How to make Mac OS X virtual machine on my mac mini?

Dear All,
I've just bought mac mini device, upgraded my memory (now I have 16GB).
The mac os was already installed on this device, and there were NO DVR or blue-ray media in the box which contains the installation of the OS X.
Now I want to install  VirtualBox, WMWare or other virtualization (still don't know which one to select)
and I want to create a guest machine with the same OS X.  As far as I know, the license on OS X permits to run OS X guest under OS X host.
But here is the question:  the VirtualBox software will ask me "give me a disk with installation of OS", where shall I get this disk?
What shall I give to the virtual machine software to install the same OS X that is running on my mac mini?
Regards,
Ihor.

Actually, with Parallels9, if you have OSX Lion or later
as the host OS, you can create an OSX VM with no disks
and just an internet connection.   Parallels will utilize
the RecoveryHD on the host and do an internet recovery
to the create the VM.  If you have fast internet, this is the
simplest approach.
If you have previously purchased Lion or Mountain Lion,
you can redownload the installer and extract the install image
from the package.  Then, with Parallels anyway, when prompted for
an install disk , you select the image.
As far as licensing, running Lion, Mountain Lion, and Mavericks
in a virtual machine does not violate the EULA as long as
the VM is run on Apple hardware.
From the EULA for Lion
(iii) to install, use and run up to two (2) additional copies or instances of the Apple Software
within virtual operating system environments on each Mac Computer you own or control that
is already running the Apple Software.
From the EULA for Mavericks:
(iii) to install, use and run up to two (2) additional copies or instances of the Apple
Software within virtual operating system environments on each Mac Computer you own
or control that is already running the Apple Software, for purposes of: (a) software
development; (b) testing during software development; (c) using OS X Server; or (d)
personal, non-commercial use.

I had creative cloud installed in a parallels deskto virtual machine on my mac, I delete the virtual machine without deactivate the creative cloud. after reinstall a new VM running windows 8.1. pro 64 bits, I downloaded the creative cloud installer but it does not install ang give an Error code 72, it is assuming that I already are using the Creative cloud in 2 computer, but itis no the case, how to solve this situation?

Dave: I did the Microsoft Update two days before this happened, and rebooted as required.  I just created a new restore point and lauched Creative Cloud.  Now I get the famous white screen:
It just sits and spins (been 10 minutes now).
Fortunately, I saved away this command (which I've had to use 4 or 5 times already):
    del %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Adobe\OOBE\opm.db
Unfortunately now, I get this (even after closing the above window):
The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.
So I killed everything that said "Adobe" in the task manager and this time, the command succeeded.
Fortunately, the current apps seem to still work.  I can't seem to find the "Creative Cloud" app in the applications on my system, but I launched Photoshop CC, told it to look for updates, and got a list of the 5 prgorams that need updates in the Adobe Application manager:
I will proceed with the updates, holding my breath.

  • How to make linux bootable off a usb stick on mac

Guys i was wondering how to make linux bootable off a usb stick on mac, since i dont have a optical drive in my mac, plus i need it for university

I have the same question, but parsed differently.  What people have tried answering here is:
how to (make linux (bootable off a usb stick on mac))
What I'm trying to find is:
how to make ((linux bootable off a usb stick) on mac)
That is, I don't want to boot from the usb stick on my mac; I want to write an ISO to a usb stick that's plugged into my Macbook Pro (Mavericks), then carry the stick to a different machine (several discarded Windows boxes in fact), plug it in there, and watch it boot on that machine.  I've done a bit of googling, but everything I find talks about making USB drives with content that can be booted on a Mac.  What I'm wondering is if it's possible to write to use my Mac to write bootable USB gadgets that work on other machines that aren't running OSX software.
Anyone know if this is discussed anywhere?  If not, what's the right forum to ask it on?  And how do I ask it so that I don't get yet another explanation of how to make something that will boot on my Mac?
I have several linux ISOs waiting.  Actually, I could do the job on one of several available linux boxes.  But I'd like to do it on my portable laptop, which at the moment is this Macbook Pro.

  • Installing Acrobat 9 Pro on a virtual machine on my Mac using Parallels.  Not an upgrade but being asked what I upgraded from.

I'm installing Acrobat 9 Pro for Windows on a virtual machine on my Mac (running Parallels).  I successfully installed the same program using the same discs on the same Mac previously, but that virtual machine became corrupt and can no longer be launched.  For this re-installation, the installation sequence is asking what version I upgraded from - but as this is not an upgrade, I get stuck at that step and am unable to complete the installation.  What should my next step be?

