How to make a test section of a large printout?

Is there a way to print a test section of a large print? Let’s say I want to make a final print that will be 24” x 36”. Before using up a big sheet of paper and all the ink, I want to print a section of it onto smaller paper, like letter size.
I realize I can sort of do this in Aperture by making a version, cropping it and printing that onto letter size paper. The problem with that is that I can’t make this match the scale and resolution of the final print. Maybe it’s close, but not exactly. I can turn off “best dpi” and set the dpi manually, so that makes it match in resolution; but how do I keep Aperture from scaling this cropped section?
The kind of test section I'm trying to print should be the same scale and resolution as the final print; it should look like I had printed the final print and cut out a section of it - the test section should be exactly the same size and resolution as the cutout section from the final print. This helps me make final adjustments like sharpening and exposure.

Yes to both. I set up the final print size in Aperture, and only loaded letter size paper in my printer. I even got a nice white border, so no over printing. It's a good way to check sharpness, colour, contrast, etc., before committing to the large sheet (I use the same type of paper, of course). My printer is an Epson 3800, and it has sensors for paper sizes.

I use UPK 12 Client.
When I click "Link a new section" in an existing Module, I can see it in the outline in the left pane in my UPK 12 Developer. When I then check-in all items, click Publish > select c: drive (a test folder) > Publish entire outline, the outcome includes the new section created.
When I do the exact same procedure, but choose to click Publish > server (which is set up for my UPK) > Publish entire outline, the outcome does NOT include the new section created, but everything else yes.
How to make the new section visible in the server published version?

Hi Sille,
Are you publishing over knowledge center? or is it publishing to a network drive? Once you check in the section save the module once and try again. See if it makes any difference.

How to make presentation's sections names appear in header?

In header I would like to put sections names (say Aim, Experiment, Results, Conclusion) of my talk. The idea is when I am on "Experiment" section's slides, all these names appear, say horizontally and only "Experiment" is visible while the other headings should blur or fade?.
So the question is:
How to break the presentation in sections or subsections?
How to make Keynote manage relevant section headings i.e. fading out irrelevant headings, colours, fonts
Of course I can write the names manually and for each slide do the necessay changes to the header. but lets face it: for 25+ slides this toturous.
I know probably I would have to reedit some master slides or this there any coding to be done?
I know this kind of things is rather simple in Beamer.

this is a popular straightforward and quick thing to do, its all set up manually
It took me less than two minutes to create 40 slides as you describe:
duplicate the blank master slide 4 times
create 4 text boxes on one of the duped masters with your titles using gray text, paste these into the 3 other dup master slides
change the text colour to orange of one text box in each of the new masters, so you have a different highlight colour in each master
create as many new slides as you need then add one the 4 master layouts to a selection of the working slides
obviouly use colours and layout to suit your needs
when you need a new slide, just apply one of the master slide layouts

How to make Geological Cross Sections in Adobe Illustrator?

