How to make an odd shaped pie chart

Hi there,
I was wondering how difficult it would be to translate stats into an odd shaped object, to be divideed up into a pie. Oviously I could make a normal pie. overlay it and split the object up according to the angles, but this would result in un even area mass (ideally the area of each slace should equate to the percentage of each figue).
Hope this makes sense (my brains feeling slightly mushy thanks for excessive analysis of recycling statistics!
Kind regards D.E

DE,
In a stump chart case like this it would seem appropriate to use the pith as the starting point of the chart.
The following images show a relatively simple way of making a quite accurate division in connexion with a stump that has a strongly asymmetric shape with reaction wood.
Always keep a copy of the artwork at different stages.
I) shows the stump, the stroke/nofill annual rings and the pith as a group kept on top and (mostly) locked in the following steps, the stroked and filled (outer) shape of the stump being worked with.
II) shows a division aid in the form of a 360 (1 degrees) pie chart, made from a Polar grid with 0 Concentric Dividers and 360 Radial Dividers: the Radial Dividers are extended past the outer circle, and the pie pieces are formed by Pathfinder>Divide.
III) shows the division aid centred over the pith.
IV) shows the stump moved on top of the division aid, its fill covering the inner part.
V) shows the result of Object>Path>Divide Objects Below where the stump has cut the division aid.
VI) shows the result when the outlying superfluous parts of the division aid have been deleted.
Now the division aid consists of 360 closed paths, each spanning 1 degree, all starting/meeting at the pith. These should be Ungrouped.
At any time up to this point, the total stump area may be determined, for older versions the free Telegraphics PathArea Filter may be used (available at http://www.telegraphics.com.au/sw/browse/Filters).
Now it is easy to select a number of closed paths of the division aid and use the PathArea filter (or whatever) to determine the proportion of the total area (simple division), to adjust by adding/removing and/or undoing/redoing, and then to Pathfinder>Unite (or whatever it is called in the version in question) to create a piece of the pie, and finally to increase the Stroke Weight as desired.
VII) shows the result of creating the top piece of 11%.
VIII) shows the result of creating all the pieces (made clockwise one at a time), the three 11% pieces (the first one and the two last ones) chosen to be alike, thus showing the great difference(s) in angles for identical areas.
This procedure leads to a great number of Anchor Points in the bark; it is possible to get rid of them by scaling the pieces with the pith as the key object, placing the original stump path on top, and Object>Path>Divide Objects Below, then delete the outlying parts.
It is also possible to move the pieces apart, away from the pith, if there is a wish to hurt the stump (even more).
The accuracy is well within 0.1% of the total stump area for the least accurate pieces.

  • Creating a donught shaped pie chart with javascript elements

    Good morning chaps,
    We recently built our new company website which we're happy enough with. However one element we tried to capture was an interactive donught shaped pie chart, using javascript to click on each seperate section.
    The end result can be viewed at;
    http://insight247.co.uk/index.php?page=aboutus
    You'll notice imemdiately that the part that's a little off is the text which sits in each section. IS there an easier way to combine the graphic, text and javascript to achieve the effect we're looking for?
    Many thanks to all responses.

    Stephen,
    There are a few strange parts: the irregular text, the irregular shapes of the underlying ring parts (which do not have consistent widths at the gaps), and the outer glow (or whatever) which correponds to a full ring on the inside but partially to separate objects on the outside.
    IS there an easier way
    Maybe not easier, but more accurate; the specific appearance is somewhat demanding.
    To get the right shape of both ring parts and letters and different choices concerning the outer glow, you may (Smart Guides are your friends):
    1) Create a fill/nostroke rectangle with the same height as the ring parts and an arbitrary length, then Object>Transform>Move a copy by the length, then Ctrl/Cmd+D to repeat 4 times;
    2) Select all six rectangles and in the Brushes palette flyout tick New Brush, select Art Brush with default settings;
    3) Create a 1pt stroke/nofill circle corresponding to the middle of the ring parts where the text bits are supposed to be, apply the Art brush to it, Object>Expand Appearance, and move the circle to the top in the Layers palette, above the Group;
    4) Direct Select each of the 6 ring parts and apply the desired colour (you may rotate later, see below);
    5) Select the stroked circle and with the Scissors Tool click where the ring parts meet (Smart Guides say intersect except at the sides where they say anchor) so you have 6 circle parts to match the ring parts, then select the 4 circle parts that are not at top and bottom and Object>Path>Add Anchor Points so you have a centre point for each of them (you had one already at top and bottom);
    6) Select one of the circle parts and with the Path Type Tool click on the centre point, then type the text bit and in the Character palette adjust the Baseline Shift once and for all (you may need to tick Show Options in the flyout);
    7) Repeat 6) for the other circle parts (except the Baseline Shift);
    8) Select the ring parts group and Effect>Stylize>Outer Glow, adjust the colour (black) and settings to make it look as desired;
    9) With the Direct Selection Tool click where two ring parts meet (avoid the Path Type) to select an end segment and Ctrl/Cmd+C+F+X+F to create a straight stroke/nofill path at the very top of the stacking order, then change the Stroke Weight to the desired width of the gap between ring parts and change the Colour to white;
    10) Repeat 9) on the opposite side of the circle, select both 9) and 10) and rotate copies twice by 60 degrees, group all;
    11) Rotate everything by 30 degrees to amtch the angles of the image.
    Now you have the final appearance with white gaps. If you want to have gaps in the same colour as the background, you may:
    12) Select everything and in the Appearance palette flyout tick Make Opacity Mask, with Clip unticked and Invert Mask ticked.
    If you want to hide the outer glow at the gaps at the outside (as in the image) or at the inside or both, you may extend the lines in 9) and 10) at either or both ends.

