How to make Photoshop square?

I'm working on a project in which I've been asked to make a series of square (yes, square) screenshots of the whole of the Photoshop workspace (showing an image in different stages of development).  I have a wide screen display with a screen resolution of 1920x1200 and the publisher has suggested I may need to find a new screen resolution to achieve square, full-workspace covering screenshots.  But surely I do not need to change my screen resolution -  all I have to do is manually drag the Photoshop window around until its square and then manually screen grab that square window.  But - how can I tell when the hand moved Photoshop workspace window is truely square?    I can do it by eye but that's too hit and miss.
Thanks for any help on this.
...I'm using FastStone Image Capture.

Thank you very much.  I think you have got me to the finishing line.  These are what I now have:
Thanks again.

• How to make photoshop work like mspaint

I know how dumb this sounds, but I could really use some help.
I was trying to use CS3 to resize an image (a page of a book), but  photoshop would open it in bitmap only. After realizing how much the  image quality would drop when resizing in bitmap, I tried to make  photoshop open the picture in a different mode like RGB, but I couldn't  figure out how. (The only mode I could change to was Grayscale, but it  was as bad as bitmap)
This has forced me to resize the picture in mspaint...
Below is one of the pictures I was trying to shrink; its current size is  about 2500x3200 (38k). I hope someone could tell me how to resize these  kind of pictures in photoshop (I'd settle for mspaint if resizing were  the only thing I needed to do)

• How to make Photoshop save Aperture imported JPEG images as JPEGs

Recently, I upgraded from Photoshop CS 5 to CS 5.1.
My point and shoot cameras record in JPEG format. Often, I'll import those photos into Aperture and then tweak them in Photoshop using the Edit in External Editor command. My preferences for the external editor in Aperture were set to 8-bit, Photoshop
With Photoshop CS 5, I would edit the photo and choose Save and the edited photo would be saved back to Aperture as a new version, in a JPEG format.
Now, using Photoshop CS 5.1, when the imported image from Aperture is converted into a PSD file and when I save back to Aperture, I end up with a PSD file.
How can I revert to how it was before? JPEG image in Aperture, opened in external editor Photoshop as a JPEG, edited in Photoshop, then saved back to Aperture as a new version JPEG?
(Though this question is approached in this forum, a solution to my question is never found as each dicussion ends up going off-topic from the original question)

Any further ideas from anyone who's experienced trying to open a JPEG from Aperture in Photoshop as a JPEG?
Like I said before, you cannot open a jpeg as a jpeg, the file must be decompressed to open in PS or in Aperture, and that has always been the case.
I do not know how it used to work, but I tested and you are correct that with PS 12.1 and with Aperture 3.2.2 a JPEG sent to open in external editor (PS) is opened into your choice of lossless format and then goes back to Aperture in the lossless format you chose.
IMO this is the way it should be, because every save into JPEG loses image data, so such saves should be limited to the final export, in this case when the image actually leaves Aperture. If the file was compressed as a JPEG  when leaving PS, decompressed and edited in Aperture, then compressed again to export as JPEG from Aperture, unnecessary additional image data loss would occur.
It is always better to save the application of lossy compression until the very last step in a workflow because other usages (printing, for instance) may occur before applying the lossy compression.

• How to make photoshop default opening images

I have Bridge CC when I double click to open a image in photoshop it opens in windows photo viewer intsted,.and photopshop is not in the File / open with /

Hi;
Id, Ai, and Ps file types are associated correctly in Bridge CC and work fine, however, JPGs don't. When I click on the file thumbnail I get the following:
I no longer have Ps C5; all my apps are now CC.
I'd like to associate JPGs in Bridge CC to default to Windows Photo Viewer (that seems to work just fine, otherwise), but I cannot manually re-asscociate the JPG file types in Bridge CC because when selecting to choose the program in "Browse" (to set it to Windows Photo Viewer) the WPV folder is empty—go figure!! I don't get it.
Anyone have any ideas how to correct this?
Thanks.

• How to make tiny squares not appear when printing?

I have Adobe Pro X and I am having issues with printing. When I print a pdf document, sometimes the text is replaced by squares.  I have determined that this is caused by certain font.  I know for a fact that the pre set font used in "add text box" is one of those fonts.  I have read that you can embed fonts and that will solve the problem of the squares.
This image is of a sample of the issue. I have to take product documentation for manufacturers and provide these to clients for approval.  So, this issue is not directed at just one manufacturer provided pdf. The squares also appear in the text box at the top.
Questions:
1.  How do you change the pre set font in the "add text box"?
2.  How do you determine the font of a pdf document?
3.  What is the step by step process to embedd a particular font?

