How to manage a library

I would like to save half of the library to a external HD, is it possible?
Storing libraries across multiple devices is not supported in iPhoto - you would need Aperture for that.
What you could do, would be to split your library in two libraries, one with the older events, and one with the newer events, for example.
A simple way to do this is
Update your backups, so you have a current backup copy of your system, before you start deleting from your iPhoto libary.
Then connect the external drive and check, if the file system of that drive is correct - MacOS Extended (Journaled). If the drive still has a different default file system, you need to move all data to a different drive and reformat it, see: Format external drives to Mac OS Extended before using with Aperture
Drag the iPhoto library in the Finder from your Pictures folder (or the current location) to a folder on the external drive. This will create a copy on this drive.  Test this copy, if it working. If you are satisfied, that the copy went well, delete the events you do not currently need from the internal libary on yor mac. Ensure that the external drive will be included in your backups.
The more flexible solition would be to use the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager. That will allow you to move selected events to another library. See:

  • How to manage iphoto library

I currently have 33,000 pictures in iphoto. How do you recommend managing my library? Ideally I would like to have a separate library by year. Since I have about 5 years worth of photos in this existing library how do I seperate them?
    Thanks

The free way: IF you have enough disk space: Duplicate your library and remove the pics for the other four years... repeat as necessary.

  • How to manage iPhoto library that's too big for my hard drive

I have a mid-2007 iMac with a 250 GB HD.   My iPhoto library is  164GB.  Is there a way to move this library off the HD to a backup drive?  I have no more capacity to operate with.
    O'S X 10.7.5.   IPhoto '11

Yes, you can move the iPhoto Library to any other attached Mac drive and it will work fine. Double-click the moved file to launch iPhoto, and it will remember the library location the next time - you can just launch iPhoto normally from that point on.
Delete the original once you're sure the new file works.
You might also want to look at iPhoto Library Manager, which lets you split a large library file into multiple libraries. I think it's about $20-30.

  • How to manage iphoto library location?

I can have iphoto library either in Mac's SSD (128GB) or external hard-disk. If the whole library is in SSD, it can't grow beyond 128GB or at max 512 GB). If I move the whole library to external hard-disk, I will have to mount it every time I need to look at the photos. Is it possible to split the library between mac's internal SSD and external hard-disk such that favorite and recent photos stay on both SSD and hard-disk and all the photos in external hard-disk? Whenever hard-disk is plugged in, it can sync and show all the photos in iphoto. Is it possible to do this in mac?

    Yes. By having two Libraries.
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
Now you have two full versions of the Library.
    3. On the Internal library, trash the Events you don't want there
Now you have a full copy of the Library on the External and a smaller subset on the Internal
    Some Notes:
As a general rule: when deleting photos do them in batches of about 100 at a time. iPhoto can baulk at trashing large numbers at one go.
You can choose which Library to open: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
You can keep the Library on the external updated with new imports using iPhoto Library Manager

  • HOW TO MANAGE SECOND LIBRARY ON ONE PC

I have created a second library on my Win 7 PC as per instructions. I have added files from one folder. My question is....if I tick yes to these two options in Edit>Preferences>Advanced :
    KEEP ITUNES MEDIA FOLDER ORGANIZED
COPY FILES TO ITUNES MEDIA FOLDER WHEN ADDING TO LIBRARY
Will it affect my original library?
Will the second library behave the same as the original?
I wish to keep the source folders for the two libraries separate from one another. Any advice here would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Chris,
As you suggested, I plugged the "New Nano" in my C110 and it worked fine. All songs from my "Old Ipod" are now on the "New Ipod". The 60GB is assigned to the C300 and tomorrow I will get back my "old repaired Nano" and I would like as well to assign it the the C300, but I think my laptop won't recognize it. Can you assign more than one Ipod per PC?

  • How to manage a itunes library bigger than 4TB? Help!

    Hi,
We are a family big on homesharing and keep all our music/movies/tv shows on one apple id.  Plus we are apple tv addicts and subscribe to lots of tv series and purchase a lot of movies.  The itunes library is now more than 4 TB and has outgrown the external hard drive it is sitting on.  The disk is full.
Any ideas as to how I should proceed?  I do know how to transfer the library to an even bigger external hard drive - but I'm reluctant because they are hard to find and very expensive.  Plus I'm wondering if there is a better idea. Is there anything else I can do that won't mess up the existing library.
    Thanks

I've seen the terms "Drobo" and "NAS" mentioned here in connection with large libraries.  Some issues do arise with them though, and you do have to be somewhat technically capable of setting up that kind of thing.

