How to manage PDF opening in client installed Adobe Reader?

Hi!
As a background, I have this Document Library in SharePoint Online containing PDF files that are supposed to be confidential files wherein the users can only view the pdf documents, restricting the Printing, Copying of Content and Saving/Dowloading.
As a workaround, this PDF files are password encrypted and toolbars and menu bars are hidden by default. That's why I need to open it using the local client PDF Adobe Reader. Since if through the browser, the pdf file security enforced becomes useless with
the Save and Button buttons visible and Browser Menu Bar can directly be accessed.
My problem is how do I enforce that PDF files stored in a Document Library in SharePoint Online be opened directly in local client PDF Adobe Reader without asking the users to
Disable the Adobe PDF Reader add-on of their browser IE  because we have no control over if they follow it or not and also this will also depend on the type of browser used by the user.
Why is it that this Library Settings option in SharePoint Online does not work "open documents in the local client application"?
Please your solution to this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Venus

Hi,
From your description, you might want to force the .pdf file to not able to open in browser.
As there is no such OOTB feature can meet your requirement, a workaround is that we can use JavaScript to iterate through the Name column of the library, if there is
a file name ends with “.pdf”, we can modify the click event of the name string element of the Name column of this item to make it download the file instead of opening it.

  • Cannot read "must have" pdf - no way to install adobe reader

I just received an email attaching a pdf that is extremely important to me - has a form that I must have for an application and cannot seem to get it or anywhere else on the internet.  When I went to view it both in my email attachment and on the internet, I was given the message:
"If this message is not eventually replaced by the proper contents of the document, your PDF viewer may not be able to display this type of document.
You can upgrade to the latest version of Adobe Reader for Windows®, Mac, or Linux® by visiting http://www.adobe.com/go/reader_download.
For more assistance with Adobe Reader visit http://www.adobe.com/go/acrreader."
I found that all could find were updates which would not install because I had no Adobe Reader to being with.  Not showing in Applications or Library/Internet plug-ins.  I really need the form from the pdf.  What can I do?

The first link is to the latest version, not an update.

  • Error message when trying to open a newly installed Adobe Reader from Old Software reinstalled

I am unable to open my Adobe Acrobat Professional 7 that came with Adobe CS2. There is an error message that says "No valid Acrobat Serial Number found. Acrobat will now quit."
There is no area to input the serial number even though I have it on the case that came with my CS2 software.
Please let me know how I can fix this so I can use it on my computer.
    Thank you.

  • How do i fix this error and install adobe reader?

The error is : Windows installer does not permit updating managed advertising products. At least one feature of the product must be installed before updating the update.

Never heard of this one, but you can try using the full offline Reader installer from

  • I have Firefox 3.0.10 and cannot seem to find the right plugin for reading pdfs. I've installed Adobe Reader but it doesn't work. Help.

I cannot seem to find or install a plug in for reading pdfs in the browser window. I get that yellow bar telling me I need a plug in and click to install but nothing happens or changes

You're going to need an '''older version''' of that extension from here: <br />
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/7518/versions/
    Firefox PDF Plugin version 1.1.2 = for 3.0.x and 3.5.x versions <br />
The latest is only for Firefox 3.6.x versions.
'''Or''', you could upgrade to a newer version of Firefox!

My safari (and i keep it updated) cannot open PDF files.Should i install Adobe Reader and which version????/ I have Mac Book Pro running OS 10.9
    Please help me!!!!

    Back up all data.
If Adobe Reader or Acrobat is installed, there should be a setting in its preferences such as Display PDF in Browser. I don't use those applications myself, so I can't be more precise. Deselect that setting, if it's selected. Otherwise do as follows.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
From the folder that opens, move to the Trash any items that have "Adobe" or “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it as well, if it's present. The same goes for a plugin called "iGetter," and perhaps others — I don't have a complete list.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

  • I have re-installed Adobe Reader on to my Windows 7 PC. When I open a PDF I was getting an error message containing  . . . .Acrord32.exe application error . . . . I now cannot open any PDF's. Adobe seems to be unresponsive.

I have re-installed Adobe Reader on to my Windows 7 PC. When I open a PDF I was getting an error message containing  . . . .Acrord32.exe
I now cannot open any PDF's and Adobe seems unresponsive. I have tried to follow a step by step guide on how to fix this but Adobe won't stay open long enough for me to complete the steps. When I open Adobe it stays open for a matter of seconds then minimises to the task bar and when I click on it again I can't do anything with it and have to close it via task manager
    Please help!?

Disabling Protected Mode should fix the problem.  But since you cannot even open Adobe Reader by itself, you need to do it via the Windows registry.  If you tell me your installed Reader version, I can give you a registry script to do that.

Adobe Reader is installed on the client side, not on the web server.
Viewing PDFs online is a browser setting.

  • Issue: installed Adobe Reader XI, Norwegian version, existing pdf will not open or appear empty

I have uninstalled and reinstalled a number of times, but I still have the same issue. Adobe automatically gives me the Norwegian version as I live in Norway. When I open existing pdf files they appear empty, and automatically close themselves after a few seconds.
Any idea how I can solve this problem?
    Your input is highly appreciated!
    Thank you.

Thank you so much for your swift response, Pat! The first step – accepting the Eula license agreement solved my problem ☺ ☺ ☺
Wish you a great day – you just helped making mine a lot better!

You don't provide any details, but from the sound of it you are trying to open an online PDF in a browser that does not use the Adobe Reader plugin: http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/pdf-browser-plugin-configuration.html

The add annotations field shows as not allowed in the security options. So how do I send this form back with the changes??

I think you you need to click 'save' first, then it is saved to acrobat, where it will prompt to send.

  • I installed Adobe Reader X and i can't print PDF's without opening Reader first

Hi, i am using windows XP and i just installed Adobe Reader X onto a workstation within' my office. I use to have Adobe Reader 9 where i could just open a folder with my PDF's. For example, My Documents folder and right click on the PDF i want to print, without opening the file in Adobe Reader first and then clicking print. With Adobe Reader X, i can't do the right click option and print because nothing happens.
Is they an option in Adobe Reader X i need to turn on or off, to get the function of printing by right clicking on the PDF file without opening Reader X to print please ?

Is it happening all the times or happened just in the starting when you hadn't accepted EULA?
Is it still happening after accepting EULA?
Also, can you please tell what printer exactly are you using?
