How to make a bootable usb image backup, how to make a bootable usb image backup

I would like to make a bootable backup on my usb external flash drive (32GB). Is it possible? I don't have an OS x 10.7 installation disk.
-Ray

A bootable backup of what? On a flash drive you could:
Clone an OS X installer DVD to use for installing OS X on other Macs.
Install a basic OS X system that might be used for emergency situations.
If your MBA system uses less than 32 GBs you could clone it to the flash drive.

  • I've bought Lion USB Thumb Drive, how to make a backup of it?

hi i've bought the Lion USB Thumb Drive because my internet connection is super super slow.
now, the Lion USB Thumb Drirve arrived is super small and fragile because it's a Mini-B type USB connector, with all the metal exposed.
So I try to make a backup copy of it onto another USB drive.
wondering anyone know how to do it?
all the internet resourse I can find only teach how to make a USB from the downloaded version, but I don't have the downloaded version, so the method taught doesn't work because there is no "InstallESD.dmg" inside it.
any solution will be greatly appreciated.
    many thanks in advance.

After you install Lion, use: Lion Recovery Disk Assistant
It's not the Install Disk, but it has the ability to Install Lion OS X
    You can also try:
Open up Disk Utility and Click on the "Restore" tab, choose the Apple Lion Install USB as the source and your flash drive as the destination. Hit the Apply button and it may create a bootable USB drive. (the flash drive must be formatted as GUID)

It sounds like you destroyed your boot partition and the recovery partition.  Depending on it's age, your MacBook Air might be able to do a net boot.  Plug and ethernet connection into it and attempt to boot.  If it has the right firmware, it will find a net boot configuration on the net and boot that.  Then it will give you a Recovery Partition like display and allow you to reinstall the OS X version that came with it.... assuming that it was Lion or ML.  If your computer came with Snow Leopard, then even the net boot won't work.
At that point you need a bootable USB Key, or an external DVD drive AND a Snow Leopard installation DVD.
An Apple Store, if there is one nearby, MAY be able to get you going again.  However, whatever is on the SSD now will be toast too.

  • How to backup docs and pics using a USB drive?

I'm a fairly new Mac user and I'm panicking a little right now. I bought a USB to backup my pictures, documents, etc. (I also backup using Time Machine and an external drive, but wanted some extra protection). I just inserted the USB drive for the first time, it showed up on my desktop as "Untitled" (so far, so good), then I dragged my Documents folder from the Dock to the USB icon and the Documents folder from the Dock is gone. (Yikes!) When I opened the USB icon, there was nothing in it. I looked in Finder and my Documents are still in this Mac (somewhere), but how do I get the folder of them back onto the Dock? And before I go any further, what is the (proper) procedure for backing up my docs and pics (from iPhoto) to this USB drive?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm not gonna touch a thing until I hear from someone with more Mac knowledge than this Mac newbie.
    Sunny

Select the drive in the Finder, choose Get Info from the File menu, and if it's format doesn't contain Mac OS Extended, use the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to erase it.
Click on the item in the Finder's sidebar with the house icon and drag the items inside you want to back up onto the external drive and drag the Documents folder to the Dock.

I don't think you need Preview.
Select the image and use File->export and you have full control over the size and compression.

    1. Go to Your iPod hard disk
    2. You must to see hidden files (if you don't see them go to in system explorer to Tools > Folder Options > View > and mark Show Hidden Files)
    3. Go to folder named iPod_Control

  • How do  I Install Windows 7 on Mac Book Pro via a Bootable USB Drive

    Hi Guys,
I have a Mac Book Pro 13 inch, Early 2011 Processor  2.3 GHz Intel Core i5 (I initially had OS 10.5.8 which I upgraded to OSX 10.9.4 a few months ago).
When purchased it, I installed Windows via Super Drive (that being the only time i ever used the super drive). My Windows got corrupted for some reason 2 months ago. Hence, I removed the windows via Bootcamp to perform a fresh install. I discovered my Super Drive was no longer working.
Thereon I have been trying to install Windows via a bootable USB Drive but am failing to do so. After going through several forums, I have reached the following stage.
    1. Created Bootable Windows USB Drive using Windows USB (http://www.wikihow.com/Create-a-Bootable-Windows-7-or-Vista-USB-Drive). Have used this USB drive to install windows on a DELL Computer
    2. Bootcamp wasnt creating a partition for windows since no Windows Installation disc was being detected in super drive. (Solved it by downloading Toast Titanium and loading the .iso file on a virtual drive).
    3. Boot menu was initially not detecting external drive, so installed rEFIt - An EFI Boot Menu and Toolkit. Now it is detecting the USB Drive.
Now when I boot from this device, it get a black screen with the message "No bootable device - Insert Boot Disk"
Request someone to please help me install windows as some softwares which I work with are windows based.

