How to manage 4 music libraries

I have recentl bought 4 nanos and of course they all have different music on them, how do i ensure they all remain sync'd with their own files/libraries and if i want to add to them independantly i can do this without problems. In fact when each is connected i want to see the content of that i pod and add if necessary
Many thanks in advance

to clarify i have 4 different nano's all with different cd's downloads etc.
I would expect that whenever i plug each one into the pc the library on each on would show up on the screen but it does not.I presume there is connection issues somewhere. my daughters do not have the same taste in music as myself or my wife and we do not want all the i pods to be sync'd with the same music libraries. I want to be able to manage each on seperatly and download likewise
please advise
Simon

How can I sync the iTunes music libraries between our 3 MacBooks?

Whenever you update one iTunes Library be sure to copy it to the other two computers. It goes in the /Home/Music/ folder. You can probably does this easily over your local network using File Sharing.
Copy the most recently changed iTunes Library folder to a USB flash drive. Use the flash drive to copy that library onto the other two computers.
Use a backup/sync utility to update each computer over your local network.

  • How do i share music libraries between an older Mac running iTunes 4 and a new one running iTunes 11?

I have an older G4 Mac laptop that I use exclusively for playing music.  Trouble is that it's limited to an older system and thus runs iTunes 4.  Much of my music is on my newer machine which runs iTunes 11.x.  I have made certain libraries available for sharing on my newer machine, but cannot see those libraries on the shared list on the older Mac.  How do I get both machines to see each other.  Note: they also do not see each other if I try to Go -> Connect to server -> Browse.  However, they will connect if I type in the address (e.g. afp...) of the machine that I'm trying to connect to.  Anyway, I'm hoping there's some soft of back compatability setting that I've overlooked.

  • 2 itunes, 1 ipod shuffle - how to manage the music lib(s)?

    Hi all!
I've two computers, lets call the first one 'server' and the second one 'desktop'. The server has an iTunes with a huge music library and serving this via LAN to my Roku Soundbridge and to my workstation, where i've installed itunes too.
Works fine. But now I bought an ipod shuffle and the trouble is, that I can't sync any songs with my new toy...
I want to use the desktop for synchronizing the ipod. Thinking the problem is: all mp3 files are stored on the server, not on the desktop. If I use a local music library on the desktop, synchronizing the ipod works fine.
Is there a way to use the desktop (which is accessing the remote music library on the server) to load music to my ipod?
Hope you understand and can help...
    Greetings
    Christian

Is it possible that two iTunes using the same music library (the shared folder / drive)?
Yes, it can be done. How you do it depends on how you want each library on each computer to work. If you want to share music, but for each computer to have it's own playlists, etc. then follow the instructions here:
iTunes: Moving Your iTunes Music Folder
IMPORTANT: do not delete the iTunes folder or the preference files it contains from your boot hard drive; delete ONLY the tracks themselves (i.e. the contents of the old iTunes Music folder).
Note as well that the tracks will not automatically appear in both iTunes listings when you add new tracks from one of your two computers. You'll have to use the Add To Library command, or drag the new tracks to the iTunes window, to get them to appear in iTunes on the second computer.
If you want both computers to have the exact same library, including playlists, then (presuming you have iTunes 7) you can just drag the entire iTunes folder to your desired location on the shared drive. Then on each system, hold down the Shift key while launching iTunes. You'll be given a dialog box where you can select the iTunes library you want to use. Navigate to and select the iTunes folder in it's new location. Then both systems will have identical iTunes libraries and anything that is added from one computer should appear on both.
In either case, don't delete the tracks from the old location until you've confirmed that they're working correctly from the shared drive.
    Regards.

  • Desperate for advice on how to manage a music collection with iTunes

    Hi All
    Some advice please...... :o)
    To elaborate:
--> I want to keep my music in a directory sorted by folders and subfolders that I create and have the ability to tell itunes where to put the MP3s it Rips from my CDs
--> I want to point itunes at this folder (not import! the songs... why have 2 copies of the same thing... really silly!)
--> I want to use itunes to edit tags where necessary and use it to create playlists
--> Lastly I want to activate iTunes to have a directory view (if such a feature exists) and move between the playlists view and this view at will... Also in the list of music on itunes how would i activate a column showing where the music is stored (i.e. the actual music directory)....
    Then.....
--> I want to be able to move the folder and the itunes db file to any machine install itunes ... point itunes at the directory of music and the itunes db and presto all my stuff nicely sorted and ready to go...
Sorry this is how my brain works and iTunes just seems to want to do it's own thing...
My wife has an iPod mini... and I though it was cool till I started using iTunes... and now I'm considering an iRiver for myself rather.... I get the feeling that apple is trying to lock me into a way of doing things, be it that they are nervous about piracy or want you to purchase songs/videos etc....
Now I couldn't really care about the iTunes store.... my collection is based on CDs that I've collected over years and years (all above board!)... and iTunes is just frustrating the living daylights out of me!
    Show me the light...
    Thanks
iPod Mini   Windows XP Pro   iTunes 6.0

Edit > Preferences > Advanced > General has the location of the iTunes music folder. That is where ripped CDs will go.
The My Documents\My Music\ folder is a special windows folder. If you want to move that, it might be easiest for you to use TweakUI, google for it.
I don't know about the folder view.

