  • How to get information about creation of a virtual machine on a Hyper-v host.

    Hi,
How to get information about creation of a virtual machine on a Hyper-v host?
I need: host name, time created, creator user.
I saw in Hyper-V-VMMS but I found info about movements of VM between hosts.
    Thank's in advance.
    Denius Valiant

For Host Name * Created Time Use This Command In PowerShell
Get-VM -Name (Read-Host "Type Your Vm Name") |select CreationTime , ComputerName
and for Create User , As i know you should see on Event Log .
Go To Event Log Viewer--->Applications And Services Logs--->Microsoft--->Windows--->Hyper-V-VMMS--->Operational
You can see in Event Log who create the Vm.

  • How to get Virtual machine reserve (percentage) using WMI

    Hi,
In Hyper-V, Virtual machine reserve (percentage) shows percentage value In UI
    but Msvm_ProcessorSettingData.Reservation range is 1-100000.
    Why it shows like this???
How to get Virtual machine reserve and limit value in percentage???
    Pls Help me.....

    Hi VijendraBoopathy,
I checked the setting of WMI Msvm_ProcessorSettingData , the range of limit and reservation is 0-100000 .
Please refer to the following link:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc136870(v=vs.85).aspx
Also we noticed that there is side-note "(percentage)" of limit value and reservation value :
Based on my understanding of this behavior , this value was converted to percentage by GUI .
So , if you want to get the percentage you may customize the output to percentage .

  • I have a domain with 2 DCs (both virtual machines) in different Hyper-V Hosts. Dose this case make any influence on the time sync?

    As title,
I have a domain with 2 DCs (both virtual machines) in 2 different Hyper-V Hosts, and one of the perform as a PDC Emulator.
Dose this case make any influence on the time sync?
i.e. Both of the VMs sync with Hyper-V host, instead the other host should sync with the PDC Emulator?
I run w32tm command and get the following result:
    C:\Users\Administrator.DOMAIN8>w32tm /query /computer:dc8.domain8.local /source
    VM IC Time Synchronization Provider
    C:\Users\Administrator.DOMAIN8>w32tm /query /computer:hpvzh05.domain8.local /source
    VM IC Time Synchronization Provider
    HPVZH05.domain8.local works as PDC server.
How can I make DC8 sync with HPVZH05?

    Awesome!
It looks like your PDC is successfully pulling time from an external source.  DC8 is not longer pulling from Hyper-V so that is good.
When you set a client to pull from a source ( and in this case DC8 is pulling from NT5DS, which tells it to pull from the PDC), and it CAN'T pull from that source, it will default to Local CMOS Clock.  This is likely an easy fix.
    First, check connectivity:
    - Method one- Download Portqry and run this command: portqry -n HPVZH05 -p both -e 123 and see if the results say listening, or
    - Method two- Run this command from DC8: w32tm /stripchart /computer:HPVZH05
If you get any kind of error using method two, it's a connectivity issue.  (Maybe you have a firewall that's blocking access?)
The other cause of this, and probably more likely in your case, is that your PDC isn't properly advertising as a reliable time source, so DC8 isn't 'allowed' to pull from it.
Try running this command on your PDC: w32tm /config /reliable:yes
Then go restart time on your PDC, THEN DC8 again.  (net stop w32time & net start w32time)

  • How to import a virtual machine to a Hyper-V server by programme on Windows server 2012 ?

    Hi
As we know, Hyper-V of Windows server 2012 can support importing a VM without exporting it first manually now.
So I try to code a programme to do it.
I use the method "ExportVirtualSystemEx" of  "Msvm_VirtualSystemManagementService". referenced by
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd379583(v=vs.85).aspx
But the error said that "You can import a virtual machine only if you used Hyper-V to create and export it."
Since we can import an unexported virtual machine in Hyper-V of windows server 2012 manually, so is there any API to support to do it by programme ?

