How to make Preview the default reader for pdf files online?

Hi everyone,
Many product manufacturers put their product's broucher in pdf form online.  I've tried the screen shot capture method for saved pdf files but when the file won't even open online, how do I get to even capture a screen shot in the first place?  Is the problem in Safari 6?  Many thanks in advance.

Hi Anthony,
So, you're instincts were correct - it is Safari.....
I use Firefox as my browser (I'm not a big fan of Safari or on Windows, of Explorer). When I clicked on your brochure in Firefox, it comes up with a little window asking me what I want to do with the file - and with the "Open With" Preview" button checked.
When I do the same with Safari, it opens a new Safari window, displaying it online, but not downloading it.
So, don't know if you want to download Firefox, but did want to let you know that's why it was working differently for me!
Good luck with this - hope you are able to get it to work out for you!
Cheers,
GB

  • Make Acrobat the default reader for pdf-files.

Since some time (probably after I installed Mavericks) pdf-files are by default opened
in Preview. To open them in Adobe Acrobat, I can right-click the pdf-file, choose Acrobat,
and indicate that Acrobat should be the default reader for pdf-files.
This works, and after logout and login, it does still work.
But after a reboot, Preview is again the default reader.
Also, if in Finder I right-click a pdf-file, and via Get Info I configure Acrobat
to be the default reader for the specific file and all other pdf-files (by clicking
Change All), this only works for the current session. After a reboot Preview again is the
    default.
How can I make Acrobat Reader the default reader for pdf-files, and make this setting
    permanent?
    Where is this setting saved?
    Regards,
    Kees.

I finally solved this, but I still don't understand how.
To begin with I have 2 hard-drives in my iMac. The OS is on the primary HD, and data are on the secondary drive. My Home directory too is on this secondary HD.
To check whether the location of the Home directory might be the problem, I copied the Home directory to the primary HD, changed the path in my profile, and did a reboot.
The next step was to configure Adobe Acrobat as the default reader for pdf-files. To my surprise,  after rebooting, Acrobat still was the default reader for pdf-files.
So it looks as if this problem has something to do with the location of the Home directory.
The original Home directory was still present on the secondary  HD,  So the next step was to change in my profile the path to the Home directory again (pointing again to the original Home directory on the second HD), do a reboot and delete the copy of the Home directory on the primary HD.
So now the situation was back to as it was before: the Home directory on the second HD.
To my surprise now Acrobat still was the default reader for pdf-files.
And I could also change the default reader to Preview, and back to Acrobat, and this setting was saved across reboots.
I'm curious to what solved this problem, and where the setting of the default pdf-reader, or more general, the default application for file types, is stored.
So I hope that someone who reads this, can shed some light on this.

  • Making Preview the Default App for .pdf Files

When I click on a .pdf file (such as one attached to an e-mail) it now opens in Acrobat Reader; it formerly opened in Preview (which I preferred). I don't recall making any changes and wondered if the "Preview as default" was changed in the recent OSX update. Can I set a preference somewhere to again have .pdf docs opened in Preview?

    Hello,
To open a document with a specific application:
In the Finder, select the document and choose File > Get Info.
In the Info window, click to show the "Open with" pane.
Choose the application you want to use from the pop-up menu.
If you want ALL documents that have the same file type as this one to open with the same application, click Change All.

  • Vista - how do you make iTunes the default player for audio files?

Having started using iTunes on a new Vista PC, I've found that it defaults back to Windows Media as the default audio file player every time the machine is rebooted.
But worse than that, I cannot find any option to make iTunes the default player for MP3 files - under the Vista settings, the ONLY option offered is Windows Media: there is not even a box to tick for iTunes.
Have others found this? Is there any way around this?
(I thought that Microsoft was legally precluded from making these kind of enforced settings now???)

Although I now seem to have successfully made iTunes the default player for audio files, iTunes has started putting up this message:
"The iTunes Music Library file cannot be saved. You do not have enough access privileges for this operation."
A quick scan of the forum shows this problem has come up quite a few times, but I'm far from clear if there is a definitive answer/solution. I am the administrator for the computer. It sounds worrying that the Library file is not being saved - should I be worried?

