How to manage storage

I have updates in my App Store but when I go to update. It tells me there's no storage room to update. It then sends me to setting but I don't know what I'm suppose to change and or fix

All you can do is delete from the iPod iTunes purchases that you are not currently using and then redownload them via iCloud
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
When you need them.

  • How to manage storage efficiently on my 5S 16GO?

    Hello Apple community!
I've a 16GO and I use it a lot to take pictures and vids, which fills up the storage pretty quickly.
I have iCloud and I paid to get 20GO, but I don't really know how to use it efficiently.
Technically, it's supposed to upload all my stuff automatically, right?
So should I just periodically delete all the stuff in my Camera Roll? Is there a way to do it without having to select all the pictures one by one?
Should I back-up my stuff on my computer too?
I admit all the iCloud/iOS storage management thing is really confusing to me. :-x
    Anyway, thanks for reading!

Deleting photos from the camera roll doesn't delete anything from iCloud (photo stream).  However, the only way to keep photos permanently in iCloud is to add them to a shared stream (see http://help.apple.com/icloud/#/mmc0cd7e99).  My photo stream photos only remain in iCloud for 30 days.  The problem with using shared streams as your backup is that the photos will be a lower resolution than your originals in the camera roll (approx. 3.1-3.5 megapixels).  That is satisfactory for viewing them on your devices, and will allow you to delete the originals from the camera roll to free up space, but as razmee209 suggested earlier, you should import the original full resolution photos to your computer before deleting them from your camera roll (as explained here: iOS: Import personal photos and videos from iOS devices to your computer).

    Hi karlos16,
For the error message you are seeing, I found this article:
    iCloud: Troubleshooting creating backups
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3992
"This iPhone cannot be backed up because there is not enough iCloud storage available."
This message is displayed when there is not enough storage space available in your iCloud Storage to complete your backup. You can either reduce the amount of data you are backing up under Backup Options, or you can buy more storage.
For the issue with the iPhone appearing to be unresponsive, I recommend this article for troubleshooting:

  • Hi, how do I manage storage? Disk Utility says "other" is taking up most of my storage but I don't know where to find "other".  Please help!

Hi, how do I manage storage? Disk Utility says “other” is taking up most of my storage but I don’t know where to find “other".  Please help!

For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article. If the Storage display seems to be inaccurate, try rebuilding the Spotlight index.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
              iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then restart the computer. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation—not the mythical 10%, 15%, or any other percentage. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as  Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside a photo or iTunes library will corrupt the library. Changes to such a library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper 2>&-
    sudo /Applications/GrandPerspective.app/Contents/MacOS/GrandPerspective 2>&-
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator. Ignore any other messages that appear in the Terminal window.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • Hi, I lost some of my keynote documents during manage storage in icloud. How can i recover these documents in icloud so I can back it up to my ios devices? Because they were erased fro icloud itself! Thanks

How can I retrieve the lost data that I erase it accidentally from my icloud during manage storage of icloud?

I'm not sure you can unless you have a Mac with a back up.
Whilst it won't help you recover documents that have already become corrupt, can I suggest you get into the habit of backing up your documents in the cloud regularly.

  • How to manage iCloud storage?

My iphone and ipad say that the storage is full and it is not doing the back up or can't perform any upgrades to them because of the storage. How can I manage the storage?

You can manage a device's backup by going into Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > Manage Storage > 'device name' and change what apps are being backed up from it (on your iPad you can only manage your iPad's backup, you will need to do similar on your phone for its backup)

No, I realized that about how many emails it downloads.  Can't say I understand why they chaged it.

  • How to manage buy extra 5gb icloud storage in my iphone

how to manage buy extra 5gb icloud storage in my iphone

Before buying more icloud storage, be sure that, if you are having some problem like trying to back up to icloud, the lack of storage is not on your device.  If your device is short of storage, buying more icloud storage will not help.
Go to Settings>General>Usage to see how much "Storage" you have available on the device.  Farther down the list is the available storage on iCloud.

  • How to manage my storage?

ipad 2..keep telling that i need more gb..i have 15gb..
and is telling me how to manage my storage sign...setting
    total storage 15gb
    available 7.8gb

Regarding storage, is that storage on the device or storage in icloud?
Although this is the icloud forum, if you can't take photos, that's due to not having enough storage on the device (has nothing to do with icloud), so...
You have to delete files on your device.
    Delete apps you don't use.
Delete videos you don't want (these take up a lot of space).
Do you have a lot of emails stored on the device?
Are there apps that store data files, like a PDF reader?  If there are a lot of these, you need to delete some.
The bottom line is that you need to remove data and/or apps on your device to make more storage available.
But for videos and photos, always sync them to a computer first to archive them.

