How to manage iPhoto libraries

How to easily switch from one iphoto library to another, move photos from one library to another etc.

David Neale1 wrote:
iPhoto '11 9.4.2 has the menu item File>Switch to Library…
Can you not manage libraries that way?
No - you can not manage libraries that way - you can switch libraries that way - exactly the same as the more general
You can switch libraries by depressing the option key, launching iPhoto and using the select library command
but you can not manage them that way or move photos between them that way
You can move photos (but not versions) by exporting from one and importing to the other one
But all that being said twice
IPLM. http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ is the best tool for managing multiple libraries
It lets you move photos between libraries keeping all versions and all information

  • How to synchronize iPhoto libraries over network

how to synchronize iphoto libraries on multiple macs?

What do you mean by "Sync".
The general term means when two Libraries (A and B) are compared and files in Library A are copied to Library B, while files in Library B are also copied to Library A so that both Libraries are identical.
This is bi-directional copying and you cannot do this automatically with iPhoto. No Syncing software is capable of parsing the iPhoto Library in this manner. One or both of your Libraries will be damaged if you try this.
You can have uni-directional copying - files in Library A are copied to Library B - this is essentially backing up. Obviously you can also copy from Library B to Library A.
The nearest you can get to syncing is to use iPhoto Library Manager to move files/Albums/Events plus associated metadata between Libraries. This process cannot be automated.

  • Do not understand how to manage multiple libraries in iTunes

    Hope to learn from you!
What I am trying to achieved?
Using the proper procedures as described in "iTunes for Mac: Moving your iTunes Media folder" - I have succesfully moved my iTunes library to an external hard disk. So, I can play from this HDD when it is connected. That's good. I have trashed this library from the internal disk.
I want to keep a smaller iTunes library in my laptop - so I can play music without having the HDD connected. I do not need to keep this library in sync with the external main HDD - but, it is fine if it is.
So, I created a new iTunes in my laptop and named it "iTunes Laptop". I will "option" launch iTunes and select this library. In the "advanced" preference pane - both these "Keep iTunes Media folder organised" and "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library" are ticked.
Now, when I copy music from CD to this "iTunes Laptop" - it will copy to this folder "iTunes Laptop>Music" AND to the 'iTunes Media" on the HDD.
But, I can play the copied music on the "iTunes Laptop" ONLY when the HDD is connected - but, the music files arte in BOTH the "iTunes Laptop>Music" AND "iTunes Media" on the HDD!
Does anyone understand what I have done correctly to achieve my objectives stated above? Or, what is your ways to doing something similar?
    Kind regards.

    You're welcome, Rob.
Thanks again for your prompt advice. Is there any way to merge libraries?
There is not yet a simple, lossless way to merge libraries.  It would be better to merge all iPhoto Libraries into one before migrating them to Photos.
    You have two options:
Merge the iPhoto Librariess with Aperture, if you have a compatible Aperture version. See:  Aperture 3.3: How to use Aperture to merge iPhoto libraries
Merge the iPhoto Libraries with iPhoto Library Manager before migrating. But you would need the full, paid version: See:  http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/Help/merging%20libraries.html
If you want to store the libraries in iCloud Photo Library, you could alternately upload one library after the other by opening it as your main System Photo Library and enabling  iCloud Photo Library, This would result in a merged Library in iCloud, but your Faces data would not download again.
And would cause a lot of network traffic and you would need an advanced storage plan for iCloud to store a large library.
    iCloud Photo Library beta FAQ
The lossy option is to export all photos from the libraries to be added and to import them to iPhoto.

  • Managing iPhoto Libraries

I am having trouble with my iPhoto libraries. I'm on a MacBook Air, and I keep running out of drive space. To solve this, among other deletions, I end up moving my iphoto libraries to external hard drives. So now I have three iphoto libraries, and am in need, once again, of clearing space off my laptop.
Does anyone have suggestions how to do this more efficiently?
    Thanks

Yes - use iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  to merge the libraries on teh external drive and then use iplm to move photos between the MBA and the external libraries

  • How to unmerge iphoto libraries?

i accidentally merged two different user's iPhoto libraries on my mac. How do i spereate them so that one users photos only stay on their iPhoto account?

