How to make the CD/DVD drive compatible on Satellite 5000-204

Hi all,
I see a thread on replacing CD/DVD drive on this notebook, but it was closed, so i write this post.
The most of recent unit is "cable select" type and will not be recognized from many Toshiba notebook.
To solve that you must search a drive for which you can found a firmware update that change it to be "reverse cable select" type, as Nec or Optiarc
If you buy a drive that can't be recognize (like me) read below.
I succesfully replaced the DVD-ROM/CD-RW unit with a Pioneer DVR-KD08 DVD writer.
This unit is a "cable select" type (as most other recent unit) so it can't be recognise by this notebook (and many other Toshiba models). The solution is to connect pin 45 and 47 together on the drive or on the connector adapter (this second solution is simpler).
If you watch the drive from behind these pins are the second and third from the left on the upper row of pin of the connector.
In the connector adapter it's simpler to connect these pin (with care) with a solder iron directly on the circuit board.
Obviously on the circuit board the pins are the second and third from the right.
After this the unit will recognize ok.

Hi buddy
First of all thank you for participation in the forum its always nice to have users who shares the own experience and knowledge.
Thanks you also for this info how to make the CD/DVD drive compatible.
But to be honest Im a little bit skeptical because there is a chance that the drive could be damage during this procedure.
So everyone could do this but only at the own risk!!!
Usually the compatible drives can be found in the user manual and it would be useful taking a look into the user manual before buying an NOT compatible drive ;)
Cheers mate

    Hi,
I need to change the DVDRW unit in my Satellite Pro P200, but I'dont know extract the old unit.
    Anybody help me??
    Thanks.
(Sorry for my english :S ).

To remove the optical drive module, you need to remove the battery and secondary HDD cover first.
In the middle of the bottom cover you would find an black screw which secures the CD/DVD drive.
This screw has to be removed.
In the secondary HDD bay you will find an bracket.
Use your hand to push the module bracket and then slide the module from the bay.
    Thats all!
But once again; be careful and if you have no experience, get in contact with an notebook technician!

  • Satellite Pro A120: How to remove the CD/DVD drive

I have 2 main problems and can't seems to fully open case.
Does anyone know how to remove the dvd-rom?
But my mainproblem is the power swith ribbon (blue) has come loose from the motherboard. But as i can't fully open the case im using tweezers to try to recconect it.
Doesn't seem to want to go in.
Is there a clip on the motherboard connector or is it just push in? A photo or diagram would be useful.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    thanks

One question; why do you do this?
I mean why your want to open the notebook?
Fact is that the Pro A120 Satellite is not a old notebook and I presume the warranty is valid.
If you remove the notebook covers you will lose the warranty!!!
The CD/DVD removing is very easy.
Usually it is secured with one screw which can be found at the bottom of the unit. You have to remove it firstly and then it should be able to take off the ODD.

  • Broken DVD Drive on my Satellite M35x laptop

    Hi,
the CD-DVD Drive on my Satellite Laptop apparently is broken and I was thinking about purchasing an external CD-DVD Drive and would appreciate HELP.
In the event that I need to RE-Install Windows, would I be able to do this with an External CD Drive since I believe I need to boot from the CD to begin the reinstall and I am not sure if the Laptop will "recognize" the external drive?
    Thank you,
    Bob

Hi Barrie, I purchased a (used) Drive for a M35X Laptop and to a non techie, it looked just like the one that was inside the Laptop but when I slide the replacement DVD-CD Drive in the opening, it did NOT "click-in" (connect to the MB) and wehn i turned the Laptop on and ent to My Computer, their was NO DVD-CD identified.
I tried install new HW but again, the Drive was not recognized so my deductions are that the Drive may look just like the other one but it is not meant for this system, the drive could be OK but the connection to the MB is defected, their is something not functioning properly on the MB or most likely, I don't know what I am talking about and need ALL the H-E-L-P that I can get!
    Thanks,
    Bob

  • HT203909 Why can't you provide specific instructions here about how to make the USB drive bootable?  The article referenced is not dedicated to Bootcamp--too long, too many options.  How do you make it bootable?

Why can't you provide specific instructions here in HT203909 (Boot Camp: Creating an ISO image from a Windows installation DVD) about how to make the USB drive bootable?  The article referenced for partitioning the drive is not dedicated to Bootcamp--too long, too many options.  How do you make it bootable?

