How to make a external HD (FireWire or USB) spin down when no in use?

I have a MM and want to make sure that the external HD spins down if not being used.
Would this automatically happen if I tick the box 'Put HD to sleep when not in use' in the control panel? Or is there an other solution to make sure it does so? I have not bought a disk as of now, but would be looking at a 2.5 (Samsung HM500LI 500 GB (SpinPoint M6)) in a FireWire housing.
Thanks

I really have no idea because I never sleep disks. However, that's controlled by the setting in the /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist file. The default is ten minutes if you sleep disks. Experiment with various settings by issuing this command in the Terminal.app, until you get it the way you want it:
*sudo pmset -a disksleep XX*
where XX is the new time in minutes.

Try to go to Settings and then Store. Tap to your Apple ID and select View Apple ID. Now choose to check your payment information and when you're done tap Done. I had to rewrite my three digit code of the credit card and now it works.
Oh, I also activated Genius for Apps but I don't think it makes any difference.

  • Firewire drives won't spin down when I put iMac to sleep

I have three external hard drives connected to my iMac in a FW800 daisy chain. It used to be, when I put my iMac to sleep, all three of the external drives would spin down and go quiet. I replaced the drive in the middle of the chain with a new one (both LaCie), and now none of the three external drives spin down when my I sleep my iMac.
Does anyone know how to get them to spin down?

It's a known issue for many many brands of FW800 drives.  I've been reporting this to apple for a while.  With 10.9.2, my particular drives will spin down if they are mounted and unmounted but if my system wakes from sleep which will spin up all drives, they stay that way until I mount and unmount again.  So....10.9.2 is a little better but FW is still borked.
This is the primary reason my Mac Pro is still on Mountain LIon.  My MBA is on mavericks.  A note of caution...Mavericks writes to the NVRAM, sometimes when dual booting it is good to clear that memory.

  • 10.4.9 update,  external FW drives no longer power down when ejected?!?!?!

this is really odd. and i have reverted to 10.4.8 until i can find a solution.
i have two different fw400/usb20 external cases. inside each is a 200gb ata hd.
now before 10.4.9, when i ejected the disks from the desktop, they would not only eject, but POWER DOWN as well.
now, when i eject, they dont power down. This was really one of the great things about fw400 drives, and i loved it.
    whats the deal here?
the drive enclosures are a Macally 100ac, and a Macally 500bc.

You're not alone. I have three Macally PHR-100AC drives, with a 200 and 300 GB Maxtor drive, and a 320 GB Western Digital drive. All are exhibiting the same behaviour:
The drives don't spin down like the Energy Saver "Spin down hard drives when possible" checkbox is checked (or, for the Terminal-minded, my "pmset -g disk" tells me disksleep is set to 5.) The drives also do not spin down when I eject the drives, as you said. I've tested it over USB 2.0 and Firewire: it exhibits the same behaviour on both.
There are threads at AppleNova (http://forums.applenova.com/showthread.php?t=22914) and MacOSXHints (http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=69428&page=2) with people with the same problem.
I've tested the drives on another system, and they still spin down properly, so the 10.4.9 update didn't permanently damage the drive chipsets.
I emailed Macally, and they said, "Well, that *****, tell Apple."
I have a 2.5" Firewire external drive from EZQuest that still spins down properly upon idle or upon ejection, so it's not like 10.4.9 completely killed that ability.
I'm posting a bug now to Apple's Bug Report form. We'll see where it goes from there.

  • External firewire drive constant spin-down/up

I often connect an external Lacie firewire drive to my MacBook Pro for regular time machine backups. When the drive is connected and I'm using my Mac, the drive is constantly spinning and in an 'awake' state.
The drive remains in this state for as long as the display is on. As soon as the display enters sleep mode the external drive spins down, remains in sleep mode for 30 seconds, then spins-up for 20 seconds, only to enter sleep mode again. This cycle continues endlessly causing excessive noise and needless wear and tear.
I've unchecked put hard disk to sleep when possible in the energy saver preferences although this hasn't helped.
    Any ideas?

Try un-checking the drive sleep box.
What model is the drive? Is it bus-powered or does it have its own AC power supply brick? What does LaCie have to say?

  • Why does mac mini power shut down when trying to use external harddrive as boot drive?

I connected a OWC Mercy Elite Pro external hard drive that has it's own power source to my mac mini. It's connected by firewire and I'm trying to use it as an external boot drive. The problem is when I have the power turned on the OWC before I turn the power on the mac mini, the mac powers up but then shuts down after about 30 seconds. However, if I wait to turn on the OWC power after the mac boots up there is no issue. Of course this defeats the purpose of using the OWC as a boot drive because it needs to be on before the mac boots up. I don't have any issues using another external hard drive as a boot drive that doesn't have a power source.

Hmmm, very strange, could there be a ground loop where the OWC drive is plugged in?
If you hold alt or option key at bootup, without the OWC drive, once the boot manager shows up connect the OWC drive, wait, does the OWC drive show up eventually as a boot choice, or what happens?

  • In Yosemite: External Hard Drives Won't Spin Down

Since installing Yosemite, my external (and perhaps internal) drives won't spin down in energy saver mode: 'Put hard drives to sleep when possible.' I'm using Seagate Barracuda 2TB internal drives in external Voyager Q drive bays. They seem to be getting a little too warm, I can also feel them spinning.
    Thanks!
    Steve

Thanks for those diagnostics & remedies. Those are good to know. Performed all of them but the problem persisted. I tried swapping out different drives and discovered that it was one particular Seagate drive that wasn't spinning down. So that was the culprit. Going to check out the Seagate discussions here or on Seagate and see what can be done, probably nothing.
    Thanks much!

  • How to Make an External DVD Burner the Default

When I click "Burn" I'd like it to use my external burner instead of the built-in one. Is there a way to change the default burner? I was unable to figure out how.
The reason is because the PowerMac is located remotely from my station in a machine room, but the external burner is right next to me.

If you leave a CD, DVD, or some disc with data, in the internal drive, it should then use the external drive for burning. If you use good blank discs, such as Verbatim, there should be no reason to reduce the burning speed.
