified by Apple) how I can update this location DB?
.- How can I store my Wifi Router MAC address with the correct location in this DB?

Your Computer Name is found in the Sharing preferences at the top. For your MAC address open Network preferences, select your desired port such as Wireless then click on the Advanced button. Click on the Hardware tab. You will find it there.