When you use the "Add text box" (also known as the Typewriter tool), you're actually placing an  annotation on the PDF. You can see this if you open the Comments pane and view the Comments List. You can change the font for the annotation by using the Selection tool and then double-clicking on the text. This will bring up the Typewriter tool properties where you can see what font is being used and change it if necessary. In your case, you don't need to embed the font because you're working within an annotation. What you'll need to do instead is to flatten the annotation so that it becomes part of the page content and no longer editable as an annotation. To flatten an annotation you can use the Preflight tool (which is only part of Acrobat Pro. When you open the Preflight tool, twirl open the PDF fixups arrow and select "Flatten annotation and form fields".

• How to make photoshop file recovery?

Today Accidentally my photoshop has closed at that time I am working on my demo template work from last 2 months, so again I open my .psd file error prompt “could not complete your request because the file is not compatible with this version of photoshop”.
Several times I tried but it can’t open my .psd file. If anyone faces this type problem or has any solution to solve this I will be very thankful to you, of course its my two months hard work.

You could try this: http://www.photoshop.recoverytoolbox.com/... Recovery Toolbox for Photoshop I haven't tried myself, yet, but you could give the free trial a spin and see what happens. I'd be curious to see the before and after if you do.
or
If you are using time machine it does a backup every couple hours, so you can get previous versions that way.
As a habit I save my file with a different name every couple hours, just in case a file gets corrupted.

• How to make photoshop back to its original color

I found the problem to color in photoshop , I need help from the masters photoshop for more details please see the following picture
- when blank mode everything looks normal
- but when creating a new layer that problem begins
this time I really need help,
Thank you for the help
I am still a newbie

Layer Masks are "alpha" channels that determine the visibility of Layers.
They are one channel (grayscale) and one can paint on them only with degrees of gray.
When you select the Layer itself by clicking the Layer’s icon in the Layers Panel (or hitting cmd-2) the Foreground and Background Colors should be displayed in full color again.

• How to make photoshop go faster, faster!?

Right now I'm using a Mac G5 dual 1.8hz PowerPC with 2GB RAM, PS 7.0. My typical files are 400 - 500mb and can have as many as 500-600 layers. Pixel dimension is 5400 x 3150 pixels and after opening my lower left shows 64.9m/1.42 G. It takes a long time to open one of these files- about 3-4 minutes and even longer to save, about 4-5 minutes. Also while the file is open zooming and panning can be choppy and slow, with the monitor lagging behind with the refresh. I can even hear the hard drive going when zooming sometimes. Question is how can I speed up the opening, zooming, saving? I have on order a new Mac Pro 2.93 quad core with 16gb RAM, PS CS4. What else should I put into this to speed everything up? Thanks!

this is very helpful thank you.
I'm putting in the maximum ram possible for this machine- 16GB. I don't know how to improve that.
I see it is also important to have a dedicated scratch disc, with nothing else on it. Adobe even recommends using a RAID array for this, so you are really talking about at least 2 drives just for the scratch disc. I was wondering if you could use an SSD for the scratch disc, like an Intel X25-M 80GB? These drives have very fast read speeds, although the write speed is not as good.

• How to make photoshop paths visible in Illustrator

I work with images from various manufacturers of construction equipment and need to be able to put a stroke around the images at times. I have images from one manufacturer that are eps files with paths and they work fine but I have another manufacturer who supplies the images as tif files with paths and they do not appear in illustrator. Is there some trick to importing the images so that the paths are usable. Do I need to ask this question in the Photoshop forum instead?

>...eps files with paths
>...tif files with paths
I assume you are referring to clipping paths, which are created in Photoshop and saved with EPS and TIFF files.
Unfortunately, Illustrator does not recognize clipping paths in TIFF files. Page layout (DTP) applications, such as InDesign and QuarkXpress, do recognize TIFF (as well as EPS) file clipping paths, but, alas, not Illustrator.
If you receive TIFFs with embedded clipping paths, just open them in Photoshop and resave as EPS -- or, better yet, create the desired background transparency in Photoshop and save as PSD for placing into Illustrator.
If you need to do things to the clipping path itself, such as stroking, you can do it in Photoshop or use Export | Paths to Illustrator. Note that the latter creates an .ai file containing only the path, nothing else. But you can combine that path with the original image within Illustrator, creating, if necessary, your own clipping mask.
If you don't have Photoshop, have your supplier save as EPS (or TIFF or PSD)
and export the paths. That will give you the greatest flexibility within Illustrator.

