How to make Mavericks faster on an "older" MacBook Pro?
I have a late 2011 MacBook Pro, 2.2 GHz core i7 with 4 GB of RAM. I recently wiped my computer and restored to factory settings because it was getting slow, then I upgraded to Mavericks and it is even slower. It freezes often and takes a long time to load things. Is there any way to make it faster or improve it's function?
Oh wow, I must be REALLY out of it, haha, don't know how I missed that.

Did they mention Migration Assistant? You can use MA with FireWire, limit is the speed of the older unit. MA will guide you and allow you to choose what to transfer.

i've experienced identical symptoms repeatedly on my 15" mid-2007 MBP 2.4gHz Core 2 Duo with 6g (note, this is more than the 4g Apple officially okays for the machine, but is widely used and has never caused a problem previously), which was upgraded from 10.7.5 via the App Store. the mouse and all keys are unresponsive, requires holding down the power key for 10 secs to power down and then cold restart.
over the days since the Mavericks release, i've run many experiments, stripping out startup items, etc, with no change. however, it Does seem somehow related to sleep, in that it has happened 3-4x immediately after wake from sleep, and yesterday i ran for several hours without it crashing, during which i did not allow it to sleep. [n.b., it Did freeze once after i let the display sleep, but not the processor]
i've taken to shutting the machine down if i'm going to be away for a few hours, instead of sleeping it, and not allowing it to sleep in other situations, and thus far that seems to be working.Tree_Farmer,
Mavericks will start out running slowly because Spotlight is reïndexing your disk, due to all of the files that have changed in the OS. If it’s still running slowly after a couple of days, then it might be worth looking at Activity Monitor to see where it’s spending its time, and figuring out if that can be ameliorated, before considering a downgrade. -

For some odd reason, Photoshop isn't running smoothly on my mac despite going beyond the minimum requirements.
Wilnesse DericerThe problem was, I had moved the Aperture 1.0 application into a new folder (it is placed by default at the top level of the APplications folder), and it seems that the 1.5.2 update installer doesn't recognize it in other locations.
So, when I moved it backt out of the new folder into the Application folder again, everything worked just fine.

I have a table with huge volume of data. I am doing following activity using SQL script
1). alter table my_tab add new_col NUMBER(10);
2). update my_tab set new_col= 50;
3). alter table my_TAB modify new_col NOT NULL;
4). Create index on my_tab(new_col);
Above scrip is taking around 10 hours to excecute.
Could any one please suggest how to make it fast.

You haven't shown us the details of your table structure or an example of the data, or even how many rows is a "huge volume of data".
Without proper information we would just be guessing and that doesn't help anybody. -

I don't know how you received an upgrade for iTunes. You make it sound like it was sent to you. At most your computer will tell you of a new version and you tell it to download it and install it. However, a computer will not do this for a version which is incompatible. iTunes 10.7 came out a few weeks ago but your computer would not notify you and even if it did, 10.7 would refuse to install on your computer. So this part isn't making a lot of sense.
Two ways to get the 'newer version' message. One is to open your library on a computer running a newer version, and then try to open it with an older version. Usually happens when the library is on an external and used with multiple computers. The second way is if you have multiple versions of itunes installed on your computer.
The newest (and likely the last) iTunes for OSX 10.5.8 is iTunes 10.6.3 which has been out for quite a while.

Get info then check permissions then add your curent user name (it was probably different on old Mac) and give your username full read/write permissions.

VirtualBox is a new Open Source freeware virtual machine such as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris. It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM Fusion.
Note that Parallels and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc. There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization. The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system.
