How to make a time lapse video in iMovie using a point and shoot camera?

I recorded an approx. 45-minute long video on my Canon point and shoot digital camera, then imported it on to my computer. (The file format is .MOV)
Now I would like to turn this video into a time lapse, of about a minute or two long. I know that iMovie HD has a time lapse feature, but it seems to only be for camcorders?
How can I import this .MOV file and turn it into a time lapse?

Kirk, I think Nancy wants to just take a frame from her video every minute or so, so that the 45 minute video runs for, say, 45 seconds.
I don't think she wants to "speed it up" and make it run at breakneck speed, but wants to put together frames taken at a particular interval ..e.g; one frame per minute.
I'm sure you know how best to do that using QuickTime. Any suggestions?
(..Otherwise, Nancy, choose a point in your video - using iMovie - about one minute into the video and then use 'Create Still Frame' (or ShiftApple'S') and make the new still frame just a few moments long ..repeat through your 45 minute movie. Drag all those 45 stills together and you have a time-lapse movie. You could make each of them one-and-a-half seconds long, and apply a half-second Cross Dissolve between each of them. You'd then have a less "stuttery" and smoother time-lapse video..)

Click on the blue Internet Recovery in nbar's post. That is a link to what computers can run Internet Recovery.
Do a backup,  preferable 2 separate ones on 2 drives. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors.  Reformat the drive using Disk Utility/Erase Mac OS Extended (Journaled), then click the Option button and select GUID. Then re-install the OS.

  • Point-and-shoot camera video problems

Hi I'm trying to edit a video from a DSC that is encoded as 30.000 frames per second non-drop, 1280x720p, square pixels in motion JPEG codec.  The audio is 8KHz 64 kb/s mono in PCM codec.
In elements 8, I can't import it because of the audio format.  So I ran it through Free AVI Video Converter. It changed the video codec  to XVID and the audio to MPEG. to Now they import and an edit just fine.  But when I try to export them, I can't get a setting that looks good. The pixelization is horrible. Titles are completely unreadable.
I'm tempted to upgrade to elements 11, but I won't try that unless I know for sure it will solve my problems.
I'd really prefer to import the direct camera videos and export them at a usable quality.
    The camera was a friend's SeaLife DC1400

Thanks to both of you for the quick replies.
Hunt, this was a good suggestion. I switched to H.264 at a fixed 3MB/s and it worked much better.
The error when I import the unmodified clips is: Add Media Failure. <filename> Unsupported audio rate in file.
I used GSpot to check the original files and it shows the audio codec is PCM Audio, at 8KHz, 64 kb/s (1 chnl).
    My re-rendered clips are MEG-4 AAC LC, 48KHz, 160 kb/s, stereo (2/0)
So apparently the audio was too poor to import.  Ironically these are scuba diving clips, and I plan to throw-away the audio entirely.  Unfortunately I have to re-encode the video stream to achieve that goal. I was hoping to find a tool that can strip the audio out of the MP4 wrapper. But everything I found so far was to extract the audio and ditch the video.

  • Time Lapse video

I wanted to make a time lapse video and I recorded 19 hours of video but now find I import it into adobe premiere pro but cannot edit it. Is there a way around this as I want to compress the 19 hours down to 10 minutes?

Premiere Pro is too simple to make a mistake in. well you can if do not know what you are doing. But obviously I would think that I do. not so long ago I found out that the biggest file that you can edit on premiere pro on windows is 3.? gigs which relates to how much memory windows can address.
I was wondering if there was a simimlar issue here with my macbook pro or was it a design issue with premiere?
    1 I open premiere pro
    2. I create a new project
    3 bring in my footage
    4 create a new sequence
but still cannot drag and drop my footage onto the time line. this has happened on two occasions
I still after creating a new project, canceling on creating a sequence until I import my movie and then drag it to the new button to create sequence, I am unable to then drag it to the time line

  • Time-lapse video unfocused

Hello, i got a problem  When i make a time-lapse video , after adjusting my photo and synchronizing  all , i'm doing the slide show at 24fps, but the final video is unfocused, what i'm doing wrong ?

Lightroom 5.2+ only does 29.97 fps so it could be the interval. It may also be that the previews haven't been rendered, so it may be worth rendering them.

  • Exporting to After Effects for Time Lapse video

Using Lightroom 5, what are the best export settings for pics to be imported into After Effects in order to make a Time Lapse video?

    Hi(Bonjour)
Export with quicktime conversion to a movie encoded in animation codec for video aiff 16 bit 48khz to get better result. You'll get a pretty large uncompressed movie file.

  • Time-lapse videos

Is it possible to create time-lapse videos with iMovie?
The images would be imported from iPhone 4 with time-lapse apps such as iMotion HD, Timelapse, Gorillacam or single images made with the normal photocamera.
    Thanks for support!!