• How to make photoshop run smoother on a macbook pro?

      L3 Cache: 3 MB

For some odd reason, Photoshop isn't running smoothly on my mac despite going beyond the minimum requirements.

The problem was, I had moved the Aperture 1.0 application into a new folder (it is placed by default at the top level of the APplications folder), and it seems that the 1.5.2 update installer doesn't recognize it in other locations.
So, when I moved it backt out of the new folder into the Application folder again, everything worked just fine.

• How to draw a perfect circle and how to make sure it is perfectly centered inside a square

How to draw a perfect circle and how to make sure it is perfectly centered inside a square in Photoshop elements using the Ellipse option.

1. Create a square canvas.
2. With the Elipse tool, hold down Shift (Shift forces a circle). Draw the circle anywhere on the canvas (Shape 1 in this example).
3. Simplify the circle layer
4. Ctrl-click the layer to select the circle.
5. Copy the selection to the clipboard (Edit > Copy).
6. Deselect the selection.
7. Paste from the clipboard (Edit > Paste). The pasted circle (Layer 1) will be centered.
8. Delete the original circle layer.
NOTE: Step 6 is the key. This guarantees that the pasted circle will be centered.
If you want a circle completely within a square you can simply draw and simplify a circle on any shape canvas. Ctlrl-click the circle to to select it and copy to the clipboard.
Then do File > New from Clipboard. This creates the circle cropped to a square on transparent background.

• How to make an icon image using Photoshop

I found out how to do this recently so I decided that I wanted to make a tut for those who don't know how to make an icon image. This icon image is for the libraries tab on your computer. Under the libararies tab there is Music, Pictures, Documents, and Photos
First you will need the ICO (Icon image format) Format extension for photoshop which can be downloaded here:
http://www.telegraphics.com.au/svn/icoformat/trunk/dist/README.html
The download link and tutorial on how to install it is all in the link above.
Once you have that all set you can now launch photoshop to create your icon image. Once you have launched it, create a new document with the size as in the image below.

Create the image you want. I used a simple one by using the custom shape tool by pressing "U" on your keyboard and with the
basic blending options.

The reason why the image is pixelated is because it is an icon image. Since the image is only 256x256 pixels when you zoom in on it that will get you the pixely result. The reason why I zoomed  in is so you can see it. But don't worry this is no the end result. Just continue reading and you will see.
So once you have created the icon go ahead and press
file>save as>(under format choose the ICO)>and choose the name that you want to name it. And save it in your C: drive. You will see why to save it in your C: drive in a sec.

So now that you have created the icon and saved it now you can create the new library.

Name the library whatever you want I named it "Sample" for tutorial purposes. Notice how it gives you a default boring icon image for your library.

So now once you have created and named your library now it is time to get the icon image into place.
Go to computer/c: Drive/users/YOU/ And now once you have reached this area you will need to access a hidden folder named "appdata" to do so press "Alt" then a menu bar will show. Click
tools>folder options>and view. Find the option to view hidden folders then press apply then ok. Now we shall continue so AppData>Roaming>Microsoft>Windows>Libraries
Now you should see all the libraries including the one you just created.

Once you have reached your destination then open a new text document with notepad and drag the library you just created in notepad. The result should look like this:

once you have reached this point click at the end of the second to last line down then press enter and enter in this information
<iconReference>c:\"NAME OF ICO FILE YOU CREATED IN PS".ico</iconReference>
Example:

Once you have entered that information go to file>save and the icon image should appear on the library you created.

Now you are officially finished. Go and spread the news and joy. Bye for now
-Dusty951512

It is Windows only because all those screen shots are exclusively Windows, the file structure and paths do not resemble those of the Mac in the least.  As a Mac user, there's nothing I could take from your tutorial.  Sorry,
No drives named with letters like C: on the Mac, for instance.  No backward slashes either, ever.  No such paths either.  No "Notepad" on the Mac, we use TextEdit; but such a text editor is not remotely needed on the Mac to make and/or edit icons.  Etc.
Those folders are not even called "Libraries" on the Mac…  Nothing resembling your tutorial at all.
The icons in the Finder's Sidebar are not customizable at all in recent version of OS X.