  • Make Preview the Default Reader

I use the Finder to access an ensemble of research documents having different formats - many are pdf's. For reasons of speed and ease of use, I much favor Preview over the Adobe Reader. Unfortunately, whenever I click a pdf file in the Finder, the file is read by the Adobe Reader.
My question: How do I go about making Preview my default reader when I access a document via the Finder?
    Thanks for your help.

select a pdf file in finder and enter command+i. in the resulting popup window go to "open with section". select "Preview" to open it and click on "change all".

  • How to make Firefox the default browser for Hotmail

I recently uninstalled Safari because I want to use Firefox as my default browser. Previously when I click the Mail button in Windows Live Messenger, the mac would automatically open my hotmail in Safari. Now that I have uninstalled it, when I click on the Mail button, it opens up with TextEdit. How do I make it open with Firefox?
    Any help is much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Joe

OK I'll post there also but I'm aware of the preferences section in Safari... thing is, when I choose to make Firefox the default browser, it resets back to Safari when I turn off the computer and turn it back on. Everytime. And it does my head in
I heard of a program called More Internet that I heard could help slove the problem but I can't understand how to use it, nor is there any forum or any way to contact anyone who knows. It's driving me up the wall.
So I'm hoping there's another way that someone in the world knows.

  • How to make Preview the default pdf viewer?

I made the mistake of using Adobe Acrobat pdf reader for opening pdf's. Then I learned it was better to use Preview. So I deleted Acrobat. I then I couldn't open any pdf's in Safari. None. So I opened a pdf in a folder. Went get info. Selected Preview as reader. Clicked "Change All." But it still doesn't work. When I try to open a pdf from  Safari page, I just get a blank gray page.
How can I get this back to the way it should be with Preview doing all the pdf work and NO Adobe??
    Thanks in advance!

    Back up all data.
Quit Safari. In the Finder, select Go ▹ Go to Folder from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Copy the line of text below into the box that opens, and press return:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then launch Safari and test.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

  • How do I change the default location for mail files?

I want to move my mail folders from /Library/Mail and /Library/Mail Downloads folders to a different drive. How can I do this? I know how to move them - I want to know how I make mail aware of where I have put them). I have an encrypted SSD I want to use.
I know I can encrypt the main drive but I don't want to do this.

Changing the default downloads folder is helpful. Solves part of the problem. I have PGP installed and it decrypts the emails as they come in and place them in my inbox as unencrypted so the emails themselves need to remain encrypted on the disk. I tried using alias's but couldn't get it to work.
I would just encrypt the whole disk but I am worried that I get other problems. I have had 8 Macbook Pro laptops in about 6 years and in that time only one has lasted 12 months plus without a replacement or repair. I don't think much of apples reliability or support for that matter, so rely heavily on disk clones to make sure I can keep working. The hardware is so rubbish I now keep a spare macbook for when my main one needs repaired. In fact I am running off my cloned disk just now because my brand new MBP 17" is in for repair for the 3rd time in 5 months. If the software wasn't so good I would swap back to that other operating system.

  • How do I set the default screen a pdf file opens on?

I have a laptop on a docking station, and by default the pdf file would open on my external monitor.  For some reason, it now opens on my laptop screen by default.  How can I change this?  I am using Reader X.  Thanks!

I would say one changes that in a control panel, not in Reader.

  • How to make Preview the default pdf viewer in Safari

    Quit Safari.
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
    Type of copy / paste:   /Library/Internet Plug-Ins

    Relaunch Safari to test.

  • How can I change the default application for a content type?

Running a version of Linux, the default application for PDF files is "Use Document Viewer (default)", which appears to be /usr/bin/evince. I'd much prefer to use /usr/bin/okular; how can I change the default. This question is NOT about how to change the function that is automatically applied when I access a link, in this case "Preview in Firefox", but rather to the default application that I can select when I download a file being viewed in Firefox's previewer.

This is real progress, a solution to the problem as posted. The command:
    xdg-mime default okularApplication_pdf.desktop application/pdf
    makes okular the default.
However when I added okular to the choices for applications in:
    * Edit>Preferences>Applications>PDF
the popup box that appears when I click Download on the preview page changed. The pulldown menu that appears next to "Open with" used to have 3 entries:
    # Document Viewer (default)
    # Acroread
    # Other
    Now it has only 2:
    # Okular (Default)
    # Other
    I'd like it to read
    # Okular (Default)
    # Acroread
    # Other
How can I control the entries in this pulldown list?
Also, how can I make the default choice in the popup box be
    * Open With <whatever> , rather than
    * Save File ?