    Yes.

All BCA versions drive the logic based on the Mac Model Identifier. Unfortunately there is no real workaround. .

  • I need to create a ghost image of my G4 iBook (OSX 10.3.9) and replace the OS9 on my G4 tower with the created iBook ghost image. How do you do this?

I need to create a ghost image of my G4 iBook (OSX 10.3.9) and replace OS9 on a G4 tower with the Ghost image. How do you do this? Will my applications still work?
The iBook is running Pather, i have tons of programs i use on it, project files, etc... and my G4 Mac tower is more powerful, faster, and more reliable than the iBook. I basiclly just want to take the entire OS, programs and files... create an image, and drop the image on the G4 Tower so it basically will function just like the iBook. Like a mirror image of everything that is on the iBook.  I know that you can create image files in the Disk Utility on Panther, but will that back up the entire OS with settings, programs, files and all?  ive never done anything like this before, so i wanted to post this up to see if i would get an answer. In the meantime, im reading "Mac OS X, Help Desk Essentials By Owen Linzmayer" to see if i can find the steps to do this.
Any help would be greatly apprciated. Much thanks!

Can't be done as an exact copy from one Mac to the other.  The operating systems are system specific. First make sure your system doesn't need a firmware update to get 10.2 or later on it. You'll need to install 9 on it if it does, direct from a 9 retail CD that is compatible with it *.  This disc can't say Upgrade, Dropin, or OEM. To determine compatibility, identify your G4 tower:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3082
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42739
Then look at the OS 9 compatibility:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25517
    Then apply the correct update
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
The last Mac OS 9 to come retail is 9.2.1, and that's newer than 9.0.4, 9.0.2, and 9.1.
Your ghost image can be done using cloning software, but then you'll have to use a retail 10.3 installer and 10.3.9 combo update on the G4 tower.  Then use the Migration Assistant to import the data from the clone of the iBook. The 10.3 retail disc looks like * and does not say upgrade, dropin, or OEM.  The 10.3.9 combo update is here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxcombinedupdate1039.html
The clone to an external hard drive can be done with these instructions*:
http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html The import of the external hard drive with the migration assistant can be done with these instructions:

  • How do I Setup USB HDD on Airport EXTREME TIME CAPSULE? USB HDD Not showing up

How can I get the HDD to work with my airport extreme?  Does it need formatted a specific way for mac?  Are there certain hdd types that work best with the I have a WD usb hard drive which doesn't show up when connected to airport extreme.  I'm trying to setup time capsule, but Having no luck.  I'm new to the Imac.

    A couple of pointers.
The hard drive must be specifically formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) to work with the AirPort Extreme's USB port. Check the documentation that came with the drive to find out how it is formatted at the present time.....it is likely formatted to work with Windows, which is not compatible with the AirPort Extreme.
Unfortunately, even if the drive is formatted correctly, Apple does not officially support Time Machine backups to a drive at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme, so that will be the next hurdle to deal with.
Some users actually do seem to be able to make this work, but overall, it is not a reliable method to backup your data if it is important to you.

  • TS1253 I am connected to internet through  modem. How can I use Time Capsule as a wreless harddrive and connection to USB printer

Can I use a Time Capsule as a part of my network> I am connected to internet through modem and want to use Time capsule as  a wireless harddrive and wireless connection to usb printer. How can I do that? Please help

This type of setup is not officially supported by Apple.
It might be possible to configure the Time Capsule this way, but please take a minute to consider a few things that you may not have thought about, as this is...frankly....the worst possible way that you could configure the Time Capsule.
Wireless backups will take twice as long as normal wireless.  Why? The signal must make a "double hop".
Hop "one" would be from your Mac to the wireless router, then the signal must make hop "two" to get back to the Time Capsule.
In addition to doubling the time for backups to occur, this doubles the chances for an error to occur during a backup.
The Ethernet ports are not enabled at all on the Time Capsule when it is configured this way, so backup over much faster Ethernet is not possible.
The USB port is enabled, so assuming that the printer is compatible, it could be configured to connect that way. Keep in mind that only printing is supported. If you have an All-in-One device, advanced functions like scan, copy, maintenenance will not be supported.
So, do you really want to try this?  There are no guarantees here that things will work at all.

