  • How I make a boot disk

    Hello.
I'm an absolut Linux beginner and I tried to install archlinux on an external HDD, because my internal windows drives are dynamic logical Volumes and this doesn't work with Linux.
After the installation from the CD I noticed that I cannopt boot from USB HDD because of the BIOS.
How I make a boot disk (floppy) now ? The wiki guide doesn't help because if I boot from the installation CD I don't have the command fdformat and the command pacman - S grub works neither.
    Can you help?
    Best Regards

Excuse by bad language please, I'm not english!

    Ok,
I found a grub boot disk on the net, it was a super grub boot disk. I deleted nearly all files and just copied my files from /boot/grub in the grub directory of the floppy disk. I used the windows tool "explore2fs" to get acces to my boot partition with the grub directory.
    Her is my menu.lst:
    # (0) Arch Linux
    title  Arch Linux
    root   (hd2,0)
    kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sdc1 ro vga=773
    initrd /kernel26.img
    # (1) Arch Linux
    title  Arch Linux Fallback
    root   (hd2,0)
    kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sdc1 ro vga=773
    initrd /kernel26-fallback.img
    # (1) Windows
    title Windows XP
    rootnoverify (hd0,0)
    makeactive
    chainloader +1
It doesn't work, because the hd 2,0 is not found from grub. (Selected disk does not exist)
It seams that grub is not recognizing my usb hdd at start up ?!?! but this cannot be, because during the installation process it is.
    Many Thanks

PS The possibility to boot Arch with the Windows Bootmanager is interesting. Maybe we can discuss this later.....

  • How to make the hard disk visible in a new admin account?

I created a new admin account, in order (hopefully) to solve some problems that I've been having with SPSS21 for Mac.  But when I log on as a new admin account, my hard disk no longer appears on the desktop.  It (and all the folders and files in it) are still accessible by clicking on the hard disk in the path bar in a folder, but it's annoying not to have the icon on the hard disk.  I don't know why the icon for the hard disk does not appear on the desktop.  Does anyone know why, and how to make it appear?  Thanks.

Oh, my god!  I'm so embarrassed that I couldn't figure this out myself, after being a devoted Mac user for three decades!  It's so obvious!  Thank you so much!

  • How to make a boot disk for new iMac?

I just purchased a new iMac equipped with a bare bones 1TB SATA hard drive.  I want to replace that disk with a 1TB SSD from Crucial (less than 1/2 of the cost of purchasing the iMac with the SSD).  I have a Time machine backup of the iMac on a Time Machine/Airport device; how do I make a boot disk that can get the OS up and running, and able to restore the backup from the Time Machine?
    Thanks,

I had not given the warranty issue any prior thought; thanks for pointing that out.  Is there a way around the warranty issue; such as a "factory authorized" way to install it, that is feasible?
    Thanks for the quick response...

You can take it an AASP to have the install done however you probably would be better off returning the machine (assuming it was bought directly from Apple and is less than 14 days old) and buy the configuration you want. Even if an AASP does install the SSD there is no guarantee Apple will honor the warranty, it's 100% at their discretion.

  • How to make a DVD disk image to be burned from a PC?

I need to make a DVD with DVD-SP, save a disc image, upload it have someone on a PC download it and burn it.
Is this possible? Anybody been succesful at this?
    thanks

If they have a burning program that recognizes VIDEO_TS files, no problem.
You need to remove two files from VIDEO_TS first called .LAY and .LAYOUT. They are only required by DVD SP and not the final disc.
To be safe make a top level folder called NAME_OF_FILM (max 32 characters) and put VIDEO_TS in there together with an empty folder named AUDIO_TS.
Actually, DVD SP should generate this for you it will be where ever the Build folder is set to be saved in Preferences.
Don't make a Mac disk image. PCs can't read them. A .zip file or ISO (Toast makes them) is probably better.

  • How to make OSX boot disk using a USB thumb drive? The final answer?

Well guys I am getting really conflicting information about possibility to use USB thumb drive for boot up drive for OSX! Some people say yes, some say no, some - not sure.
Here is the question formulated as straight as possible:
A Mac user wants to create OSX 10.6 boot-up disk on a USB thumb drive, so it can be used to start the Mac instead of using manufacturer’s CD. Also, (thumb drive’s size permitting) the Mac user must be able to install software on it, as it is done on the internal HD.
The computer is MacBookPro , Intel based , OSX 10.6
The USB thumb drive is 16 Gb brand new .
    So,
what the EXACT steps will be, to properly Mac format the thumb drive with OSX disk utility and then install on it the OSX 10.6 from the manufacturer's grey CD that comes with the Mac?
Could someone, who has practical experience and is absolutely sure about the exact steps provide the final answer, please?
Thanks in advance to old hands & pro Mac Users willing to clarify this topic !