  • How do I manage storage on the iPad?

Hi, I have a 30 gb iPad and have 4gb left. The largest thing on my iPad is 2.6 gb of iBooks data. But the rest adds up to 2.673 gb of data. So that leaves me a total storage area of 9.2 gb (5.2 used + 4 free). How do I figure out what is eating up the rest of my storage? I'm getting my storage numbers from "General > Storage > Manage Storage".
I'm thinking either the iOS takes up must take up 10 gb of data in and of its self. Then the rest of the applications (their physical installed size) are using the rest of that? Or that services being synced from iCloud (mail, contacts and calendars) are eating up memory.
Any assistance is greatly appreciated. I want to just wipe my iPad and see if that frees up data but don't want to lose my Minecraft data (it isn't backed up to anywhere I believe).
FYI, under storage it says I have used 22.4 gb and 4gb is available.
Thank you for anyone that has figured out the magic bullet on managing storage on the iPad and can share!

Found the answer. I backed up my iPad, wiped all the data, and then restored from back-up. Now I have 22.27 gb available to use. It was listed under "other" on   my mac. :-/

  • Don't see photos from icloud.  Replaced broken 4s w/new phone.  Help! How do I get photos back? They don't show up on icloud online but phone says broken phone was backed up yesterday under manage storage.  How do I use this backup?

Please help.  Replaced broken phone w/new 4s.  I did as the genius bar guy said and did reset>erase all content and settings at home because he said it would take too long in the store.  Last time I had to replace my phone, all the photos and video were there.  Now they're not.  I had set up icloud but when i typed in "my restore from icloud", nothing came up.  I NEED those pictures and videos.  They're the last photos and videos I have of my mother who passed away recently.  Please I need them back.  I feel like I've lost her all over again.  Please someone help.  I went to icloud>storage & backup>manage storage and i see that those pictures were backed up yesterday yet I don't see any pictures or picture icon in icloud.com.  Please someone help me get those pictures back.  They're priceless and they're the last I have left of my mother.

If this is your first sync and there is already data on the phone, perform the steps listed below.  This will transfer your apps and other media purchased from the iTunes store to your iTunes library, perform a manual backup and restore, then sync the iTunes media back to the phone from your iTunes library.  This will not transfer media from other sources such as music from your ripped CDs.  As you said you never synced before, I assume all of your apps, music and other media was purchased from the iTuens and App stores.  If this is correct, you won't lose anything.
    Download and install iTunes: http://www.apple.com/itunes/.
Launch iTunes, go to the View menu and click to check Show Sidebar.
Go to iTunes>Preferences>Devices (Edit>Preferences>Devices if using Windows) and check "Prevent...from syncing automatically".
Go to Store>Authorize This Computer and authorize all Apple IDs used to purchase apps and other iTunes media (music, podcasts, movies, tv shows, etc.) on your phone.
On her phone, go to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup and turn iCloud Backup to Off.
Connect her phone to your computer and in iTunes go to File>Devices>Transfer Purchases to transfer your purchased media to your iTunes library.
Right-click on the name of the phone on the left side of iTunes and click "Reset Warnings".
Right-click on the name of the phone again and click "Back Up" to back up the phone.
Right-click again and choose "Restore from Backup...", select the backup you just made to restore from and restore the backup to your phone.  If prompted to back up again, decline.
Go to the Info tab and make sure nothing is checked so you aren't syncing calendars, contacts, etc. with iTunes.
Go to the Summary tab and select This Computer under Automatically Back Up.
Check the other tabs to confirm that your sync settings are the way you want them.
Click Apply at the bottom to sync your phone.

  • Two phones with the same icloud how to use storage only one the one

My daughter has a Iphone 4, I have a Iphone 5. Because she is to young to have a credit card that allows her to shop online, she uses mine to buy apps. The phone stands in my name and we share the same Iclud. She needs more storage on her phone, so I said yes for her to buy more storage on her phone. But it seems that the storage has been benefitted my phone instead. How can I switch the storage over on her phone?

    Hi kristgjo,
If the phones share one iCloud account, then the storage upgrade applies to both devices. For example, I have an iPad and an iPhone that I back up to iCloud. Both use the same account, and both use the same iCloud storage.
If you go to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage, you will see both of your devices, and the amount of iCloud storage that they are using displayed. If you click on either of the devices, you will be able to see the size of the backup and the specific items that are being backed up and how large they are.
    Cheers,
    GB
