How to manage a 20+GB library on a 10GB ipod?

I have a large set of MP3s (25BG) on my home computer. I'd like to be able to easily load and unload albums onto/off of my ipod (10GB).
It seems relatively simple to add a folder to my music library. (In my case, a folder on my file system is an album). Once added, how do I remove a folder from the library? How do I view which folders have been added to my music library?
This seems like it should be fairly easy, but I can't figure out to do it so I'm guessing I'm missing something obvious.

First tip: iPods are never too much.. buy the 60GB iPod or you must be more selective with your songs. You can not copy songs from the iPod back to the computer or to any computer at all (unless you download iPod Rip) because of copyrights... And in my opinion, after taking precious iSmn advices, you should set iTunes/iPod preferences and sync to manual, it's easier

I have created separate user accounts for my 2 boys on my macbook. How do i get my itunes library onto their new ipods?

They can't.  Which came first - the chicken or the egg?  Actually, that's a bad comparison but a sync must come first.
The library is actually part of iTunes and it contains everything.  iTunes is then configured so that you (or they) determine which portion of everything will be synced to each iPod (identified by a unique name, see below for an example of an iPod and an iPad).  iTunes can't make that decision until AFTER it knows which iPods exist.
By the way, I (you, they) can very easily change the name of each device to whatever I (you, they) wish to call it.

  • How to manage or divide large library?

    Hello all,
My internal hard disk is getting full. I need to free up some space on it. I have purchased an external HD (1T) with Firewire 400 on my iMac Intel Core Duo. 3 1/2 years old.
We have multiple family users on this machine. My user has 50g and my son's user has 30 gigs. Besides just jpegs it has become increasingly filled with the DV movie clips from our digital camera. My 10 year old has taken a passion to this movie clip thing and I see this growing at the biggest rate.
I would like to get some of this off the the external. Here are my thoughts and I was wondering my pros and cons of each.
    1) Put the entire library on the exteranl.
PRO: Saves space in the internal
CONS: Is there a transfer rate issue? My sone desires seemless intergration with iMovie through the Media Browser I think. Will this be as stable as on the internal drive
    OPTION #2
DIvide the library in half or so. Put most of it (years 2000 to 2008) on the external as a SEPARATE library and keep the recent stuff on the internal.
PRO: allows for seemless intergration with iMovie for current stuff. Save a good deal of space
CONS: Is splitting a libray a good idea? How is it done? Now my Time Capsule is only backing up my internal recent stuff and I have to remember to make a safety back up of the stuff sitting on the external?
Can the library be split? Is that good and how best to do this?
I would really appreciate the help!
    Wayne

how will iPhoto and iMovie still be linked together?
Exactly the same way as they are now. There is no differences. iMovie will recognise the default library just as it does now. To move the Library....
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
Again, I cannot stress enough that having the Library on an external will make no difference whatever to the operation of the app or how it integrates with other apps. None.
Can you speak a little about the practicality of splitting the library? Is library manager very stable at this? Would it be separated forever? Is having a library for every couple of years a good idea?
Splitting a Library is a one time operation, there's no "stability" issue. They will be separated until you merge them again - which you can only do with iPhoto Library Manager.
But remember, if you split a Library the other apps will +only know about the default library - the one currently open or most recently open.
I see no appreciable advantage to splitting a Library.

  • How to manage a huge movies library to limited 160GB AppleTV hard disk ?

Hi, I own a huge movies library (1TB) into iTunes ("by reference" on externl hard disk connected to my iMac) and looking forward to manage it from my ATV without having iTunes opened on my iMac, I already know to achieve this is to sync the contents to ATV but doing they will be copied to internal ATV hard disk which in turn is very limited (160GB).
Hence I'm asking you which could be the best settings on iTunes to let me:
    1) having the entire library on ATV (I mean titles)
    2) watching the movie I choose (not yet seen) on ATV
Furthermore I know that it's possible to setup iTunes in order to have on ATV only content not already seen but, I guess, this could point not having the entire "list" of movies on ATV, am I right ?
    Hoping to being clear.
    dalrmi.

this would be a great feature to have in Airport Extreme or Time Capsule. (if anybody reads these) I never understood why Apple didn't make Time Capsule do exactly what you ask for.
Like other people said, the best ways are to leave your machine on for streaming which isn't that bad over wireless, or to build a 160GB playlist of videos and movies and sync just that list over. Every few days you can swap a few out and they'll stay on the Apple TV... great for kids shows they'll watch 15 times in a row anyway. I believe there is also some settings for "newest added" and the Apple TV will "remember" what you watched last in some cases as it caches the stream from iTunes until the device is full.