  • Time Capsule out of space for backups - how best to proceed?

I have a 500GB 802.11n (2nd Generation) Time Capsule which I use for Time Machine backups from my late-2008 Aluminium Unibody 250GB MacBook.  My problem arose because I have used 229.33 GB of my hard disk on my MacBook, so I have less than 20 GB of free space on my MacBook.  My iPhoto Library is 103 GB and yesterday I dragged it to an External Hard Drive (1TB).  However, I have not deleted the iPhoto Library from my hard drive yet because I wanted to 'test' whether Time Machine would back up the new location of my iPhoto library to my Time Capsule .... the problem I have now is that Time Machine will not backup at all
I have tried several times to perform a Time Machine backup today, without success.  I receive a message that 'Backup requires 246.75 GB but only 170.97 GB are available.
I've checked the TM backups on the Time Capsule and the earliest, latest and ONLY backup is one performed yesterday at 10.18am prior to my moving the iPhoto Library to the EHD.  The EHD is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and is partitioned into four equal partitions of 250 GB (the fourth partition is slightly less.  The 1st partition has a SuperDuper Bootable Clone of my hard drive (including the iPhoto Library on the Hard Disk).  The 2nd partition is the new location for the iPhoto Library.  The 3rd and 4th partitions are empty.
Can someone suggest whether I would be safe to somehow (how?) delete the existing TM backup on Time Capsule and simply start with a 'brand new' TM backup tonight?  I'm thinking that if I have all 500GB available then TM SHOULD be able to perform a full backup and then I'll be OK with incremental backups for a while.
Also, is it possible/feasible (I know it wouldn't be the safest thing to do) to backup the iPhoto Library on the 2nd partition of my EHD to one of the blank partitions?
i would be grateful for any suggestions as to the best way to proceed
    Cheers
    Tricia

    Cvdk,
This is why it may not be a good idea to store other files on the same disk/partition as the Time Machine backups. consider the following:
Here is Apples’ line on this: “Time Machine works best if you use your backup disk only for Time Machine backups. If you keep files on your backup disk, Time Machine won’t back up those files, and the space available for Time Machine backups will be reduced.” [http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/11430.html]
This hasn't stopped some from successfully partitioning Time Machine hard disks and storing data on the other partition. As long as the Time Machine backup has its' own partition, you avoid any potential opportunities for conflict.
However, this is not an option for Time Capsule users as there is no easy way of partitioning the Time Capsules’ internal hard disk without elaborate effort. Granted, the Time Capsule is advertised as being able to perform both as a Time Machine backup destination and as a shared network drive [Apple Store (U.S.) - Time Capsule - 500 GB]
Nevertheless, some have experienced problems with maintaining files/folders occupying the same disk as Time Machine backups. In this case, they use the Time Capsule hard disk solely for Time Machine backups. Then attach an external hard disk to the Time Capsules USB port and store additional files there. This added disk will still be available to all Macs that can access the Time Capsule. (Note though, that any USB disks attached to the USB port of the Time Capsule can not then be backed up to the Time Capsule via Time Machine. Time Machine will only backup your Macs internal hard disk or any external hard disks physically attached to the Mac. Time Machine can not backup one remote device to another remote device.)
    Hope this clarifies things.
    Cheers!

  • On re-installing, I lost my disk image. How do I find it?

After re-installing Lion, my desktop disk image vanished. How can I find it?

The applicaton package Install Mac OS X Lion will be deleted at the conclusion of the installation process if it is located in the Applications folder. There is no reasonable way to recover it once deleted.
    Your best bets are:
1- Get a copy from someone who made a backup.
2- Redownload it from the Mac App Store.
Note that you don't really need it, since your hard drive now has a special recovery partition. Reboot the computer while holding the option key and you will be able to choose a boot partition called Recovery HD. Boot into that, and you can reinstall Lion from there.
If you want to redownload the installer, here's how:

System Preferences quits suddenly. I have lost the dock, including the trash and ability to change desktop image. How can I replace this part of System Preferences? Where can I find Trash? All other aspects of System Preferences work.

just that that is one method, and lacks provision for working boot image and for an emergency - Lion gives a small minimal emergency boot environment but may lack all the utilities you need to use and run, even some drivers that your mac requires for add on PCIe.
Just grab and look through Help in Carbon Copy and SuperDuper, both excellent and each has their use - together - for cloning.
And do you have two TM backup sets? ought to consider that also, rotate daily or make a weekly set. Otherwise you are putting all your eggs in the proverbial one basket.