Not at all sure what you are saying since there is no way to merge libraries using iphoto - by mistake or intentionally
But the most likely answer is to restore the backup from before you made this mistake, what ever it was

  • How to merge iPhoto Libraries?

    Hello!
On my iMac, I have 2 iPhoto libraries. I want to merge them. What would be the best (or easiest) way to do that without

If you have Aperture 3.3 or later and iPhoto 9.3 or later you can merge libraries with Aperture.
Otherwise the only way to merge Libraries is with the paid ($20) version of iPhoto Library Manager
You can export from one library to the finder and afterwards import to another, but this is not merging libraries.

  • How to access iPhoto Libraries folders

    Hi Helpful Apple Lovers!!!
First, thanks for all the past help.
I want to erase the useless original images once they are modified to save on hard drive space. How can I access the contents of the folders, without having to reach it through finder? WIll this allow me to add new folders to a back-up of my past iPhoto Libraries? Thank you all again.

I want to erase the useless original images once they are modified to save on hard drive space. How can I access the contents of the folders, without having to reach it through finder?
No you can not do this - if you do it via the finder you will corrupt your iPhoto database and lose data - as you have read on these boards iPhoto ALWAYS maintains teh original of every photo in its daabase and you always have the capibility to revert to it
You can export the photos you have modified, delete them in iPhoto, empty the iPhoto trash and import the ones you just exported
WIll this allow me to add new folders to a back-up of my past iPhoto Libraries?
You can always add new photos by importing them into iPhoto - depending on your backup software you may or may not be able to add to old backups

  • How merge 2 iphoto libraries?

I wish to combine separate existing iphoto libraries into one and have been unable to locate help with this on my own.
    Thanks in advance.

Allie's absolutely right. iPhoto Library manager is the only option currently available to achieve what you want.
Do not try using a syncing application as that will only ruin both libraries.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

  • How to combine iphoto libraries

I want to import an iphoto library from another computer to my computers iphoto library from an external. How do I do this? I want all of the pictures from my library and the imported library together. When I try to move it asks if I want to replace my current library. How do I make both libraries into one?

  • How to manage iPhoto library that's too big for my hard drive

I have a mid-2007 iMac with a 250 GB HD.   My iPhoto library is  164GB.  Is there a way to move this library off the HD to a backup drive?  I have no more capacity to operate with.
    O'S X 10.7.5.   IPhoto '11

Yes, you can move the iPhoto Library to any other attached Mac drive and it will work fine. Double-click the moved file to launch iPhoto, and it will remember the library location the next time - you can just launch iPhoto normally from that point on.
Delete the original once you're sure the new file works.
You might also want to look at iPhoto Library Manager, which lets you split a large library file into multiple libraries. I think it's about $20-30.

  • How to manage iphoto library

I currently have 33,000 pictures in iphoto. How do you recommend managing my library? Ideally I would like to have a separate library by year. Since I have about 5 years worth of photos in this existing library how do I seperate them?

The free way: IF you have enough disk space: Duplicate your library and remove the pics for the other four years... repeat as necessary.

  • How to transfer iPhoto libraries to an external hard drive.

I would like to transfer my iPhoto library from my iMac (2004) and my MacBook (2008) to an external hard drive (WD EX2, formatted for Mac). I will be purchasing a new MBP soon and handing down the older Mac's. I would like to be able to keep all of the photo/video information intact and maybe one day amalgamate them.
First things first though, any suggestions on the best way to transfer the files from each computer to the EHD?
    Thanks in advance

