How to mark books as read in iBooks

Is there a way to mark books as already being read on the iBookshelf?

I was wondering the same thing. But after thinking about it I shouldn't have to do anything at all. The app should be able to tell me Read/Unread/up to p. # & date (last read/downloaded or added to device/last read) without putting the onus on me. A simple toggle in Settings (again, why does Apple make me leave the app to change the settings....other non-Apple apps don't treat the user like that) to allow the user to display this metadata or not.
I've always heard that Apple products are user friendly, but I keep finding that simple information and tasks are unavailable and the work-arounds lead to even more work on my part.

Marking books as read

Is there a way to mark a book as having been read? It would be nice to be able to add a "ribbon" that says "Read" similar to the ribbon that says "sample" and "new". Right now I have resorted to adding a note on the copyright page when I have finished a book.

If you don't mind the ugly list view you can do this.
In iTunes on your computer you can change the Category of the book. You can change it from Fiction to Read Fiction. Or something. Then, sync up, in iBooks you can sort using the list view, sort by category, and your Read books will be grouped.
No easy way. Like my idea or your idea, we have to get creative to flag something as read.

How to get books onto iPad when iBooks for Mac refuses to sync.

I have around 300 books which were originally in the books section of iTunes. Since upgrading to Mavericks the new iBooks for Mac is moved them all over and I ma now unable to access most of them on my iPad despite making sure all settings are correct. None of the books I use for study created by iBooks Author will now transfer. The only ones that seem to are those recently purchased from iTunes. Anybody out there found a solution yet. Apparently Apple admit that only books purchased from iTunes will sync, but I need to be able to get them on my iPad. I don't care if they sync or not.

There are a few categorical places one must visit in order to synchronize iBooks for Mac with IOS iBooks. There is no need to remove the iBook for Mac application.
System Preferences > iCloud > Documents and Data is enabled
IOS Settings > iBooks > Sync Collections (enabled) and optionally Sync Bookmarks (enabled)Assumption that iCloud is enabled on the IOS device with documents and data enabled
iBook for Mac > Preferences > General: Sync: Sync bookmarks, highlights, and collections across devices
iTunes
Pick your IOS Device under DEVICES in the left nav
Choose Books along the top toolbar
In the Books panel, choose one of the following

Books only
PDF only
In the Sync Books panel
All Books
Selected BooksClick the box next to the books you wish to Sync
Select iTunes Sync
The books (and PDF) you selected above are now on your IOS device

You must set them both up to use IMAP.
The problem may be that your chosen/preferred email provider doesn't offer IMAP.

trying to edit the metadata for books and pdfs in the iBooks for mac app and it doesnt seem possible.. the "get info" window is non existant to make changes..

I know whenever you sync a new item to iBooks is mark with a "new" ribbon, which disappears once you turn the first page. Sometimes i've had open a book just to overlook a few pages, but i want to restore the "new" ribbon so i can identify unread books. When you have a large library in iBooks is complicated to remember which books are new/unread and which are already read. Does anyone knows how to mark books as new/unread?

You can't. You could consider creating a collection specifically for newly downloaded books.

After researching this further, I have concluded that the update feature is working correctly. What I was expecting was that once the iPod would sync with my Mac, that the updating, including marking the podcast as read would take place at that point. In reality, this function does not take place until I click on "Update" in iTunes. During that process the various blue dots of those Podcasts listened to go away, and Podcasts that are outside the parameters of those I want to retain are deleted.
So, if indeed, as long as I have completed the entire Podcast, the update functions are working properly.

When you eneter information into iTunes Producer for uploading, the info must match what is in the internal metadata. In this case, the book is called Mississippi, but in iTunes Producer it is spelled Misssissippi. There is an extra "s". This will cause an error.

You can't unless the book is one of the public domain books from Project Gutenberg and hence has no copy protection. Commercial iBooks can be read only on iOS devices.

You can't simply move it directly between iPads.
In your example, you'd find that .ibook file in your iTunes account on your computer and then email or sync it to the school's iPad. Similar to how you did with yours....maybe you got it off a server and can repeat that process.
Then delete it off your iPad and either delete or flag your copy in iTunes to not be put back when you sync in the future.