If your BC Assistant shows the option to create a USB Installer, it automatically is marked as bootable. There is no need to have manual intervention to make a bootable USB. Once the process is manually modified, it is supported by the person modifying it.
You have two or three options (depending on your Mac Model).
    1. Create USB... - Use a USB2 flash drive, which is erased and formatted. If your Mac supports ISOs then BCA will prompt for the Media. Any Mac which does not have a built-in Optical drive will support an ISO. There are specific Mac models which support both, DVD and USB based installation.
    2. Download Software from Apple servers...
    3. Install Windows...
Are any additional instructions really necessary?

  • How to change the power supply to the CD/DVD Drive so that it is off by default?

When running on battery I often use the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon from XP to "unplug" the Mat****a CD/DVD drive in order to safe some battery life.(Does it?) I use Fn+Tab to bring it back to life. I wonder if there is a way to make my Notebook (M400) boot with the power supply to the Drive off by default. By the way, any idea where I can find the extra battery for the CD/DVD-Drive slot and at which price?
Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hello Robert
If you check start page you will see that this support forum is not any kind of Toshiba support directly but user-to-user forum. But you are not alone and many users expect that some Toshiba support team sit in the office and wait to write answers.
Anyway there are many Toshiba notebook users with very good knowledge and also enthusiasts who try to help other guys with different issues and also share own experience.
Professionalism is not forum but action when you need assistance because of hardware damage or something similar. If you need competent answers and help every authorized service partner should be able to give you info you need. But please dont mix service partner and Toshiba because it is not the same.
Anyway I have found info that you can use additional (second expansion battery) and it should be batteries with part numbers PA3510U-1BAL and PA3510U-1BRL. I can not tell you how much it costs but you can find it alone using Google.
Back to your first question: If I am understand you right you want to save more power and because of that you want to disconnect ODD. It is nice idea but you have obviously misunderstood something. "Safely Remove Hardware option is there to help operating system and say this hardware part will be removed and dont exist anymore but it does not mean physically disconnection from other hardware.
If you need more power use second battery and enjoy your life.
If you have more questions you are welcome. Many users here have M400 and I hope in the future some of them will participate a little bit more.
    Have a nice day! :)

  • How can I make the second internal drive bootable drive bootable for trouble shooting?

I suspect that a newly installed SSD boot drive may be causing instability in my new 2012 Mac Mini Server. The logic board and RAM have been replaced and boot drive wiped and partitioned and 10.10.2 reinstalled. I'd like to make the second drive bootable in order to take the SSD boot drive out of the equation.
Could some please describe the correct method for making the second internal drive bootable.
    Thanks.

A quick addendum: your Mac will have a default boot drive set, and if not then it will choose the first one it identifies on the disk (usually the first partition on the first disk, followed by subsequent partitions on this disk, and then moving to the second identified disk, etc.). As a result, if you have to hold Option to select your second boot drive, the next time you restart, your Mac will boot back to the first drive. To make the second boot drive the default one, you will need to select it in the Startup Disk system preferences. This will update the hardware to use this as the default boot drive.

  • How can i reinstall cd/dvd drive - Satellite P100 PSPAD

    Hi
I have Satellite P100 (PSPAD), and my cd/dvd drive (I dont know how or when) suddenly disappeard, it does not appear in my computer or device manager,
I tried this but coul not find the lowerfilters so i delite the upperfilter and restart the computer but that did not work.
So can I reinstall it somehow and how do i do it?
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Caution There can be many instances of the registry subkey that is mentioned in step 2.
You must make sure that you are in the appropriate registry subkey before modifying the UpperFilters and the LowerFilters values.
To verify that you are in the appropriate registry subkey, make sure that the Default data value is DVD/CD-ROM and the Class data value is CDROM.
    3. In the right pane, right-click UpperFilters, and then click Delete.
    4. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the UpperFilters registry entry.
    5. In the right pane, right-click LowerFilters, and then click Delete.
    6. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the LowerFilters registry entry.
    7. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

    Hi guys
    Just one question;
Are you able to boot from the bootable disk like Toshiba recovery disk, Windows XP CD, Vista DVD or Linux live CD???
If yes, then you should try to reinstall the OS.
If not then this would mean that the CD/DVD drive malfunctions.
    *@BlackJack_1*
You said the CD/DVD drive has been recognized by BIOS.
Do you see the whole CD/DVD drive title/name or you can see just the CD/DVD drive option.
You should also test if you can boot from one of the mentioned disk and to ensure that this is not a hardware issue!

