How to map LUN via Raid Admin?

i want to map a LUN used by a ESXi 5 server to another 2 ESXi servers but I could not find option for it on Raid Admin 1.5.1

It's been a while, but I seem to recall that LUN masking was removed in version 1.5.1 for unknown reasons.
If you can roll back to (I think) RAID Admin 1.5.0 you have the option to use LUN masking, but 1.5.1 doesn't have it.

How to prepare LUN (in raid 1) for ASm

Normally, if a hard drive has NO RAID on it and only one partition, I would use:
# /etc/init.d/oracleasm createdisk ASM01 /dev/sda1
# /etc/init.d/oracleasm createdisk ASM01 /dev/sdb1
Now, if I place both sda and sdb in a external/hardware based RAID 1, i.e., sda has only one partition (sda1), so is sdb (sdb1).
Both sda and sdb will be presented to ASM as LUNs (if I understand correctly, and the ASM can not "see" the partition of the disks directly).
What command should I use to createdisk for the ASM?
Next, a slight complex scenario: sda has multiple partitions (sdc1 for /boot, sdc2 for /root, sdc3 for swap, and sdc4 for /u01); similarly, sdb also has multiple partitions (sdd1 for /boot, sdd2 for /root, sdd3 for swap, and sdd4 for /u01); Both of the disks are placed in RAID 1. I only want/need to prepare the sdc4 and sdd4 partitions for the ASM to use.
What command should I use to createdisk for the ASM?
After the above work is done, I'll be able to present the following LUNs to the ASM in one diskgroup:
disk array 1: sda1 and sdb1 (both on RAID 1)
disk array 2: sdc4 and sdd4 (both on RAID 1)

I would not use a partition of a disk as raw device for an ASM diskgroup*. Never mind sharing a disk between ASM and cooked file systems.
Disks in an ASM diskgroup should provide the same basic performance. An essential requirement for the diskgroup's performance to be stable.
If the disks in that diskgroup is also used by other s/w (for cooked file systems for example), one disk can be slower than the other at times, as that s/w is hitting its partitions particularly hard.
This results in inconsistencies in performance of the disks in an ASM diskgroup. This will impact database performance. Cause very weird run-time performance anomolies. Will be hard to diagnose.
There's also an ownership issue. For other s/w to own partitions on that disk, together with ASM, requires multiple parties ownership of that same disk. Which means that ASM has access to other partitions it does not own, and those owners have access to ASM partitions.
This is not a safe, secure and robust approach.

Communication with XRAID via XRAID Admin frustration

I have an XRAID that properly mounts and works flawlessly from a storage point of view. However, I can't seem to be able to communicate with the device via RAID Admin. I have hard reset the power (unplug for > 1hour) the RAID.
To start the debug process, I downloaded RAID Admin onto my macbook pro and tried to find the XRAID. It worked perfectly. I can see both ethernet cards. It reports all is well with the device. I am spinning my wheels trying to find out what the difference between the two setups are.
I tried to manually input the ip addresses of the RAID controller (that I received from my laptop. 169.xxx.xx.xx from both cards) on my xserve to establish the connection with no success.
My xserve has a DNS without automatic client Bonjour browsing for domain enabled. My network input to my server comes from a comcast cable modem to an apple extreme then to the server.
Any ideas to further debug are really appreciated.

What is the IP address of the computer your are trying to reach the 169.x machines? I'll assume you're talking about 169.254.x.x address - it must also be in the 169.254.x.x IP address range to talk to a network connection.
Certain IP ranges are set aside as special (169.254.. is self-assigned, 192.168.. is local) and are unroutable from outside that space. If your computer is on a publicly addressable space you will not be able to establish communication with a computer in any of these special non-routable ranges.
You either need to force a computer into the same space or make (at least) one of the network cards have a publicly reachable IP address via DHCP or whatever method you want.

RAID Admin vs Quicktime conflict

Folks: I too have the problem that on a machine where I'd like to install RAID Admin it won't launch. Apparently due to conflict with QT (according to several threads here). So, it's recommended to use a QT 7.0.1 reinstaller. OK, got that... says it can't install because this machine doesn't have appropriate version of QT (turns out it has QT 7.1).
This is getting exasperating -- does anybody know how to just get this &^%$# RAID Admin to actually run on recently updated machine? (I know about digging into the app package file to find the RAID_Admin.jar file and then use jar launcher... what a hassle... surely there has to be a better way).

How to set up email in RAID Admin?