  • How do I delete songs from library but not my ipod

    Hi,
    Can anyone help me.
I want to delete songs that in my library to increase the memory on my pc, but if I de-select them, they will be deleted from my ipod.
I want to keep all the songs in my ipod but add to them later, how do i do this.
also, i may wish to delete songs later, but again how do i do this if i have deleted my library.
    scott.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
    Set iPod to manual update.
But be warned, if something happens to your iPod later, you may risk losing your songs. Better backup your songs first before deleting them from the computer.

  • Itunes deleted my library from my ipod. now i only have new purchases. how can I get my whole library back onto my ipod?

I just transferred itunes to a new computer. When I plugged in my ipod, I was asked if I wanted to erase my old library and put the new on on. I said yes because my whole library is on this computer. Now that it's done with the sync, I only have the three albums that I just purchased and all of the rest is gone. How can I sync my whole music library back onto this device?

If the lost music and photos are no longer accessible by or on your iPod, on your PC, or in another backup somewhere, you are out of luck.  You can download most iTunes purchases again at no cost via iCloud.  See this article for more information and assistance.
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
For non-iTunes purchased content, you'll need to redownload or rerip them from their original source.
For the future, you may want to consider backing up your iTunes library and/or PC.

  • How do you install your itunes library, currently on my ipod, to a new computer

I'd like to import the content of my ipod nano on to a new computer. The new computer has itunes installed and on previous computers with previous ipods you recieved a prompt to import content from an ipod that was new to the computer. It seems a bit harder these days.

    No, simply did not happen.
    iDevices are not backup devices.
Copy the ENTIRE iTunes folder from the old computer to the new computer.

It should be like the very first time you synced your phone with I-Tunes. It will notice you haven't synced before and just copy everything from your phone into I-Tunes. It shouldn't delete anything from the phone, at least it never has for me. It just puts a copy of everything into I-Tunes and even if you delete an app for example from your phone and you decide you want it back later, you can just go back into I-Tunes and copy it back over. Hope this helps.

  • How to manage a library

how to manage a library? I would like to save half of the library to a external HD, is it possible?

I would like to save half of the library to a external HD, is it possible?
Storing libraries across multiple devices is not supported in iPhoto - you would need Aperture for that.
What you could do, would be to split your library in two libraries, one with the older events, and one with the newer events, for example.
A simple way to do this is
Update your backups, so you have a current backup copy of your system, before you start deleting from your iPhoto libary.
Then connect the external drive and check, if the file system of that drive is correct - MacOS Extended (Journaled). If the drive still has a different default file system, you need to move all data to a different drive and reformat it, see: Format external drives to Mac OS Extended before using with Aperture
Drag the iPhoto library in the Finder from your Pictures folder (or the current location) to a folder on the external drive. This will create a copy on this drive.  Test this copy, if it working. If you are satisfied, that the copy went well, delete the events you do not currently need from the internal libary on yor mac. Ensure that the external drive will be included in your backups.
The more flexible solition would be to use the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager. That will allow you to move selected events to another library. See:

  • How to manage only 1 library in a network

    Hi,
I'm using both a iMac and a MacBook. I want to manage only 1 iTunes Library. I have put my library into Timecapsule because I have lots of room. TC is also my wireless router.
However, when I play music on my computer, I got music timeouts (sounds cut for a few seconds) which is really annoying. Could I overcome this problem somehow?
If I place my iTunes library into the "share folder" then accessible from both computer, would that be better in terms of sound quality? If so, would that take room on my MacBook or iMac?
    Thx
    Simon

There is quite a bit of data that is stored in the System Properties. Run this little test app and it'll display all of the System Properties, what you are looking for may be contained in there:
    public class Test {
        public static void main(String[] args) {
            System.getProperties().list(System.out);
    }