  • Virtual Machines disappear from Hyper-V Manager on reboot

I have a Windows 2012 RC server that has fail-over clustering installed (single server at the moment), and it has an iSCSI disk that is configured as a CSV volume.  When I create a new VM in Hyper-V Manager, I am storing the .vhdx and machine definition
on that CSV.  Everything is good until I reboot the server.  Once I do that, the VM disappears from the Hyper-V console even though the symbolic link to the server still exists in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Hyper-V\Virtual Machines.
I have tried to add the VM to the cluster manager (Configure Role...High Availability Wizard), but it fails with no error message that indicates why it is failing.  I get the following two errors in the report:
An error occurred while configuring the virtual machine configuration resource 'Virtual Machine Configuration MYVM' with information about the virtual machine.
    and
There was a failure configuring the virtual machine role for 'MYVM'.
Please, override 'Header' property The object has been deleted from the cluster.
The first error occurs after "Notifying virtual machine configuration resource 'Virtual Machine Configuration BUF-FS-SQL' that its configuration has changed..."
I sense it might be related to permissions on the CSV, but not sure what permissions may need to be set?
    Thanks,
    Bob

That did not work.  VM still does not show up after restart. I have tried to import the VM from the original location on the CSV, but I get:
"Hyper-V encountered an error while loading the virtual machine configuration from C:\ClusterStorage\Host\Hyper-V\Virtual Machines\Test\Virtual....\GUID....
Hyper-V encountered an error trying to access an object on computer 'localhost' because the object was not found.  The object might have been deleted, or you might not have permission to perform the task.".....

  • Virtual machine packaging in Hyper-V 2012?

    Hi all,
I am running a custom Linux VM on Hyper-V 2012. Do we have a virtual machine packaging mechanism in Hyper-V 2012 Server, similar to OVF in ESXi?
I tried MSVMC tool. But looks like it only works for Windows guests.
Do we have any other option for getting a VM package in Hyper-V ?
    Thanks in advance,
    Saleem

You Export the VM - that creates a folder of files (not unlike OVF).
You can then zip this or TAR it.  Hand it off, extract it, Import it on the other end.
The process is the same, but the XML is not 'ovf' - it is very similar however.
BTW - OVF is an open standard.  And VMware has an proprietary implementation of it.  So, taking that into consideration as well.  The process is no different.

  • How to make PDFs open fullscreen in Adobe Acrobat DS on iPad?

    Hi,
I'm putting together a corporate interactive PDF, and am struggling to make it open in fullscreen and single page by default on the iPad, despite setting it to do this when exporting. any ideas how to fix this? Thanks.

That is not possible on iOS (and I presume Android) devices.

  • How to make Time Machine only back up once per day?

I really really don't need time machine to back up EVERY HOUR. It's overkill for me and with the level of computing I am forcing my computer to do most of the day its VERY irritating. Is there anyway to change the settings so it only backs up once every night?

Yeah, we tried using TimeMachineEditor on a friend's laptop. There will be 2 laptops backing up, and we wanted them both to backup overnight at different times when there would be no interruptions (for user or computer). It seemed to work OK (have to check w/ them), but how do you verify when backups were actually done?
I have a couple related question to this, though, that may also be helpful for folks:
    - I'm guessing Time Machine cannot do a backup when the computer is asleep, correct? If a Time Machine backup starts while the computer is 'awake', will it keep the computer from sleeping so it can finish?
    - If I set a schedule in the Energy Saver preferences to 'Wake Up' the computer at midnight (before scheduled backup), and 'Sleep' later on (say 4am), does this override the other preferences set for sleep in Energy Saver? (ie - if it's set to sleep after 30min., will the computer wake up at midnight only to go back to sleep 30min. later, or will it stay 'awake' until 4am?)
    - Do you need to uncheck 'Put the hard drive to sleep when possible'?

  • How to make all users have the same working environment?

    Hi guys,
thanks for helping out on this issue.
Is there a way to set all users on your system to have the same working environment? I believe, as root you can edit the /etc/profile. But when I looked at the file, I was confused. I had no idea where to add stuff because it was a script.
Please if anyone can help me explain how to customize system wide working environments, I will be very grateful .
    Thank you
    Arrey

    Hi.
It's not clear what you understand under system wide working environments ?
    /etc/profile it's one possible solution.
Another way - put custimozed .profile to all users and use customezed */etc/skel* for new users.

  • Recommendation for Tape drives/library connected to DPM on virtual machine

    Hi,
we are running DPM as a virtual machine in an hyper-v environment. Now we want to add long term storage -> tape. I looked at virtual tape libraries (firestreamer) but as I want to store the "tapes" externally for DR scenario I thought that this might
not be the best way to go.
We would prefere to use a "traditional" tape library. The best option I found would be iSCSI tape libraries but the only ones I found started at around 6000 US$. As I will be backing up only up to 1.5 TB/night I don't want to spend that much money. In addition
I don't know if they are really going to work.
The other option I saw was to use a SCSI to iSCSI Bridge and connect a SCSI tape library that way. I found solutations for around 3000 US$. Which is still a lot but better then the iSCSI Tape drives.
Does someone else have recommendations or some other ideas what works best? The only entries I found so far were from 2008 and I am quite sure that things have changed since then.

