How to manage 2 ipads in family (trying to update games on both)

Hi all,
a few questions please.
I am trying to sort out the 2 ipads so its more easy to manage.
I am trying to use one for work so trying to make sure that emails etc do not go to both but still allowing the kids to play on both when I am at home.
1) I am keeping the same apple id on both so that I can share the apps etc but somehow the games will not update on both. is there something i am doing wrong? ( its worked on one only where the rest are starting at the beginning??)
2) Is there a way of being able to msg one ipad to another with the same apple id?? or do I need to create a seperate apple id?
any help would be appreciated or further information needed please ask.
I am new to ipads so be easy on me.
Thanks all

1. This is the correct way to have it. If you have the same Apple ID on both devices, they can share Apps.
Assuming the Apps/Games on both iPads where bought with the same Apple ID then they should update the same on both.
For emails unless you define the accounts on both iPads under Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars->Accounts. Then only the one with the account defined there will have the emails.
2. They can both have the same Apple ID, as Faroth suggests,  simply adding a different email address in Settings->Messages->Send & Receive-You Can be Reached by iMessage At will enable messaging between them.
When Messaging use the new address to contact the othe iPad.

Hello I went to wipe my 1st generation iPad and then tried to update the iOS now the iPad won't work at all any ideas what I can do?

You can't update the original iPad beyond iOS 5.1.1 so if you were already running that version, there was no reason to wipe the iPad to try to update.
Won't work at all, doesn't tell me the whole story. Does it power up but not respond to anything? Does it not power up at all? Some detailed information in context would really be helpful.
IF the device will not start up, try a reset. Hold down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10 seconds until the Apple Logo appears on the screen.

  • HT4972 How come my iPad does not have software update in the settings?

Help, my iPad does not have software update available in settings, how do I update?

The option to update without the computer (Over the air) was made available with iOS 5. If your iDevice is using a version of iOS lower than 5, you will need to use iTunes on your syncing computer to perform the upgrade. Use the Apple link below as a guide for the upgrade.

  • HT203433 Having an issue with my IPad and IPhone trying to update  my Apps from the Apps store?

I am having a problem with my IPad and Iphone trying to do My Apps updates via the App Store. I see the # of 4 updates in red showing, but when i try to do the updates by hitting the "update button" I get an error message saying I can not connect to the iTunes store although I am signed in already?
    Anyone had the same problem?
    thx,
    Max

I'm not aware of any viruses or malware for iOS devices (except for jailbroken devices), but it might be a software bug.
Try closing all apps via the taskbar and then do another a reset and see if that helps. To close all app : from the home screen (i.e. not with any app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of each app to close them, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
Reset as before i.e. press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • How to manage iPads in schools where VPP not available?

I am trying to set up an iPad scheme with 24 iPads in a school in Portugal, where Apple's VPP program is not available yet. I understand that, in this environment (multiple users and multiple devices) you have to purchase each app for each device, and I think we will have to use iTunes Gift Cards to purchase apps for each iPad.
I have a few questions which I am hoping members of this community will be able to help me with:
Am I right in thinking that I will need a different iTunes Gift Card for each iPad?
Can all 24 iPads be linked to the same iTunes account, or will I need multiple accounts?
Is it possible to use Apple Configurator to set up the iPads if you are not using the VPP scheme?
If not, then is there any point getting a trolley that syncs as well as charges, or will each iPad have to be sync'ed individually if not using Apple Configurator?
Many thanks in advance for any answers or advice!
    Mr. H

    Hi Mr. H,
Sorry to hear that you don't have VPP in your country yet. Hopefully Apple will introduce it in the near future.
    1. For paid apps, you will need to use a separate Apple ID for each iPad. You can load separate iTunes gift cards into each Apple ID account and use those funds to purchase paid apps.
    2. Without VPP, you will need to have a separate Apple IDs for each iPad for paid apps. But for free apps, you can use Apple Configurator to install apps using a single Apple ID. See my quote at the end of this from another post on how to download and install apps with Apple Configurator. I talk about VPP in the post, but you can disregard that part. As long as you download the app with iTunes using the same Apple ID that you use to distribute apps in Apple Configurator, you'll be fine.
    3. Yes. You can use Apple Configurator to prepare and/or supervise your iPads. You can also use Apple Configurator to install configuration profiles and free apps without using VPP. Here's a link to the iOS 6 Education Deployment Guide that has a lot of good information:
    http://images.apple.com/education/docs/ios_6_education_deployment_guide.pdf
    4. You don't *need* a sync cart, but it sure is nice to have one if you are using Apple Configurator, especially if you do get VPP in your country and are dependent upon Apple Configurator to install paid and free apps.
Here's a link to more on how to use Apple Configurator:
    http://help.apple.com/configurator/mac/1.0/
One more link for you… I.T. Resources for Apple in Education. There are some great video tutorials on the left side of the page about half way down under iOS Deployment Model Videos:

    Hope this answers your questions!

---From a previous post of mine on installing apps with Configurator---
Here's how I've been doing it using the latest Apple Configurator 1.1.2.
First, go into iTunes and authorize with an Apple ID (iTunes -> Store -> Authroize this computer). It doesn't have to be a VPP Apple ID…just an ordinary Apple ID used to associate with the app. Then download the app(s). They will go to ~/Music/iTunes/Mobile Applications. These apps will be linked to the Apple ID you authorized in iTunes. Next go into Apple Configurator and add the apps on the Prepare -> Apps screen. When you try to add the app in AC (clicking on the "+" at the bottom of the screen), you should be prompted to enter an Apple ID and password (see screenshot below).
It will say that "This Apple ID will be used to redeem VPP codes…" It is NOT the Apple ID used to purchase the VPP codes… The VPP codes can be redeemed by any Apple ID.
You must enter the same Apple ID and password that you used to download the app in iTunes, and you should be good to go.
Hope this helps!! Good luck everyone.

  • How to sync iPad to new computer/macbook maintaining game data

    Hi,
my wife is using an iPad (1)
Sofar she has synchronized with iTunes on a windows machine.
Right now I want to move to iTunes on a new macbook.
I have synced on the old (windows) computer.
I have 'transferred purchases' on the new macbook.
    (Apple id's are the same)
All apps are now on the iPad and the macbook.
Now we need to sync the iPad and iTunes on the macbook.
Question: what will happen with all game data.
Apparantly all apps (250 games!) will be removed and replaced from /on the iPad.
But what will happen to to game data/status?
Will all the work in (e.g.) the 'Smurf city' be wiped out?
Is the a way to keep/remain/save the game data?
thx in advance for your tips and hints

You want to restore from the backup in order to restore the app data and game saves.
I have posted this a number of times. You have done some of this already, but this is a "start from scratch" list ofinstructions for syncing with a new computer. Anything that does not apply - like transferring music or photos at the end - just ignore.
    1. Authorize the computer.
    2. Turn off auto sync in iTunes
    3. Transfer purchases
    4. Backup the iPad
The following was copied from this thread. This is essentially what you want to accomplish.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/11527071#11527071
    1) Without connecting your iPad to your new computer, start iTunes. Click on iTunes. Click on Preferences. Click on Devices. Check the box next to "Prevent your iPod etc. from automatically syncing." Click OK.
    2) Now connect your iPad to your computer and start iTunes.
    3) When iTunes starts, right click on your iPad under Devices in the left column. Select Transfer purchases etc.
    4) After it finishes transferring all your apps to your computer, right click on your iPad and select Backup your iPad.
    5) After it finishes backing up your iPad, right click on your iPad and select Restore etc.
    6) After it finishes restoring, left click on your iPad , then click on the Apps tab on top, and check the box next to Sync Apps, then click on Apply below.
If everything on your iPad looks good after the sync, go back and click on iTunes / Preferences / Devices and UN-check the box next to Prevent your iPod etc. The only other thing you may want to check is if your contacts, bookmarks, etc. are syncing correctly now. If not, go to the Info tab after connecting and make sure you indicate which features you want to sync with what sources.
Read this thread and the support links as well. There are apps that you can purchase that will allow you to transfer photos from the iPad to your computer. Look at Photo Transfer App in the App store and you can search for others as well.

This support site will help you with transferring iTunes music to your new computer.

One final note - you may want to leave auto sync turned off - but that is totally up to you. I never did use auto sync.