  • How to show negative value in Pie Chart from Webi?

    I have below example data, I want to convert this to a pie chart in Web Intelligence, my problem is after I convert it to a pie chart, the revenue '-30' is shown as '30', looks like the pie chart is not suppor the negative value to show, I want to know if there is any workaround or solution to make the pie chart to show the negative value? Is this behavior is by design? do we have any official document to explain this?
    The product I used is BOE XI 3.1 SP3.
    Department    Revenue
    A                      100
    B                       -30
    C                        80

    Why are you showing this information as a pie chart? It doesn't make sense to try and display a negative slice in a pie chart. I can't really think of a logical way to try and draw a negative slice in a pie chart. With a pie chart you will need all your information to either all be positive or all negative, otherwise it doesn't work.
    What you need is to have a bar chart, with positive and negative values on the y axis.

    Hi sz,
    Although the Numbers User Guide (which you should find in the iWork 08 folder in your Applications folder) does say, "You can also drag an image to mask a shape with an image," I didn't have any success when trying to do so.
    The best I was able to do was to place the pie chart in front of or behind a tomato image, then set the transparency of whichever was in front to allow the other to show through. Although I'm not really happy with the result, here's a sample, with the chart in front. The chart's Fill has been set to None, and the opacity of the 'slice' colours has been set to 30%. The colours used for the slices are shown in the chart's legend.
    You might achieve an improved result by experimenting with the colours and opacity settings.

  • How to make text scroll in a chart/graph

    I am trying to make a small example labview app.
    I need to show a graph/chart with continuous data measurements, plotted over time. So far I have been using charts, since they suit my needs. I have seen though, that graphs are also a possibility. So if a solution calls for that, it might be ok.
    Now I have two things that i dont know how to do. I have attached a picture of what i want to do.
    I need to have time on the x axis, but i can only get it in the end points of the scale, can this be fixed (see the attached picture example)
    I also need to mark phase starts endings. This means I need to have text scrolling along with the plot, keeping a white marker line at the starte point of the phase. Can thios be done somehow? I have already looked into Annotations, but I dont think thats it. (see the attached picture.)
    If further explanation is needed, I would be happy to supply it.
    Kind regards Daniel

    One option with graphs is to right click the graph when the code is running, select "Create Annotation". This will add a label to the graph that moves as the graph updates.
    An alternative, and probably prettier approach, was discussed recently here;

  • How to create Leader Lines for Pie Chart Labels

    I like Numbers but the restrictions they force are sometime just too much.
    Example: Labels
    The restriction of only being able to move a label of a wedge on a parallel axis is ridiculous. Here Excel clearly out shines Numbers.
    I want an option to add a leader to a "Value" label so I can move it away from an area that is too crowded or the space for it is limited.
    Yes, I know I could just not turn Labels on in Numbers and then use a text box to place the value anywhere I wish and then draw in a leader to fit my needs. But that is no solution just a horrible work-around.
    Come on Apple. You've started a nice product here but gee-whiz, golly-gee, it's hard to adopt your products as MS replacements when so many basic features are missing.

    AlbertEinstein,
    And I don't understand why you are even posting here. What in your reply was useful to my issue? Seriously, if you're here on this board just to spout opinions, might I suggest you take up blogging.
    As for me, I'm here to try to find an answer to my problem. If you're knowledgable and know that it can't be done then just saying so the way Badunit did. It wasn't the answer I was looking for but at least he was trying to be constructive.
    OK, so to your point. You've been using spreadsheets since Visicalc, good for you. My issue isn't with the spreadsheet part of Numbes, but rather with the charting technology.
    Well I was a draftsperson when all there was, was boards and T-Squares. And a common rule is if your information is too close, overlaps, etc to be understood then you use a leader to move it to an area where it is not so cluttered.
    Your issues with OpenOffice and MS Office I can't address because I'm not interested in either of those products within this thread.
    So please if you have a suggestion as to how to solve my issue then I welcome your comments. But if you're here just to "complain" about others complaining I can just ask, what's your point?

  • How to make editable pieces of pie/circle segments?

    I want a graphic a bit like this:
    How can I draw so that each of these 50 segments is an independent object that I can fill with color or delete?
    Also, out of curiosity: what is this kind of plot called - is it a radar graph? Or a polar graph? I'm pretty sure it has a name, I just don't know what it is.

    Marie,
    That is just another way of creating it. Often there are multiple/several ways of creating things, sometimes with different advantages. They way you created this allows more freedom, such as not being bound by specific integer ratios between the circles.
    You can still select everything and Pathfinder>Divide to get the 50 closed paths to fill separately, after Ungrouping if you wish.
