How to make it so layer effects pulldown isn't pulled down by default?

In photoshop, when an effect is applied to a layer, an "FX" arrow pulldown automatically appears showing the applied effects (i.e. dropshadow, stroke, etc). Often i find myself copying a layer style and pasting it to a bunch of layers at the same time. Then i find myself having to spend the time hitting that little pulldown arrow for the layer effects. I don't like them showing because the layer panel gets too crowded. Is there a way to change this default?
I was also wondering if there is a way to change the layer color for a bunch of layers all at the same time without having to group them?

We don't have
palettes in CS4 anymore, they're called
panels now.

How to flatten without losing layer effects' "looks"

I am working on a client project involving photoshop files, each containing lots of layers and a fair amount of layer effects...things like drop shadow, glow, bevel, etc.
I am not having luck flattening these images (which I need to do) without losing the look of the original.
For example, the shadows might be there, but they aren't as dark, or the glows might not be as bright.
I am using CS4 for Mac OS X, and this vendor used a Windows version of photoshop, but I don't know which version.

("reduce to the background layer") is not used in the English version of Photoshop. Not even
"reduce". :)
The menu item labeled "Auf die Hintergrundebene Reduzieren" (oder so was ähnliches) in German is labeled with a single word in English:
Flatten.
I know how hard it is to refer to specifics in a version in a different language when you don't have it available. It's not a question of just translating the word. "Layers" in the German version are not
layers at all but
planes (»Ebenen«, nicht »Schichten«). Took me a few seconds to figure that one out when I started out to learn Photoshop. :)
The concept of "Reducing" is not used in the English version at all. "Sichtbare Ebenen auf eine Ebene reduzieren" is simply
Merge Visible.

How to make background of layer transparent so just the object shows up?....

Hi, I don't know if there's a way to do what I'm trying to but I'm trying to take a jpg picture that I uploaded onto my photoshop elements editor, then using the maze I have on microsoft word to make a maze out of the picture. I was able to paste the maze over the picture by using the over lay option for the 2nd layer and making it more transparent but the lines are getting too transparent also and you can't see some of the lines at all that is over white areas. Is there another way that I can make it so that the lines (of the maze) only show up and make it so the white background is totally transparent?
I'm also wondering how I can change the whole background color without affecting the picture or anything else. This is my first time playing with the elements editor, I was just thinking I guess I could make a botttom layer and make the layer the color I want or will it bleed through to the other layers or the other layers just cover it up? I really don't know what I'm doing and really don't know about these layers, I'm surprised I was able to do what I did.

With this image, it will be easiest to select the white background.
1. I would recommend using the Quick Select Tool. Select the white background.
2. Because you want the lung guy on his own layer not the white background, you need to invert the selection. Select<Inverse.
3. Copy the lung guy onto his own layer. On PC, press ctrl + J. If on a Mac, the shortcut is cmd + J.
4. You can now copy/paste lung guy in the desired photo. Alternately, you can drag his layer from the layers palette and drop him into the other document. (If the resolution of lung guy doesn't match your image's resolution, he will shrink or expand as his layer will take on the resolution of the document he is moved into.)
Note: I would not use the lettering as you can see where the lung guy's image overlaps. It will be an easier project if you redo the lettering in Word or use the Photoshop Element's text tool...maybe with text warp and a layer style....to add the text.

Would indesign be the best place to make this in?

InDesign is good for doing that. I created three layers (no required, but helps to isolate the elements).
First, create a colored background.
Second, make a layer for the white bars. I duplicated one, then used Object > Transform Again > Transform Again to make the rest. Then I grouped them.
Apply the Effect called Gradient Feather to the group. Adjust the settings as shown.
Add a type layer.

You realyl just need a greyscale image and then use blending modes like add or multiply. To create fine hairlines in Ae you could use the lightning and advanced lightning effects, shards can be mimiced with a cell pattern effect. and then you can throw on further effects liek fractal noise, distortions, roughen edges. A million ways, but if these short descrriptions sound Chinese to you, then you seriously must start at the beginning.