    Hi
The instructions to make a bootable USB are [here|http://macs.about.com/od/diyguidesprojects/ss/usbflash.htm]
I have made a bootable USB following the above instruction and also had enough space to install a few utilities. It works fine for me.
I usually like to check disk health of my MBpro intel via disk utilities off the USB after booting from it. Not that this is a recommended way or anything, just that I like to do it that way.

  • How to make sure a disk is bad?

I have a Western Digital 320 GB FireWire disk that has been acting up. The symptoms include
    • IO errors reported when using ChronoSync to back up
    • When I tried DiskWarrior, while rebuilding the directory it said something like "Performance will be slow because of hard disk errors"
Is there a definitive test that I can do to check if there's a problem? I am thinking of reformatting the disk using Write Zeros. If this works am I OK? It's still under warranty, so I could just send it back...

    Hi, Stuart.
    1. The definitive test is the SMART diagnostics. See Step 1 of the Procedure in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. If the SMART diagnostics do not indicate Verified, then the disk is defective.
    2. If the drive has developed bad sectors, it should be replaced, though zeroing the drive can map currently identified bad sectors out of service. However, bad sectors, once found, often recur. See the "Bad Sectors" section of my previously-cited FAQ.
Note that the terms "bad blocks" and "bad sectors" are used synonymously, but it is the sectors that go bad. Blocks are comprised of sectors.
    3. Directory corruption, i.e. problems identified by Disk Utility's Repair Disk function, do not necessarily indicate a bad drive as there can be a variety of causes for such unrelated to drive failure: see my "Data corruption and loss: causes and avoidance" FAQ. However, directory corruption can result in data loss and other problems.
    4. The problems you cited with ChronoSync and DiskWarrior have a higher probability of being caused by directory corruption, vs. hard drive failure. However, one cannot entirely rule out a potentially failing or defective hard drive.
    5. You're more likely to encounter problems with a given hard drive when it is either (a) very new or (b) very old. If a new drive is going to fail, it will likely fail is shortly after it's put into service. In the school of Failure Analysis, this is known as Infant Mortality. Most products conform to the Bathtub Curve during their lifetime: they either fail shortly after being put into service, fail randomly during their useful life, or fail increasingly after they enter the wear-out phase.
    Good luck!

  • How do I change the scratch disk?

How do I edit disk ? - I'm getting the "disk is full" warning.
How do I edit scratch disk ?

I like that you used a big, easy to read font, but you didn't use quite enough words...
Please list the OS and Photoshop version you're using.
Are any of your disks actually full?
If you can open Photoshop, you can configure the scratch disk preferences in Edit - Preferences - Performance (in recent versions of Photoshop that is).
If you can't even open Photoshop, you can set your scratch disk preferences by pressing and holding the Control and Alt keys (or their Mac equivalents) immediately upon cold-starting Photoshop.  You have to be very quick, and if you're quick enough it will prompt you as follows:

  • Scratch disk for cs3

Hello out there,i am a new person to CS3 and i would like to ask if there is anyone out here which can explain the process to make a scratch disk for Photoshop cs3.
I have a graphics company and bought cs3 it is working well but i am going to add another disk in my computer for this and need info to set this disk up. My e-mail [email protected] thanks Larry

It is best to have the scratch disk a different disk than the OS and program disk.  The size needed depends on how big of images you will be using, how many you will have open at one time, how many layers or smart objects you could add, and a few other things.  Some do OK with 20 gigs, others have 300+ gigs.

  • What size for OS/apps SSD and scratch disk SSD ?