I installed iPhoto Library Upgrader on both machines
Yes, I chose the transfered library by pressing "Choose Library".
You only need the iPhoto Library upgrader, if you want to open the library in the current version, iPhoto '11. If your current version is iPhoto '09, as you are saying, you do not need it. But for a new Mac with iPhoto '11 you will need to upgrade any iPhoto'07 libraries.
. I opened iPhoto and "switched to" the imported library. It opens but there are no files in it. I know the original file that was transfered is 50G.
Your screenshot is showing an empty, new iPhoto library. And that iPhoto Library simply cannot be an iPhoto '09 library. Just look at the icons in the library source list. These gray icons have been introduced with iPhoto '11, version 9.3 or later. We need to get the version numbers straight. When iPhoto is running on your MacBook, is the Dock icon blue/cyan or sunset-coloured?  What version number are you seeing in the About panel "iPhoto > About iPhoto"?
If you are really runnin iPhoto '11, try to open your transferred library by selecting it directly and double clicking it.
Do you by any chance have two iPhoto versions on your MacBook?
I hope, LarryHN is still following this thread and can help, with getting the versions sorted . I have only the most recent iPhoto '11, version 9.5.1 available for testing.

  • How to manage iphoto library location?

I can have iphoto library either in Mac's SSD (128GB) or external hard-disk. If the whole library is in SSD, it can't grow beyond 128GB or at max 512 GB). If I move the whole library to external hard-disk, I will have to mount it every time I need to look at the photos. Is it possible to split the library between mac's internal SSD and external hard-disk such that favorite and recent photos stay on both SSD and hard-disk and all the photos in external hard-disk? Whenever hard-disk is plugged in, it can sync and show all the photos in iphoto. Is it possible to do this in mac?

    Yes. By having two Libraries.
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
Now you have two full versions of the Library.
    3. On the Internal library, trash the Events you don't want there
Now you have a full copy of the Library on the External and a smaller subset on the Internal
    Some Notes:
As a general rule: when deleting photos do them in batches of about 100 at a time. iPhoto can baulk at trashing large numbers at one go.
You can choose which Library to open: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
You can keep the Library on the external updated with new imports using iPhoto Library Manager

  • Merging iPhoto libraries on mac with 2 users

Hi, I have iphoto manager but can't figure out how to merge iphoto libraries
I have my daughters macbook as she passed away in May
I used time capsule to move the contents of my macbook to hers but it made as new user
I want all the photos in one library on my user account but I can't choose her iphoto library as
it says I don't have permission
Weird how everything is on one computer but having 2 users seems like you can only access your own stuff
I just want to have all photos on my iphoto
    Any help?

This worked thank u so much
Another quick question, iTunes doesn't seem to be aware that id like to use this computer as my new home base
I think I already had it authorized as we shared songs.
I had checked that I wanted certain faces from iPhoto but it included quite a few I didn't have checked
I'm not sure how to tell it this is my "new computer"

  • Newbie question abount managing java libraries

    Hello all,
I'm rahter new to Java and have a question about how to manage java libraries in a central location. I've been told to use Maven, but I don't need/want to use it.
I'm only asking a way to have centralized the different Java libraries that a Developer Team may use in a form that they could download to their PCs and use in their projects, thinking in a free IDE environment where could be JDeveloper, NetBeans and Eclipse in use.
I'm thinking in use Subversion to upload the different Java libraries files to a Subversion Repository and then each Developer Team doing a checkout of what they need, but I think it's not the primary use to do with the versioning system.
Please, could somebody point me out if there is any product that could fit my needs about managing Java libraries ?
    Thanks in advance.
    Angel.

    - limit the set of packages to those which have been approved by the processYou can constrain Maven to only use an internal repository from which to pull libraries. If you don't put the libraries in the repository you can't use them in your project.
    - limit the packages by licenseI don't think there's anything built in to do this. There's a space for that information in the pom (metadata) file though, so it would be possible to do so. You'd probably have to do some work on the repository to bring ensure the fields was populated though - I get the impression that it tends not to be by default.
    - produce audit logs of what the dependencies and licenses used by each project isDependencies yes, certainly. Licenses again I don't think there's anything existing but you could probably adapt the dependency plugin to report this.