I have been tasked with producing a geological cross section in Adobe Illustrator. It is a lengthy process, as I am new to the software. I never learned it in my GIS studies. I know that there is plenty of GIS software out there to produce x sections automatically (we have Petrel for example), but they want it done in Adobe Illustrator as it's not a data driven x section.
Does anyone have any familiarity with doing such a thing? I am having to basically use the cutting tool to divide up a box into the sedimentary layers. Then I fill the cut shapes with the correct colour. Complications arise, however:
I have to show wavy lines between some sedimentary layers to indicate a gap, or layers which aren't shown. I am using the distortion tool to automatically produce the wavy line, which means I need to:
a. copy/paste the original area
b. change the appearance so there is no fill, delete all strokes except the one which will turn into the wavy line, apply distortion
c. copy/paste the original area
d. change the appearance so there is no fill, delete the stroke that will turn into the wavy line, change stroke to black line
This means I have 3 elements whenever there is a part of the cross section showing a wavy line:
the area which has a fill but no stroke,
the wavy line (derived from the area by deleting the fill and strokes which aren't wavy),
the rest of the stroke around the area.
Does anyone know of a faster way to do such a thing?
I wish I could just draw a shape using some sort of line tool and AI would detect when there is a closed off area so I could then select a colour fill.
Another problem is the cutting tool does not make it easy to produce matching curves:
In this image you can see that there is a wrinkle across many sedimentary layers, but my cutting skills in Illustrator mean that the lines do not follow a nice uniform shape. Of course this is the case in the real world as well, although at the moment the image has a bit too much of a 'hand drawn' look to it. Part of the problem is that the cutting tool, usually helpfully, smooths out the cut line as one goes (digitising a smooth curve with a mouse is impossible!). Sometimes this smoothing has undesired effects. It would be good to know if I can apply an offset to another line when cutting.
Is it right that I should be using the cutting tool as my primary way of setting up a x section, anyway?
I'm thinking a better way to do all of this would be to somehow have a tool that enables me to select vertices across multiple lines in sedimentary layers, then drag them up or down. This would then apply the same amount of curve across the layers.

There are several Libraries of pre-built Pattern Swatches you can load. Or you can create your own if none of the provided ones are what you want. The help files will show you the basics of creating a Pattern Swatch. Create one for each different pattern you want in the strata. Select the rectangle and the paths. Get the Live Paint Tool. Set the current Fill to one of the Patterns. Click between two of the strata lines. The selected objects will be converted to a so-called LivePaint Group, and you can proceed to apply other Pattern Swatches to the various areas.
The Shape Builder tool can then be used to trim away the outboard portions of the strata lines, back to where they intersect the rectangle.

I am creating a form and there is a secion for 'Add a Dependent'. The form only show enough fields for one dependent. I have created a button that says 'Add a Dependent'. When the user clicks on this button I would like the section to show up again, asking for the information for the new dependent. Also, there will be a cancel button so that if they click on 'add a dependent' too many times, they can cancel each one individually if needed.The purpose for this is because it will take up much less space in the form. Can anyone help?

Here is what I did for making the Subform repeat..
Selected the Dependants subform and went to the Binding tab, checked the cehckbox "Repeat Subform each Data Item"..
Placed the below code in the click event of the Add Dependant button.
     Dependants.instanceManager.addInstance(1);
Placed the below code in the Click event of the "X" button:
          if
(this.parent.index>0)
          Registration.content.Dependants.instanceManager.removeInstance(this.parent.index);
Placed the below code in the Initialize event of the "X" button:
     if(this.parent.index==0)
          this.presence = "hidden";

How to make white colored sections transparent

I have made a logo that consists of a black circle, with lots of text and shapes inside that are colored white. It looks fine on a white background, but when you change the background color the text stays white, when I want it to be transparent like a "cut out". How can I achieve this easily and still be able to edit the text?

Thanks Jacob! This worked. I already tried clipping masks and pathfinder but they didn't work very well because I used strokes around the white shapes. Not sure about knockout groups, but it did what I wanted.

How to make a editable section non editable?

When I created my sample site in DW4, I made my template with editable/non editable section. My footer I made editable, now I would like to add a few links on the footer (contact me, about me, etc). I did place an image,background color in the footer.
Should or can I convert the footer of my template to non editable so that I do the above and have the change made to all pages in the form of a libary item, or is there another way to do this efficently?

Just to avoid confusion, the version of DW you are using is NOT DW4, it's DWCS4. DW4 was released in 1998 and superseded by DMX (6.0).

Placing a Library item in that footer editable region would certainly give you the flexibility you are seeking, but there is a more efficient way to do this. That way would be to use a server-side include. The disadvantage of using a Library item is that after making any changes to it, you must upload every affected page to the server again (since, as with Templates, only local files are affected by these changes). On the other hand, the disadvantage of using server-side includes is that you must change your filenaming system site-wide. If your site is not too large (say <20 pages), and if you are not so experienced with server stuff, then Library items may be your best method.

