How to make stationary video of performance more interesting...

Hi,
I need some advice from experienced FCPX users.
I was given about an hour of video of a performance involving a group of people singing with some dancing/movement. I am adding captions of the lyrics being sung because the audio captured a bit of room echo that made some of the words being sung less distinct. The video was shot on an unattended camera in a balcony overlooking the venue. So, I have sharp (HD) video of the performance, and the lighting is actually good. But the footage itself is a bit boring because the camera angle never changes, and the vantage point is distant enough that the action on stage only fills part of the frame, and there's a lot of extraneous space on all sides.
I tried using cropping in FCPX to zoom in on the action, which certainly gives me a tighter, more interesting view, at the expense of pixellation/blurriness.
I am still kind of a FCPX newbie and I'm wondering if I might do something with any of the other effects to make this footage more intersesting, calling attention to the action without degrading image quality.
Thanks in advance!

I'm doing this with some of my projetcs too: a 'general' cam, overviewing the scenery, but unattended.
Knowing this, I record in 1080; but I set up my project in 720 - which means, I can zoom-in by factor 3-4 without (almost) any loss! So, blurriness occur only when the cropping factor gets really high... under low light conditions, beyond 200% scale is not acceptable.
This way, I can perform cuts to 'two' angles from one cam: clip#1 shows a part of the stage on the left, clip#2 shows the right part; or, I do add a 'pan with grace' via Ken Burns.
What's really helpful in such situations is a 2nd ''free' cam - there you get close-ups, diff. perspectives, and 'neutrals' for cut-aways (faces, hands, feet, deco, lights). Knowing, this will be a single-stunt, I like to record before and after the show such stuff… Or, ask another person to take stills; any cheap photo/phone can take pics which 'fit' by terms of quality into any video. On a wedding I once had an 11y old assistent, who took (partly) surprising good photos! ...
May be, some other persons of the audience took stills, you can ask for? ...
Finally. why not faking it? Do you have material from any audition of the same show? Do you have a chance to record a 2nd performance, diff. place, diff. time? Just to get some 'intercuts'.....
Sadly forgotton film-theorist Лев Влади́мирович Кулешо́в 'invented' the socalled Kuleshov-effect: The audience does the 'montage' of a scenery in its head - two pics, totally unrelated, result in 'one'. Example extremé: you can do cut-aways to ANY audience-shot avail! Funny action+laughing people=one movie ... although the laughing people never saw the performance, nor shared the same room! (usual for audio: sit-com laughter from tape)
just as some suggestions....

Can anyone tell me how to make a video clip in color transition like the opening of "Oh Brother where art though" ?
You know the scene at the start where it starts off Black and White then as we move down the timeline it transitions to a rusty brown gradually.
It's on the Apple site for FC Studio as a promo clip.

how to do a keyframe trasition in the Color FX room
I realize that you can "add" keyframes to the timeline in COLORFX, but I don't believe they are always observed, and then they usually disappear in retrieved projects, and aren't persistent if you leave the room. To remember where they are... you might mark in a keyframe on those frames in another room as a pathfinder. The behaviour is consistent with a creature of the six-legged variety.
Method 1. If you are trying to taper the effect (any effect) in COLOR FX, the most linear approach is to render two versions of the clip; one "with", one "without" and do an opacity fade once you have returned them to Final Cut. This gives you the most control, flexibility, repeatability and consistency.
Method 2. You may attempt to keyframe the bleach bypass settings within the node itself -- the preset that comes with COLOR doesn't have any controls, but the Nattress plugin does.
Method 3. Set up a "blend" node with your bleach bypass feeding one of the inputs and leave the second input to default to the untreated video... keyframe a transition from "1.00000" to "0.00000" and that should work.
Note: the keyframe timeline markers will disappear from the timeline if you exit the clip, but the effect is likely to persist. At least that was what was happening a couple of minutes ago... for me, the effect and blend performed the transition just like it was previewing when rendered. This strategy is subject to being created and rendered "on the spot right now", and I advise making sure you have your renderqueue settings ready to go... load the clip from the COLORFX room using the Mac command bar at the top of the screen and render it right away. Don't try to save it for later. Just Do It.
An announcement went around about two weeks ago that Mr. Deakins' website was back up and running, so give him another try... poor guy has been swamped probably doing Dreamweaver maintenance... yeah, that must be it...

    Thanks

    Thanks Karsten,
Can I know, if I have about 60 cuts on the timeline and I want all the 60 cuts to be greenish, how do I apply to all at one go (instead of having to do one by one for 60 times !) ?

Hello guys! Do you know how to make a video smaller on imovie? Not by size or trim, i mean simply show the video as small as possible in the middle of the screen! Please text back.