    Hi !
I need a SSD for my OS with the full CS6 Cloud and few others apps (but no games, pictures, songs or other personnal stuff),
    that's mean between 70 and 80Gb. So I think I'll need only a 128Gb for that.
I also need a scratch disk, so despite I prefer a fast and large disk like the Barracuda 3Tb, I read it will be better to take a SSD.
My workstation is a 6x core, with 64Gb RAM, and 6x HDD for projects, render and footage (4K R3D and 1080p PRORES).
    My questions are :
    1) OS/apps SSD :
Even if I only need 80Gb (or a few more like 90Gb max) of storage, do I need to take more than 128Gb ?
Is it possible that the OS fill my disk with lots of temporary files ?
And the same for Photoshop, Premiere, After Effects or others apps ?
I know those apps will use the scratch disk, but maybe others temporary files will be write on this OS/apps drive ?
    2) scratch disk SSD :
Like I said, I prefer larger drives, but as I understood, SSD will be better for preview and temp files,
and actually I'm working with 4K R3D footages and 1080p PRORES.
So do you think 128Gb will be enough for a scratch disk, to use with CS6, Blackmagic Resolve, and others 3D apps, like Maya ?
Of course I can empty them regularly.............. but is it enough ? Or 256Gb, or higher will be better ?
Or just a fast WD Velociraptor 1Tb or even a cheaper Barracuda 3Tb hard drive will be good enough ?
    Thanks guys.

    Thanks for your fast reply.
But, I'm confused.... if the OS and the apps can fill my disk with lots of temp files, how a 128Gb can be enough ??
Maybe you mean that those apps will fill the SSD with "hidden" files, but not reach the limit of 128Gb ?
About Windows, I didn't knew I could make a scratch disk only for this temp files.
Do I have to put the Windows temp files in the scratch disk also ?
And you don't think a Velociraptor with 1Tb will be a good solution between the speed of a SSD and the size of a HDD ?
My drives (alone or in RAID 0) are directly connected from the motherboard P9X79 PRO, trought the X79 chipset, and the Marvell chipset.
But I read that the Marvell chipset has only 500Mb/s in total bandwitch divided between the 2 drives..... I'm not really sure....
but even if it's true, I don't think the OS/apps will take a lot of bandwitch (except when I'll start an apps),
and it will surelly let the full bandwitch for the scratch disk. Don't you think ?
4 drives are connected to the X79 chipset :
    - 1x SATA 6Gb/s - Barracuda 3Tb (projects)
    - 1x SATA 6Gb/s - Barracuda 3Tb (renders)
    - 2x SATA 3Gb/s / RAID 0 - Barracuda 3Tb (footages)
    - 2x SATA 3Gb/s / RAID 0 - Barracuda 3Tb (footages)
2 drives will be connected to the Marvell chipset :
    - 1x SATA 6Gb/s - SSD (OS/apps)
    - 1x SATA 6Gb/s - SSD or HDD (scratch disk for CS6 and other "video" apps)

  • CS - Scratch Disk Error, Hanging Crash

Photoshop has started flipping out on me for no good reason. Anything can trigger this 'hanging crash'; it appears to be completely random and regardless of file size, color space, tools in use, or anything else.
I get an error window, then the program locks up, spends at LEAST ten minutes failing to shut down (costing me a lot of idle time), and then finally closes. Force quitting will not speed up its 'crash' or stop it from beachballing. In addition, while it is taking its own sweet time to believe that it's been force-quit, it bogs down the rest of my machine so I can't hardly do anything else. Activity Monitor, however, will not show it as an active/running program.
I've run Disk First Aid and scraped off the preference barnacles, but it doesn't help. There USED to be a way to make the scratch disk bigger (I thought maybe it might somehow be running out of space) but that doesn't seem to be an option anymore.
    This is the error window.

Okay, so... I just installed CS4 a little while ago.
I am STILL getting the same issues. Either it will just go into Spinnyball Neverland until I force quit it (which takes a good 10-15 minutes to even clear), or I get the exact same error message above.
No other CS4 products cause this error.... JUST Photoshop. What the fel is its damage? Can't anyone tell me?

  • Changing the scratch disk to hard drive

Hello, I've read the forums on here on how to change the scratch disk. I have a Mac Book Pro and I've downloaded the trial version of Adobe Photoshop CC. I brought a Seagate Hard drive 4TB and it's installed and ready to go on my computer, but for some reason I still can't change it. Whenever I go to the Scratch Disk Preferences, the only option I have to change the scratch disk to, is to the Macintosh HD... What am I doing wrong? I don't have enough memory with the regular Mac.
Also, I tried the Command + Alt(option) right on cold starting the program, which brings up scratch disk preferences and, still, I do not get the option of changing it to the Back Up drive from Seagate. Help please.

how did you install the HD
how is it formatted (try using Apple's Disk Utility> Erase> Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