    Hi Akselowner,
This error usually comes up if the serial number you are using is an Upgrade serial number.
In such a case the installer will prompt to enter the previous qualifying version serial number.
Please send me a private message with the serial number and I will validate and confirm that for you.
If you do not have the previous qualifying version serial number then the current serial number needs to be unlocked.

  • How do I run a Windows virtual machine?

I have a program for my research (Scigress) that only runs on Windows. I would like to be able to run the program on my Mac, I assume the best way to do that is to run a virtual machine. I don't want to run Windows all the time, since I strongly dislike Windows. Is there a way to do this in which I can turn Windows off as soon as I'm done with that program? What would be the best way to do this, or the best app to use? I have a 2009 Macbook with Lion installed.

I apologize, dragon. I didn't fully read your post well before opening my mouth. Sorry, "the ADD" has me (even as a grown man).
You have really two fundamental choices here on where you could take this. My primary concern above all would be "how resource intensive is this Windows software"? I mean, is it like a CAD or other 3D modeling app or otherwise just... monster? Working in the tech field I have seen CAD programs opening a complex drawing nearly bring say... a dual Xeon, 16GB RAM, 2-4GB of VRAM with cards in tandem (Crossfire or SLI in the PC world, I don't know if it's called the same over here)... but it would literally freeze these beasts of workstations solid for 5-20 minutes while opening and rendering some of these mind-blowing CAD drawings (talented guys, no way I could manage to create some of those 3D models of such just... complexity... in a virtual environment).
So-- with that being said, that's worst case scenario on the software. That would pretty much really cripple your luck with virtualization/emulation of a guest OS (that is, the operating system that is running "under the command") of the main one you're running.
If the program is not that kind of one, it would certainly be more convenient to you to just literally almost open "Windows" like it's just another app, literally... and close it/shut it down as soon as you're done, leaving your other OS X desktop work up and running.
If it *is* going to be a resource hog, then your second option is Boot Camp, which I'm sure you've heard of... You basically split the hard drive (partition it) into two segregated areas of storage and literally you can run either/or and utilize the full power of the machine this way, as you're not sharing CPU/memory. The downside, as sort of mentioned-- is that you have to boot into one or the other, it's not a "program" like the other is, almost; so you'd have to "shut down" or use the little utility app at least to reboot into OS X.
Think about your circumstances and take a look at that article comparing or also research Allan's suggestion, that is a new one to me. That will at least get you familiar with what the "experience" of virtualizing operating systems is like... then let us know what you think is best and we can go from there and help you. Sorry about jumping the gun earlier. Hope I made up for it with an abundance of information at least the second time...

  • No pdf printer in mac - so No pdf printer available in 'virtual machine' on the mac-any suggestions?

I am running Mac OS X version 10.6.2 and I installed CS4 on the laptop.  I have Acrobat 9 Pro - and no pdf 'printer' due to Mac's new operating system.  Unfortunately, I also have a virtual machine on my laptop running Windows XP (with VMWare Fusion).  I need the 'pdf printer' in my virtual machine to create pdf's from my Windows programs.   When I bought the Mac version of CS4 (including Acrobat) I didn't know the 'printer' wasn't included and I can't see buying another Acrobat for Windows....does anyone have any suggestions for installing the pdf printer so my virtual machine has access to the printer?

Hey, guys! be careful, there's a sneaky catch with this "no-pdf-printer" thing.
The warning, concerns mostly the pros (publishers, editors, typographers....) who are used in CMYK chromatic gamut.
The catch is this: you get a CMYK archive, all right, but the color tone IS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT than the one you were used to get with the old good method. That's because, when you choose the "save as adobe pdf" option, initially you get an RGB CONVENTIONAL arch (check the "colors" tag: there 's no CONVENTIONAL CMYK option available). Of course, if you choose to Distill it so that your final arch is a PDF CMYK, what you finally get IS a CMYK archive, BUT: THE COLOR TONE IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT! The Reds are pretty much down, and there's a green-ish cast upon it.
What you can do (and this could be an answer to the dear friend with the difficult onscreen name) is this:
You can install a virtual PPD PRINTER (an LPD). If you Google "virtual ppd printer for OS 10.6" you get the directions, DIRECTLY from Adobe (anyhow, the link is http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/404/kb404931.html).
And... VOI LA! You can use this (choosing as a PPD Device the "GENERAL IMAGESETTER") in order to make things the good old way (print it as a PS and after DISTILL it enjoyably!!!).
I wonder, why Apple want to make our lives difficult, pretending the same moment that it only makes them easier...
Well, it's pretty much understandable: SNOW LEOPARD is the "prova generalle" before LION is unleashed. They test us, they weigh us, they are watching our reactions, thus validating for FREE their products. They are clever! but being clever just by considering the others (and treat them) as if they were fools, IS NOT HONEST AT ALL!
    Got it Stevie?