As I (mis)understand it, you may:
1) Type>Create Outlines and Object> Ungroup;
2) Select all letters and Object>Path>Offset Path by a negative amount so you get the right width of the bevels between the inner and outer lettershapes;
3) Select the inner lettershapes, copy them, and hide the copies;
4) Select everything, change from fill to stroke, and Object>Compound Path>Release;
5) To rip the shapes apart, perform (the bare steps in the script/action James has made, see below):
5a) Select>Object>Direction Handles;
5b) Edit>Cut;
5c) Delete;
5d) Edit>Paste In Front;
6) To create the bevels, combine pairs of corresponding inner and outer paths (which formed segments of the inner and outer lettershapes):
6a) Select inner and outer path;
6b) Object>Path>Join;
6c) Select all and change from stroke to fill;
7) Show the copies of the inner lettershape paths hidden in 3).
Now you have all the parts as separate closed paths, and you can colour them as desired.
There may be less silly ways.

How to make a ghost special effect

Hi All,
My son is trying to do a cool little "Ghost" effect for a class video project.
I was thinking that we could go with first shooting an image of the area the "Ghost" will appear. Then, without changing the camera angle, shoot the video part. Once I have the video, if I could modify the transparency of the video clip, I could make it look like he is a ghost.
However, I cannot seem to find anywhere to modify the transparency of a video clip.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Robert - you can adjust the transparency on a Cutaway. With the camera on a tripod (or resting on something stationary), shoot the background scene - with no movement at all in the background. Now, keeping the camera in the exact same position and retaining the same focal length (wide angle/zoom position), video your son in front of the background for slightly less time than the duration of the first clip.
Make sure that Advanced Tools are turned on (menu iMovie>Preferences). Import the clips into iMovie. Drag the first (background) clip into a project. Now drag the 2nd clip (your son) over the first clip and drop it. A pop-up menu will appear - select Cutaway. Click on the gear icon (cogwheel) on the Cutaway clip and select Clip Adjustments. In the Inspector that appears, you will see an item labelled Opacity - adjust the slider to the desired opacity level.
Unless I've missed a step, you're now done! Hope it works for you. Bear in mind that you can also use Cross Dissolves between clips to create an illusion of people appearing and disappearing, providing there is no change to the background.
EDIT: Forgot to mention - in the Inspector you can also select a Fade duration which will fade the Cutaway in and out. Using this you can make the "ghost" seem to gradually appear and disappear, much like the Cross Dissolve method I mentioned above. Now that would be cool!
You could also use the X-ray effect on the Cutaway, found under Video Effects in the Clip Adjustments tab of the Inspector. Gets better all the time!

Interesting. He really only has 3 layers of PNG files. When you move the hover position of the mouse, he offsets the foreground layer the most, the middle the second most and the furthest back the least. So it just seems like you need a little code that finds the center of the browser and then adjust the position of the layers based on how far your mouse is from center (positive or negative).
I'm sure somebody good with js could write the code faster than it would take to build the graphic.

How to make a strobe-like effect on my videos?

Hey guys, I'm kind of a noob at iMovie, but I'm putting a guitar cover on youtube, and want to put somekind of strobe effect on it, whether it be with brightness or colors. The way to do this is to use a fast fade through white transition between clips.

I have tried to delete all generated Java/class files, but the new JSP file will not be read.

How to make the tree sibling nodes sorting in memory per the VO default?

Hi,
I have a question on the uncommitted tree nodes sorting. The tree was built using the same VO with the view link to itself (parent/child relation). I have defined a default sorting on my VO. Now if I insert a node to the tree, the sibling nodes may not sort correctly if it is not committed. I tried to insert it to the RowsetIterator at the right position, it seems OK. but when you right click or something that make the tree to refresh, the order will mess up. If I do an auto save after each action, everything looks OK. But the fusion pattern is to do a global save, I have to manipulate the tree with the uncommitted data. I know I can set the view object's SQL mode to do the in-memory sorting. But not sure if it works on the tree structure, because it is not a single RowsetIteroator.. Can someone give an advice? I did try that, and as I mentioned in the previous posting, it doesn't work for the tree nodes (multiple RowSetIterator). the following is my code, where the treeVO is the vo instance for the firstLevel tree nodes and it has view link to its children. I am not sure how to sort all children for each level. Even for the first level where I did the explicit sorting in memory, it still not sorting at all.
