How to make a backup Snow Leopard StartUp DVD?

I thought I was all set on Hard Drive Repair since I could boot from an external La Cie Hard Drive (FW800). But that didn't work - Disk Utility couldn't "UNMOUNT" my internal 500 gb HD in my MBP-13" (April 2010 model) when I started-up on an external HD.
So I used the original StartUp DVD and all worked fine. NOW I WANT a copy of that StartUp DVD to carry with me - don't want to risk taking the original DVD. OK so I burn a disk image - 7.34 gb in size - and try to burn a DVD - well of course, not enough space… I used a 4.7 gb DVD…
What to do? Can my MBP-13" burn a single-sided DVD with 7.34 gb capacity? If so, where do I find such a DVD? If not- what to do? How to duplicate this disk for emergency startups and HD repairs?
Thanks very much.

Thanks for the fast reply! OK but how do I do that? I need to make a bootable "SD" card, right? If I just copy the Mac OS X Install DVD.dmg to the card, it won't be bootable, will it? And if I open it, and copy all the contents, it is only 950 mb or so - don't think that is the answer either…
Thanks for any further comments on how to take this disk image that I created and get it to an 8 gb SD card (which I have) so that it becomes the bootable drive and so that I can repair my HD if needed when traveling etc.
Best,
Steve

Hello, it's great you have a backup, but 10.6 should just Install 10.6 system files over the top of 10.5 system files, & leave all your data intact on the drive.

how do I upgrade my snow leopard to the latest version free of charge
    thank  you

10.6.8 update is the latest version of Snow Leopard. To check if you are running that, go to the Apple Menu>About this Mac and it should tell you.
If you want to upgrade to the latest version of OS X (Mavericks, 10.9.1 - free) you can select the App Store from the Apple menu and download it.
However, ensure your Mac meets the tech specs: https://www.apple.com/osx/specs/ and be aware that although the specs say 2gb or RAM is required, real-world use seems to indicate that 4gb is a realistic minimum.
Also many older apps will not longer work in Mavericks and PowerPC apps will not run because Rosetta, which enabled the ability, is no longer supported/available.
Check out this compatibility list to prepare your self for possibly having to upgrade or replace apps that you may a rely on in your work flow.
    http://roaringapps.com/apps
The Mavericks installer is a 5.3gb download - you may want to make a copy of it before running it - could save another large download in the future if you ever needed to re-install.
Ensure you have reliable backup you can restore from before embarking on the upgrade.

Your machine is likely too dated to run 10.8 at all , or if it does will run slow.
It won't run your PPC based software or hardware drives for external hardware.
10.6 will run your PPC software and likely is best for that machine performance speaking, Software Update to 10.6.8 and stay there.
You better do your research first.

How can I re-install Snow leopard having installed Lion? The disk supplied states that I cannot use the version of 'Install Mac OS X'...HELP!

None of the instructions usually given for downgrading seems to mention the fact that you will lose some data in built-in applications, including at least Mail. When you installed Lion, your Mail database was converted from the format used by Snow Leopard's Mail to that used by Lion's Mail. There is no way to reverse that conversion. Therefore, you will lose your entire Mail database. If your messages are all stored on a remote server, that may not be an insurmountable problem, but otherwise you'll have to restore from the last backup you made before the upgrade, and then you'll still lose all changes to the database made since that time.
Another fact not often mentioned is that downgrading is usually the worst possible solution to a problem with Lion. But that's the answer to a question you didn't ask.

    Forget the Pendrive stategy...
Before attempting any Major Upgrade... get yourself an External Hard Drive... and create a Bootable Clone Backup of your current Hard Drive...
By far the easiest way to make such a Backup, is to use something like
    SuperDuper  http://www.shirt-pocket.com/
    or CCC  http://www.bombich.com/
That way, should anything untoward happen during the Upgrade,
    you will NOT LOSE ANYTHING.
(Get an EHD that is at least equal to your current Drive...)
Also, Check here for compatibility of 3rd party Software you may be using...
    http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
You should also consider more RAM... Get the Maximum you can for your Mac...
It is important to get the Correct and Matching RAM

Sounds like you have an account, so two options I would say.
Try turning it off, then off and see what options you get, or sync your phone to iTunes and click on the summary and choose the iCloud option.

I have Mac OS X 10.5.8 (9L30). How do I update to Snow Leopard?

You will need to call the Apple store or buy it from another online retailer; it is more difficult to find since mountain lion was released. I've noticed the prices for it have also gone up so try the Apple store first.