It is possible, but iMovie is not designed for this. I would not use iMovie except on a very short project.
Better tools are iStopMotion or QuickTime Pro.

  • How do I convert time lapse still images into a video in Premire Elements 13?

I have 250 images taken at 15 second intervals that I want to convert to a video. I am not having any luck finding how to get elements to put the single pictures together. After I import the images I can play them but have not been able to shorten the time each still plays. So It is like a slide shot and not time lapse.

  • When I try to make a time lapse in lightroom it cuts off the end of the video

In Lightroom 5, (It came with Photoshop Creative Cloud), I upload a series of photos, edit them together, then select slideshow and a Template Bowers - User Template - 23.97fps Time-lapse, downloaded from, https://www.youtube.com/redirect?q=http%3A%2F%2Flightroom-blog.com%2Fpresets%2Flrtimelapse .zip&redir_token=U79NuJdMuv4axu4RigPjzH5hxpd8MTQxNzI1NjExM0AxNDE3MTY5NzEz
I then export the video it processes like normal. BUT when I watch it back it misses out the end of videos. I am an  A-Level Student and I need to use this for my course, please Help.
    Alex O'Sullivan

If you have creative cloud, there is a far better way to make a time-lapse using Photoshop. The Lightroom way works but is a very slow kludge that creates files that you have to recompress to make them work. I would only use this if you don't have Photoshop or quicktime Pro. Here is the first link that shows up when I google "creating timelapse with photoshop": http://photofocus.com/2014/02/06/assembling-a-time-lapse-video-in-adobe-photoshop/

  • I shot a time lapse video by mistake, how can I slow it down to see it

HHow can Islow down a time lapse video to see it. Shot by mistake

A time lapse video records frames at a set interval. There is NO other information recorded between those frames.
You can slow it down and watch each frame for a longer period of time, but you will see no other information than what is originally recorded.

  • Edit Star Time Lapse videos shot on a G16 to bring out better colors?

Is there a good way to edit the Star Time Lapse videos shot on a G16 to bring out better colors?

    Hi bfreddy1!
    Thank you for posting.
Video can be edited to change how the colors are represented by most commercially available video editing software applications.  We do not make any of our own directly, so we cannot advise you on a specific workflow, but you may want to check into what features are supported by the various applications out there on the market.

  • Problem to create a time-lapse video

    Hello all,
I'm encountering a problem with my CS5.1 , let me explain . I want to create a time-lapse video from many pictures i've taken,  But when i go to File------Automate------Batch , then I'm supposed to find in Actions something called "Time-Lapse processing " or something like this, but it's not there !!
Can you help me in how i can get this work, please ? much appreciated.

    Welcome to the forum.
It appears that you are looking to process your Still Images in Photoshop, with an Action, and then via Automate to Batch. Is that correct?
Premiere Pro does not use Actions, and has no Automate>Batch.
However, if one is doing Time-Lapse Video, PrPro can do that nicely.
First, will you have any Video, or only Still Images?
If ONLY Still Images, then you must address your intended delivery, say DVD-Video, or BD, or streaming media. That will determine your Project/Sequence Preset.
Let's say that you intend to create a BD (Blu-ray Disc), in full-HD, then you can choose a 1920 x 1080 Project, at a FPS for where you are, such as NTSC = 29.97 FPS.
After you have perhaps Scaled your Still Images in Photoshop, and named them in sequence, such as ____00001 through ____0000x, all in one folder, you can then Import that Numbered Still Sequence into PrPro, and even add a Transition, if needed.
For most true Time-Lapse, one would choose a Duration of 1 Frame, but for a bit of a Stop-Motion "look," then 3 - 5 Frame Duration might be better. You can always experiment with a few of your Images, to see what suits your tastes and desires. For most of what I do, the Stop-Motion look is my choice, and I will usually choose a Duration of 3 Frames, with a tiny Cross-Dissolve between those Frames. This is your artistic choice. There is no right, or wrong choice.
Hope that helps, and for the Photoshop aspect, you might want to post the question here: http://forums.adobe.com/community/photoshop/general
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Flicker Reduction on Time Lapse Video Sequences

Lately I have been doing a lot of time lapse video sequences with my still camera and intervolometer. I import these into AE and make HD Quicktime Movies. The camera is set on the apeture preferred setting so the only the shutter speed varies to compensate for different exposure values. When shooting subject matter that is brightly lit, like moving clouds against a sunset,I get a slight flickering or strobing effect. Are there any tools in Shake that would reduce the strobing effect? Perhaps adjusting the slight variations in exposure values.

The PixelAnalyzer node is made for just this type of situation.
Check out the Shake manual, pages 631-635.
You'll find the node in the Other tab.