Using RAID Admin 1.5.1, I need to know how to set up the it up for automatic email notification. Okay I got as far as clicking the Email icon adding my .mac address. Now what do I put under SMTP. It's asking for the "server" and the "from email address". Our company uses a Microsoft Exchange server whether or not that means anything. And what is up with the check box for SMTP Server Authentication?

Thanks Donald for answering my question. I found the IP Address of our exchange server and I plugged that into the server field. And I plugged my own company email address into the "From Email Address" field. That didn't do it, so I plugged in my network username and password into the authentication fields. I clicked "Send Test Email" again. Still didn't work. But here is the key in case anyone else has problems. At least in my case, I had to click the "OK" button to verify my settings. Once verified, I went back into the email settings and clicked "Send Test Email" again. Voila! A test email ended into my .mac email account right onto my iPhone within 1 minute. I think this is so cool. I can be away from the office (whether I be skiing or golfing) and be notified instantly if one of the components start to fail on our Xserve RAID system. Awesome!!!!!!!

RAID Admin Parity verification test: How to use?

My basic question: How to get "Parity validation" test to tell you something useful.
XServe RAID, dual 7x250, RAID Admin 1.5.1 and firmware updated 2 weeks ago.
After rebuilding a RAID array, I ran the RAID Admin's Parity verification test (which I assume probably just runs a test built into the firmware?).
My expectation: That this test would
a) change nothing,
b) report details on any problems.

RAID Admin logs problem -- how to avoid 2-day truncation?

Folks:
I have a problem that appears to have started about April 5 when I updated RAID Admin and Xerve RAID firmware to latest versions. Since then, I'm only seeing last two days of entries in the log (ie: what you see in the "Events" tab in RAID Admin). Strangely, entries up to to April 5 are preserved.
Of course I did't notice this until some was already lost. But now I want to fix it. I don't see any setting for "max log length" or similar.
Further more, I could use an explanation of where this log lives -- is it something that RAID Admin retrieves from the RAID box, or is it somehow preserved on the computer running RAID Admin or what?

Simply? There is no simple way.
But if you will accept a way that is not so simple, there is a company that sells a product that allows you to run a Java class as a service under NT. I don't remember its name but it has been named several times in the past in answers to this same question. A search of the forums would probably find it.

Raid Admin on 2nd ethernet controller, is firmware safe?

Hi,
Have an XRAID and am having problems using the Admin util to configure new set of drives. Admin util does not work with gathering the right info and letting me make changes.
BACKGROUND=
Was initially built with 7 drives in the first controller and used for editing. Built fine RAID5, in use for several months. Network monitoring port is not connected and was only used during setup. No changes to ip's were made.
Several months later (that being now). We need to the second controller for a seperate host. Aquired 7 drives, physically inserted them into the XRAID, lights went red then green. All green lights.
Went to configure. Connected ethernet monitor port on the 2ND controller (never before used) to a hub and a machine used to configure / run RAIDAdmin. Finds it via rendezvous / bonjour (whatever they call it) connect to it. Admin says Gathering info and hangs.
Lights show up in RAIDAdmin as orange | red | nothing | red
It gives me some info such as location, and event log. Can view event log back several weeks etc. However it does NOT give me any info on drives, luns, hardware nothing.. shows the drives as not installed. Including the 7 on the left which are currently operational.
tried restarting raid2 controller. Made changes to ip etc which did not save either.
Then tried the other top ethernet port, the used on the first install. Could not be found running via the admin util. Tried tcpdumping the hub and finding what ip but there was nothing. Tried putting a dhcp server on the network nothing.
BACKGROUND-
Am I doing something wrong? The big question I have at this stage is doing the firmware upgrade to 1.5 safe?. Its the last thing I havnt done. Its still the same as out of the box.
How likely is it to succeed updating for one. Two for fixing my problem with not being able to admin the raid. What possible problems could i be faced with, the READ ME FIRST makes no mention of dangers such as the RAID being destroyed etc. or is that not a possibility? I do not want to affect the current RAID on controller 1.

I imagine that its some web server/ snmp thing that runs on the xraid and just binds to both ips to allow access. The first one, say eth0 i used when i first set it up and worked fine and have tried it periodically to check things. This one now doesnt work as far as i cant find the ip it has or connect to it. Lights on back are fine. No traffic on hub though.
2nd one, call it eth1. the one ive first started using now is its first use as far as i recall. It is the one that half works that just keeps trying to gather info and not get anywhere.
I might try running the RAIDAdmin on another monitor system. The more I think about it im just not sure if its the management bit or the monitoring system. The monitoring system is the same as the one used previously.
I do not look forward to having to recover terabytes

XServe, Raid Admin 1.5.1, failed drive not rebuilding

I am using XServe with Raid Admin v1.5.1. One of my drives failed in my RAID 5 array. I replaced it with a new one, but it is not rebuilding automatically. I rebooted and my lower controller is showing as having failed but the drive I am trying to rebuild is on the upper side. When I click on the drive I want to rebuild in the raid admin drive window, it says Warning unknown array, but the other two drives on either side show as Raid ok. Help!