  • L How many are running trials on Virtual Machines and under what software

I'm just curious here -- I'm not sure if this Forum has something like a POLL but I'm interested in what type of Virtual Machine setups people are using.
I'd like to know HOST OS (RAM size) , Guest OS (Ram size),  ABAP trial / JAVA trial / both, Virtual machine software (Vmware, Parallels, Virtual Box, Virtual PC or other).
Indication of stability, and how good the ABAP / JAVA trial performance is on the VM's as well.
Thanks in advance to anybody answering these questions for taking the time.
    Cheers
    jimbo

I am running the previous (SP11) version under Vmware Workstation 5.5.3 with XP SP2 on XP SP2.  The machine is a Dell 9300 laptop with 2GB.  I give the vm 1GB.  The machine is still happy to run its usual load of about 10 other applications (word, Freemind, Thunderbox, Firefox, SAPGui, etc.)  I don't run sapgui in the vm, I run it at the host level.  I stick with ABAP.  I am still hoping Java will go back to controlling dishwashers and toasters like the Good Lord originally intended.
It runs well in its gig.  I am presently monkeying around with WebDynpro and it performs beautifully.  Stability has been good except it hangs occasionally if I leave it all running when I suspend the host.  I suspect this has to do with network issues.  I make a point of shutting down the guest before I shut the lid.
I am going to activate autostart in the start profile so that the SAP system starts up when the vm boots.  That way I don't even have to log into it.

  • Windows virtual machine on a Mac mini

Can the Fusion drive in a Mac mini be partitioned to run a Windows7 virtual machine?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You don't have to partition the Fusion Drive to use a virtual machine. Depending on the app you use to make a virtual machine, the virtual machine is stored in Documents folder as a virtual hard drive, so you don't have to worry about it.
You can use Parallels, VMware Fusion or VirtualBox to create a virtual machine. VirtualBox is free and works correctly, so I suggest you to try that one first

    hi
i have VM's in Hyper V windows server 2012 data center edition.
i want to boot from SCSI drive for performance enhancement.
but when i select scsi then it doesnt boot and says boot failure no boot device found.
also tried with bios settings of VM but there is no option to select boot from SCSI.
so can anyone help me how to make it happen???
how to boot from SCSI drive in VM???
    thnx
    istiaq

Generation 1 virtual machines cannot boot from the virtual SCSI chain and 2012 does not support Generation 2 VMs. There is no meaningful performance difference between the virtual IDE and SCSI controllers anyway.

  • Does Time Machine make complete backups of Virtual Machines?

I am new to the forums, so forgive me if this has been asked before.
I have a MacBook Pro and have VMWare Fusion 3 installed.
I have Windows 7 and XP installed as virtual machines, and use an external hard drive to back up into using Time Machine. I have been given conflicting information regarding the backups being created by Time Machine.
I have been told that I should use a Windows backup program such as Acronis to back up the Windows installations separately from the Mac backups on the separate hard drive.
Someone else has told me that if I use Time Machine, then the Windows installations will be backed up automatically, as the Windows installations are effectively folders and files within the Mac software.
Just to confuse things, I have read somewhere that Time Machine cannot back up Boot partitions of Windows installations, but I can't remember where I read this.
I don't want to lose my Windows installations through not understanding the backup capabilities of Time Machine, so I am hoping that someone here can advise me as to what the best course of action would be please.
Can I trust Time Machine to back everything up and to be able to restore my whole machine, including Windows installations, from a Time Machine backup, or do I need to back up the Windows virtual machines separately by using Acronis.
    Thanks
    Kevin

    1. TM will not backup a Boot Camp Windows volume.
    2. TM will backup a VM disc image every time it changes unless you have excluded it via TM's Exclude list.
    3. If the VMs change often then TM will backup each change thus consuming large amounts of space on the backup drive which is not recommended. Thus, it's best to backup VMs separately from within Windows using a Windows backup utility.
    4. TM will not backup individual files and folders of a VM disc image. It will only backup the entire disc image.

    I don't know. I've never tried.
Look at the manual (7210midpSimGuide.pdf in the docs directory). Maybe there is something in there. In the command line options there are a bunch of tracing options that you can specify, like tracing allocations, garbage collections, stackmaps, etc.
