I downloaded the Safari extension and Safari finds it in the Extensions tab. In General, though, it is not one of my options. I rebooted the computer to no effect. Thank you

If you want to fix your Google search to a specific Google location, or a specific alternative search engine, I recommend that you download and install the free plug-in Glims:

Not only does it already list a number of search engines and regions, but you can also add any other search engine not already listed in Glims by using the method described here:

Just enter the name you give the search engine in the name field, and the URL for it in the Query URL field.

How do I make it so that when I search with my address bar it ALWAYS uses Google, regardless of what search engine is selected in the search bar? It used to be like this, but a recent Firefox update altered it. Clarification:
I believe now you potentially lose all extensions, plug-ins when you use the new reset function, but you will let me know.
If that is the case, your find corrupt file method maybe better. However, I reviewed the two help articles and there appear to be more files than just the delete search.json file and a possible search.sqlite file in the Firefox Profile Folder. I am confused. Then I have to find the folders. I think help articles mentioned how to find the profile containing the files, but not sure.

I have tried to change mine in safari, thru the code writing and all, it will not stop going to bing as my search engine. How do I get rid of that and get my google as my search engine? Nothing has worked and Ive done it all? Please help me out someone.

How do I change Default search engine in the address bar, not the search window on the top right or by using about:config, doesn't work. Worked fine until this FF 8.0 update, now defaults to Yahoo 7. About to throw it in and use Chrome.

When Firefox 8.0 installed it has automatically changed my address bar default search engine to Yahoo7 which is crap. I can not change this back. So when I start FF it opens to my google home page, when I type a subject and search the results are displayed in a Yahoo 7 results page, not google. I am not talking about my default home page or the search bar to the top right. This is still google.
The settings in about:config do nothing.
This was fine until FF 8.0.

Pernich and I want to know; If you type search criteria directly into the address bar and hit enter, how to change that search engine from Yahoo to Google.
Otherwise I too will go back to using Google Chrome, even though I really like FF8.0

I know in previous incarnations of Foxfire I could use about:config and change Keyworld.url to change my default search engine. I recently reset my Foxfire because I've been having issues with the Origin website and.. now it's defaulted back to Google. I do not want to use google. How do I change this? That does not help me at all. I do not want the Search Bar. I don't wanna change the default on the search bar. Why would ANYONE want a search bar when the address bar does the searching for you?
I want to change the default on the ADDRESS bar. The main bar and only bar I have. The one that if you type in anything, it automatically searches Google and there seems to be no way to change it. You could change it before by going to about:config and changing Keyword.url, but Foxfire removed that. Now.. I want to take the Address bar off it's default of Google and switch it to something else.
Once again, I want NOTHING to do with the Search Bar. I don't want it, don't want to change what it searches, nothing. I never use it and never have. I want to change the ADDRESS bar's default search.

I am asking this question again, because upon checking the forum for a solution I was shocked and appalled by the severe lack of grammar, punctuation and spelling I encountered while reading answers to this question. Obviously several people where to busy to actually read the question being asked and simply answered with instructions on how to change the default search engine for the search bar. SO, here I am asking the same question, why? because it still has not been answered and I myself still CANNOT find this setting anywhere. I use multiple browsers for different tasks, Chrome is KICKING the .... out of you guys Mozilla, why did you ever let your self get taken in by Micro-crack (Microsoft), if I recall correctly the inception of this program was partly motivated by the need for an alternative to the idiosyncrasies and vulnerability of Microsoft Internet Explore. This really feels like a HUGE step backwards, I would love to see a return to the days when Mozilla Firefox was and inspiration to developers and techs everywhere. Sometime Bing is not located in the Add/Remove programs section of the control panel.

Every time I restart Firefox my search engine reverts back to yahoo, how do I fix this permanently. I only want to use google to search for things it is much more efficient. Is there some firefox connection to yahoo that is causing this?

Since I wanted to be rid of Yahoo and get Google back - in the last part instead of typing "Yahoo" I typed "Google".

Every time I get online my search engine is ask UI have typed in google into my about:config settings many times yet my search engine remaines ASK (it changes back every time and iI used the google URL on firefox's help page)how do I fix this so that my search remaines with goole not ASK because I hate ASK(no offense ask).

Quit the application.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

Safari won't make Google my default search engine. + Top Sites issue.

I am running 10.9.5, latest iMac, latest Safari.
Here's my issue. Safari won't make Google my default search engine.
I switched it in preferences, and it says the default search engine is 'Google', as well as saying it even saying 'Google' in the Toolbar text field.
However the results always come back in Yahoo. I've tried resetting Safari, opening and closing the app but no luck.
Also I have it set to show 24 Top Sites, but it only displays 12 and it's been stuck on the same 12 sites for 2 days.
I'm assuming these two might be related as they are both preferences which stubbornly refuse to save as defaults.
Any one else having these issues? Anyone know how to fix?

Complaint: Make Bing your default search engine s...

I lost a lot of trust in Skype when they recently published an update and had the installer try to trick me into making Bing my default search engine and MSN my default home page.
These kinds of "viral payloads" do more harm than good because:
1) They feel like cheap tricks and erode at our trust in the company and product.
2) They make the payload in question seem pathetic. How good can Bing and MSN be if Microsoft has to trick people into using them? It's like parents trying to pay other children to be their child's friend.
3) They are predatory practices that prey on people who aren't technologically savy enough to change the settings -- and who just assume that the checked boxes need to be checked.
4) People feel tricked and betrayed.
Come on Microsoft... Is it really work it?

You may have installed one or more of the common types of ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it. It's been reported that some variants of the "VSearch" malware block access to the page. If that happens, start in safe mode by holding down the shift key at the startup chime, then try again.
Back up all data before making any changes.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.

If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
if it's not already checked.