I looked at virtual tape libraries (firestreamer) but as I want to store the "tapes" externally for DR scenario I thought that this might not be the best way to go.
Actually, it might, you can use removable media to host the virtual tape files created by firestreamer and take the removable media offsite.  So instead of rotating physical tapes, you rotate physical removable media.
    Closing for housekeeping.

  • Backing up virtual machines in Hyper-V: theory question

    Hello!
    This article http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd405549%28v=vs.85%29.aspx says:
"Hyper-V uses the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) to backup and restore virtual machines (VMs).
If the backup (volume snapshot) integration services are installed in the guest operating system, a VSS requester is installed that will allow VSS writers in the guest operating system to participate in the backup of the VM. "
    Backing Up the Virtual Machines
Hyper-V uses one of two mechanisms to back up each VM. The default backup mechanism is called the "Saved State" method, where the VM is put into a saved state during the processing of the PrepareForSnapshot event, snapshots
are taken of the appropriate volumes, and the VM is returned to the previous state during the processing of the PostSnapshot event."
The other backup mechanism is called the "Child VM Snapshot" method, which uses VSS inside the child VM to participate in the backup....
Backup (volume snapshot) Integration Service is installed and running in the child VM.
The child VM must be in the running state."
Putting it all together: the backup integration services are installed in the guest operating systems by default (at least in Win2008-2012R2), but "The default backup mechanism is called the "Saved State" method,...",
wich does NOT use child vm snapshot creation. It means that checking the "Backup (volume checkpoint)" checkbox changes nothing (at least with running VMs) because the default method is "Saved state":
Q1: if the default method is "Saved state" and my VMs are running what should I do to take a backup by using
    "Child VM Snapshot" method?
Q2: is there any difference between a backup created by method 1 and method 2?
    Thank you in advance,
    Michael

    Hi,
The two backup mechanisms used in the different backup scenario:
    Short to say is:
Perform a backup from the server running Hyper-V
    (host).
    Perform a backup from
within the guest operating system of a virtual machine.
    The detail explain is:
There are two basic methods you can use to perform a backup. You can:
Perform a backup from the server running Hyper-V. We recommend that you use this method to perform a full server backup because it captures more data than the other method. If the backup application is compatible with Hyper-V and the Hyper-V
VSS writer, you can perform a full server backup that helps protect all of the data required to fully restore the server, except the virtual networks. The data included in such a backup includes the configuration of virtual machines, snapshots associated with
the virtual machines, and virtual hard disks used by the virtual machines. As a result, using this method can make it easier to recover the server if you need to, because you do not have to recreate virtual machines or reinstall Hyper-V. However, virtual networks
are not included in a full server backup. You will need to reconfigure the virtual networking by recreating the virtual networks and then reattaching the virtual network adapters in each virtual machine to the appropriate virtual network. As part of your backup
planning, make sure you document the configuration and all relevant settings of your virtual network if you want to be able to recreate it.
    • Perform a backup from within the guest operating system of a virtual machine.
Use this method when you need to back up data from storage that is not supported by the Hyper-V VSS writer. When you use this method, you run a backup application from the guest operating system of the virtual machine. If you need to use this
method, you should use it in addition to a full server backup and not as an alternative to a full server backup. Perform a backup from within the guest operating system before you perform a full backup of the server running Hyper-V. For more information about
storage considerations, see the following section.

    Planning for Backup

  • Vhd has the sama function as virtual machine or hyper-v in windows 8

    hi,
is VHD has the same function as  hyper-v or virtual machine. if yes then I can make virtual machine from windows 7 home premium if the hardware support it.
    thanks
    johan
    h.david

All VHDs are Virtual Machines and have the same function since they emulate a hardware environment, but they are not compatible between the different VM software.  They each have their own structure and are not directly compatible.  There are utilities
that can be found on the internet that claim to export or import VMs from varies different VM software.
Windows 7 XP Mode and Virtual PC use the same structure, but Hyper-V is a different structure.