  • Managing itunes library (how to put an audiobook in the audiobook folder)

All of my audiobooks (my personal audiobooks, not ones from itunes)import to my music folder and not into the audiobook folder. Moreover, I can't move the files there after the import either. It "looks" like I can click and drag the file into the audiobooks folder but when I do, nothing happens. The genre is recognized as "books or spoken" but I can't seem to "manage" my library like I thought I would be able to do.

Thank you everyone for all your help. I have one last question in response to the solutions put forth about my audiobook issues.
Is there a way to change multiple file extensions at once? Some audiobooks have a track every three minutes of "book reading time". This allows users to quickly get to the last place they were in an audiobook. The problem though is that this can lead to hours worth of work to change one file extension at a time. Can I change multiple extensions (m4a to m4b) at once or can I take multiple tracks and combine them into "larger" tracks? Like I said, some audiobooks consist of hundreds if not thousands of tracks on some of the larger novels. It would take days to rewrite the file extensions.

  • How to share iTunes library between 2 accounts on 1 Mac

I want to share my library with my son on his account. Both accounts are on the same computer. What steps do I need to take to do this? Thank you in advance.

My wife and I share the same iTunes library on the same Mac but have separate user accounts.
    To do this:
    1. Make a folder called ‘Music’ in Users/Shared and move your iTunes library to this new folder.
    2. Ctrl + click on the ‘Music’ folder and select ‘Get Info’.
    3. Click on the padlock icon at the bottom of the ‘Get Info’ window and enter your password.
    4. Set the permissions as follows:
Your user name (Me) = Read & Write
    Wheel = Read & Write
    Everyone = Read & Write
    5. Click on the gear icon to the left of the padlock and choose ‘Apply to enclosed items’.
    6. Click OK.
    7. Close the ‘Get Info’ window.
    8. Log into each user account and create an alias to the new shared iTunes library in their User/Home/Music folder (the default location for the iTunes library).
Note: If an iTunes library already exists in the users ‘Music’ folder you will need to delete this first and don’t forget to backup just in case something goes wrong.
Each account will now be able to access the same shared music library.
One final thing which usually catches people out. You will need to tell iTunes to ‘Keep iTunes Music folder organised’ and ‘Copy files to iTunes Music Folder when adding to library’.
    To do this:
    1. Open iTunes
    2. From the iTunes menu, choose Preferences
    3. Click Advanced
    4. Select the ‘Keep iTunes Music folder organised’ option
    5. Select the ‘Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library file’ option
    6. Click OK
Note: This needs to be done in both user accounts.
The only slight down side of this method is that if I add any new music to the shared iTunes library in my account, my wife has access but she isn’t able to change the info (artist name, album, track number etc…) as I am the owner of that music (the files have standard permissions applied when added so I have Read & Write access but my wife has read only access). The same applies if my wife adds some music through her user account. This isn’t a problem for me as I’m the one who manages the library and adds music, my wife simply wants to be able to access it.
If you want to manually change the permissions so that both users can change info, simply navigate to the ‘iTunes Music’ folder which is located in Users/Shared/Music/iTunes/ and Change the permissions using the same method above, making sure you ‘Apply to enclosed items’.
This will need to be repeated each time any new music is added. If you want to know how to set things up so both users can change info on tracks without having to manually change permissions each time then this can be done, but it will require delving into ACL permissions.

  • How to manage windows cluster on windows server 2008 R2

Hi I want to know how to properly shutdown or stop windows cluster with out failover or  failing it.
I have successfully created windows cluster on win 2008 R2 sp1 using vmware with starwind software for SAN storage.
Now when I  shut down or stop cluster service on node1 it failsover and shows critical errors fine.ok... I tried to destroy and clean up cluster  using cmd commands.Forcecleanup both nodes with cmd commands.it was successful.
Later I recreated san storage with target and initiator configuration using starwind without any issue.
I Reinstalled FC service on both the nodes restarted vmnodes.I cheked all the firewall were disable.and machines able to ping well..
Now when I tried to recreate new cluster it fails and gives different errors.AS  Node1 was evicted from cluster,Another was Quoram was lost as no witness disk was found.
Also It did not show my cluster under FCM on Node2.I tried to add node Node2 but error saying Node2 is already in a cluster.
So I want to know how to manage windows cluster properly and manage it entries in active directory so that even after shutting/stopping the service/destroying cluster I do not need to do all over again.
I had to recreate all VMware from start and do AD setup and SAN storage again then only windows cluster got successfully created once again....................
I had to recreate all vmware nodes with FC sevice reinstalled and also recreate AD DS and DNS.