How to make LR respect existing organization of large collections

Hi. I'm new to LR. I've used other graphics programs frequently (Photoshop Elements, Photoshop LE, Paint Shop Pro, The Gimp, etc.)
I was convinced to buy LR by reading about its combination of features, particularly its management, and the high praise it's received in reviews. I watched the organization and help videos (such as LR catalog and photos on same HD) before doing anything else.
But LR (v3.2) is doing things that I don't understand.
1. LR has read my 108,105 photos that are now in 1,706 folders and, after 12 hours, put them in one big catalog blob. It has not kept my folder organization.
2. It takes forever to see any given photo, as it seems to rebuild the preview images every time the catalog is accessed, just as Photoshop seems to (Paint Shop Pro keeps a small browser file that opens instantly). The HD goes nuts during any attempt to preview or access a photo using LR.
3. LR does not recognize many files, such as TIFFs and JPGs from my scanner and edited TIFFs and gray JPGs made by Paint Shop Pro. These files are recognized by Photoshop Elements, The Gimp, IrfanView, etc. LR recognizes my raw files just fine though (Canon CRW and CR2 and Sigma X3F).
Any guidance is appreciated. The help files seem to assume I already understand the LR vocabulary. I'm certainly not understanding the management; it simply can't be this slow and cumbersome. I also want it to respect my folder organization. (I can look at my folders in LR, but it once again builds previews every time.)

I'm working now directly in my original folders, and that seems to be much more satisfactory that trying to deal with LR's giant catalog of 100,000+ images.
But I'm still not following LR's process in creating the catalog. I can't seem to get it to make previews until I open that folder. It then presents, in order: a thumbnail; a thumbnail with three gray or three white dots; another thumbnail. I can't find an explanation of what this means anywhere, and it does it every time I open the folder -- sometimes fast, sometimes slow. The disk thrashes a lot.
When I open LR, it takes a while (thrash) to return to its previous state -- maybe a minute.
When I ask it to sync, it takes forever. With 600 new photos, sync took 34 minutes. As I mentioned above, my specs aren't puny with a 3GHz dual-core processor. And F5 maddenly does not follow the Windows UI for refresh (the only program I have that doesn't), so I simply can't get LR to show and sync just those new folders -- I have to sync the master folder, and it traipses through all the photos it didn't know how to read before.
And speaking of which, the oddest thing is what LR won't show. The FPX format is too old for LR to see, I'm guessing, so I'll scan those from the original negatives. But the mystery is that it won't load two batches of ordinary JPEGs from my Canon from 2005. I have a few hundred of these. Although every other program sees them, LR does not. They don't seem to be remarkable at all -- same format from the same camera on one day is 'unsupported' by LR on the next day. Every time I try to resync, it logs them as unsupported.
So my questions are: How do I get sync to show only new folders? How do I get LR to read those ordinary JPEGs that it thinks are unspported?
So far I'm managed to work with just one photo without shutting LR down from total impatience.

How to make use of XMLDB to process large XML and create spatial objects

For someone new to XMLDB I find it hard to make sense of the enormous amount of information (and easy to get lost in it). So I come here to ask for directions.
I have to build a procedure that fills a table of spatial objects based on XML input. Basically the XML contains a large amount of elements that describe the geometry type and contain the geometries coordinates. The XML can get quite large (200-300Mb).
Somehow I have to process each element and create an sdo_geometry object.
Now let me ask a very broad question: What would be a good way to handle this?

I used JMEter, but I don't use the graph listener...I use the table as well as the tree listener. The table will tell inform me the average and median time it take for the application to finish. It also report to me if the request made was sucessful or not. It also report how long it take for each individual thread to finish the request.
I also use log4j to log any necessary information while running the test