It would help if you'd given some idea of what you've done so far, so that people don't waste time going through the things you've already done.
For example, you don't say whether or not you've connected the XServe RAID to a host system via the fiber channel cables. That's the first thing.
Have you yet configured the XServe RAID (using RAID Admin) with the array settings you want (e.g. RAID 5, RAID 1, one slice, 5 slices, etc., etc., etc.).
Out of the box, the XServe RAID will be configured for one RAID 5 array per side, so you might be OK there, but you might not.
Then does Disk Utility show the arrays at all?
If not, does System Profiler show the arrays connected?
If they are connected Disk Utility would usually show them, which might indicate the fiber channel cables are not connected.
If Disk Utility does show them, you might need to initialize the arrays. Once they're initialized they should appear on the desktop.

Xserve RAID Admin Tool 1.5.1 not quite working

I have an Xserve RAID that's currently at firmware 1.3.2/1.26a according to Xserve RAID Admin Tool 1.5.1. However, when I try to upgrade the firmware to 1.5.1 via the RAID Admin Tool 1.5.1, it just doesn't do anything--it accepts the .xfb file and then...nothing. Quitting out of the the Admin Tool and restarting still shows the firmware at 1.3.2/1.26a. Same thing if I shut down and restart the Xserve RAID from the RAID Admin tool. Any tips? There's nothing stored on the RAID system yet (the array hasn't even been created--it's a blank system) and nothing is attached to it either (I've just plugged in the ethernet links to format it first before I start attaching an Xserve G5 to it). Also, even though the lower controller is showing green and I have an ethernet cable plugged into it, I can't get any info out of it nor can I configure it with an IP address. Only the top controller seems to allow some configuration such as IP address.

Okay, I've solved the problem.
Basically, the issue was that the lower controller wasn't seated right despite it showing a green light in RAID Admin. When I went to visually inspect it, I noticed that despite what RAID Admin 1.5.1 claimed, its light wasn't even on, let alone green. And since the lower controller handles slots 8-14 of an Xserve RAID and my slots 8-14 are totally unpopulated (empty) at the moment, it was never noticed. Now that I've reseated the lower controller, everything is visually showing green across the board and the firmware upgrade is proceeding as expected and it has upgraded the firmware from 1.3.2/1.26a to 1.5.1/1.5.1c complete with autorestart of both upper and lower controller modules.
Basic lesson learned: RAID Admin lies. If possible, visually inspect the box itself!

non-admin accounts. For e.g. to Retrieve my JMSConnectionfactory i do a

This happens when my managed resource tries to access a JMS ConnectionFactory.
Instead if i register my mbeans using the admin account, everything is fine and
my managed resource works nice.
This is on weblogic 81 SP1 on Solaris. Please let me know if you need more details.
Any clues/hints/solutions greatly appreciated. There is not a lot of documentation

I have done some more debugging on this and have narrowed down the issue to the
location where my initialcontext is being obtained.
so if i register my mbean as a non-admin account and do an operation on the managed
resource which fetches initial context, i get the below exception. This is how
i get my initialcontext

You can use Java/ABAP proxies to do this job for you..
Java Proxy >> will read the mail(with the attachments) with the help of Java APIs and send the message into XI ABAP Proxy >> for this you will have to first convert the attachment into a message and then you can proceed in the regular fashion.
Not all adapters can process attachments, I'm not sure why you are having trouble with using module processor in the mail adapter. Just check if the service pack that you are using supports this feature.

How to connect multiple Xserve Raid for Best Performance

I like to get an idea how to connect multiple Xserve Raid to get the best performance for FCP to do multiple stream HD.

Again, for storage (and retrieval), FireWire 400 should be fast enough. If you are encoding video directly to the external drive, then FireWire 800 would probably be beneficial. Edit: If those two external drives came formatted for Windows, make sure you have use Disk Utility Partition tab to repartition and reformat the drive. When you select the drive in the Disk Utility sidebar, at the bottom of the screen +Partition Map Scheme+ should say *GUID Partition Table*. When you select the volume under the drive in the sidebar, Format should say *Mac OS Extended (Journaled)*.