  • I still can't figure out how to manage & sync my medias.

    Hi everyone

how to keep one folder in the phone ?
How does this Syncing business work?

  • How to Manage Text In PDF

    Hi everyone.
I am pretty new to PDF programming world and for study PDF ,I am prefering PDF specification.
I can manage Printing text on my page but when my text length goes out to the page range it get crop

please suggest how to manage this problem.
currently I am tackling this prob by
    T*[()] TJ
but I have to do it manually..
    thanks in advance.

You have to do this manually. That is just one reason why it's in general a
bad idea to create PDF files from scratch: You have to process all the font
metrics yourself and find out how wide your text will be, and then position
it accordingly on the page. When you use a PDF library or framework, that
is usually done for you (or at least there are ways to get to that
information in a much more user/programmer friendly way).

  • How can get the library items total file size

    Hi All,
I want to get the total file size of the library and count how many file in library.
would I use getItemsRequest can get them?
or have another ways to do that?
    Thank You
    Jimmy

Sorry, I don't have any ideas.
Just so you know, the document management support is the lowest priority.
There are not any active enhancements planned for document management.
We added some support in 12.0.x for WebAccess, but there is none planned
    further.

  • How to synchronize iPhoto library on 2 macs

I LOVE iPhoto....it and any apple software that is its successor will be how I manage my pictures hopefully for the rest of my life.
But here's the thing.....I have a LOT of computers. And I am very good at making sure everything is backed up. But let's say I want to designate one computer as the master iPhoto library holder....every time I import photos, sometimes hundreds, I make adjustments and assign keywords. I then want to make sure those changes to my iPhoto library exist on my other computers.
The only way to do that seems to be to hook up the 2 computers however I desire (ethernet, firewire 400/800, etc) and copy the entire iPhoto Library file from the master computer to the secondary machine every time. There's no way to tell the secondary machine to synchronize with the primary so that the only thing that gets copied over are the NEW images and all their assigned keywords and adjustments.
Anyone know of a program that solves this problem and can synchronize iPhoto Libraries say across a local area network?
    Thanks and Happy New Year!!!

    David
You cannot do this. There is no application that will merge the data from the master db file with the data on the client libraries.
The nearest you can come to it is to use iPhoto Library Manager to mve files and associated metadata between libraries, and so keep them up to date, but there is no automation in this.
An alternative is to point all the iPhotos are the same library:
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to an external HD set to ignore permissions.
On each machine in turn: Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting dialogue, select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new library location. From that point on, this will be the default library location. All machines will have full access to the library, in fact, all machines will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.

  • Manually Manage iTune Library

I want to Manually Manage iTune Library between 2 Macs. Today I plugged my iPhone and clicked Muanully Manage Music and it asked me that this is synched with another iTunes Lib. and It will delete all ibrary and it won't let me apply.. I can do this with my iPOD Classic.. But I can't do this with my iPhone?? I have too big of a Library and I can't be synching.
I said apply and now all my music and video is gone on my iPhone..
    Help!!!

Each device can be managed individually as you desire: manually, selected playlists, or auto-sync.
Typically, an iPhone can be synced with an iTunes library on a single computer only for Music and Photos. You are able to sync contact info, calendar events, and Safari bookmarks on multiple computers.
If you want to sync Music/Photos on multiple PCs then the links below may help. While not an Apple endorsed method, you can see these workarounds (2 examples):
    i) One iPhone, Two Computers, Many Solutions
ii) How to sync an iPhone with two (or more) Computers
Generally, a Google search will yield more than enough websites that can assist you should you need more options. They are not too hard to find. Search, Evaluate, then choose one that makes you comfortable.
    Best of Luck