    Hi again Hal
Link to your other thread > The slot loading CD/DVD drive in my...: Apple Support Communities
You have also tried resetting the PRAM as I suggestion in your other thread...?
See resetting the PRAM > About NVRAM and PRAM
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    3. Turn on the computer.
    4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    6. Release the keys.

  • In firefox 4 RC, some addons installed suddenly disappear, but checking the profile, some of the missing addons related files are still here, how to make the addons back?

I use firefox 4 form beta 9 to RC (zh) now and there are also firefox 3.6 installed in computer. One day when I open Fx 4 RC, some (actually a lot but not all) of the adoons just disappear. When I check on about:addons page, some addons installed do not appear in the list.
    The addons '''REMAINED''' including:
    * addons I already used in Fx 3.6 (like webmail notifie , xmarks)
    * ''addons only can use in Fx 4'' (like Open Web Apps for Firefox).
    The addons '''DISAPPEARED''' including:
    * addons I already used in Fx 3.6 (like yoono)
    * '' addons installed when using Fx 4'' (like updatescanner, Thumbnail Zoom).
But when I check the profile(by Help > Troubleshooting Information>Open Containing Folder) , some (not sure is it all) of the missing addons related files are still here [lucky], so any one know how to make the missing addons back?
    Some more details:
    * This happened when i use RC for already a few days and keep on even i restart Fx and windows.
    * The bookmarks, history, search engine and even themes and icon setting are still here. [ I only sync bookmarks but not history for both xmarks and firefox sync.]
    * This addons are really '''disappeared''' but not disable only!
    * This number of addons missed, as i remember, at least 30, should be more than that number bacause some of them are installed but in disable mode.
    * I try to install back one of the addons - Stylish, the installed code are still here.
    * It is nearly an impossible mission to install every missing addons again, as it really kill my time.

Delete the files extensions.* (extensions.rdf, extensions.cache, extensions.ini, extensions.sqlite) and compatibility.ini in the Firefox [[Profiles|profile folder]] to reset the extensions registry. New files will be created when required.
    See "Corrupt extension files": http://kb.mozillazine.org/Unable_to_install_themes_or_extensions
If you see disabled, not compatible, extensions in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions" then click the Tools button at the left side of the Search Bar to do a compatibility check.

  • System recovery on Sattelite M70-204 PSM71E. The CD/DVD drive does not work

    Hello!
Can you please give me some help and advice on the way to resolve the following issues:
I have had over the last three months minor problems with Windows Installer: software updates could not always be performed successfully, an error message was issued by Windows Installer regarding Quick Time when I started the computer. Apart from it, the computer was runing correctly. I had plan to restore the system with the Toshiba CD in the coming weeks to correct the issues.
But since yesterday, I have had a new problem. The CD drive is not recognized anymore under Windows XP.
I have tried to repair the driver from the CD drive following the procedure described by Toshiba. It did not work. I do not know if it is an hardware or a software problem which prevent me to recognize and use the CD and DVD drive under Windows XP and I do not know either if I can still run anymore a Restore process.
_*1/If I launch a Restore process, I believe that, at the start ,the HD will be formatted. How can I be sure that my computer will be able to read the data from the Toshiba Restore CD?*_ ( I have today a computer which still works almost properly. I would not like to be stuck with a completely dead computer, if the Restore process fails due to the CD driver)
_*2/ Is it possible to restore without using the internal CD drive? (use of an external CD drive or external HD)*_
Thank you in advance for your help and advice!

    Please ignore my request!
I have been able to fix the problem by correcting the Register. The CD/DVD drive works now properly.

    - I've read a little more and come to these conclusions:
. The instructions presume that a CD is included with the card for the purpose of installing the software. A CD/DVD reader is a requirement for this reason.
    2. The card uses Intel HD Audio. This changes enough of what I know about CL's card that I really don't know that the lack of external inputs in the playback mixer is not intentional and uni'versal. A recording application could let you listen to what is being recorded by having an option of playing back what's being recorded.
I have enough uncertainty now that I don't think it's useful for me to continue commenting. If someone who has a? PCI Express X-Fi Xtreme Audio that came with the software CD and hard-copy documentation wishes to share whether or not they have line-in, etc. in the playback mixer, it could be useful.