Go to the Map, Background & Animatic Browser (last button in the centre tool bar alongside the Transition button). Drag the Black background (or any background) to your project. From an Event, drag the video selection directly onto the Black clip in the project. As you drop the video clip, a pop-up menu will appear. Select Picture in Picture.
Your video will appear as a small picture within the black clip. Click on it and reposition it to the centre of the viewer, using the yellow guide lines to get the exact centre position. Resize the Picture in Picture if desired by dragging the corner handles.
NOTE: You may need to extend the duration of the Black clip to match the duration of the video clip. Double-click on the Black clip to open the Inspector, then adjust the duration there.

  • How to make a video in Labview that sync with scenario data?

    Hi guys,
I am doing a program that shows the scenario data of a satellite at different positions. (For eg, at the position nearer to sun, the temperature data is higher.....)
To make the front panel more interesting, I am thinking to add in a video of a satellite orbiting the Earth. The video has to sync with the data I am showing.
The orbital time of my satellite is 90 minutes = 5400 seconds. If I am going to use the picture ring control method, I have to import 5820 frames of pictures into the picture ring control. My understanding is that each time the user can only import one image (correct me if I am wrong). That would mean I have to import the pictures for 5400 times.
Is there any other way to do this? I do not want to waste my time on importing so many images.
    Vanessa
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Okay there are many ways to do this, and I'm not certain which would be less work.
One option would be to have a picture ring, with 5820 individual images that you then pick which one to display as an index.  If you were to do this I'd recommend some LabVIEW scripting to create the control, importing the images programatically.  I think memory wise storing these images in this control would be very difficult for LabVIEW, but it could be done.
What I think would be a better option, is to use a single 2D Picture control, and then load a new image from disk (where I hope these images are stored).  You then just load the right image for the right time.  Look under the Graphics and Sound >> Graphics Format to see how to open a file from disk.  This path will change for each image.
EDIT:  Here is an old link that is still relavent http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/328AF568F15B36328625696200511EF0
DOUBLE EDIT:  Really?  Scripting doesn't allow importing pictures?  Well there is likely a work around but that sucks go vote for it here.

  • How to make a video for YouTube

Does anyone know how to make a short video on a Macbook, to put on YouTube?

For direct recording into YouTube or other Flash based video web sites, use Flash Settings to select between available microphones and cameras.
If you uneed help, see Adobe's microphone suppport info at http://tinyurl.com/3e5cnl  Adobe Help for selecting your webcam is here: http://tinyurl.com/4pswu9
Only external (Firewire) iSight (out of production for several years) has a built-in microphone.  If your Mac has a built-in iSight, it also has a separate, built-in, USB Mic.
Either kind of microphone can be selected in your  > System Preferences > Sound > Input settings.
If you want to use an external iSight with a Mac that also has a USB mic for some purpose other than recording directly into YouTube or another Flash based web site, you can usually select which mic to use depending on your desired purpose.
Many apps that can recognize multiple microphones allow you to select which micriphone either via a menu choice or the app's speparate Preferences... settings.  As one example, here is how to select a mic in QuickTimeX:
Each app works its own way, and some apps can only access the curreent System Preference setting.
A side note for other readers who are using Mac OS X Lion 10.7.x:  Neither FaceTime Version 1.1 (258) from OS X 10.7.1 nor the current Version 1.1.1 (262) from OS X 10.7.2 can use external iSight's Firewire mic.   The firewire camera works, but the Fireiwire mic is not available for selection in FaceTime > Video.

  • How to make HD video smaller! HELP!

OK...so I bought an HD camera and the quality is SICK!Almost a bit too sick...After I am done editing and I export using quicktime conversion to .MOV the video is HUMONGOUS!
When I say humongous I do not necessarily mean the size of the file...I'm actually talking about the dimensions of the video.
SO, how do I make the video smaller from FCE?...I mean the actual video's original size smaller (not how to zoom out on quicktime, that is obvious) I mean how to have the video size smaller.
    Thanks.
    -John

There are way, way too many variables to answer that question. It's meaningless without knowing what your video is, action, dialog, animation, music, speech, one minute, one hour, and without knowing you're trying to do. People have written whole books on the subject of compression. You might try a google search for video compression. Look for what you're trying to compress for, where you're trying to get to.

  • How to make a video stop in flash through an external button

    Hi everyone!
I have a little problem: I made a flash site with its
different sections, the first of which has a movie clip which is a
"VideoPlaylist". So inside this movie clip I have the player and
the videos sequenced one after the other in a TileList component.
    The problem is:
When I go to a different page, the video in the first page
continues to play and so you can still hear the sound, AND WHICH IS
WORSE, when you click the button to return to the first page, the
video starts again with the sound of the previous time still
    rolling.
The solution would be, I suppose, when clicking to any of the
buttons that link to another section of the flash document, add
some action script to make the video stop (having in mind that the
video player is inside a movie clip).
I don't know action script, just the navigation basics
necessary for the sections. I did the videoplaylist following this
    tutorial:
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flash/articles/video_playlist.html
    Can anyone help me, please!!

You better ask in the Flash forum; this is the Flash Player forum.

Should I make a video with the jpgs and tell them that they need to use the looping application of their web site?