  • Changing how iTunes manages my music library

Because I didn't know any better, I originally set up iTunes to COPY files from my "My Music" folder to my "iTunesiTunes Music" folder. Obviously, this method results in two copies of my music library. I now understand this is not necessary and I would like to change it.
I understand what I should have done is to uncheck, or not to have checked in the first place, the option under the "Advanced" tab "Copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library." Unfortunately, as outlined, the damage is already done and my music library takes up twice the amount of disc space that should be necessary to manage it.
Which brings me to my question. Can I fix this by unchecking the box in the previous paragraph then going into Windows Explorer and simply deleting the "iTunesiTunes Music" folder? By doing that, my understanding is iTunes would simply reference my "My Music" folder rather than making a copy and placing it in "iTunesiTunes Music."
    What say you experts?

You could do it the other way round and delete the content files that are not in the iTunes Music folder, that would be the normal way.
iTunes needs to have an iTunes Music folder because that is where it puts any music you purchase or rip with iTunes.
If you want to leave your music where it was, you can delete the iTunes music folder and iTunes will create a new empty one next time it opens.
If you chose that route, also delete iTunes Library.itl in the iTunes folder - this is the library database.
Then you can uncheck your copy to box in preferences and then you can add your music files again using File>>Add folder to Library. This way iTunes will use the files in their original locations.
Be aware that iTunes does not do folder watching so you mustn't move or change anything once the files are added otherwise iTunes will loose them.
Also, remember that the recycle bin is not usually big enough to hold all music file so be careful when deleting things. It is always wise to have backups in case of mistakes.

I have 3 users on one computer with 3 unique user accounts.  Each of us have separate and unique ITunes accounts.  How do we share our music libraries using Home Sharing?  Everything that I can find talks about sharing between networked computers, but this is all on the same computer.  I just want to share between ITunes accounts.  Thanks!

Hi b noir, I also have two users on one pc with two different iTunes libraries.  But I also want to put them onto an external hard drive so that I can free up some memory on the pc.  So I figure I need to consolidate the two users iTunes libraries first before moving to hard drive?  But not quite sure how to do that on the iTunes 11?  Thanking you in advance!!

No it is not possible.  Content purchased from the iTunes Store is permanently tied to the account from which it was originally purchased, and Apple does not provide a way to change it.

If the music is on the same computer, import the songs to your iTunes library by dragging them into iTunes or choosing File > Add to Library (Mac) or File > Add File to Library or Add Folder to Library (Windows).  If the music is on different computers you can set up Home Sharing to copy the music from one library to the other (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3819 and http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4620).

  • How to manage music from an external hdd on iTunes?

    Hello everyone.
I will try to keep it simple in order to be easy to understand...
I have my entire music on an External Drive: WD MY PASSPORT.
I found around here that, if I press OPTION while I move a music folder to itunes, it doesn't copy the music to the itunes folder which was great. Then I found that was an option on properties that allowed me to unable the "auto-copy" of the music I load on itunes to the itunes folder. So that was pretty useful.
BUT the problem I am facing now is the fact that, if my music files doesn't have the right information on them, they load in a disordered way on itunes and I can't modify their info from itunes because it is shown as blocked.
SO! how can I manage my music (manage = modify their info in order to arrange them in the right albums) without copying it to my mac??
I need to do this because, I still having a macbook pro with a 750gb hdd but I am looking foward to get an SSD, so I can't have it loaded with all my music
    Thanks!!

To import music into your iTunes library on the computer go to iTunes>Help>iTunes Help>Add items to iTunes and follow the instructions

  • How do I merge different music libraries on the same computer. I have Iphone and an ipod

I have an Iphone and my wife has ipod nano. We both have different music libraries. Itunes on my mac doesnot allow the merging of libraries. Is there a way of doing so without lossing the music

You can have identical libraries (contents, playlists and related information) if you set each user's account to reference the same .itl file.
Have a look at this article in the Apple Knowledge Base for details on how to do so.
By using the Choose Library option and linking the accounts to the same .itl file, the libraries will be the same and changes made to one will be reflected in the others.
If you don't want completely identical Libraries but just access to the same files to build separate Libraries with, see this article .
